MINDWORKS CLASS

Staying Physically and Mentally Active As we age, all of us begin to experience some instances of forgetfulness, like misplacing our keys or occasionally forgetting an appointment, which is normal. If you begin to have more consistent trouble remembering or doing everyday things, you may be developing memory loss or early dementia. Annie is a person who found herself in this situation, but through the caring work of her children, she found a great program that has made a positive difference in her life and theirs.

After Annie started to experience memory loss severe enough for her to stop driving, she found herself sitting alone at home every day.

Before her memory loss began, she was very social, frequently seeing friends and her children. Now she was

bored and becoming less engaged in social interaction. Her children were becoming more concerned, particularly due to the pandemic and because she lived by herself.

Annie’s son, David, connected with the Outagamie County Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) and was referred to Fox Valley Memory Project.

They recommended a program called Mindworks, which would provide social engagement twice a week in Menasha.

Annie immediately found the class to be exactly what she needed. She enjoyed meeting new people, playing trivia games, listening to some of her favorite songs, and getting regular exercise.

Her involvement has been a blessing to David and his siblings, as Annie now has something to look forward

to each week and continues to live happily in her Fox Valley home.

Mindworks is just one of many programs Fox Valley Memory Project offers to people living with memory loss, their care partners, and families.

It’s a facilitated program designed for people with early to midstage symptoms of dementia. The curriculum provides opportunities for enhanced social connections while promoting brain health and overall wellness.

This program also provides respite opportunities for caregivers and family members while participants are engaged in the Mindworks class.

More specifically, the class focuses on physical movement, like chair exercise and stretching; cognitive fitness

There’s also a focus on nutrition, including a well-balanced lunch during class. Special outings to local attractions round out the curriculum.

Dementia and other forms of memory loss aren’t something that have to be tackled alone. Mindworks and similar programs help caregivers feel like they’re part of a team, and those experiencing memory loss are given an opportunity to reclaim their individuality.

Currently, Mindworks classes are offered Tuesday through Thursday at the following locations in the Fox Valley:

Northeast Wisconsin is a fantastic destination for those that love natural beauty, friendly people, delicious food and drink, and unexpected adventures.

Whether you want to make a day of it on the trails or have a local craft brew, there is something for everyone in this corner of the Badger state.

Experiencing the Outdoors When it comes to outdoor fun, the pristine landscapes and diverse wildlife of northeast Wisconsin are ready for exploration. If you want to explore on the water, you can take up a paddle, strap on a life jacket and get ready to kayak in Manitowish Waters.

You can rent solo or tandem kayaks at River’s Edge, who also provide

expert guidance and advice for a day on the river.

Wisconsin is home to world-class bike manufacturing, which makes sense when we have some of the best bike trails around. A fantastic way to explore Vilas County is on two wheels on the Heart of Vilas Bike Trail, recognized as a National Recreation Trail. The trail offers riders more than 52 miles of paved trails that connect St. Germain, Sayner, Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters, and Mercer. to take it a little slower and get around on two feet. The ChequamegonNicolet National Forest covers more than 1.5 million acres of Wisconsin’s Northwoods and has several great hiking paths. I recommend Cathedral Pines, a 40-acre grove of white pine, hemlock, and red pine, or the Headwaters Wilderness, where you’ll find some of the largest and oldest trees in the forest. Both areas are great for birdwatching.

Fun for the Whole Family Of course, nature can be explored by all ages, but there are some particularly great places to visit and explore for those who want to bring along the kids or grandkids.

GENERAL | 19 If you’re looking for adventure on the high seas, you can set sail in Eagle River at Pirates Hideaway. Take in the scenery while also enjoying the fun of sailing on a pirate ship where kids can take the helm. Back on dry land, the Hideaway has ice cream for everyone and a tiki bar for the grown-ups.

Kids of all ages will really love Sweet Memories Candy Shoppe in Lakewood.

Here you can find an old-fashioned player piano, a vintage 1959 Coke machine, gourmet ice cream, and a great selection of treats made right on site: homemade chocolates, fudge, caramel corn, cheese corn, flavored candied corn, and brittles.

Whether you want to make a day of it on the trails or have a local craft brew, there is something for everyone in this corner of the Badger state.

Explore Locally There are many more options to explore the beauty of the outdoors only found in this part of the world. Take a leisurely drive down the Nicolet-Wolf River Scenic Byway, a drive that’s especially perfect in the fall colors. Or take in a relaxing boat ride with Minocqua Pontoon Cruises in the Minocqua Chain of Lakes.

There are also great experiences special to this area. At the Twig’s Beverage Company, you can take their museum tour (which includes free samples!).

While you’re in Shawano, you can also take a barn quilt tour and see more than 300 barn quilts on display on barns throughout the county.

In Wittenberg, you can see murals

throughout the village in a Walls of Wittenberg mural tour.

You can also find wineries and breweries throughout the area, a great way to taste some local flavor. For wineries, there is Woodland Trail Winery in Lakewood, Forgotten Fire Winery in Peshtigo, and Three Lakes Winery in Three Lakes (all three located in picturesque vineyards).

If a cold beer is what you’re looking

for, there’s Pigeon River Brewing in Marion, Rhinelander Brewing in Rhinelander, Tribute Brewing in Eagle River, and Some Nerve Brewing in Manitowish Waters.

The FLU SHOT

A Shot in the Arm for Protection

The winter 2020 influenza season was a very strange one. Influenza infections were down dramatically all over the world. In the United States, we had a test positivity rate of less than 1 percent, meaning less than 1 percent of the people who thought they had the flu tested positive for it. The rate is usually between 20 and 30 percent. Deaths and hospitalizations from the flu were way down too. Public health experts believe that the efforts to control the spread of COVID-19 infections through

wearing masks, social distancing, and handwashing greatly reduced the spread of flu viruses.

That was last year; this year is likely to be different. We are not social distancing or wearing masks as we were globally last year. This is in part due to the effective COVID-19 vaccines that are available and have allowed reopening of the country. That, however, plays into the return of influenza cases. As such, it’s strongly recommended that

you get your flu shot to protect you from the illness because the risk of exposure appears to be greater this year. Also, we are still experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks across the country, so the ability to get care at a hospital may be affected. Many people with medical problems other than COVID-19 infections are experiencing difficulties in getting timely care.

Seven Dimensions of Wellness AND THEIR IMPORTANCE TO OLDER ADULTS

Wellness is a broad, all-encompassing term that falls within a number of categories in everyday life. A framework known as the Seven Dimensions of Wellness breaks individual health into spiritual, physical, emotional, career, intellectual, environmental, and social components.

Through each stage, the Seven Dimensions of Wellness play an important role in achieving a

fulfilling life. This is especially true for older adults, where several of the dimensions play a fundamental part of living a fulfilling life post-retirement.

“All seven of the dimensions of wellness are important for our entire community,” says Rob Breidenbach, regional wellness director with Oak Park Place. Rob singled out three specific dimensions as especially

beneficial to older adults: physical, emotional, and social.

The Emotional Dimension It’s no secret the pandemic has been a challenging time for people of all ages, but this has been especially true for older adults, who are shown to be particularly vulnerable. “We address our physical dimension by having routinely scheduled exercise classes for our residents to partake in,” explains Rob. “We cover different forms of yoga to improve flexibility, and strength training to help with lower back, joint issues, and body fatigue. We really focus a lot on balance training to try eliminating falls, or at least lessen the devastating impact a fall can have.”

Thoughts play a crucial part of our quality of life, regardless of age. At Oak Park Place, Rob says staff members strive to create an environment that promotes positivity through classes, activities, and simple gestures.

“We discuss how negativity can sometimes run our decision-making processes,” says Rob. “That’s a key thing that we’re focused on. We inject humor into anything we try to do. It can be thrown into our classes, our demonstrations, or even just through the halls when we see residents play cards or foosball or any of the other games we have. We’ll go over and join them so we can help spark up conversations. It makes it more homelike.”

The Physical Dimension Throughout life, establishing a regular workout routine has proven beneficial in a number of ways. This is no exception at Oak Park Place, as residents are invited to partake in age- and skill-appropriate

The impact exercise has on the body is obvious, but Rob points out the benefits of mobility reap rewards in other ways as well. “It’s also incredibly mentally rewarding,” says Rob. “It helps ease some of the effects of depression and anxiety by releasing feel-good endorphins into the brain. It has a big impact on the cycle of negative thoughts and negative feelings that people can get into—especially in this day and age with what people are going through.”

The Social Dimension While the pandemic has necessitated adjustments, Rob says social activities remain an important part of day-to-day life at Oak Park Place. This is evidenced through such programs as trivia nights; today-in-history events; and an initiative known as Friday Flings that gives residents the opportunity to enjoy music, comedians, and storytelling as a community.

“We do what we can to create a safe and engaging atmosphere for all of our residents,” says Rob. “Our staff continues to wear masks all the time, even though everyone here is vaccinated. Even with that, we practice our social distancing at different events.”

Some of the other programs encouraging social interaction include a regular Walking Wednesdays activity and outdoor gatherings on Oak Park Place’s grounds, which Rob says are especially beneficial to the memorycare residents.

“We have a beautiful outdoor garden area that features a fountain with nice sounds of the water,” says Rob. “It gets lots of sunshine and has a great variety of trees. The residents just love being out there.”

Overall wellness isn’t just important during the pandemic. Having a strong foundation for each dimension provides a much more rewarding and fulfilling life regardless of what stage you’re experiencing and when. Outpatient THERAPY A PATHWAY TO BETTER HEALTH AND A BRIGHTER FUTURE COVID-19 has had a wide-reaching impact on the nation’s health beyond the virus itself, leading to a growing need for outpatient therapy services.

“The pandemic has led to a lot of elderly and middle-aged individuals becoming more sedentary,” says Ang Baeten, physical therapist at Rennes Health & Rehab Center - Peshtigo East. “With that, we’re finding declines of strength.”

But patients who are experiencing these general declines, as well as those recovering from illnesses, injuries, and surgeries, have a chance at a healthier

future with the help from providers who can support their rehabilitation journey.

That includes the trained physical, occupational, and speech language therapists who often specialize in issues associated with geriatrics.

These outpatient therapists can help with a general tune-up to help assess and decrease the risk of falls, which are the leading cause of death and serious injury among adults age 65+.

In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) state that one in four aging adults suffers a fall each

year. Therapists can test muscle strength, balance, and other factors that can lead increase the risk of falling.

Preventing injury due to declines in strength and coordination can also help minimize the growing cost of long-term hospitalizations and recovery in the country.

Therapists also work with clients who are dealing with joint pain, which may be caused by a number of age-related factors. Weight loss and exercise are two big ways to decrease pain on joints. Keeping up good mobility is

important because a decline in activity is also associated with the development of other health issues. Ang says, “Patients might say, ‘I used to walk all the way across the store, but now I got used to using the cart.’ So we might have a slide in cardiac health. As therapists, we’re able to find strength and balance deficits and help people improve that.”

Keeping up that activity and motion is key, and can improve health at any stage. “I have a saying that we need to keep moving so we don’t become the chair,” says Ang. “I often hear, ‘Well, I’m 96, what do you expect?’ But I’ve sent home people age 100+.”

Some therapists tap into additional specialized training, such as Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR!), to work with patients who are managing neurological challenges. Through that training, therapists learn to expect more of their patients. Ang says, “When we expect more, we get more. We have a good chance of achieving our goals if we’re motivated to do so.”

Rennes works with patients to achieve a strong outcome as efficiently and effectively as possible. Families can play a role in helping patients to recover, working with their loved ones to implement exercises and tools of health improvement. “As a therapist, I try to focus on what can I teach you to use in your toolbox to maintain your wellness,” says Ang. “We try to do what we can as efficiently as possible to meet the patient’s goals.”

That may include connecting patients with an assistive device, such as a walker, which may not be cosmetically appealing, but allows residents to stay home a little longer. Outpatient therapists also can provide home assessments to reduce falling hazards in a patient’s living space, to train them in the best way to use assistive devices, and offer exercises they can do at home to improve their balance.

“As physical therapists, we have a little extra time to spend with individuals, which allows us sometimes to get in a little more of the core problem,” says

Ang. “From an outpatient standpoint, how we’re able to empower them for their wellness is a real benefit.”

Age alone should never be justification for giving up on what the future can look like. Most of us don’t know how many more years we have ahead of ourselves, so staying in as good of health as possible to get the most out of today is truly a lifelong goal.
