Welcome to the

Baraboo Area

“Discover Real – Baraboo” is the expression that we use to invite you into our community. With this concept and invitation, you are welcomed and encouraged to explore everything that the Baraboo area has to offer. Whether you are into the outdoors and love natural resources, prefer to shop and dine, would like to dig in and explore our community’s love and relationship with the circus or would just like to get out of the everyday hustle and bustle to explore our lifestyle, Baraboo has something for everyone young, old and everywhere in between.

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Discover Real - Baraboo. Whether visiting for the first time or making the Baraboo area your new home, the purpose of this publication is to welcome, educate and highlight our exciting and breathtaking community!

Baraboo is located in the Driftless Region of the Upper Midwest. Our location, in this amazing geographical phenomenon, coupled with our proximity to larger metropolitan areas, gives us a wealth of opportunities to offer you. From our natural gifts to the people who call it home, Baraboo will not disappoint. Founded in the early 19th century, Baraboo is said to be tied to an 18th century French Canadian fur trader named Francois Barbeau. In 1846, Baraboo became the Sauk County seat and a few years later became the home to the Ringling family, whose brothers grew up and formed the Ringling Bros. Circus. The Ringling family chose to use Baraboo as their winter headquarters for a number of years, and with this rich history, Baraboo later became the home to Circus World. In addition, Baraboo is the home of the International Clown Hall of Fame, the Aldo Leopold Foundation and the International Crane Foundation. If being outdoors is your scene, Baraboo has you (un)covered! Located next to Wisconsin’s most popular state park – Devil’s Lake – and a few short minutes from Mirror Lake State Park, you can take advantage of these immaculately maintained and respected gems of our community. Or you may choose to take a trip down the Baraboo River, once the backbone of industry, now one of the longest stretches of open river in the county. In addition to the outdoor pursuits, Baraboo hosts many fairs, night markets, festivals, concerts, performances and art tours – bringing fun and frivolity to the community over the year. You will see a glimpse of our annual events in this publication under “Calendar of Events,” and for a full dynamic schedule of events visit baraboo.com. Treasuring the past and looking to the future is clearly evident with our vibrant and engaged schools, a local University of Wisconsin campus and healthy and diverse array of industries and businesses. We hope that you will find the Discover Real - Baraboo a useful tool to start your exploration of the Baraboo area. All in all, the Baraboo area is a great place to visit or make your new home!

Discover

The Baraboo Area There are dozens of theories as to how the Baraboo River was named, but the earliest known reference is that a French Canadian fur trader operated a winter trading post at its mouth in the mid-19th century. The complete story for this fur trader can be found in the book A Man Called Baraboo, by local author M. Richard Tully.

The Al. Ringling Theatre, an active landmark in the city, opened its doors in November 1915 and has been operating ever since. Several Ringling homes still exist, including the Al. Ringling Mansion, located downtown.

Photograph by Barbara Wilson

In the 19th century, Baraboo became the headquarters of several circuses, including the Ringling Bros. Circus, and thus became known as Circus City. Baraboo is now home to Circus World, the former headquarters and winter home of the Ringling Bros. Circus. It’s the largest facility preserving circus artifacts and ephemera in the United States.

The nearby Baraboo Hills are designated one of the “Last Great Places” by the Nature Conservancy because of the unique rocks, plants and animals. Devil’s Lake State Park, Wisconsin’s largest state park, contains large areas of the Baraboo Hills. The hills near Baraboo were created by glacial action. Just a short drive outside of Baraboo will lead to several picturesque communities, which add much to the Baraboo area. North Freedom, located just eight miles west of Baraboo, is home to the MidContinent Railway Museum, a unique attraction to the area featuring rides on restored operating steam engines and an extensive museum. North Freedom is also the home of Baraboo River Canoe & Kayak Rentals, where you can rent your gear and

trek down the Baraboo River for a day of fun. Driving a little farther west, between Baraboo and Reedsburg, brings travelers to the Village of Rock Springs. The Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue and Education Center provides a safe place and comfortable home for abused, neglected and unwanted big cats. In addition to caring for the animals, they educate visitors about the animals. Merrimac features the free Merrimac Ferry, a functional regional crossing and a tourist attraction. It’s the state’s only free ferry, as well as the only ferry left on the state trunk highway network. The ferry is close to the head of Lake Wisconsin as well as regional recreation areas, including Devil’s Lake and the Wisconsin Dells.

Some give away gift bags to the first people in the store each day. It’s entirely up to the shop owners (who set their own hours) to decide on what their promotions are…but all make it worth it! Navigating The

Baraboo River THE BARABOO RIVER and its Watershed Sources include: UW–Extension Environmental Resources Center and Skillet Creek Media

Baraboo River Paddling

The Baraboo River at most times is a slow, shallow river with areas of shallow rapids. Under normal conditions the Baraboo is a fairly easy river to paddle by canoe or kayak. If the water is too low, you can find yourself getting hung up often and needing to get out and walk around shallows, but at other times, when the water levels are higher, the river can be quite swift and should not be paddled by anyone other than experienced paddlers. At all times, it is important to be

alert to changing conditions and aware that the current can be quite strong in places. There are sections of Class I rapids in the Baraboo city limits area. Most land along the river is privately owned. Respect private property rights along the banks. No camping is allowed along the river, but public and private campgrounds are available nearby.

“In 1884, five brothers from Baraboo, the Ringlings, put together the most stupendous circus ever known to man,” explained Scott O’Donnell, executive director of Circus World. “This was a time before the internet, motion pictures and television, even a time before reliable radio. How did people across America see these magnificent creatures, daredevil feats and performers from around the globe? It was only through the advent of the American circus, including and especially Baraboo’s very own Ringling Bros. Circus. Also from Baraboo were the Ringlings’ first cousins, the Gollmars, who had a magnificent circus of their own, and their first cousins, the Moellers, who created the whimsical, majestic circus wagons that were part of the Ringling circus and circuses all across America. The Ringling brothers and their extended family really encapsulated the American dream, and through them, changed American history and American culture forever.”

Then top off your afternoon by heading down to Baraboo’s treasured Circus World to catch a big top performance. In 2016, the Big Top Parade & Circus Celebration was recognized among the Top 100 Events in North America by the American Bus Association. Recognition on

this list highlights the parade for its value to tour groups and individual travelers from around the world. In 2017 and 2018, the event brought in more than 30,000 spectators and parade enthusiasts! Mirror Lake is entirely no wake, so boaters should be aware of the regulations specific to this lake. This is not a lake for jet skis, but is a premier lake for kayaks and canoes. Fish include panfish, largemouth bass, northern pike and walleye. The lake’s water clarity is low. mirrorlakewisconsin.com | 608-254-2333

You will also find walleye, which are stocked, and northern pike. Easy access fishing is available along the south shore of the lake, where it is possible to fish just off the sidewalk. Please note that powerboats are not allowed on Devil’s Lake. Fish at Devil’s Lake include trout, common carp, northern pike, white sucker, bullhead, catfish, white bass, rock bass, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, green sunfish, pumpkinseed, bluegill, crappie, walleye, yellow perch, Iowa darter and johnny darter (the trout and carp are not native). devilslakewisconsin.com | 608-356-8301 you should use caution. Slough is a 20-acre body of water located just north of and across Highways 78 and 113 from Lake Wisconsin. The slough is connected to the lake by a narrow waterway that runs under Highway 78 at Moon Valley. During the open-water season, access to Gallus Slough by boat is from this waterway and the boat landing at Moon Valley. During ice fishing season, the best access is from Highway 113, which runs north to Devil’s Lake State Park. Park your vehicle along Highway 113 and pull your sled and equipment through the farm field 1/4 mile to the water. There’s always a good path to the water even if there’s snow on the ground. Anglers walking and pulling sleds and ATV traffic keep the walking easy. Gallus

The nice thing about Gallus Slough is that it’s a good early ice fishing spot and continues to produce fish throughout the ice season. The slough is no deeper than five feet at its deepest spot and is quite weedy, with milfoil being the dominant weed. Bluegills are the most common species of fish that you’ll catch, with crappies a close second. Most bluegills run 7–9 inches and the crappies are in the 10– 12 inch range. The weeds provide cover and help the slough’s food chain flourish. dnr.wi.gov/lakes | 608-635-8122 The Baraboo River flows about 100 miles from its headwaters, near Hillsboro, Explore Baraboo Guide FOR SUBMISSION.indd 1 262018 | Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce BaRABOO.com

The Wisconsin River is the longest river in Wisconsin, at over 430 miles, and is known for outstanding walleye fishing. The Wisconsin River begins near Lac

Vieux Desert and flows southwest into the Mississippi River near Prairie du Chien. The spring walleye run on the Wisconsin River is legendary, and you can catch over 50 in a day, with great catches coming below dams. When the water warms after the spring runs, you can catch a large number of smallmouth bass. The rocky banks of the Wisconsin River provide ideal habitat for smallmouth bass.
