Editor's Note Hey Key Clubbies!!

Welcome to my very first Key Club newsletter! I’m so excited to serve as your Bulletin Editor for the ‘22-’23 service year – it seems just yesterday that I joined Key Club as a freshman and learned that community service was something I’m passionate about. As a member of the Events Committee during the ‘21-’22 service year, I’ve always been enthusiastic about finding new projects and volunteer opportunities for our THHSKC community to participate in, and I’m honored to have the privilege to serve everyone this year as part of the cabinet. Key Club has truly been an amazing part of my life ever since I entered this school, and I can’t wait to help make it an amazing part of yours too! “Join Key Club! It’s free hours!”

Those were the words that hooked me into Key Club. Well, I thought it was an easy way to get my 40 hours for the school year. 402 community service hours, 103 events, and 3 years later, I’m the president of the largest and best Key Club in division 8. I never imagined a club that I joined for easy community service hours would have such a huge impact on my life.

I clearly remember the breast cancer walk as it was my first event as a member of Key Club. All I can remember from that day is the fun I had -- meeting new faces, talking to friends as we took pictures, and helping around at different stations. The feelings of nostalgia are hitting me right now as I write this but I had an amazing time and by the end of that event, I almost forgot that I attended to get the 5 hours of community service.

As I kept attending meetings and events, I began to make more friends through Key Club, and to me it became more than just a free service hour club.

It became a place where I would be able to meet new people and actively help others in the most direct way possible. As a mere freshman, I wanted to make this club even better than it already was and expand the community so that others could be offered the experiences I had. On top of making an impact on Key Club, I knew I wanted to help lead after seeing how the past leaders of Key Club would always be able to help others and diligently organize events.

I admired them and looked up to them. I found in Key Club, not only friends and memories but role models as well.

What I’m trying to say is that Key Club became a bigger and bigger part of my life. On top of the community I had found in Key Club, I was now able to view and manage the inner workings of the club I loved so much.

Not long after becoming president, the feeling of accomplishment was overshadowed by the reality of the work that went into it. From the very beginning, Key Club started changing my idea of leadership. Words like “hardworking” and “smart” would come into mind when I thought of a leader but I soon realized it was a lot more than that .I learned that a leader has to be hardworking and smart BUT they must also have ambition, transparency, and the ability to take risks.

Despite being the so-called “leader” of Key Club, there was no way I could have managed Key Club alone. Through all those stressful times when Key Club and other activities started collapsing on me, I would rely on my board members. They were able to effectively accomplish their goals and lead the club. From the new Instagram, amazing fundraisers, and ideas, I simply couldn’t have accomplished all the goals I set for Key Club without their input and efforts. Without them, we wouldn’t have been able to go the distance we did and I really couldn’t have asked for a better board.

The next service year has already begun and I can already see the wonderful things being planned. I’ve had so much fun being a part of this amazing community during my high school experience and I hope I was able to make this club a better experience for you all. I truly wanted Key Club to be more than an organization or club, I wanted it to become a community where someone could make friends all the while striving for the same goals. Whether those goals were getting hours, meeting new friends, or genuinely wanting to make an impact, I wanted our members to bond under Key Club. Whether it was through our many inter-club fundraisers or discord server, I hope I was able to achieve my goal in some form or another.

Thank you to all my seniors for being part of this journey with me and thank you to the rest of you for being amazing members!

Now for my final words I’ll end it off with another quote: “Join Key Club! It’s not ONLY free hours!”

Farewell from the '21 - '22 Key Club Vice President Dear Key Club, Hi! I cannot believe this is the last time you’ll be hearing from me. It is absolutely insane that I am a senior and will now be retiring as your vice president.

They truly didn’t lie when they said to cherish your time in high school–it really does fly by in a blink of an eye.

I remember my first Key Club event: Walk to Cure Lupus all the way in 2018. After, Sharon Li (‘18-’19 THHS KC vice president) asked me to write a reflection, which I will sample here: “I was surrounded by people who made a difference in the world by walking the mile and advocating for the same cause that we did. I was able to feel the electric atmosphere that was present that day. I definitely learned a lot in merely a few hours, with this event forever leaving a mark on me and the many events to come.”

From my very first event, I knew that key club was going to be my home. In fact, I met two of my current best friends at that event which is so crazy–key club brings people together in such magical and memorable ways. Key club indeed left a forever mark on me, not only in the ways of how I can serve the community and make a difference in the world, but also within myself and who I am today. I went from shaking as I spoke on my first day as Bulletin Editor on Zoom (ugh key club in quarantine was not it) to confidently presenting myself in front of 200+ people in the auditorium and at events, and not being afraid to shout in the mic to tell you guys to quiet down (sorry about that LOL)!

At the start of my time as vice president, Justin and I did not know what we were doing, not going to lie. We had one year of experience on board and then were left to make decisions on our own that would determine the outcome of this greatly successful club. But we knew that whatever we did, we would help this club to its fullest potential and make it the best service year yet. And because of you guys, I can confidently say we accomplished our goal.

The sight of hundreds of students piling into the auditorium on Thursday at 3:15 PM never ceases to astound me. Thank you all for inspiring me. The level of commitment and dedication I’ve witnessed you all display, the friendships I’ve seen blossom, and the outstanding community of driven, go-getting future leaders that has formed within our club motivates and keeps me striving for more every day. I also just want to thank Justin, Erica Lee, Erica Jin, Kate, and Melinda for being the best board members I could have ever asked for.

To conclude, I want you all to know how proud I am of you for continuing to be selfless and sacrificing your time to serve your community. Each and every single one of you are making the world a better place, and I hope you continue to passionately attend events and have lots of fun while you’re at it! Key club will always hold a very, very special place in my heart and I hope it transforms you into the best version of yourself like it has done for me. Thank you for everything, Townsend Harris Key Club! I will always be here so always feel free to DM me about everything and anything! I’m beyond excited for the future of this club.

Since the start of freshman year, the compassionate morals behind serving and building a community drew me into Key Club. During my term as Bulletin Editor, my passion for Key Club exponentially grew and I had the pleasure of being the Division 8 Executive Assistant as well. Through all my experiences leading and facilitating events, I was taught something that school alone could not — the feeling of joy. I am honored to be overlooking such a widespread club and meeting dedicated Key Clubbers at events each weekend. Every single one of you has never failed to bring back my faith in humanity despite the rough world around us.

What I liked a lot about this event were the stations they had all over the walk, where they not only gave information about water but also gave us activities where we were placed into roles of people with little water. Spring has sprung and NYSoM was here to usher it in! NYSoM hosted a special park cleanup in Brooklyn – a two hour park cleanup session that all from the community were welcome to participate in. Volunteering duties include giving gloves, trash bags and other tools to clean up safely.

The weather was on and off, drizzled a bit and then became sunny. There were a lot of bottle caps and glass on the floor, but it was fun to go with people. Hopefully, more people show up next time and I'd probably do it again!
