Spring has definitely sprung and there is no better place to enjoy this time of year than in Thurmont! Every year, spring generates new energy to the earth as Mother Nature delivers brilliant shades of spring and summer to our delightful town; and there is no other place to enjoy the outdoors than in a scenic small town surrounded by the Catoctin Mountains.

We are best known for some of the finest hiking, with panoramic views in the state of Maryland and are home to a national park, Catoctin Mountain Park, which houses the Presidential Retreat Camp David along with Cunningham Falls State Park. Both parks host all levels of hiking, but what most don’t know is Cunningham Falls State Park has a beautiful lake that reopens Memorial Day weekend for swimming, boating, and just relaxing. Thurmont also has many other attractions that reopen every year in the Spring that deliver a multitude of colors and delightful tastes as our local orchards begin to open for the 2024 season. If you are looking to savor local wines, we have that too. Our quaint town is bookended by some of the best wineries and a distillery in the State of Maryland with a microbrewery right in the heart of our town. While visiting, make sure you take a walk down our historic Main Street and don’t miss out on a peaceful walk, or bicycle ride on the Thurmont Trolley Trail. You will see nature at

its finest while walking along the trail from East Main Street to the Thurmont Regional Library and points beyond. You may want to take a break at the library to take a breath and relax among the trees on their deck surrounded by a nature trail.

For those who want explore history, a must stop is the Catoctin Furnace Historical Village for a step back in time for a microcosm history for the role the Furnace played in the Industrial Revolution in America. I could go on and on about all the wonderful attractions in Thurmont, but after you read all the exciting adventures inside these pages, you will want to come and experience Thurmont for yourself! We welcome you to visit our community and explore our charming small town that is set in the middle of a picturesque landscape. Once you visit us you will understand why we are truly known as the “Gateway To The Mountains!”

Our scenic community is nestled along the National Scenic Byway which is designated as The Journey Through Hallowed Ground, and is also located along the Maryland Scenic Byway. Thurmont is a prestigious Designated Maryland Main Street Community along with an accreditation from the National Main Street under the Trust for Preservation, and is also positioned in Maryland’s Hertiage Area known as “The Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area.”

WELCOME TO EMMITSBURG

Nestled in the most northern part of Fredrick County, sometimes Emmitsburg gets lost in the conversation of being in Maryland, and I guess for good reason. From the town square you travel a mile to the west and north and you will see the sign, Welcome to Pennsylvania. So that is one of the characteristics that makes our small town so special.

Emmitsburg is full of history and tourist attractions that can occupy a day or two for the whole family. Our downtown area is full of family-owned restaurants and eateries that will satisfy your appetite and your sweet tooth. If it is fast food, you are looking for you can stroll to our Silo Hill shopping area for that quick meal on the go. While in the downtown area you can take a tour following our Wayside Exhibits that will illustrate our history and take you back through the 1800’s and the creation of our beautiful town. You can enjoy our parks with a game of basketball, tennis or pickleball, while your dog can enjoy a run in our dog park.

A short walk to the south will put you at the Seton Shrine. This is a must see visit and learn of the life of the first American-born saint, Elizabeth Ann Seton. You will find one of most

beautiful Basilica’s in the world, along with a museum and gift shop.

Emmitsburg is sometimes referred to as a “college town” as we are home to Mount Saint Mary’s University. While the main campus is just outside the town limits, construction is underway to bring a satellite facility to the town. This will house the new medical programs that the university will offer in the upcoming year. If your timing is right, you can catch a Division I sports event which are well attended by community members. Sitting high above the campus is another must see. The Grotto of our Lady of Lourdes, a national shrine devoted to the Blessed Mother Mary. Take a tour and visit the gift shop to learn more about the area’s religious heritage.

While we are a small community, we are full of attractions and great food. We are a 10-minute drive to historic Gettysburg to the north, as well as Catoctin Mountain Park to the south. Both Baltimore and Washington D.C. are sixty miles away and a relaxing drive if you are looking to get a task of the big city adventures.

Thurmont is open year round for great outdoor recreation, but this time of year brings an explanation mark to all things Summer! For those who love the water and mountains, you won’t want to miss the opening of Cunningham Falls State Park Lake. For those looking for a juicy experience, you will definitely want to indulge your taste buds in one our many orchards, wineries, a distillery, and breweries. Thurmont has something for everyone, so what are you waiting for?

Catoctin Mountain Orchard

Catoctin Mountain Orchard has reopened for their 2024 season! For spring items your will find Gala, Crimson Crisp, Evercrisp, Pink Lady, Granny Smith, & Fuji apples, along with other all spring vegetables in season. You will also find market favorites such sweet apple cider, dried apples, apple cider vinegar, apple butter, local honey and eggs. No sugar apple sauce including honeycrisp, golden and fuji with cinnamon, evergold, and their new blueberry apple sauce is available. The bakery is open everyday and trust us, you will know that as soon as you walk through the front door. You will find a large selection of daily baked pies that include apple, cherry, country cinnamon apple, peach, honeycrisp apple, blueberry, four berry, apple caramel walnut, peach blueberry, blackberry, apple crumb, peach crumb, cherry crumb, and apple dumplings. Oh, and don’t forget those homemade apple cider donuts before leaving.

Chestnut Hills Farm & Market

Nestled in the Catoctin Mountains and close to Camp David, Chestnut Hill Farm and Market LLC is a sixth-generation family run farm that has recently diversified to bring fresh produce, “From Our Fields, to Your Table.” With over 20 acres devoted to fruit and vegetable produce, they produce over 70 different varieties of produce once summer kicks on.

Chestnut Hills Farm & Market is definitely worth the scenic drive-up Route 77 to visit their fully stocked market with homegrown healthy foods, local cheese, meat, eggs, and baked goods. You can also order your favorites online and have them ready for pick up. When you visit their market, you will meet family and friends working there, and in addition to all the fresh fruit and produce, other locally grown items include beef, pork, and local jarred items. You can always spot Chestnut Hills quickly at the Thurmont Main Street Farmers Market as their picture-perfect large display is always chocked full of their homegrown juicy fruits and fresh vegetables.

Pryor’s Orchard

Since 1905, Pryor’s Orchard has been a family operation for three generations. Slowly, they transformed from a dairy farm to orchards with homegrown fruits, vegetables, and produce, specializing in cherries, plums, apricots, pears, peaches, blueberries, apples, and nectarines. Over the years many upgrades have been made to better the quality of their fruits to accommodate customers. Pryor’s Orchard is located in the Catoctin Mountains away from the hustle and bustle, offering very quiet and peaceful surroundings with many shade trees surrounding the market place. Pryor’s Market still exists in the original barn built with wooden pin construction dating back to 1940. Nearly all of their farm labor is performed by owners and managers with great part time employees in the summer and fall, all of who are friends and relatives. Take the road less traveled and you will find Pryor’s Orchard a few minutes off of Route 15. Pryors Orchard opens mid-June for their 2024 season.

Thurmont is probably best known for our 5 star-studded outdoor recreation which includes parks, the best cycling in Maryland, and three historic covered bridges. What I bet you didn’t know is that Thurmont has three award-winning wineries in our back yard! Hence Wineyards! Our wineyards not only produce and serve some of the best wines in the state of Maryland, but also each location offers aa ambiance with scenic views that will have you capturing many photos while enjoying the fruits of their labor. I did forget to mention that one of these wineries, Springfield Manor, is not only a winery, but also a distillery and a brewery! The only one of its kind in the State of Maryland.

LINKS BRIDGE VINEYARD

Links Bridge Vineyard is tucked away on a quiet rural road in Thurmont, and sits alongside the Monocacy River creating serenity while enjoying your wine. Link Bridges Vineyard has a personal touch from owners Joan Cartier and Bob Thompson, so you when you visit them, they will be your hosts. They do have another host that will more than likely ask you to throw the ball, and that is their dog Lucy, the vineyard ambassador! At Links Bridge Vineyard, the grapes are grown by Joan and Bob, then processed into a variety of their rich red and white selections. If you are looking for a tranquil setting and great wine, you will enjoy Links Bridge Vineyard. Links Bridge is open year round, but they increase their hours of operation and are in full swing now.

SPRINGFIELD MANOR

At Springfield Manor, you will find a large variety of their award-winning Wines that are processed and bottled on premise. The Distillery for their unbelievable spirits is a Farm to Bottle concept, producing Maryland’s award-winning Rye Whiskey, Bourbon, Rum, Vodka, Grappa, Brandy, and World Class Lavender Gin. You can enjoy your beverage choices in a beautifully renovated barn that offers a hip and historic vibe when sipping inside with several tasting bars. The outdoor patio seating is only perfect for spring and summer. You can also order a small plated food selections while enjoying your wine, spirits, or hand-crafted beer. Springfield Manor has opened is now open for the 2024 season! Ten award winning varietals and blends are produced on-site.

UNCLE DIRTY’S BREW WORKS

If you are looking for a local brewery, “Uncle Dirty’s Brew Works” is open all year round, and is the first brewery in Thurmont.

Stop by Uncle Dirty’s for a variety of hand-crafted, small batch creative beers with new ones each week.

Josh, aka, Uncle Dirty, describes Uncle Dirty’s Brew Works like this, “We are a small nano brewery with a big brewery attitude. We strive to brew quality beer with flavors that everyone can enjoy.” You will want to also try the best BBQ around –Uncle Dirty’s Brew Works is located at Bollinger’s Restaurant.

CATOCTIN BREEZE VINEYARD

Catoctin Breeze is a family-owned vineyard located in the northeastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Formed by ancient Appalachian soil and perpetually cool winds, and produced by hand from field to bottle, our wines are as accessible as they are expressive. Our winemaking is a labor of love. Love for the land, for the wonders of nature and for the wine – the magic drink that brings people together and makes an ordinary moment special,” share founder, Wojciech Leon Fizyta.

Also, for those of you that are interested in historic covered bridges, Catoctin Breeze Vineyard is just around the corner from the iconic Roddy Road Covered Bridge. Catoctin Breeze is open year-round, but is now operating their regular hours.

CUNNINGHAM FALLS STATE PARK LAKE

Not only is Cunningham Falls State Park home to the highest cascading waterfall in the state of Maryland, but this state park is also home to the scenic Hunting Creek Lake that has all the amenities of the beach! What is the main amenity? Sand! What a view and a great place to relax and swim on a warm sunny day. I bet you didn’t know that the most beautiful lake nestled at the bottom of the beautiful Catoctin Mountains also has boating available on the calm picturesque lake right next door to the mountainous lake beachfront. While spending a day or week at the lake at Cunningham Falls State Park, be sure to visit the Scales and Tales Aviary that is home to 21 non releasable animals including raptors and reptiles, both native and nonnative. You will also find the majestic bald eagle at the aviary. The lake area and aviary open Memorial Day weekend.

Hunting Creek Lake: Swimming is permitted Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend in three designated areas.

Boating: A boat ramp for launching private watercraft onto Hunting Creek Lake is available for a small service charge. Only electric motors are permitted. No gasoline motors.

Camping: The William Houck Area Campground opens at the beginning of April and closes at the end of October annually. It is equipped with 33 electric sites and 106 basic sites. Additionally, there are 8 camper cabins located throughout the campground. The Manor Area has 10 electric sites, 21 basic sites and no cabins.

Scales and Tales Aviary: Cunningham Falls State Park Aviary is home to 21 non releasable animals including raptors and reptiles, both native and nonnative. The Aviary also houses the majestic bald eagle. (Memorial Day-Labor Day)

WILDLIFE PRESERVE

Catoctin Wildlife Preserve invites guests to “Get Close” to exotic animals again as it opens for its 58th season of conservation, education and entertainment!

Temple of the Jaguar – One look at our male Jaguar and you’ll instantly feel his regal presence. Now Magia’s home will resemble a Mayan Temple so he may be revered by all. The sleek black cat may recline on raised steps or cool in a pool on hot summer days. But be wary – if you don’t see him, he might be sneaking closer to surprise you at the glass viewing windows!

Macaque Metroplex – From awkward youngsters to wise elders, this large family of almost thirty Ochreata Macaques is a fan favorite. The exhibit area has expanded with the troop size and now includes glass front observation areas, expanded guest seating, and a child-friendly space for front row viewing. Catoctin Wildlife Preserve is the only place in the United States to see a group of this size, and proudly received recognition from the Zoological Association of America (ZAA) for our work in propagating this endangered primate.

Asian Otter Cove – The playful group of slick furred, water loving creatures will enjoy an island home surrounded by a large swimming pool. Visitors may observe the

otters from an elevated path around the Cove. Otter Cove is near the popular Koi Feeding Pond, making the area an aquatic highlight of the preserve. This exhibit was made possible by a generous donation from the Andersson Family.

Himalayan Tahr Mountain – Tons of stacked boulders form the basis for a fortyfoot tall towering playground for these large wild goats. Himalayan populations are declining because of hunting and loss of its natural habitat, so the Preserve is thrilled to exhibit this near-threatened species.

Drive-through Safari (limited days and times) – Grab your camera and drive your vehicle through paddocks of wandering bison, zebra, ostrich, deer, antelope, camels and more! Two years of expert labor, hundreds of hours of bulldozer and backhoe use, and countless tons of soil and gravel were needed to add driving roads, curved landscaping, and features for the safety of the animals and enjoyment of our guests.

The Preserve is located 20 miles south of Gettysburg and 12 miles north of Frederick on US 15, Thurmont. Special days are designated throughout the year that offer reduced admission rates for local residents, military families, scouts, and service groups. Summer is the perfect time to visit Catoctin Furnace. Spread out a blanket and enjoy a picnic on the furnace lawn. Explore the historic stone furnace and ironmaster’s house ruins. Take a hike on one of the self-guided trails. Or spend the day having fun at the Maryland Iron Festival.

GO FOR A HIKE

You can walk through history on one of Catoctin Furnace’s trails. The grand opening of the new Iron Trail is Friday, April 26 when Catoctin Furnace’s new EV charging station will also be unveiled. The Iron Trail extends one half mile from the Cunningham Falls State Park Manor Area lower parking lot off Route 15 to the 19th century iron furnace. It is a gently sloping groomed trail that crosses a historic iron pedestrian bridge. A word to the wise: the trail includes a steep run of steps up to a bridge over Route 15. Along the way informative waysides tell the story of ironmaking in 19th century Catoctin Furnace.

A shorter, level walk can be taken on the African American Cemetery Interpretive Trail. Connecting the historic iron furnace to the 19th century enslaved ironworkers’ cemetery, you will learn the story of the African American workers who produced iron for cannonballs, stoves, pots, kettles, and other products that contributed to the development of our country.

HISTORIC BUILDINGS

Catoctin Furnace has many historically preserved structures, including

the iron furnace; the ironmaster’s mansion ruins; Fraley’s Store, which supplied food and sundries to Catoctin Furnace’s workers; the Collier’s log cabin and kitchen/pollinator gardens, and the Museum of the Ironworker, housed in a restored stone worker’s house. Call ahead at 240-288-7396 to reserve a tour of the buildings. Remember, many of the houses in Catoctin Furnace are private homes which are not open to the public.

MUSEUM OF THE IRONWORKER

Open Wednesday through Sunday from May to September, the museum gives visitors a glimpse into the lives and work of Catoctin Furnace’s ironworkers. The museum is housed inside a historic stone ironworker’s cottage and displays the tools and products that were produced in Catoctin Furnace. One of the highlights of the museum is a pair of forensic facial reconstructions of two enslaved ironworkers who were buried in the African American cemetery in the 1800s.

SPEND THE NIGHT IN 1820

The Forgeman’s House is an original 19th century stone ironworker’s

cottage that underwent a historic restoration in 2022 and is now an overnight rental. Furnished as it would have been in the 1800s, the Forgeman’s House sleeps six and features a stone gas fireplace in the cozy living room. There is even a secret hatch that reveals some of the home’s secrets. The Forgeman’s House was recently selected for the 2024 Maryland Historical Trust prestigious historic preservation outstanding stewardship award for the quality of the restoration and preservation.

LONGER DAYS, LONGER HOURS

While much of Catoctin Furnace can be explored outside, during long summer days the Museum of the Ironworker has extended hours. Between June and August, it is open from 10 am to 4 pm, Wednesday through Sunday. Always check the website at catoctinfurnace.org for the latest opening times and information. You may schedule a tour of Fraley’s Store and the Collier’s House log cabin by calling 240-2887396. All three of Catoctin Furnace’s historic buildings are open during special events.

JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION

Wednesday, June 19 6:30pm

Join us for a commemorative wreath-laying in memory of Catoctin Furnace’s enslaved ironworkers. There will be a reading of the names of Catoctin Furnace’s enslaved African American workers and a screening of Machele Jones’ short film “Ancestry: The Connection to Catoctin.” Jones is a descendant of enslaved ironworkers, herself. She discovered her connection to Catoctin Furnace through the Smithsonian’s and Catoctin Furnace Historical Society’s genealogical research.

Have you ever thought about a getaway to spend a relaxing week, or weekend in the mountains? You know, that daydreaming cloud above your head where you picture just what you think that escape would like? Well, look no further because we have your tranquil retreat right here. If you have never visited, or heard of Ole Mink Farm Recreational Resort, you are in for a treat for anyone looking to get away whether it be by yourself, a romantic getaway, or with the family! We sat down with Irons family who have made Ole Mink Farm guests a part of their family for decades, and to learn more about this special hideaway in the Catoctin Mountains in Thurmont, Maryland.

WHAT YEAR WAS OLE MINK FARM FOUNDED AND BY WHO?

Ole Mink Farm Campground was established in 1964 by Pat and Gordon Irons. We are celebrating our 60th year of hosting families making lasting memories, one campfire at a time.

WAS IT ORIGINALLY CALLED OLE MINK FARM?

Pat and Gordon Irons enjoyed camping with their family, and they often visited the Catoctin Mountain region. When they were in search of a getaway for their family, they naturally looked for properties in this area. This property was a working mink farm in 1930’s, closing in the early 1940’s when the depression hit. Many Thurmont residents worked on the farm, so the mink name was kept for direction purposes. If someone were to stop in Thurmont and ask where the mink farm was, locals knew exactly where that was.

WHAT CAME FIRST, THE CAMPING OR THE CABINS?

The campground officially opened in July 1964 with 10 camp sites. The first cabin opened in 1970.

MANY CAMPING

SITES

DO YOU HAVE AND DO THEY ALL HAVE HOOKUPS AND ARE FOR CAMPERS AND RV’S?

We currently have 100 sites that are rented on a seasonal basis only. Because we try to maintain the integrity of the mountain, we minimize cutting trees to make or widen campsites. This means This means that every camp site is unique in layout and size.

HOW MANY LUXURY CABINS DO YOU HAVE AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THE AMENITIES:

We have 10 luxury cabins, ranging in size from 1-4 bedrooms. Each luxury cabin has the comforts of home: Heat/AC, at least one bathroom, fully-furnished kitchen, and living room with fireplace. We recently added a hot-tub to one of our one-bedroom cabins.

In addition to luxury cabins, there are also three log cabinettes which are enhanced camping cabins. The cabinettes have a bunkroom as well as a kitchenette, which has a propane stovetop, compact fridge and a microwave. While there is not a bathroom in the cabinettes, our main bathhouse is about 25 yards away. The bathhouse is open year-round, is heated and clean!

All of our cabins have a picnic table and an outside fire ring with furniture. The cabinettes have a pavilion to give extra space with protection from the elements. Other cabin amenities include Cable TV, and of course Wi-Fi.

ARE THEY DOG FRIENDLY?

We understand that pets are part of the family for many people, while others may experience pet allergies. We offer designated pet-friendly cabins to welcome our guests with 4-legged friends. Dogs even have their own playground, bathing station, custom treats, and doggie ice cream! Pets and people alike are spoiled at Ole Mink Farm!

WHAT YEAR DID YOU ADD ‘RECREATION RESORT’ TO OLE MINK FARM? WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO ADD THAT TO THE NAME?

We added Recreation Resort as our trade name in 1996. We did so to clarify our business as having cabins and campsites.

WHAT TYPE OF ACTIVITIES CAN ONE EXPECT TO FIND WHILE CAMPING OR STAYING IN ONE OF YOUR CABINS?

Our swimming pool is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend. Our other amenities include a playground, horseshoes, and a multipurpose court with basketball and pickleball. There is also a fishing pond and native trout stream to fish. Our game room has video games, a pool table, air hockey, and crane machine as well as a lending library with books and movies.

In addition to our resort amenities, we offer family-fun planned activities during our summer season: Pig Roast, Bubble Weekends, Candy BINGO, Cornhole, Olympic Competitions, and even a Christmas Light Display with Santa during our Christmas Celebration at Labor Day!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE EVENT AT OLE MINK?

It’s hard to pick just one! Our Fourth of July weekend is a big event that features a Pig Roast, a Flag Retirement Ceremony, a Horseshoe or Corn Hole Tournament and an Olympic game competition. Labor Day weekend is also a crowd favorite as we celebrate Christmas

with many festive activities, including a huge light display, Christmas parade, face painting, small vendor market and even a visit from Santa!

LET’S SAY THAT NO ONE KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT OLE MINK FARM RECREATION RESORT, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE RESORT?

Ole Mink Farm is a family owned and operated resort, where we host getaways for couples and families. BIRDWATCHING & PHOTOGRAPHY: TWO HOBBIES THAT GO HAND-IN-HAND

When I was young, if someone mentioned ‘bird watching’ I immediately pictured some geeky, older person wearing a safari hat, mosquito netting, khaki clothing, using binoculars, and tiptoeing through the woods. The funny thing is I realized what a misconception that was, and I eventually became THAT person later in life! Well, almost. My clothing is quite different, and I use a camera instead of binoculars.

Living in the Catoctin Mountains in Maryland, my whole world opened- up when I bought a new camera and started photographing birds. Both are great hobbies and fun ways to connect with nature, enjoy the outdoors, sneak in some exercise, and even snap a good photo now and then. It’s the thrill of the hunt for me that makes birding exciting! The quieter and more patient you are, the closer you listen for their calls and movements, the more birds you’ll see and be able to identify.

Please don’t be intimidated by the scientific Latin names of birds, such as Turdus migratorius. That’s cool if you do know the fancy words but knowing that it’s an American Robin is just fine. There are apps for searching for bird names and sounds. One of my ‘go to’ birding apps is Merlin Bird ID. And a convenient quick reference book is, Birds of Maryland & Delaware Field Guide by Stan Tekiela.

Some migratory birds, such as Hummingbirds and RoseBreasted Grosbeaks, are so in tune with the seasons that they leave and return to the same area almost the exact calendar week each year. Of course, some birds in our area don’t fly south at all, they’re here year- round.

Since I live in the woods, I see a wide variety of birds, more so than someone living in town, mostly due to their habitat which consists of trees, shrubs, rocks, and streams.

It’s never too late to start a new hobby. With birdwatching you don’t need the latest and greatest gear. Get yourself an inexpensive pair of binoculars or use the camera that you already own. The next time you go for a walk, look up and take notice of the birds in your neighborhood. Or maybe participate in a local Backyard Bird count. Overtime, you’ll begin to differentiate between male/female, bird calls, nesting habits, etc. I’ll end with one of my favorite quotes: “No matter what yesterday was like, birds always start the new day with a song.”

CONTINUES TO EXPAND

Spring is upon us again! With temperatures rising after a long winter, it makes us want to go out and enjoy the outdoors. The Thurmont area is a beautiful place to do that, with hiking trails in the Catoctin Mountains, the beautiful parks all over town, and of course the Trolley Trail!

If you have not been on the trail since the town extended it to Thurmont Boulevard – check it out. For many in town, it is now possible to take your bike or walk the trail to Weis for groceries without even getting in your car. We need to look at connecting the trail to the Orchard Hills sidewalk system that currently ends at the entrance to the shopping center on Tippin Dr. That would give residents of Orchard Hills an “off-street” connection to the town, the library, and other businesses. There was great excitement about the $109,000 grant we received for the trail extension to Blue Mountain Road. This proposed extension would have been the next step in connecting Thurmont to the Catoctin Furnace historical site. As I explained in the March 2023 article, this extension would need approval by property owners along the way so we could build the trail in the Potomac Edison power line easement. Some property owners were interested in collaborating with us and saw the benefit the trail would bring to our community, unfortunately many property owners were not. Since we could not reach an agreement with all property owners necessary, we had to turn the grant back to MDOT. The grant funds will now be put to use in another part of the state to provide safe walking and biking trails for another community.

The organization is now looking forward to extensions north. There are three developments in the northern portion of town that are in various stages of approval. All three of these developments will provide a trail system that will connect to the existing trail off of Boundary Avenue all the way to Eyler Park. The connection to Eyler Park was one of our visions for the Trolley Trail and will allow children and families to reach the sports fields and the new playground equipment at Eyler Park on an off-street trail.

We have a beautiful town and the trail network that is gradually being developed is a wonderful way to get out and enjoy it. With the warm spring days ahead, go take a walk, run, or bike ride on the Trolley Trail.

PRESIDENT TRAINOR WILL RETIRE, JOYCE READY TO GO

Mount St. Mary’s President Timothy Trainor announced, at the end of last school year, that he will retire in June 2024. Dr. Trainor has been president for eight years, since June 2016, and for many at the Mount his tenure went way too quickly and seems far too short. However, Dr. Jerry (Gerald) Joyce has been hired to take the office of president in June, and the future appears as bright as the recent past with Dr. Trainor.

Dr. Trainor took on the responsibilities of president during some turbulent times for the Mount and headed into the tough years of COVID-19 and its effects and after-effects on higher education. Still President Trainor has led MSMU through a period of growth in quality and quantity of programs.

During Dr. Trainers years as president, the Mount has achieved a great deal.

• Enrollment has grown by over 10%.

• New majors have been developed, such as entrepreneurship, cybersecurity, and neuroscience.

• A host of building projects and renovations have been completed: on the Academic Center, the Grotto, most residence halls, and the seminary, as well as new welcome center and an activities center. Underway are expansions of the COAD Science building and the athletic facilities.

• In partnership with Frederick Health, Emmitsburg Urgent Care has been built on campus and is open to the community.

• In partnership with the Daughters of Charity, a new Graduate School of Health Professions will open this year at St. Joseph’s House on the Daughter’s Emmitsburg facilities.

• NCAA Division I athletic teams have been expanded from 16 to 24, and the university moved to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), resulting in greater competition and exposure for athletes and coaches and experiential learning opportunities for students through ESPN Broadcasting. President Trainor has cultivated a positive culture of change and a can-do spirit at the Mount. His departure, June 30, 2024, will be a sad day. Fortunately, July 1 will lift our spirits as Dr. Joyce arrives to continue Dr. Trainor’s good work.

DR. JERRY (GERALD) JOYCE

Dr. Joyce has worked, for over 30 years, in various roles at DeSales University (near Allentown, PA). He is currently the executive vice president and has served as interim president. He has also worked as the vice president of student life and the dean of enrollment. He has had a variety of other roles at DeSales, working himself through the ranks and taking on tough jobs as needed.

Joyce’s previous roles have included serving as vice president for student life and dean of enrollment management. He has implemented innovative student recruitment strategies, developed character-building programs, and established international education initiatives. As an adjunct instructor, he taught courses on education philosophy, ethics, leadership and decision-making.

Dr. Joyce will move to Emmitsburg with his wife and five children, and we hope they settle in for a good long stay.

Nestled in the heart of historic Emmitsburg, the Emmitsburg Antique Mall offers a fascinating opportunity to travel back in time. If you’re fascinated by historical artifacts, vintage designs, or unique items that can’t be found in modern stores, be prepared to spend hours browsing over 120 vendor booths in search of the perfect treasure.

The mall has been open since 1988 when a group of businessmen had a vision to repurpose a shoe factory into an antique store. Now it’s a major destination for customers seeking a wide-variety of items including furniture, glassware, vases, lamps, clocks, collectibles, primitives and much more.

The moment visitors step into the mall, they are greeted with collections that leave them feeling nostalgic and full of memories, which is a large reason why the mall is so beloved. Whether hunting for a specific piece or browsing for inspiration, customers of all ages are delighted to find something special to take home. “We’re a family-friendly business with vendors who have been with us for decades, and there’s a long waitlist for an open booth, which is a testament to our success,” explains Susanne Gaver, one of the mall managers. “Many of our vendors refresh their inventory regularly to feature new or seasonal items, which is a huge draw for our customers. Children tend to love booths that feature collectibles like comics, toy cars, figurines, trading cards and old fashioned candy.” The Emmitsburg Antique Mall also welcomes well-behaved dogs on a leash for a perfect family outing.

Today the antique mall draws collectors and thrifters from all over the nation who hope to add to their favorite collection or score a deal on a show-stopping conversational piece. Other shoppers hope to catch a glimpse of the resident ghost that has been playing pranks for years. If you ask the mall staff members about these ghostly encounters, they’re happy to share stories that were captured on the mall’s security cameras, which mostly happen at night. “If we find something broken or out of place, we immediately check the cameras. Sometimes the ghost doesn’t like a certain item and throws it repeatedly,” explains Suzanne.

Mall manager Michael Reynolds explains that the ghost sent a figurine of Superman flying through the air recently, which shows the entity might have a sense of humor, too. “Since we’re so close to route 15 and the Gettysburg battlefield, paranormal enthusiasts seek us out while they’re in the area,” said Suzanne.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year if you love to golf, and I bet you didn’t know that Thurmont is home to a premiere golf course, Maple Run. This course was purchased in 2022 by Mr. Jeff Barber, and the course has undergone a complete renovation since his acquisition. The immense rehab that has taken place at Maple Run will definitely heighten the golfing experience for all who play. In addition to all of the green’s renovations, Maple Run has also added some pretty cool two wheeled golf bikes. The interior of the clubhouse was rehabbed and now sports a golf retail center and cold beverages

(alcohol and non-alcohol). The course reflects a classic layout with the front nine hosting a relatively open layout with small drastically sloped greens. The back nine scenically takes golfers through the woods for a much tighter test, but entertains larger and easier greens. Maple Run Golf Course is a destination golf course and was the winner for Best Golf Course in the 2023 Best of the Best from The Frederick News-Post. If you have never played Maple Run, it’s time see why this course ranks number one as Frederick County’s premiere golf course!
