Dear Residents,

Investing in Mamaroneck: Your Tax Dollars at Work

Nancy Seligson, Town Supervisor

Winter 2017 Newsletter

The Town of Mamaroneck made significant investments to repair and improve our infrastructure last year. One of the most important investments was the purchase of the VFW Building on Boston Post Road next to Trader Joe’s. After many years of partnership with David Potts VFW Post 1156, and leasing the building for use as the Senior Center, recreation space and alternate meeting space, the Town can now plan for improvements in programming and for the building and know that the future use of the building is secure. We’re happy to share the building with the Veterans who will continue to have full use of the building. There’s more information about this investment in this newsletter.

We’re making significant investments in Mamaroneck to provide better service to you. We completely renovated our police headquarters, installing a new, state-of-the-art dispatch and technology system to get you help when you need it. We repaved more than 3 miles of Town roads - the second most ever - and replaced 2000 square feet of sidewalks and 2200 linear feet of new curbs. We also replaced the roof of the Town Center, which both kept the building functional and helped make it more environmentally friendly. Keep an eye out this year as we repair the Fire House on Weaver Street and renovate the Town Center parking lot with green infrastructure and new signage. In partnership with neighboring municipalities, we’ll also complete our required evaluation of our sewer system this summer, and start any needed repairs.

Congratulations to our Regeneron Semifinalist! Mamaroneck High School Senior Andrew Katz - pictured here with MHS Original Science Research Teacher, Guido Garbarino - is one of 300 students selected nationwide as a 2017 Regeneron Semifinalist for his secure “internet of things” home automation device. Formerly named “Intel”, the Regeneron ScienceTalent Search is the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science contest.

These kinds of investments are crucial to maintaining our quality of life, and helping to ensure that Mamaroneck remains a vibrant and welcoming community. Investments in our future work best when we’re financially responsible, and when we’re protecting our environment. I’m pleased to report that we’ve made great strides on both fronts since my last update to you, and received two impressive honors. Since last year, our Town’s credit rating was upgraded by Moody’s Investor Services to Aaa, the highest rating possible. This allows the Town to borrow funds at the most favorable rates. In fact, the Town was able to borrow $8.9 million in 20 year bonds at an interest rate of 1.96%. Moody’s reported that “the upgrade to Aaa reflects strong cash and reserve levels, a sizeable and affluent tax base, a manageable debt burden and strong management.” Only 10% to 15% of all municipalities in the country have this credit rating. I’m also pleased to report that the Town earned a certification as a Climate Smart Community from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation last fall. The Town is only the ninth community in the State to earn such an honor. The Town is committed to reducing energy use in government buildings, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and saving taxpayers’ money. Thank you to summer Intern, Zoe Kaldor, who completed the difficult application process. Inside, please find more information on what’s going on around Town as we start another great year! Nancy Seligson Town Supervisor The Town of Mamaroneck is committed to fostering welcoming communities and an equitable, diverse, and inclusive society.
