Since Green Lake’s Founding in 1847 A Historical Vignette by The Dartford Historical Society
H I S T O R Y Anson Dart is recognized for the 1847 founding of Dartford, which became the village of Green Lake, Wisconsin in 1907. In the 175 years since its founding, Green Lake has become a sanctuary for its full- and part-time residents away from the clutter and demands of a chaotic young country. At the core of an area now referred to as “Green Lake Country,” the City of Green Lake was one of the earliest resort communities west of New York State. Its heart is the glacier that formed Green Lake. A depth of 237 feet deep, Green Lake is the deepest natural lake in Wisconsin – a little over 2 miles at its widest and about 7.5 miles long. Since its discovery by Native Americans and European settlers, the Lake has served as a focus of Indigenous ceremonial life; a fur-trading outpost; and a fishing, waterfowl-hunting, and resort destination. The City of Green Lake featured steamboats, mail delivery by Chris-Craft, its own opera house, great golf courses, gorgeous hotel and resort properties, youth camps, and vacation homes.

The wetlands complex and an adjacent bay provide a vital spawn area for fish and habitat for a variety of wildlife, including songbirds and amphibians. A short trail through the woods leads to a boardwalk that includes several rest benches.
14 | 2022 green lake wisconsin official map + travel guide
Start your day early and discover the sights and sounds of Green Lake’s birds. Be sure to bring your binoculars for better views, as Sunnyside, Snake Creek Wetlands, Hattie Sherwood Park, Mill Pond, White River Marsh State Wildlife Area, and the Green Lake Conference Center offer some of the best spots for bird enthusiasts.
2 ASSEMBLY CREEK
WEST OF GREEN LAKE CONFERENCE CENTER’S TEA HOUSE
This property includes 1,100 feet of Green Lake frontage, as well as Hammer’s Trail, a walking loop of approximately .7 miles, and five bridges over several creeks and springs. These waterways merge into Assembly Creek, which flows into Norwegian Bay.
3 WINNEBAGO TRAIL
PARK OFF OF OAKWOOD BEACH ROAD
SOUTH OFF HILLSIDE ROAD IN GREEN LAKE CONFERENCE CENTER
This 40-acre parcel of undeveloped land is located along Green Lake’s unspoiled south shore in Dickinson Bay. It also borders Spring Lake to create a riparian habitat for a large diversity of wildlife. An exceptionally scenic property with sandstone cliffs, shallow caves, and towering trees, Tichora features hiking, snowshoeing, and other allowable uses.

TRAILS: When the weather
starts getting warmer, it’s time to get out and explore! There are countless miles of paved, multi-use trails looping through the Green Lake area. Spring is the perfect time to walk, run, or bike them. The Green Lake Conference Center offers ever-changing scenery, from wooded sections along the lake to the Norwegian Bay Wetlands boardwalk, which stretches to the lakefront. BIRDING: Over 285 bird species make their home in Green Lake and another 128 migrate through the county each year! Spring is the perfect time to see migratory species and all the birds in their breeding best. Sunnyside Conservancy has over two miles of nature trails to explore as well as identification guides to some of the species you might spot in the area.
BEACHES: Hattie Sherwood
Beach and Dodge County Memorial Park are two great options to dig your toes into the sand during those beautiful summer months on the lake. Cool off with a fresh dip into the water or walk on the sand.
SURFS UP: There’s no feeling like throwing the rope and surfing, and you can do just that on Big Green Lake. Grab a life jacket and your board and jump in the water. Wake surfing is a low-impact sport where you surf the wake of a boat while traveling 10 miles per hour in Wisconsin’s deepest and cleanest lake.
Green Lake is truly a four-season destination with events, activities, and outdoor fun to be had all year long. From bundling up in December to swimsuit season in July, we have a few ideas to help get you outdoors in all kinds of weather.
GOLF: Fall is one of the best
times to hit the links in the area! If you’re planning a golf getaway, Green Lake is the ideal place to start – we’re within an hour of nationally ranked public courses, and our four local courses range from par 3s for beginners to tournament level. Choose from 99 holes of challenging resortstyle golf. Unlimited play is offered upon availability. AMISH COUNTRY TOUR: Experience Amish Country firsthand by visiting shops and roadside stands in the Green Lake area. These places provide a great chance to interact with a culture that otherwise keeps a distance from the outside world. Because the Amish don’t seek attention, you generally won’t find listings for their businesses – especially not online. See our detailed map on page 47 for driving directions. 22 | 2022 green lake wisconsin official map + travel guide
SKATING: Located in the
south side of downtown Green Lake at Deacon Mills Park wharf is a popular spot for families and couples to come ice skate beneath downtown’s twinkling holiday lights. Includes a warming hut that houses plenty of free skates to borrow if you don’t already have a pair. ICE FISH: Anglers will be happy to learn ice fishing is popular here in the winter months. Although the spot you select will depend upon the type of fish you’re hoping to snag, we recommend scheduling a guided service to enjoy hooking that trophy fish in a comfortable heated ice shed with all the best equipment.

CHOOSE WHERE TO
THE GOLF COURSES OF LAWSONIA Lawsonia Links - ranked #87 Top 100 Courses in the US by Golf Magazine 2020-21, #66 Top 200 Classic Golf Courses in the US by Golfweek 2021, and consistently ranked as one of the very best in the state, Lawsonia is a must-play golf destination in Wisconsin. Located on the beautiful historic grounds of Green Lake Conference Center, Lawsonia offers 36 championship holes with two wonderfully unique 18 hole courses on the same property. The Links has a wide-open Scottish look and feel with rolling fairways featuring large fairway bunkers and huge elevated greens. The newly renovated Woodlands course is carved out of the thick forest that borders Green Lake, featuring tree-lined fairways along with severe elevation drops. The full-service bar and restaurant, Langford's Pub, is open daily throughout the golf season for breakfast, lunch, and their famous Friday Night Fish Fry. The clubhouse has men's and women's golf apparel and offers club fitting, bag storage, and personal or group lessons. On-site lodging and stay and play packages are also available.
MASCOUTIN GOLF CLUB Located just south of Berlin, Larry Packard carved out a magnificent 18-hole golf course through century-old trees in 1975. Giant undulating greens test your putting, sand traps galore wait to swallow an errant shot, and water hazards come into play on the final four holes. With bent-grass fairways and superb conditioning, the layout appeals to golfers of all abilities. In 1999, Mascoutin opened a new mystifying nine, designed by Rick Jacobson. The “Blue” nine features waste bunkering, elevation changes, forced natural hazard carries, river views, water hazards, and a “cliff” hole, making it a spectacular golfing experience. With a championship practice facility and 27 holes of championship golf, Mascoutin is “Wisconsin’s Best Kept Secret,” located six miles north of Green Lake. Come on out to Mascoutin and play where the championships are played!
TUSCUMBIA COUNTRY CLUB Tuscumbia is the oldest golf course in Wisconsin, bearing the slogan “Where History Lingers on Every Green.” Tuscumbia’s public 18-hole, 6,301-yard, par-71 layout is one of the best manicured courses in the state. Tuscumbia provides a park-like setting of majestic evergreens and century-old hardwoods, thick rough, tight fairways, and a rolling landscape. A log clubhouse with a large rustic fireplace and charming décor accommodates outing arrangements, dinner parties, banquets, and meetings. Other amenities include motorized carts, 9th-hole snack shop, driving range, practice green, fully stocked pro shop, club repairs, and storage and locker rooms. Tuscumbia promises to be one of the most memorable rounds you’ll ever play, whether you’re a novice or seasoned professional.
SONDALLES WHITELAKE GOLF This challenging 18-hole golf course is carved out of ancient glacier-formed land with an unusual western style apparent by exquisite, natural landscaping and hilltop scenic views of rolling terrain, vast woods, sloped greens, free-roaming peacocks, and spring-fed ponds. The par-72 layout sprawls over 200+ acres of natural paradise and encompasses two separate circles of nine holes, which provide significant elevation changes. The course’s newest nine has more than a dozen pond barriers, traps, trees, and wooded areas. The 15th hole has a trap-protected dogleg left, fairway pond, and a tree-buried green. Clubhouse amenities include a pro shop, practice green, bar, and sandwich shop. Just minutes from Green Lake, between Montello and Princeton, off Highway 23. 34 | 2022 green lake wisconsin official map + travel guide

Green Lake is a place where winter is embraced, and there’s a running list of reasons why you will want to bundle up to appreciate the season. An ice rink on the southern end of downtown is a popular spot for families and couples to skate beneath the twinkling lights. The rink has plenty of free skates to borrow, and there’s a warming shelter for a comfortable break. The area features over 150 miles of interconnected, well-groomed snowmobiling trails, where it’s not uncommon to encoun-

ter deer, wild turkey, bald eagles, and other wonderful birds. You may even be lucky enough to spot a snowy owl. Plan your winter trip by snowmobile; trails will lead you to the front door of several lodging and dining options in Green Lake. If you prefer to keep your boots on the ground, head to Zobel Park for an exhilarating sled, tube, or snowboard ride down the hill. We are fortunate to have winters that are long enough to enjoy. You can explore your favorite outdoor attractions with a pair of
MORE THAN A BANK snowshoes, cross-country skis, fattire bike, or a lower-impact walk in the winter landscape.
We’re Growin’ Wisconsin
Green Lake is one of the best places to see ice boating in action each winter. These machines are capable of hitting top speeds anywhere between 90 and 140 miles per hour. Once the ice covers the lake, you can move farther out for deeper-water ice fishing and search for lake trout, musky, walleye, panfish, cisco, white bass, and catfish.

PROUD HISTORY Now a museum, the Little White Schoolhouse, birthplace of the first Republican Party and site of their meeting, is a simple frame schoolhouse built in 1853. In the Little White Schoolhouse, a decision made by a small group of Ripon citizens changed the course of our nation’s history. The downtown is bustling with historic buildings, a residential area dotted with eye-catching Victorian houses, the first Marcus Theatre founded, and the oldest historical society in Wisconsin.
GASTRO EXPERIENCE Make sure to check out the Mascoutin Valley Craft Beverage Trail while in the area. Along the trail, you’ll experience the diversity of craft wines, beers, ciders, meads, and spirits. These businesses create a variety of products using quality local ingredients combined with the love of offering sustainable and enjoyable craft beverages. Head on over to mascoutinvalleycraftbeveragetrail.com for more info. SIGNATURE EVENTS There’s no shortage of activity in Ripon. Friday Night Summer Concert Series fills the Village Green with a wide range of musical genres and is free to the public. Septemberfest celebrates the fall season and has something for everyone, including live entertainment throughout the day. And we can’t forget about the beloved Dickens of a Christmas, which comes alive in December and features people acting out different scenes in the windows of shops alongside countless other holiday activities throughout the weekend.
COLLEGE TOWN The city features Ripon College, a nationally recognized, private liberal arts and sciences school. Don’t let the small size fool you; the college is always lively and bursting at the seams with brilliant students, masterful performances, renowned speakers, and so much more.
OUTDOOR PARADISE Princeton is a destination for many outdoor adventures, including canoeing and kayaking along the Fox River, heading out to explore the backroads on eight planned tours offering biking experiences for all types of riders, and launching your boat at the Princeton Dam. SHOP THE STREET With many crafters and artisans in residence, Princeton merchants pride themselves on offering unique, one-of-a-kind, or handcrafted goods. The Shops on Water Street offers small-town shopping with some of the finest urban flair goods in the state. Delight in the atmosphere as you stroll through shops restored to their 1800s origin, log-built from native pines, or repurposed in their own unique style.
ANTIQUE ABUNDANCE You never know what you might find browsing Green Lake area’s favorite spots for antiques. It’s easy to spend a full day surrounding yourself with
nostalgia as you peruse the many malls and shops bursting with exquisite artifacts from days gone by. A “new to you” find at the antique store can be one of the best mementos of the trip.

WORLD FAMOUS Make sure to visit Princeton’s famous Flea Market, held outdoors from April to October. It’s the largest of its kind in the state and full of treasures homemade, antiqued, and new. Browse through hundreds of vendor goodies; you’ll find the perfect thing you’ve been looking for and the thing you never knew you needed until then.
AMISH COUNTRY First founded in 1977, the Amish community near Dalton and Kingston is one of the younger Amish communities in the state, but has quickly become the largest Amish settlement in Wisconsin. You’ll find no shortage of Amish buggies to wave at as you travel between bakeries, greenhouses, furniture stores, cheese shops, and more. ENDLESS OUTDOORS Acres upon acres of lakes to drop in a fishing line on Little Green Lake and birding, hiking, and exploring the Grand River Marsh Wildlife Area are just the start to a great outdoor adventure in the Markesan area. STEP BACK IN TIME Offering its guests the opportunity to step back in time, the Grand River Valley Museum & Train Depot is the spot to head to. Collecting, archiving, and sharing the area’s more-than-150-year history since 1991, the museum houses the largest and, unarguably, the best collection of the area artifacts in four separate buildings, covering more than 12,000 square feet.
BERLIN BEAT THE HEAT The Berlin Aquatic Center is the prime location to cool off on a hot summer day. Complete with a giant waterslide, zero-depth entry areas, and a fun kiddie area, it makes a great destination for people of all ages to visit and spend a fun-filled afternoon. They also host multiple specialty programs, including Early Bird Swim Monday, Adult Lunch Laps, and Sunset Swims.
GET LOST If you plan to take a jaunt down the Fox River by boat, canoe, or kayak or go fishing from the shores, Berlin is a great place to relax on the water. Reconnect with nature in 1 of 10 city parks or head to the Mascoutin Valley Trail, which eventually leads you into Ripon. SELF-GUIDED TOURS Planning a visit to Berlin is like taking a trip back in time with a modern flair in the air. While visiting, immerse yourself in the self-guided walking tour of the many historic homes and buildings located around the city. SUPPORT LOCAL The Berlin Farmers & Artists Market creates a social opportunity for residents and visitors to gather and interact. Held in Nathan Strong Park on Tuesdays from June until September, this market showcases local farmers, artists, artisans, businesses, and live music.
