World Health Organization Older adults prefer to remain independent, stay active and age in their own homes as long as possible. To do that, they need to be aware of the full range of services, support programs and opportunities for social and civic engagement available to them.

Bridge the Gap is a comprehensive resource guide that provides clear, reliable information on local programs and services older adults need to fully enjoy the quality-of-life Uxbridge has to offer.

This guide provides seniors with a one-stop source of information in print and digital formats on a broad range of interests and needs ranging from medical and social services, to recreational and cultural activities, to professional services and volunteer opportunities.

Creating and presenting information in this kind of targeted way makes it easier for older adults to engage with the community, participate in civic affairs and network with others. Bridge the Gap also contains informative articles on a variety of important topics related to health, safety and independent living.

After two years of restricted, nearly house-bound activity due to the coronavirus pandemic, seniors are emerging from the shelter of their homes to re-engage with community life. The publication of this guide is a timely resource to help make the transition safe and rewarding.

Publishing the guide, distributing it widely throughout the community and making it available online will be welcomed by the senior population as a significant step in support of our shared vision: “Uxbridge is a community that values, respects and actively supports the safety, diversity and well-being of seniors. We continuously strive to remove barriers that might lessen the ability of our residents to age actively in the community through all stages of their lives.”

Enjoying Your

RETIREMENT YEARS

After spending decades in the workforce, the golden years of retirement are finally here!

When you’ve been working for decades and then your daily life suddenly changes, it can be difficult to adjust. The best thing about retirement is that you finally have the time to see the world, try new hobbies and cross things off your “to-do” list that you never previously had the time for. Whatever challenges you face as you prepare for this next chapter in life, welcome them with open arms, an open mind and an open heart.

An excellent place to begin your new chapter of life as a retiree is by developing a daily routine that suits your interests and lifestyle. Life can be full of uncertainty, and routines can replace the structure that previously came from a career.

Daily routines are known to reduce stress and anxiety, encourage a healthy sleeping schedule, and increase mobility.

Beginning your day at a set time, going for daily walks around the neighbourhood, completing chores, running errands and going to bed at the same time every day are just a few ways to begin developing a day-to-day routine. Keep in mind that routines are certainly not meant to be a strict schedule, more like an empowering way to incorporate some stability and a sense of control in this new chapter of your life!

STAYING ACTIVE Staying active and getting daily exercise is important at any age, but especially after retirement. It is recommended that adults ages 65 and over get 150 minutes of physical activity per week, or around 30 minutes a day. Exercise can be as small as doing light yard work and walking your dog around the neighbourhood or more involved activities such as yoga, swimming and light jogging.

Determining which activities and hobbies make you happy is an important step toward finding satisfaction and giving yourself a sense of purpose outside of your career.

Senior residents of Uxbridge can find a wide variety of activities, clubs and organizations to take part in throughout the year.

GIVING BACK Volunteering at a local organization such as The Loaves and Fishes Food Bank, The Rotary Club of Uxbridge, The Optimist Club of Uxbridge or the Uxbridge Fall Fair, to name a few, are great ways to give back, meet new people who have similar interests, and keep one’s finger on the pulse of our community. Volunteering keeps the brain active and can contribute to a positive outlook on life, and may also lower the risk of dementia, depression and other mental health concerns.

It’s important to make time for leisure in your retirement, too. With more time than ever to achieve your goals and dreams, now is the time to take the vacation you’ve always wanted, learn a new skill, take up a new hobby or even relocate.

Retirement is the time to do what makes you happy and leaves you feeling fulfilled.

Whether you decide to stop and smell the roses or swing for the fences, it’s important to make sure what you do after retirement matters to you.

Uxbridge Seniors Centre:

NEW & IMPROVED

Since first opening its doors in 1992, the Uxbridge Seniors Centre has been the home of the Uxbridge Senior Citizens Club (USCC), and as of 2018, the Uxbridge Youth Centre.

This large, multipurpose space has recently undergone some exciting renovations and is ready to be enjoyed by existing members and new members alike!

Building improvements at the Uxbridge Seniors Centre were made possible by generous funding from the federal and provincial governments. The Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF) Small Projects Component provided 80% funding from the Federal Government ($102,897)

and 20% funding from the Provincial Government ($25,724). The new and improved accessible washrooms feature flush comfort height toilets, vanities, grab bars, automatic doors and lights, as well as larger stalls. Also new to the Uxbridge Seniors Centre is the Gathering Place, a cozy lounge area for seniors to congregate and socialize. The Gathering Place is equipped with a seating area, kitchen space, computer, chess board, puzzles and a big screen television.

The Uxbridge Senior Citizens Club is dedicated to enhancing the lives of all Uxbridge seniors by providing a welcoming place for participation in activities that enable members to learn, develop friendships, and experience an enhanced quality of life within our community. Community members aged 55 years and older are welcome to join USCC and take part in a wide variety of activities and programming, including bridge, shuffleboard, walking meditation, Djembe drumming, line dancing, Zumba, yoga, cribbage, euchre and art classes. Activities take place Monday to Friday and alternating Saturday evenings. Yearly membership can be purchased for an annual fee of $15.

Having both the Uxbridge Seniors Citizens Club and the Uxbridge Youth Centre sharing the same facility provides a unique intergenerational aspect and an opportunity for youth and seniors of Uxbridge to connect. The Uxbridge Youth Centre offers a free, safe and supervised space for youth to stop by after school and enjoy daily programs, including sports, crafting, cooking, gaming, and hanging out with friends.

The Uxbridge Seniors Centre is available for event, meeting and other activity rentals. The venue has a capacity of 150 individuals and is equipped with air conditioning, a full kitchen and can be licensed. Living

INDEPENDENTLY For older adults, living alone may present unique challenges.

Routine household tasks may become more tedious, less social interaction may lead to feelings of loneliness, and the lack of mobility during aging increases the risk of medical emergencies. Thankfully, there are many ways to make aging easier, safer and less stressful for seniors and their families.

STAYING SAFE WHILE LIVING ALONE If you live alone, special emergency systems like a medical alert bracelet or necklace can give you and your family greater peace of mind. These devices will connect remotely to a separate unit in your home, which then calls a 24/7 call centre with medically trained staff who can get you the right help when you need it most.

HOME AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICES Home and community support services can be of great help if you wish to continue living as independently as possible but still would like to benefit from receiving services that can contribute to your health and well-being. These services are offered through Community Care Durham, with locations throughout the region.

These emergency systems can be literal lifesavers. The Institute on Aging estimates that 1-in-4 seniors have a fall every year, and the National Council on Aging has found that falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal, trauma-related hospital admissions for seniors and the elderly.

Adult day programs provide half-day or full-day programming for elderly people who live alone, including those with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Some benefits from these programs include a variety of enriching recreational and social activities, meals, personal care and basic healthcare services that can be tailored to your needs.

Falls and other medical emergencies aren’t the only safety risks that can affect seniors. Power outages and fires are also causes of concern when living independently. It’s important to ensure your smoke detectors are in working order and develop an exit plan in the event of a fire. Stocking up on spare batteries and keeping flashlights around your home will make it easier to deal with an unexpected power outage.

Assisted living and supportive housing care programs provide a variety of support to highrisk seniors. Support workers will help with medications, personal hygiene and dressing, and homemaking chores, such as grocery shopping, light housecleaning and light meal preparation. Assisted living and supportive housing care give seniors regular social interaction and welfare check-ups while giving their families a bit of peace of mind.

MOVING INTO A RETIREMENT COMMUNITY Retirement homes are perfect for seniors who want to maintain a sense of independence in their later years. Living in a retirement community is a great way to maintain social connections, partake in new hobbies and activities, stay active, and spend more time enjoying retirement.

There are no specific criteria for those who wish to live in a retirement community, making it a nice option for seniors who wish to live in a communal setting or simply downsize their living accommodations. Since retirement homes receive no government funding, seniors who wish to live in a retirement home will enter into a tenancy agreement with the home.

In addition to paying for their accommodations, residents can pick and choose any care services they wish to purchase. These services can include meals, assistance with personal hygiene and incontinence, help with dressing or mobility, dementia care and help with medications. Some retirement homes may have a doctor, nurse or pharmacist on-site to provide health services.

MAKING THE TRANSITION Making a decision about how you will spend your retirement years can be daunting.

Thankfully, there are a variety of services and resources for seniors and their loved ones that can make the tough decisions easier. Reaching out to local organizations like Community Care Durham is a great first stepping stone to begin familiarizing yourself with the variety of services and options available for seniors in Durham Region. Making time to speak to local retirement communities and long term care providers can also lend a helping hand and provide a wealth of information. Take advantage of the resources available to you to help you successfully transition into enjoying your golden years in our exceptional community!

The Importance of

SOCIAL CONNECTION Social connection is vital for the mental health of society as a whole, but especially for seniors and older adults.

Older adults are at increased risk for loneliness and social isolation because they are more likely to live alone, have less mobility, experience the loss of family or friends, and suffer chronic health issues.

A study from the National Academy of Sciences states that seniors with limited social lives are more likely to suffer from a variety of physical and mental health concerns, such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiac failure, depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Fortunately, numerous studies suggest that an active social life is one of the most effective ways for seniors to maintain or improve their mental and physical health.

The World Health Organization’s report on aging and health suggests that maintaining a social life is key to aging more successfully and may result in numerous health benefits.

JOIN THE CLUB Finding an activity that you enjoy, taking up a new hobby, or joining a club are great ways to have fun, meet people with similar interests and stay connected. The Uxbridge Seniors Centre offers a variety of activities and classes.

EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY As we have all discovered throughout the pandemic, technology is a great way to bridge the gap and connect with our families and friends. Weekly Zoom meetings with far-away friends and family, joining social media sites like Facebook, or even creating an email address for daily correspondence are great ways to stay connected through the internet. If you’re not very tech-savvy, consider reaching out to a family member or friend for tips, or keep your eyes out for computer classes at the library or Seniors Centre.

With retirement comes the freedom to finally spend your time the way you want. Making the most of this time by maintaining social relationships and becoming part of a local group is more than just fun, it’s great for your health and well-being too!

Top Tips for

FALL PREVENTION For seniors, fracturing or breaking a bone can be the catalyst for more serious health problems.

A report from the Government of Canada states that falls are the leading cause of injuries among Canadians 65 years and over, with around 20% to 30% of seniors experiencing one fall each year. Their research also finds that falls account for 85% of seniors’ injury-related hospitalizations, making this the leading cause of injury-related admissions for seniors.

Here’s some good news, though! If you make a conscious effort to take care of your overall health in your golden years, you may be able to lower your chances of falling. Here are 7 tips to help you avoid falls and broken bones.

STAY PHYSICALLY ACTIVE

GET ENOUGH SLEEP

Getting regular exercise will help you maintain your mobility, which in turn will lower your risk of falling. Staying active is one of the best ways to improve your balance, strength, flexibility, and endurance. Not only that, exercise will help improve your mental health, energy levels and sleep.

Getting enough sleep goes hand in hand with staying physically active. When you develop a regular nighttime routine and get enough sleep every night, you’ll stay mentally alert and more aware of your surroundings, thus reducing your risk of falling.

WEAR APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR

SCHEDULE REGULAR VISION AND HEARING CHECK-UPS

Wearing comfortable, well-fitting footwear is an important consideration to make in our day-to-day lives, especially for seniors. Be sure to choose shoes with non-skid rubber soles and low-heels that will fully support your feet. Avoid walking up and down stairs or on floors when you’re wearing socks or any shoes and slippers that have smooth soles.

As you get older, your sense of sight tends to diminish, and the slightest changes in your sight and hearing may cause you to fall. Always wear your glasses or contacts when you need them, and if you have a hearing aid, be sure that it fits you well and that you wear it regularly.

USE ANY MEDICATION AS DIRECTED BY YOUR PHYSICIAN Just like a new pair of glasses or a hearing aid, there’s an adjustment period when you begin a new medication.

Medications are one of the most frequent causes of falls, and as we age, our bodies take more time to break down medicine which will lengthen any side effects like dizziness or drowsiness. Taking more medication means the greater the risk of accidental injury, so be sure to familiarize yourself with your medications and their side effects, and use your medication as directed by your doctor.

USE AN ASSISTIVE DEVICE IF REQUIRED If you need help with your balance, using a cane or walker may be encouraged by your doctor. It’s important to make sure these assistive devices are the correct size for you, and that any wheels roll smoothly.

This is especially important when you’re walking in unfamiliar areas or where the walkways are uneven, like on sidewalks.

MAKE YOUR HOME SAFER Falls most often occur in the bathroom when using the toilet or showering, or at night when visibility is lower around the home. Consider installing grab bars and using a non-slip bath mat in the shower, using brighter lightbulbs, and getting rid of any obstacles such as loose carpets, cords, and other tripping hazards. Wearing a medical alert bracelet or lanyard around your home makes it easier and faster to get medical attention in the event of a fall.

WHAT TO DO

IF YOU FALL If you do fall, it’s important to stay as calm as possible. Take a few moments to assess the situation and try to determine if you’re hurt before getting up — getting up too quickly or in the wrong way could make an injury much worse.

If you believe you’re able to get up safely without help, roll over onto your side.

Take a moment to rest and allow your body and blood pressure to adjust, then, slowly rise up on your hands and knees and crawl over to a sturdy chair. Place your hands on the seat and slide one foot forward so that it’s flat on the floor. Keep your other leg bent so the knee is on the floor. From this kneeling position, slowly rise and turn your body to sit in the chair.

If you’re hurt or can’t get up on your own, ask someone for help or call 911. If you’re alone, try to get into a comfortable position while you wait for help to arrive.

Staying Safe

& SECURE:

Frauds & Scams Despite all of the ways the Internet can benefit us, it can also act as a hunting ground for scam artists.

Earlier this year, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) reported that Canadians of all ages lost an estimated $379 million to scams and fraud in 2021, an increase of 130% compared to 2020. Although identity theft and fraud can strike those of all ages, seniors may be particularly vulnerable and targetted more frequently by scammers.

GRANDPARENT SCAM One of the most prevalent scams targeting seniors is a “Grandparent scam”, in which a scammer contacts an unsuspecting senior and pretends to be their grandchild or a close family member who is in trouble and in need of financial help — and may plead with the victim to keep it a secret. In this scenario, the scam artist may tell their target that they have been arrested and need bail money, have been in a car accident and need money to cover hospital costs or are having trouble returning from a foreign country. Once hooked, the scammer will then give their victim a phone number to call, which will be answered by someone who is pretending to be a doctor, lawyer or police officer. If you receive a call like this, do not wire any money or give the caller any further personal information. The best thing to do in this situation is hang up and call a family member to confirm that they aren’t actually in any trouble.

PHISHING Spam or “phishing” emails are another common way that scammers can target their victims online. Be wary of replying to these emails, even just to ask to unsubscribe. These emails might look and sound legitimate, but in reality, genuine organizations like banks or government authorities will never ask to send your personal information via email.

If you receive an email asking you to visit a website to “update”, “validate” or “confirm” your account information, be skeptical.

Delete the email right away and be sure to not click any links or open attachments, as these links may contain viruses that will attack your computer.

PASSWORDS To avoid becoming the victim of identity theft or fraud, it’s important to remain vigilant and take the necesary precautions to keep your personal and banking information safe.

A strong password is often your first line of defence. The more difficult a password is to crack, the the harder it will be for scammers to steal your personal information. If you’re worried about forgetting your passwords, use a password manager to help you create and organize them.

The CAFC estimates that only 5% of fraud cases are reported. If you think you or someone you know has been a victim of fraud, be sure to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or file a report online at www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca
