CONCEPT

PURPOSE/ NEEDS ASSESSMENT

Conceptually, the design of the healthcare facility is inspired by the beehive and the colony of bees that call it home. The building will embody the following characteristics of the beehive:

The project is a behavioral healthcare facility dedicated to helping female veterans recover from sexual trauma experienced during their time in the military

• Safety for it dwellers / occupants (Safe space to hel) • Sense of community and comradery (Support system both from peers and staff) • Social creature (Active member of the community producing honey, partaking in pollination, etc. Healing spaces that encourage participation) • Treatment of the queen bee as the most important member of the colony (Encourage female empowerment through design of healthcare facility)

For that reason, the project necessitates a design that provides clinical and residential recovery spaces for these women. emphasis is also placed heavily on trusthworthy service and empathetic support.

PROPOSAL

=

5.

The proposal is a stand-alone sexual trauma unit that will house a 7 week program that provides recovery services to related issues such as depression, ptsd, associated sleep disorder and physical healthcare needs to recovering female veterans of sexual trauma.

6.

While composing the program, I kept in mind “The 10 attributes of a Healing Environment” as presented by Mary Therese from the VA in New Jersey. So I started off by listing a generous number of spaces for the facility, after which I then organize them into four main categories. The rationale behind it is start exploring spaces and their level of connection, all within the guidelines dictated by the 10 attributes. The • • • • • • • • • •

In line with the theme of the Studio, which is Human-Centered Design, i thought it best not only to design the building and spaces within but to further my efforts by putting together a Patient Schedule (refer to diagram on the right). The Patient Schedule is designed for 4 groups consisting of 5 women and essentially entails a series of planned out activities they are encouraged to partake in, for the sole purpose of facilitating their recovery.

CONCEPT

Conceptually, i drew inspiration from the Savannah River which is in close proximity to the site. I started out by sketching my own interpretation of the river. After which i then extracted 2 undulating strands that later become the 2 grand arches which criss-cross one another and essentially support the sloping walls that enclose the gallery space and all other programs within (Please refer to the above illustration). As a result, the architectural intervention is an Art Gallery for international artists i coined S.I.D.A. (Savannah Industrial Design Art) Gallery. SIDA aims to establish a place for working and temporary occupation for a small group of Industrial Designers and other artists visiting Savannah. SIDA Gallery also seeks to provide a space that not only serves as a hub for the display of the most innovative of

19.

inventions, but also a building structure that personifies that very essence. The final building design is also characterized by a Louvered Roofing system which consists of angled louvers and a glazed roof that ushers in filtered sunlight and also helps keep the building sustainable (Pls see rendered diagram SECTION A). The site is on Factors Walk located in downtown Savannah, Georgia. The property is bordered by River Street to its north and Williamson Street to its south. The site is in close proximity to Savannah River, Broughton Street, Best Western, US Post Office, City Market, Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, Jepson Center for the Arts, etc.

After exploring what shape the building’s form would take, i began exploring its program by making a rough draft following guidelines provided in the project brief. The project comprises of 3 distinct parts: Private, Public and Administrative.

Bike Rack The diagram rendered in SECTION A depicts Passive Heating, specifically during Winter months, and also general Wind Studies around the site. Because the Roofing system comprises of Louvered frames and a Glazed roof underneath, that allows for the transferral of heat collected during the warmest parts of the day in the winter months. Concurrently, heat withing the building collected during the hot Summer months is released when it rises towards the ceiling at night. Also, because the Louvered frames are angled, that allows for natural lighting to filter into the Gallery. SECTION C
