Strand Ephemera is to the region and Australia as a whole?
A I was inspired to use the ID disks in this artwork as they emulate the glistening of the water with their movement, whilst reflecting on the reverse the vigilance of our life savers with their iconic colours.
Strand Ephemera is a ten day arts festival held along Townsville’s picturesque beachfront promenade, The Strand. Presented biennially, this outdoor sculpture exhibition is loved not only locally, but is also of state and national significance. Take part in a dynamic program of Strand Ephemera events such as artist talks, guided tours, free art workshops, a photographic competition, public art symposium, and much more. We spoke to 2015 Strand Ephemera winner Alison McDonald about the importance of Strand Ephemera.
Q How important is Strand Ephemera as a platform for artists to exhibit their work and increase their profiles?
A For sculptors, Strand Ephemera is a very important platform, as it has such a huge audience and thus allows you to learn how to work on a large scale whilst interacting with the public. Participating in Strand Ephemera has allowed me to qualify and exhibit at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi Beach.

A Strand Ephemera shows the rest of Australia how talented Townsville artists are whilst also bringing other great artists to the Strand. During the 2015 event I met so many visiting tourists from all around Australia and overseas that constantly praised our stunning Strand, the artworks and the gallery for hosting such a family friendly and inclusive event. Rugby League World Cup coming to Townsville in 2017
2nd December, in what is international Rugby League’s pinnacle event.
The eyes of the sporting world will be on Townsville when the City hosts three exciting Rugby League World Cup matches in October and November 2017.
On Sunday 5th November, the USA return to take on Italy, before Fiji tackles Wales in a Round Two double-header, where fans get to see two World Cup matches for the price of one!
The 2017 Rugby League World Cup, to be played in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, will see 14 teams play 28 games over five weeks from Friday 27th October until Saturday

How to conquer Magnetic Island in 48 hours Pack the sunscreen, your best summer hat and a sense of adventure as you board the ferry to Magnetic Island. The short 20 minute ferry ride will have see you arriving in pure bliss in next to no time. Getting around the Island is simple with buses, taxis, tours, walking trails and hire cars available. But, if you really want to explore ‘the island way’ we recommend going topless – hiring a topless car, that is.
Day 1 Morning – Cameras at the ready for some epic views Prepare a keen eye and lace up the hiking boots before you head to Magnetic Island’s spectacular Forts Walk. This trail offers the best vantage point for impressive coastal views and is home to a series of historic WWII fortifications. With more koalas living on Magnetic Island than people, this is also the perfect location to spot koalas in the wild. Lunch – Beachside Dining Unwind and cool off from your hiking ventures with a beach side meal at one of Horseshoe Bay’s bars, cafes or restaurants. Afternoon – Meet the ultimate cuties If you thought the koalas were cute, wait until you meet the rock wallabies that call Geoffrey Bay home – they are downright adorable. Grab some wallaby food from the nearby newsagency and they will feed right from your hands. These little guys aren’t camera shy either so try your luck at getting a #selfie.

Day 2 Breakfast with the koalas Fancy an Aussie buffet breakfast complete with koalas for company? Travel tips and advice from WNBL superstar Suzy Batkovic Q You’ve played basketball across the globe and have chosen to live in Townsville. What makes Townsville North Queensland such a special place to live?
A I lived in Townsville for a short time when I was 20 and I had fond memories of the place and the people. When the opportunity to play in Townsville presented itself I leapt at it. Townsville has grown and is a great place full of great people. I love
the lifestyle and even the winters are warm! Living in the tropics is perfect.
Q You’ve just found out your family and close friends are coming to Townsville to visit for a couple of days. What are the ‘Must Do’s’ in your opinion?
A I would take them to Magnetic Island, it is such a beautiful place and just a short ferry ride from Townsville. Then we’d go to the Castle Hill lookouts to check out the views. We’d walk along The Strand and enjoy the cafés, restaurants and bars. We’d then head just outside of Townsville to Little Crystal Creek and Big Crystal Creek. Here we’d have a picnic/BBQ and enjoy some of the fresh water swimming holes and waterfalls. I love kicking back and relaxing here with friends and family – there’s something
for everyone. Lastly, if I’ve got little ones visiting I’d take them to Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium. My three nephews Jack (5), Lucas (3) and Josh (1) absolutely love it!
Q Tell us what you believe is the region’s best kept secret?
A Best kept secret in my opinion is Magnetic island. There is lots to see and do but it’s also a great place to just relax.

A Most of our training is done indoors but we also take advantage of getting up Castle Hill and utilising its infamous goat track. This year for preseason we utilised the army’s outdoor obstacle course at Lavarack Barracks which was challenging to say the least. It’s nice to have so many options to choose from around Townsville.
It’s fast paced, an incredible atmosphere and a model display of girl power on game nights at the Townsville Stadium. The backto-back WNBL champions, JCU Townsville Fire, create an evening of fun-filled and exciting family entertainment!

Riding off road! Whether you’re a downhill demon or a marathon mountain biker, the off road trails in Townsville North Queensland are bound to impress!
After working up a sweat at the Douglas Reserve, jump back on the bike and head across the river for a swim and a coffee while relaxing at the Riverway Lagoons.
For first timers through to the more advanced, there is a trail for everyone. Home to some of the most picturesque and bragworthy trails in North Queensland, a mountain bike ride when visiting Townsville is hard to resist. Here are a few favourites you might want to add to your travel itinerary:
Douglas Mountain Bike Reserve Boasting approximately 30km of cross country trails, the Douglas Mountain Bike Reserve offers 18 individual trails ranging from smooth surfaces ideal for beginners through to rocky, steep and technical climbs and descents. Choose from a range of trails including the Hammerhead, Boulderdash, Wedgetail and Spiderbait, or if you are really up for a challenge, give the suitably named “Rock and Roll” a go – a fast downhillonly trail that’s complete with rock gardens, steep drops and sharp corners. With the recent additions of a pump track, jumps and a flow trail, Douglas MTB Reserve really has it all.
Mt Stuart This short (3km), but mighty, downhill track offers plenty of obstacles in steep, rocky and twisty terrain. Riders have been known to get up to 60km/ hr during this adrenaline-packed course. Before you rush down make sure to take in the views from the top of Mt Stuart, overlooking the whole of Townsville.

Townsville’s newest mountain biking destination offers some of the best views of the Coral Sea. The Under the Radar (UTR) trail – a 17km single track loop – will take you through woodlands, past mangroves and alongside WWII fortifications. This trail requires a good base level of fitness but isn’t too technically challenging and you will be rewarded with stunning scenery and spectacular ocean views. For a more difficult, intermediate grade trail try the Smedley’s track, a 7km loop off UTR that continues to offer unbeatable views with a great flowing downhill run. After your adventures cool off by the beach. Head to The Strand to grab a gelato or take the kids to play under the water park.

Wanders of wonder: Townsville North Queensland’s must-do walks Next time you’re in the region for an event, why not lace-up and head off the beaten track to explore a different side of Townsville North Queensland? There is a huge variety of walking and hiking trails to discover, spanning from challenging rocky climbs to rainforest meanders and multi-day hikes. Here is just a handful of our must-try trails.
Wallaman Falls Where: 51km west of Ingham Why: Australia’s highest single drop waterfall Time/Distance: Djyinda Walk 2 hours/3.2km return It takes a little while to reach the Wallaman Falls section of Girringun National Park, but the awaiting scene makes the drive well worth it. Not only can you watch the crystal-clear water tumbling 268m — the escaping mist combining with sunlight and forming a rainbow against the brown jagged rocks — but there are also 110km worth of walks in the area, varying from 45 minutes to three days in length. The two-hour Djyinda Walk offers a happy medium. It begins 300m from the Wallaman Falls Lookout and winds
through the open forest along the escarpment. There are views of the Herbert River Valley and the track ends up at the base of the Falls.
Many Peaks Track Where: Pallarenda, Townsville Why: The heart rate and the views Time/Distance: 3 hours/5.7km one way (you can return on the flat Lagoon trail – 2 hours/4.6km) Accessed from the dirt track that starts opposite Walter Nesbit Park at Pallarenda, this heart-starting 5.7km (one-way) trail snakes its way through different terrain including boulders, vine thickets and woodland. Catch your breath while you drink in views over the Town Common wetlands and along the coastline.

The Forts Walk Where: Magnetic Island, off Townsville Why: Koalas, sparkling ocean vista and fascinating WWII history Time/Distance: 1.5 hours return/4km
Of the longer walks, the moderatelygraded Cloudy Creek is well-worth a look. At 4km return, it starts 200m beyond McClelland’s lookout and takes you to Witts Lookout, where on a clear day, you can see out to Halifax Bay and the Palm Islands. To continue to Cloudy Creek from here, you need to follow the track to the left, which takes you further into the rainforest to a series of small waterfalls. A word of warning — some sections of this walk are steep and require careful boulder hopping. Make sure you have a refreshing dip in Big or Little Crystal Creek on the way back down.
Keen to see a koala? Magnetic Island has the largest wild koala colony in Australia, spot them on the Forts Walk — with its resident marsupials often in plain sight along the main trail. Coupled with spectacular views and fascinating history, the Forts Walk is one of the region’s most popular walks.

Where: Paluma Range National Park, 71km north of Townsville Why: Rainforest discovery in cool bliss Time/Distance: Various – 300m to 4km
Where: Hinchinbrook Island, 8km east of Cardwell Why: It’s described as a “holy grail for walkers” (Lonely Planet) Time/Distance: Total trail is about four days, but you can do parts in a couple of hours
If you’re visiting during the warmer time of year, Paluma — otherwise known as the ‘village in the clouds’ — offers wonderful respite from the humidity. Being a part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, it also has some amazing rainforest trails that suit walkers of all levels, ranging from 300m to 4km.
Described by Lonely Planet as a “landscape spectacular of sandy beaches, precipitous headlands, waterfalls, rugged mountains, mangrove forests, coral reefs, sheltered bays and dense rainforests,”
surrounded by the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, this famous trail is on the bucket list of many experienced hikers. Thirty-two kilometres in its entirety and notoriously challenging, it’s recommended that hikers allow four days and three nights (minimum) to trek between Ramsay Bay and George Point to best appreciate the spectacular scenery and swim in the beautiful water. There are seven campsites over the course of this technically difficult trail, but be sure to book to get your permit well ahead if you’re thinking of visiting during a peak period, as numbers are capped. You don’t have to be a multi-day hiker to sample the Thorsborne Trail, you can do part of the walk, like George Point to Mulligan Falls (7.5km, or 2.5 hours hiking time — you can access George Point via water taxi). Or if you can get to Zoe Bay via a private vessel you will not be disappointed. Scale to the top rock pool via a rope and you can cool off in a series of natural rock baths while looking out into Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. It doesn’t get much better!

Top scuba diving courses and tours from Townsville If you’re keener than a parrotfish on coral to discover the underwater world, getting your scuba certification will likely be at the top of the #lifegoals list. The central section of the Great Barrier Reef – which encompasses the likes of Lodestone Reef, Wheeler Reef, Keeper Reef, Davies Reef and Bramble Reef – is one of the more pristine locales to earn your ticket. There are five main players in the dive game in Townsville North Queensland, so to help you figure out the best option for you, read this first.
Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive Adrenalin know their shiz when it comes to diving and snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef. Take a day trip to Lodestone Reef and experience an easy introduction to scuba diving in this pristine reef environment, where you’ll spot rays, giant clams, anemone and clownfish, starfish and reef sharks. This day trip departs Townsville and Magnetic Island every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. If you’re keen to take things further and dive straight into Open Water certification, you can complete the e-learning and pool session with Adrenalin in Townsville and take two day trips to Lodestone to complete the dives needed to bag your registration. Advanced divers can join their SS Yongala day trip and experience one of the best shipwreck dives in the world, scheduled for Wednesdays and Saturdays. But if you want to dive, eat, sleep, repeat, the best option is their threenight liveaboard trip. Think: Maximum 20 people, three whole days of floating over the magical Great Barrier Reef, plenty of food, and 10 dives – including two night dives and two dives on the Yongala wreck.
Remote Area Dive Remote Area Dive – or RAD – is a one-stop shop for locals and visitors wanting to immerse themselves in the secret world of scuba. Their instructors run lessons for PADI Open Water certification after-hours during the week, and put students through their final skills paces on a weekend of dives on the Great Barrier Reef. But it’s not as simple as it sounds; the trip is a total game changer. Nowhere else on the Great Barrier Reef can you combine sunny days of A-class diving with camping overnight in a set-up that would make Gilligan proud. For those progressing through their Advanced Open Water certification, you’ll also have the chance to complete a night dive while skipper ‘Pops’ cooks up a hearty feast. You’ll sleep like a salt-soaked baby with camp stretchers and swags pre-made with linen provided, before waking up to a cooked breakfast the next morning to fuel up for two more dives.
You’d swear Pops breathes through gills, but he actually only started diving in his early 50s – a shining example that you’re never too old to give it a go. “I saw all these people diving every day off Magnetic Island [where I live] and I thought, ‘I’ve always wanted to do that, I live on the Great Barrier Reef, why aren’t I out there doing it?!’” he says. Every couple of months, when the weather is just right, RAD will arrange trips to Bramble Reef – further offshore. Because this reef is more exposed it’s affected by weather, so you need perfect conditions to do this tour.

Day 2 Ingham to Tully (1 hour 10mins) Tully is home to the Golden Gumboot and renowned as the wettest town in Australia. So when you’re in the home of the rubber boot you know a wet and wild experience is on the agenda. Adrenaline junkies can navigate their way down the mighty Tully River on a thrilling whitewater rafting expedition, or for those who prefer a slower pace, take in the sights of the beautiful Tully River on a Kayak Tour with Ingan Tours. Overnight at Mission Beach Mission Beach sits amongst a World Heritage listed rainforest fronting 14 kilometres of golden, sandy beach – a tropical paradise that is sure to impress. Forget Paris; Townsville’s boutique shopping is better than you think Paris. Milan. New York. Townsville. Okay, we might be slightly exaggerating but Townsville sure has changed and the city’s boutique shopping scene is bound to impress any fashionista or shopaholic. From antiques to fashion, homewares and furniture, there’s an awesome range of boutiques that will motivate you to shop, literally till you drop.
Gregory Street Gregory Street sits under the shadow of Castle Hill and is a short distance from Flinders Street along The Strand. This strip has great cafes, fashion boutiques and a few homeware stores. Be sure to stick your nose into… Billie & Me Love longer hemlines, floaty styles, bold patterns and colours? This store is for you. It’s kitted out for the tropics with loose kaftans, maxi dresses, capes
and statement jewellery perfect for the woman who wants a little more sparkle in their life. There’s also a fantastic collection of brightly coloured handbags, beads, scarves and purses. Together by Jaxx Copy Kendall and Kylie’s Coachella style (for your day out at Townsville’s Groovin the Moo, of course), and make like a bee to Jaxx. The racks are heaving with a bohemian inspired collection of well-known and upcoming Australian labels. Check out their own label as well as MINKPINK, Industrie, Play it Right and Finders Keepers. Urban Loft Underestimated the heat of the tropics? Never fear, Urban Loft has something cool to wear including a tonne of sweet paisley prints. You’ll also find kids clothes, jewellery, decorative cushions, linen and homewares, soaps and bathroom products. The Home Room Whoever said holidays have to end hasn’t been to The Home Room! Pick up locally crafted items like heavenlyscented retro milk bottle candles (the melon was to die for) or super cute sustainable bamboo tumblers, and take your holiday memories home.
Flinders Street Head towards the city centre to Townsville’s Flinders Street for a long line of boutiques and some top spots to stop and refuel.
The Strand Emporium The Hamptons come to North Queensland at this cool little coastal store with its white-washed tongue and groove walls, neutral tones, blue and white prints, and seashell accents. Pop in for beach inspired décor, batik resort wear, accessories, furniture and homewares. Refuel with a coffee, sandwich or homemade treat at the café inside. A Few Beautiful Things You won’t find just a few beautiful things here, you’ll find an Aladdin’s cave of rare and unusual finds. Fossick through shelves laden with antiques, vintage and new collectables and pick up some quirky trinkets. Find nanna’s finest tea set, new and secondhand books, cushions, furniture, handbags and a mass of odd bod ornaments. Bluebell Trading Jam packed with fun and thoughtful gift ideas and homewares, you can’t go past Bluebell Trading when buying for the person who has everything. Gecko Interiors It’s impossible not to smile while browsing through Gecko Interiors. With an explosion of colour and bursting full of quirky gift ideas and homewares, this boutique will inspire even the most novice home decorator.

Hazel Mai Calling all clubbers and race goers, this is your one-stop shop for a big day (or night) out. You’ll find Aussie labels like Mosaic, La Escada, Kalenta and Heart of the Glass as well as the exclusively stocked Melbourne-based brand Mossman and Billini shoes. Top off your outfit with a choice of accessories, sunnies and bags. Milou Dresshouse Forget the little black dress, this place has the little red dress, the little blue dress and every other coloured dress you could possibly want. Whether it’s a wedding or a hot date, just make sure you drop by this store in the middle of the day and take advantage of the ah-mazing air conditioning.
City Arcade, Flinders Street City Arcade – just next door to City Lane – is Townsville’s newest fashion, food and retail precinct and the light, bright shopping sanctuary should not be missed. Bianco Lane From the banana tree wallpaper to the fresh fashions, this little boutique is a temptress for those who love to be on trend. Find statement pieces with chic finishes from Ministry of Style, Staple the Label, Asilio, Luvalot, Three of Something, August Street and Sol Sana Shoes.
Palmer Street Across Ross Creek is Palmer Street, home to Townsville’s bustling pavement dining scene. Tear yourself away from JAM’s Asian chicken omelette (if you can!) for these two boutiques. Stellar Moda Stellar Moda stocks edgy, bohemian and vintage styles personally selected from labels like Lucette, Kachel, Barbarella Vintage, Talulah, Wayne Cooper and Mogil. It’s so close to some of the best cafés in town that you can pop by between courses. Le Val on Palmer Get weekend ready with Le Val on Palmer’s fun, playful and youthful styles.
