We hope you will find the Discover Real Baraboo guide a useful tool to start your exploration of this special part of the United States. It won’t take you long to see this is a great place to visit or call home! The Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce
Baraboo is located in the Driftless Region of the Upper Midwest. Its location, a scenic paradise that’s close – but not too close – to metropolitan areas, gives visitors and residents alike access to a wealth of opportunities. From its natural gifts to the people who call it home, Baraboo doesn’t disappoint. Founded in the early 19th century, Baraboo is named for an 18th century French Canadian fur trader named Francois Barbeau. In 1846, Baraboo became the Sauk County seat, and a few years later, home to the Ringling family, whose brothers grew up and formed a world-renowned circus. The Ringling family chose to make Baraboo its winter headquarters for many years, and the show’s birthplace would later become home to a state historical site, Circus World. In addition, Baraboo is the home of the International Clown Hall of Fame, the Aldo Leopold Foundation and the International Crane Foundation. If you love the outdoors, Baraboo has you (un)covered! Located next to Wisconsin’s most popular state park – Devil’s Lake – and a few short minutes from Mirror Lake State Park, there are plenty of astonishing sights and recreational opportunities nearby. For example, you can take a trip down the Baraboo River, once the backbone of local industry, now one of the longest stretches of open river in the country. In addition to historic sites and natural wonders, Baraboo plays host to fairs, markets, festivals, concerts, performances and art tours – bringing fun to the community throughout the year. The Baraboo Area
Late in the 19th century, Baraboo became the headquarters of several circuses, including the Ringling Bros. Circus, and thus became known as Circus City. Baraboo is now home to Circus World, the former headquarters and winter home of the Ringling Bros. Circus. It’s the largest facility preserving circus artifacts and ephemera in the United States. The completely restored Al. Ringling Theatre, an active landmark in the city, opened its doors in November 1915 and has been operating ever since. Several Ringling homes still exist, including the Al. Ringling Mansion, located downtown.

Theories abound as to how the Baraboo River was named, but the earliest clue is that a French Canadian fur trader named Barbeau operated a winter trading post at its mouth in the mid-19th century.
The nearby Baraboo Hills are designated one of the “Last Great Places” by the Nature Conservancy because of the unique rocks, plants and animals found there. Devil’s Lake State Park, Wisconsin’s largest state park, contains vast tracts of peaks and valleys created by glacial movement. Just a short drive outside of Baraboo will lead to several picturesque communities. North Freedom, located just eight miles west of Baraboo, is home to the MidContinent Railway Museum, a unique attraction featuring rides on restored train engines. North Freedom is also the home of Baraboo River Canoe & Kayak Rentals, where you can rent your gear and trek down the Baraboo River for a day of fun.

Driving a little farther west, between Baraboo and Reedsburg, brings travelers to the village of Rock Springs. The Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue & Education Center provides a safe and comfortable home for abused, neglected and unwanted big cats. In addition to caring for the animals, they educate visitors about them. Merrimac features the free Colsac III ferry, a vessel that’s both a functional transport and a tourist attraction. It’s the state’s only free ferry, as well as the only ferry left on the state trunk highway network. It takes vehicles across Lake Wisconsin as weather allows, and those waiting for a ride have been known to enjoy cones from the ice cream stand near the ferry dock!

Baraboo River Paddling
The Baraboo River at most times is a slow, shallow river with areas of shallow rapids. Under normal conditions the Baraboo is a fairly easy river to paddle by canoe or kayak. If the water is too low, you can find yourself getting hung up often and needing to get out and walk around shallows, but at other times, when the water levels are higher, the river can be quite swift and should not be paddled by anyone other than experienced paddlers. At all times,
it is important to be alert to changing conditions and aware that the current can be quite strong in places. There are sections of Class I rapids in the Baraboo city limits area. Most land along the river is privately owned. Respect private property rights along the banks. No camping is allowed along the river, but public and private campgrounds are available nearby.

Baraboo's Big Top Parade 8th Annual Big Top Parade & Circus Celebration
We encourage all you buckaroos to discover the Big Top Parade, which features nearly 100 circus and community entries. The parade begins at 11 a.m., traveling around the historic downtown courthouse square. Before and after the parade, the Baraboo area and our downtown will be filled with family-friendly events. “This parade and all the events surrounding it get bigger and better every year,” says Darren Hornby, executive director of the Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce.
“The entire community will embrace the Western theme, and y’all will have a good ol’ time!” “Baraboo will bring the West to the Midwest, circus-style,” says Nanci Caflisch, event co-chair and board member of the Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the Big Top Parade & Circus Celebration. “Young and old will be enthralled by the circus wagons, marching bands, horses and other animals and, of course, the cavalcade of clowns! If you miss it, you’ll be fit to be tied!”

will appear in the parade, as will clubs, community groups and circus fans from across the region. Scott O’Donnell, executive director of Circus World, notes that the Ringlings and other circus impresarios brought exotic, but family-friendly entertainment to rural America before the electronic age took hold, when much of the nation was frontier country. “In 1884, five brothers from Baraboo, the Ringlings, put together the most stupendous circus ever known to man,” O’Donnell says. “This was a time before the internet, motion pictures and television, even a time before reliable radio. How did people across America see these magnificent creatures, daredevil feats and performers from around the globe? It was only through the advent of the American circus.” Now, you can’t throw a Western-themed party without including some kinfolk.
O’Donnell notes that the Ringlings’ first cousins, the Gollmars, had a magnificent circus of their own, and their first cousins, the Moellers, created the whimsical, majestic circus wagons that were part of the Ringling circus and circuses all across America. “The Ringling brothers and their extended family really encapsulated the American dream, and through them, changed American history and American culture forever,” O’Donnell says. That culture lives today in the annual Big Top Parade. But that’s just the beginning of the fun. After catching the parade, all you cowpokes are invited to stay downtown for a heapin’ helpin’ of hospitality. Enjoy live entertainment at the Circus Palooza station, which will feature live music and food, or cruise down “Eat Street” and taste delectable treats from food vendors. Then top off your afternoon by heading down to Baraboo’s treasured Circus World to catch a big top performance. Finally, if you aren’t plumb tuckered out, you can unwind with country music concert that evening at the Al. Ringling Theatre, a palatial playhouse built by the eldest Ringling brother. This complete day’s package will leave you amazed by everything this rootin’, tootin’, little town offers. Yee-haw!
In 2016, the Big Top Parade & Circus Celebration was recognized among the Top 100 Events in North America by the American Bus Association. The event annually attracts upwards of 25,000 visitors. For more information about Baraboo’s Big Top Parade & Circus Celebration, contact the Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce at 608-356-8333. Look for updates at bigtopparade.com and follow the Big Top Parade on Facebook and Instagram. Remember, this here’s an annual hootenanny. Y’all come back now, ya hear?

Lakes & Waterways Devil's Lake has both warm- and cold-water fisheries. Each year, the DNR stocks the lake with brown trout. Browns are taken mainly on small minnows or spinners off the steeply dropping east and west shores. You will also find walleye, which are stocked, and northern pike. Easy access fishing is available along the south shore of the lake, where it is possible to fish just off the sidewalk. Please note that powerboats are not allowed on Devil’s Lake. Fish at Devil’s Lake include trout, common carp, northern pike, white sucker, bullhead, catfish, white bass, rock bass, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, green sunfish, pumpkinseed, bluegill, crappie, walleye, yellow perch, Iowa darter and

Mirror Lake is a 139-acre lake with a maximum depth of 19 feet. The lake has three public boat landings. To use the landing within the park you will need a Wisconsin State Park sticker. Mirror Lake is entirely no wake, so boaters should be aware of the regulations specific to this lake. This is not a lake for jet skis, but is a premier lake for kayaks and canoes. Fish include panfish, largemouth bass, northern pike and walleye. The lake’s water clarity is low. dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/mirrorlake 608-254-2333 Lake Wisconsin is a 7,197-acre lake with a maximum depth of 24 feet. Gallus Slough is a 20-acre body of water located just north of and across Highways 78 and 113 from Lake Wisconsin. The slough is connected to the lake by a narrow waterway that runs under Highway 78 at Moon Valley. During the open-water season, access to Gallus Slough by boat is from this waterway and the boat landing at Moon Valley. During ice fishing season, the best access is from Highway 113, which runs north to Devil’s Lake State Park. Park your vehicle along Highway 113 and pull your sled and equipment through the farm field 1/4 mile to the water. Most bluegills run 7 to 9 inches and the crappies are in the 10 to 12 inch range. dnr.wi.gov/lakes | 608-635-8122 The Baraboo River flows about 100 miles from its headwaters, near Hillsboro, to its confluence with the Wisconsin River, south of Portage. Access can be obtained at numerous locations, including Rock
Springs, North Freedom at Fireman’s Park, Giese Park on Hatchery Rd, several parks within the City of Baraboo and at the Glenville Landing. Reports of crappies, bluegills and channel catfish are common. Northern pike and walleye are being caught throughout the river. Smallmouth bass fishing along the rapids through the City of Baraboo is a regular occurrence. dnr.wi.gov | 608-635-8122
Wisconsin River is the longest river in Wisconsin, at over 430 miles, and is known for outstanding walleye fishing. The Wisconsin River begins near Lac Vieux Desert and flows southwest into the Mississippi River near Prairie du Chien. The spring walleye run on the Wisconsin River is legendary, and you can catch over 50 in a day, with great catches coming below dams. When the water warms after the spring runs, you can catch a large number of smallmouth bass. The rocky banks of the Wisconsin River provide ideal habitat for smallmouth bass. You can also catch big muskies after they spawn in May below the dam, and the fishing can continue to be good through fall. The backwaters of the Wisconsin River are popular spots to catch northern pike, crappie and bluegills. dnr.wi.gov | 608-635-8122
