pring Fair 2018, which ta kes place from 4th-8th Februar y, w ill showcase a selection of children’s gifts, toys, and gadgets in Ha ll 5 of the Nationa l Ex hibition Centre in Birmingham. A varied offering of items, including plush, games, gadgets, wooden toys, novelties, tech toys, arts and crafts and more w ill be unveiled throughout the show. Feedback shows that a lot of retailers appreciate the fact that the toy sector is located directly next to the gift sector, offering them an easy opportunit y to source product ranges across both categories. Spring Fair 2017 boasted over 58,000 v isitors, covering the entire retail spectrum – including online retailers, multiples and independent stores.

The opportunit y to source different products tempts many toy retailers to v isit Spring Fair. Spring loaded Spring Fair 2018 puts the Children’s Gifts & Toys sector in the spotlight, with The Party Show also returning to Hall 5. The show’s 14 sectors will help retailers diversify their product offerings, with plenty of new exhibitors showing for the first time in 2018.
s ever, thousands of new products will be on display at Spring Fair, alongside a wealth of information about future trends, plus an engaging programme of seminars and workshops. The event will present trend-setting brands from around the globe, many of which are exclusive to the Spring Fair. Across 14 show sectors, buyers can expect to find everything from contemporary gifts and children’s toys, to games, puzzles, licensing opportunities, children’s books and nursery items, plus everything else in between. One of Spring Fair’s most popular sectors, Children’s Gifts & Toys, will deliver an opportunity for visitors to experience the world’s latest children’s products, with 150-plus exhibitors showcasing everything from puzzles, plush toys and books, to games, licensed products and nursery items. Adding an extra dimension to the hall in 2018, the Party sector will move into Hall 5, providing buyers with a smoother shopping experience, and perfect platform to cross-buy and source next season’s best-selling merchandise. Independents, department stores, and online retailers will find an eclectic mix of big ticket items and smaller value products, from some of the world’s most famous children’s gift manufacturers and distributors. Alison Graham, event director at Spring Fair, commented: “Our dedicated Children’s Gifts & Toys sector is designed to help retailers identify the best products and diversify their offerings. It will be a hotbed of innovation, with hundreds of products that will meet growing consumer demand for creative and engaging products that help children learn whilst having fun.”
In addition to the plethora of new products, The Inside Retail workshop and seminar programme will help bricks and mortar retailers boost sales and improve their bottom line. Over five days, dozens of speakers will deliver practical advice on a diverse range of pertinent topics, including licensing, managing brand and IP, and how to drive profitability as an independent business. There will also be sessions that deliver information around creating effective digital campaigns. Available on the Spring Fair website and new for the 2018 show, the Appointment Planner has a matchmaking functionality, which recommends exhibitors based on filters such as product category and sector. The Appointment Planner enables both exhibitors and visitors to request and accept meetings directly ahead of the show, to help everyone make the most of their time at the event. In 2018, the event organiser has announced the introduction of a Spring Fair Voucher initiative that can be redeemed by retailers on the hunt for new suppliers. Buyers will be able to get £100 off an order of £500 or more when they open an account with a new supplier at the show. The voucher can be used with up to 10 participating exhibitors and is only valid at Spring Fair 2018, thus offering a potential saving of £1,000. For more information visit www.springfair. com. Full of the joys of spring Toy World spoke to a selection of exhibitors showing at Spring Fair 2018, about the importance of the show to them, what the key focus on their stands will be and what they hope to have acheived by the end of the event.

The past 12 months has been by far and away the busiest year ever for us, not just in terms of day to day operations but in managing the expansion of the business. In 2017 we welcomed six new team members bolstering all areas of the business, which ensures that we head into 2018 with the best possible resources in place to handle our ambitious growth plans. Within the licensed division we have been working very hard to secure new product categories on both contract renewals and new licence agreements. The hard work we’ve put into securing new product areas will see Blue Sky coming to the market in 2018 with Bags, Lunchwear, Stationery, Lighting, and Novelty gifting across various licences. On the kids licensed side of our stand we will be presenting our usual high quality innovative ranges of stationery, activity and novelty gift products, across multiple licences such as Hanazuki, My Little Pony and Star Wars, amongst others. We have exciting new properties to shout about at Spring Fair in Harry Potter, Hamsta, and Transformers. Visitors will see a new linear stand layout from us this time, hopefully making the products easier to view and interact with. Personally I’m very much looking forward to presenting a fantastic range of Harry Potter product, in particular a new range of bags and some clever novelty gift products. The timing is good, as we catch buyers at a key decision-making time of the year for our categories. Come February we are itching to show off all of our hard work that has taken place the previous winter. It’s always nice to meet up with and spend time with our licensor partners, with our product as the backdrop. By the time the fair draws to a close, we hope to have spent quality time with our existing customers and to have met many new customers during the course of the show. We also hope to have successfully promoted our new and exiting licensed ranges, and to have delivered the message that you can now buy a more expansive range of products per licence from Blue Sky than ever before, making us much more of a one stop shop solution. Obviously an order book bursting at the seams is always a nice outcome, but to be honest its much more valuable to us to have that precious face to face time with our customers, in an environment where we can display and promote our extensive product offering.

Sinco Creations The past 12 months have been incredibly positive for Sinco Creations. In November last year we announced the very exciting news that Sinco has been named as the official master toy licensee of Shaun the Sheep and Timmy Time. We will soft launch the range in autumn/winter, and then hit hard in 2019 with some innovative and creative products - all in time for the worldwide theatrical release of Shaun the Sheep Movie 2 in April that year. In addition to this we have partnered with Disney. We launched the first of our stunning ranges last year, which consist of 18” and 25” Christmas Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Winnie the Pooh high quality plush, all of which have their very own festive hats. The sales have been incredibly strong, and have paved the way to showcase this year’s range. At Spring Fair we will be presenting our new Disney sentimental plush range, which will consist of 12”, 18” and 25” Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in unique outfits. In addition, look out for our special edition Mickey Mouse to celebrate the 90th Anniversary. We will also be showcasing the first of our Shaun the Sheep and Timmy Time products. The re-birth of Shaun and Timmy toys and plush will see Sinco offer originality and creative product ranges, all at very competitive price points. This will be the first time that Sinco Creations will be showing at Spring Fair. We feel it is vital for us to have a presence here, and to ensure we have the opportunity to showcase our ranges to a vast range of retailers. We are also looking forward to catching up with potential buyers who perhaps were unable to attend Toy Fair or Nuremberg. We hope that many buyers, both new and existing alike, will have the chance to drop by and meet us.

Harrison Palmer Pretend to Bee
It’s been a brilliant year for Pretend to Bee. Our brand awareness continues to grow, and consumers are seeking us out as the go-to for dress up occasions throughout the year. We also closed the year on a high, as one of our brand-new products, the Unicorn Zip Up Hooded Top, was featured on ITV’s This Morning as part of its Christmas Gift Guides. This prompted a fantastic spike in sales during the all-important Q4. We will continue to support all of our new launches with marketing and PR throughout 2018. We have several new key lines that will be launched at Spring Fair, including additions to our hugely popular Natural History Museum collection. Our NHM Dinosaur costumes will now be available for babies, starting at six months and up. We will also be launching new Pretend to Bee headbands and tails, which make fantastic extensions to existing retailer selections, and are opening up other retail channels for us too. The NEC is a great venue for us - not only is it relatively close to our head office, but its central location enables us to meet customers from across the UK, as it’s always so well attended. We enjoy a prime position on the show floor and have great footfall throughout the course of the fair. As well as meeting a lot of our existing customers, we always come away from the show with new contacts and orders. By the end of the show we hope to have achieved great sales. We we also want to ensure that visitors leaving the event have been assured not only of the breadth of our ranges, but also of the quality and innovation on offer. Seeing is believing and so it’s great that customers can come on to the stand and see our dress-up lines up close and personal.
The Puppet Company The devaluation of the pound hit us very hard in 2017, but we have had strong sales on our most popular lines which helped us greatly. We have employed a new team of sales agents who have also contributed to increasing our sales. The development of the new Wilberry Soft Toys brand has really worked for us, allowing us to sell into more gift shops and department stores. At Spring Fair, we will be showcasing a completely new glove puppet collection called Puppet Buddies which will retail at £7.50, giving the retailer at least a 2.4 margin. There are over 30 to collect, representing all the favourite farm, pet and wild animals. The Puppet Company always looks forward to the NEC Spring Fair, as it is the first major show of the year, which attracts buyers from many different sectors. Our extensive range of high quality puppets sells strongly in many different retail situations including gift shops, tourist attractions, zoos, garden centres and toy shops, so Spring Fair is perfect for us to meet the gift buyers for all these sectors. Other large trade shows tend to concentrate on just one specific retail sector, but Spring Fair has a much wider reach. We showcase new and innovative designs for the year ahead at Spring Fair, alongside samples of proposed new ranges to gauge feedback from our buyers. This gives us a means to measure what the demand and reactions will be. It also gives us the perfect opportunity to present our new Wilberry Soft Toys range, which includes over 80 new styles that have been added for 2018. New materials, designs and colours are expanding and enhancing what is proving to be a highly successful product range, backed by The Puppet Company’s reputation for great service, quality and prices.

The last twelve months have been great. A fantastic entertainment slate with the likes of Wonder Woman and Game of Thrones have made this a brilliant year for our ranges. We also had David Wootliff join us in the role of commercial director and he has hit the ground running, beginning the process of taking Pyramid to new levels of success. Spring Fair will see us release a range of new products to our already impressive library. This includes Flexi-Cover notebooks, an innovative new take on our popular range of stationery and a new range of gift sets. These products will be on show for the first time in the UK at the Spring Fair. Visitors can also look forward to a plethora of new designs across our library of products and licences, which offer something for everyone. Ours is a very visual industry, so it is important to get our products in the lime light and Spring Fair provides us with the perfect opportunity to do so. It is a huge, well known show, and with that you get buyers across all areas of the retail industry coming to visit, so the opportunities that present themselves are huge. Alongside this it gives us an opportunity to meet with our current customers and licensors at a convenient time. We are hoping to have had a great product launch for our new lines, built some bridges with potential new partners, nurtured old relationships and made a few smiles happen.

Spring Fair 2018 Following the growing consumer trend for all-things whimsical, Baby Gund presents the new Luna the Unicorn range. Aimed specifically at millennial mums and dads, the range has also been designed with baby’s rest and relaxation in mind. The Luna Pullstring Musical is a soft plush décor item. The item depicts Luna the Unicorn resting her head on a soft cloud, embroidered with the word “dream” in gold thread. Luna herself is presented in a white fabric, and features blush pink mane and hooves with a slight purple undertone, along with a rose gold horn. Beneath Luna’s cloud is a hanging golden star in a metallic material. When pulled down, the Luna Pullstring Musical plays Brahms’ Lullaby – a gentle and soothing tune to help baby drift off into a restful night’s sleep. Surface washable and suitable for newborns, the Luna Pullstring Musical is 23cm tall and makes an ideal gift for expecting parents. Baby Gund is also introducing its Dinosaur Collection. With softer fabrics and boa materials, items in the Dinosaur Collection are complemented by details including faux suede applique and embroidery. Presented in bright colours, items within the Dinosaur Collection are easily accessible and have an attractive price point. The Chomper Animated Dino is a 33cm tall animated plush. The plush is presented standing on his hind legs with his arms out in front of his torso. With a dark green body, and a dark blue underbelly which complements the scales cascading down its back, the Chomper Animated Dino also features black beads for the eyes, white teeth and red nostrils. The Chomper Animated Dino is further brought to life through the use of animatronics. Kids can simply pat the dinosaur’s back to hear it roar, and watch his upper body and mouth move. Pretend to Bee returns to the NEC in 2018 with new lines. The Natural History Museum Dinosaur range has been hugely successful for the company, and this year the collection will be extended to include smaller sizes for babies from six months old and onwards. Made from the same high-quality material and attention to detail as larger versions, the T-Rex and Triceratops onesie style costumes are not only great for dress up occasions, but they also keep baby cosy and warm. New for 2018 is the headband collection, which allows children to accessorise an outfit and be whoever they want to be. Made from soft fabrics and comfortable bands, they feature various characters including Squirrel, Badger, Fox and Frog. There are also lots of other fun and unique designs coming up in late 2018 with sea creatures and pets all making an appearance. The Premium Fairy collection continues to prove popular with parents due to the unique detailing and additional accessories, all available at competitive price points. Each intricate costume comes with wings, a wand, and a headband. Pretend to Bee also has several licensed ranges including the popular Thunderbirds are Go! range, which due to new programming and the recent 50th anniversary celebrations, shows no sign of waning. Kids can simply set up the Smart Tech arches around their track, and press Go on the engine. As the train travels along the track it will automatically detect each arch, and do exactly what is indicated by the icon. Depending on the icon, the train could stop, start, slow down, switch on the lights or make a sound. With the Smart Tech Workshop, kids can see their Brio world come to life. When passing a Broken Engine Action Tunnel, the Smart Tech Engine will start to sound and act as if it is broken, and will roll to the workshop, stopping above the repairman’s pit. Now it is up to the child to ‘fix’ the train, and get it back on track. These new puppets are made of a different material to the one used in the company’s classic ranges, such as Long Sleeves and CarPets, which enables them to offer the range at a very competitive cost price. These puppets are not designed to replace The Puppet Company’s current ranges, but to instead offer retailers a quality range of glove puppets with a retail margin of x2.4 and a low base RRP. Alien Eggs took the coveted Toy Craze of the Year in 1999, and the popularity of this range has never waned, having gone on to sell over 30m units worldwide. Last year saw the introduction of the award-winning Grow Alien Egg and this year there will be additions to the range, with products added in all sizes. Ten new eggs with a new in-house design will add to the success of the Alien Eggs brand. New items include the duck egg sized Alien Light Up Eggs, filled with glowing slime. Dinosaurs and fossils have always been a winner with kids, and this year Grossman introduces the Fossil Egg. For the first time ever, customers will be able to buy backpacks, gym bags, messenger bags, lunch bags, drinks bottles, stationery, novelty gifts and lighting products. The company has worked hard throughout 2017 in order to bring both new properties on board and to develop a significantly increased product offering. Blue Sky will be launching three major new properties at Spring Fair - Hanazuki: Full of Treasures, Hamsta World, and Harry Potter. The company previewed a handful of products for Hasbro’s new licence Hanazuki at Autumn Fair in September and received a very positive response to its offering. Since then, Blue Sky has secured several new listings for spring/summer 2018, and retailers are advised to look out for the full product launch at Spring Fair. Hamsta World has had excellent feedback so far from fans, and whilst the company is unable to reveal any details at the time of going to print, consumers should expect to see the quirky brand in some of the UK’s leading fashion retailers later this year. With a product offering in excess of 45 lines, Blue Sky is a true destination for Hamsta product. Harry Potter is back, and Blue Sky has relished the opportunity to add its innovative approach to the brand. There will be a range of bags on offer, featuring backpacks, messenger bags and lunch bags, all with a classic Hogwarts look. Blue Sky will also have creative stationery products on show, which form part of its school/social stationery collection. The range is completed with around a dozen novelty gift products, including the Harry Potter edition of the best-selling Who Am I glasses game, a pop-up Engorgio goblet, a self-stirring mug and a stylish cinema light box. Aside from the new licences added to its portfolio, Blue Sky has also introduced a fresh new look to its best-selling My Little Pony range of stationery, arts & craft, and kids gifting. Following on from the movie design the company ran for part of 2017, the new design is brighter, more colourful and more delicate. Initial reactions to the designs have been extremely positive and early indications point towards My Little Pony being a dominant force in the girls’ licensed sector again this year. Spring Fair will also see the launch of the new stylised Star Wars Pictogram range, which is aimed at an older consumer. The monotone repeat pattern design features the most iconic Star Wars characters, minaturised and drawn in a simple vector format. The paper products all have a canvas texture covering, giving them a premium feel. The Star Wars product range then ventures into the novelty gift and gadget category with a host of USB powered devices, including the best-selling Blue Tooth Storm Trooper Speaker. Blue Sky Designs is hoping that its hard work in 2017 will put the company in a strong position for 2018, as it moves into new product areas; this year should see a much broader array of products made available to existing customers and fans of the company’s ranges, and should also attract new customers. This will be followed in 2019 with a full rollout, which will see the full range of products hit shelves in time for the worldwide theatrical release of Shaun the Sheep Movie 2 in April that same year. As well as Super 3D Dinosaurs there will be further National Geographic Kids Dinosaur 150-piece puzzles on the way, in addition to the four versions already on the market. Space and solar system products are always popular too, and to further appeal to this part of the market Kidicraft will expand with products featuring planets, stars and moons and satellites. National Geographic and National Geographic Kids products have formed a large part of the Kidicraft Super 3D spectrum, so as well as more magic motion puzzles for 2018 there will also be children’s table mats, wall posters, postcards, notebooks and bookmarks added to the range, all of which feature animals from the cute and cuddly to the wild and fierce. Sambro returns to London Toy Fair with significant launches that will further cement its position as one of the major players in the toy and licensing industry. The licensed product specialist, which recently opened its Southern office, has a long-standing partnership with Nickelodeon, winning Licensee of the Year twice. Strengthening this relationship further, 2018 will see Sambro launch its extensive new Nickelodeon Slime range. The deal grants Sambro master toy rights globally, excluding North America, and will see the licensee introduce an array of Nickelodeon Slime products from spring/summer 2018. Nickelodeon has been synonymous with slime since the network’s launch in the UK back in 1982, with Slime the symbol of free-spirited mess and the physical embodiment of Nickelodeon’s unconventional spirit. Sambro’s range will embrace this spirit, allowing kids to get creative with Nickelodeon Slime in their own homes. The hero product from Sambro’s range is the Nickelodeon Slime Hyper Blaster. The pump action blaster projects the infamous green liquid up to seven metres. An entertaining memory game, players have 60 seconds to memorise the board before the pieces are covered up. As the game progresses the covered pieces swap and change positions around the board. Designed so that both adults and children have an equal chance of winning, Baffled helps develop memory and concentration skills. Polar Panic is the newest title in Cheatwell’s round tin games series. Last year, Silly Safari, Lift Off and Caveman exceeded all expectations, and so the company set about developing a new game to join the collection. Polar Panic is a fast paced fishing game in which everyone plays at the same time to try and spot matching fish. If a player turns over an Eskimo, all the cards go back face down; if they turn over a polar bear, however, it might be game over. This clever twist on the traditional gaming format allows players to decide how to finish the game – play either stops when the polar bear is found, or players can pick him up and take a forfeit. For fans of the squeeze popper range there are four new characters – a pink Unicorn, a Sloth, an Owl and now a Poo popper. There will be a host of new pre-school and children’s lines unveiled by games and puzzles specialist Paul Lamond at Spring Fair this year. Roald Dahl is the latest new addition to Paul Lamond’s licensed portfolio, with four 250-piece puzzles launching in February in time for World Book Day. The four puzzles, featuring Quentin Blake’s illustrations, will focus on some of the author’s most beloved characters and stories; Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The BFG. Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s villainous storybook character, The Highway Rat, has been in the limelight over the Christmas period, and a specially adapted version of the storybook, starring David Tennant as the voice of the Highway Rat, premiered as the BBC’s main animation on Christmas Day. Hot on the heels of the successful release of The Highway Rat Giant Floor puzzle and 4-in-1 Puzzle Set last autumn, Paul Lamond is to launch a board game starring the main characters from the children’s tale.
