While paradise may be in the eye of the beholder, we tend to imagine it as a destination. Often the place we picture is one where waves lap gently on a sandy beach, boats race across a shimmering lake and we spend time with family and friends near the water. Due to its 66 miles of shoreline and growing Lakefront District, the Town of Little Elm on Lake Lewisville has become a popular destination for paradise-seekers. The community is located just 35 miles from downtown Dallas and sits adjacent to the booming employment hubs of Frisco and Plano. As such, it’s drawing both visitors and new residents from across the region. Little Elm was incorporated in 1966 and remained a rural lakeside hamlet for the next 35 years. A “best-kept secret” known to Lake Lewisville boaters and fishers, the town didn’t draw much attention from daycationers or house hunters. All that changed with the explosive growth of Dallas’ northern suburbs over the
last two decades. Little Elm’s population has grown over 900 percent — to 38,194 residents — in that time. Yet the community’s welcoming small-town attitude endures. “Little Elm is a special place,” Matt Mueller, Town Manager, says. “It’s a unique mix of a small town and a suburban community. We place a high emphasis on our quality of life. We’re a very safe community, we’ve got great schools, and we’ve got one of the best park systems in the state.” Financial website NerdWallet agrees, ranking Little Elm second on its national list of Best Small Cities for Families in 2017. The town is also the third-fastestgrowing Dallas suburb. In particular, the sandy shores of Little Elm’s beach host many weekend escapes and summer getaways. Mueller believes the area’s unique amenities offer a nice respite from the bustling, hustling lifestyle familiar to residents of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. In fact, Little Elm Beach is the largest in North Texas. It’s

also a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts where visitors can enjoy biking, swimming, boating, fishing, wakeboarding, paddleboarding, kayaking and more.
“It’s a unique mix of a small town and a suburban community” If playing volleyball or building sandcastles on a beautiful day is more your speed, this lakeside attraction features an extra perk: smooth, fine-quality sand with a smaller grain, which the town orders specially. Its vigilant park maintenance program also helps ensure a cleaner environment for beach activities than most natural lakeside areas. The town even celebrates Christmas at the Beach, an annual family-oriented event that runs the entire month of December. The Lakefront District offers an array of restaurants and
taverns where people can also enjoy Little Elm’s hospitality. With many convenient and fun dining options, the area can accommodate family members gathering for a great meal, coworkers escaping for a lakeside meeting or friends swapping stories about the biggest catch (or best wave) of the day over a cold margarita. There’s even a tip-based shuttle service, Efrogs, that allows visitors to hop between many of the district’s parks, restaurants and attractions with ease. Future plans include a new community park honoring first responders, an entertainment venue, a boutique hotel and a wedding venue. Mueller believes that all of this growth is good for the town and great for visitors, whether they’re tourists or prospective new residents. He’s also confident that Little Elm will continue to take its progress in stride. “We have high expectations as far as the innovation and growth,” Mueller says, “but we don’t think that means we have to lose our identity in the process.”

D-FW is rich in resources for those seeking to escape the weekly grind, but how and where we do so is often determined by what helps us relax. Some people seek active fun and adventure. Others just want to commune with nature, a good book or good company. Whatever your pleasure, Little Elm’s outdoor scene is ripe with play and leisure opportunities. The town’s park system alone offers a multitude of activities and options. Little Elm Park is the jewel of the Lakefront District. It’s known for the sandy Little Elm Beach, a lakeside swimming area popular with locals and visitors. The park offers many other amenities as well, such as a natural outdoor amphitheater, sand volleyball courts, a large playground, covered pavilions

that can be reserved for parties or get-togethers, barbeque grills and picnic areas, and the Lakefront Grill snack bar. DFW Surf offers kayak and bike rentals, paddleboarding, yoga classes (in and out of the water), and summer surf camp. The primitive campground also serves as

a lovely lakeside setting for overnight tent camping. Cottonwood Park features a wooded lakeside hiking trail, playground equipment, sports fields and the long-established Cottonwood Creek Marina. The marina features boat storage and rentals, a ship store and a few
lakeside picnic areas. It’s been a regular destination for boaters and fishers in the area for some time, serving both the Little Elm community and its guests. Little Elm is also home to the Nautical Boat Club, which makes it easy and affordable to rent, lease or buy a boat. Membership provides unlimited access to a fleet of boats for more than 300 days a year. Complimentary water toys are included with each outing. “The marina was here before the rapid growth hit,” says Town Manager Matt Mueller. “It has a little bit more of a small-town feel to it, and you get the sense that

you’re just getting away from it all when you’re there.” In addition to its miles of trails and innovative play areas, McCord Park on the east side of Little Elm features a brand-new 3000-square-foot splash pad. It includes a tropical forest with squirting flowers, along with an assortment of bubblers and spray jets. The park also sports “a nicesized play structure that kids can climb up and a water-filled slide,” as Mueller describes it. “You’ll definitely be soaking wet.” Parents who prefer not to get wet can also watch the activity from the Hula Hut or Towers Taphouse located on either side of the park. Or the whole family can visit Hydrous next door, which features an inflatable obstacle course open to all ages. Hydrous Wake Park opened for business in the Lakefront
District in 2013, and it’s a great place to get both wet and wild in Little Elm. Wakeboarding is a relatively young sport, but one that’s growing more popular in the D-FW area, especially the cable wakeboarding version Hydrous offers. For the uninitiated, traditional wakeboarding is best described as a cross between surfing and waterskiing, mainly because the rider balances on a single flat shortboard while being pulled behind a boat with a tether. Some wakeboarders also freestyle on the waves generated as the boat moves forward in the water. Hydrous serves the local wakeboarding community as well as visitors to the area from across the U.S. Hydrous owner Chad Lacerte also works with athletes whose skills naturally transfer to wakeboarding. “Kiteboarders,
surfers, windsurfers, snowboarders from Colorado — we have all kinds,” he says. According to Lacerte, both novices and experienced surfers can easily pick up cable wakeboarding, in which both boat and tether are replaced by a series of cables strung across a body of water. In addition to being fun and challenging, cable wakeboarding allows new riders to easily learn the sport. Using the cable structure makes coaching easier, too. “We’re able to work with you one-on-one and walk you through how you need to be standing, what you need to be doing,” Lacerte says. “If you do fall, you can get right back on very quickly.” The actual standup riding time is also greater for beginners using the cable rather than learning on the open lake, he explains, which allows new riders to get through their training faster. But one of the best things about cable wakeboarding is that friends and family can ride the waves together. “It’s a smaller body of water, which allows for multiple riders,” Lacerte explains. Since no
one has to drive the boat, no one has to wait to be picked up for the next ride, and everyone gets more surfing time. Whatever your weekend or summer escape plan, Little Elm provides a range of options and attractions for the relaxer in you.

Whether your idea of escape is finding the perfect airconditioned retreat with great food and hospitality or the right spot to have a beer and catch the game with your fellow sports fans, Little Elm has you covered. The town’s bar and restaurant scene is heating up as new concepts join old favorites to offer a wealth of choices and cuisines. Little Elm’s Lakefront District is the center of it all. That’s where you can find everything from burgers, chicken, barbecue, breakfast and home cooking to Italian, Indian, Mexican and Cajun fare. Some visitors even drive into Little Elm just to get their Polynesian/Hawaiian Tex-Mex fix at the Hula Hut, one of the area’s main attractions. The original Hula Hut opened on Lake Austin 25 years ago and quickly became an Austin icon.
Little Elm boasts the first and only non-Austin Hula Hut location. Owner Duffy Oyster says he knew right away that the town and Lake Lewisville would be a great fit for his concept of aloha, one in which pu pu platters and enchiladas share the same menu. “We’d looked at expanding and were planning to do a place down in Houston, but when this site came up, I put all my attention towards that,” he explains. “Because I thought it was a great site, and it’s turned out to be a really great area.” Hula Hut’s fame long stretches beyond the Texas capital, largely due to visitors and UT-Austin alums spreading the good word. Moreover, the Little Elm location duplicates many features of the original. The Hut’s tropical decor and funky tiki culture has migrated north intact, along with
the original restaurant’s most prominent feature — a long porch that juts out over the water, offering lovely views of the lake and Oyster’s whimsical set pieces. “It’s a fun place. It’s casual,” he says. “We have a giant shark and a volcano.” The restaurant also boasts one other noteworthy amenity. Its event space can accommodate 400 guests and can be rented
for parties, meetings, family gatherings and wedding rehearsal dinners. It’s also a feature unique to the Little Elm location. The Lakefront District has also become a go-to destination for DFW beer lovers. Little Elm Crafthouse is a craft beer bar that serves flights, pints and growlers. Its rotating cast of beers on tap is serious business, with many selections curated from some

of the best local and regional breweries. While the Crafthouse does not serve food, visitors are welcome to bring their own. Towers Tap House offers a full bar and food menu, as well as great views of the action at the Hydrous Wake Park next door. Diners can sip a craft brew while watching daring wakeboarders catch a nice wave (or wipe out). This spot also offers surf-themed cocktails such as the Cable Park Punch, Shred Ready Eddy and the good Old Fashion Air. Just down the street at 3 Flights Up Taps and Tacos, diners can mix and match their craft beers with an equally inventive selection of tacos, such as the chicken shawarma, fried cauliflower, shrimp po’ boy, Caribbean beef barbacoa or fish and chips. Margarita Hut is another popular spot for thirsty Lakefront District visitors. Their tasty wine-based thirst-quenchers are made to travel. Margarita Hut offers to-go margaritas served in sizes as large as a gallon, with intriguing names and flavors such as the Lemon-tini, Blue Hawaiian
and Hypnotic. The hybrid beerrita, which combines the colorful frozen treat with a nice malt beverage, is another fine choice. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop also opened its first Little Elm location on the lakefront last June, and General Manager Matt Gosdin says that the town’s laid-back style is welcoming to both new restaurants and the new visitors they bring. You might not even notice the local celebrity sitting at the next table. “It’s a very tightknit community,” he notes. “The mayor comes in here all the time.” The Efrog shuttle service also plays a big role in making visitors feel at home. It offers tip-based rides from attractions like Little Elm Beach or Cottonwood Marina, to any bar or restaurant in the district, making it easy to take a break from all that fun and sun. Little Elm’s booming bar and restaurant scene reflects the affection that visitors and residents have for this lakeside town, as well as the priority they place on good living and quality leisure time with family and friends.

Marshall holds weekly SUP yoga classes on the lake, and Little Elm hosts yoga on the beach every Saturday during the warm weather months. “In the history of DFW Surf, working with the town of Little Elm has been the best
experience,” Marshall says, and his goal is to keep extolling the virtues of the lakeside lifestyle. To that end, he offers Surf Club memberships that provide regular access to equipment and unlimited surf, paddle and yoga classes for year-round training. Although his company’s quest to bring inland surf sports to North Texas began a decade
ago, Marshall’s case for the transformative power of life on the water still convinces. “The moment when you experience surfing or the feeling of gliding on a paddleboard into the sunset is the moment we wanted to share with others,” he says. “We’re determined to spread the love for the lake.”
Marshall originally operated the DFW Surf Shop at Pier 121 Marina on Lake Lewisville. He then moved his teaching and rental operations to the Surf Shack at Little Elm Beach. He says this new location is the perfect match thanks to Little Elm being “a small town with a beach vibe and literally the biggest public beach in North Texas.” “We’re now getting into biking and bike rentals,” Marshall adds, noting that the 2.6-mile Johnny Broyles Nature Trail along the lake is perfect for the company’s

Little Elm’s brand-new Flix Brewhouse is ticking a lot of entertainment boxes for residents and visitors to this growing area. A movie house with eight screens, all showing first-run features? Check. Waiter service, so you can skip the concession stand? Check. On-site restaurant? Check. Craft brewery with 40 beers on tap? Bonus! Flix began with a single theater in the Austin suburb of Round Rock in 2011, gradually expanding to small and mid-size cities across the West and Midwest. The Little Elm location — located at the intersection of FM 423 and King Road — is the chain’s first in North Texas, and only the fifth to open in the United States. Matt Silvers, Flix’s Senior Vice President of Real Estate and Brand Development, believes that his company has a distinct advantage over the array of other watch-and-dine movie houses so popular across the D-FW Metroplex. Because Flix initially sought to please Austin’s brewing community as much as its film lovers, the company’s “cinema brewery” concept was different from the start. Conceived as a brewery that shows films, Silvers says, rather
than just a theater serving better food and drinks, Flix’s beer is a point of pride. He counts “a pretty extensive list of hardware” among the company’s brewing accolades so far. In fact, its craft beers have gone on to win awards at the Great American Brewing Festival and other national and regional contests. “We look at beer brewing as a serious trade,” Silvers notes, elaborating that “each brewery is stand-alone inside each Flix Brewhouse, and we have experienced brewers who are serious about what they do.” The Little Elm location will host events such as cask nights, special beer dinners and brewery tours, and all Flix guests can sample a wide range of new and classic beer offerings in addition to site-brewed ales, wits, IPAs and stouts. The Little Elm Flix will cater to film lovers too, of course. The

Flix Pix program brings classic cinema back to the big screen for special events. Flix Fan Fest offerings honor beloved titles and cult favorites alike, pairing them with fun activities, souvenirs and themed menu items. Nevertheless, Silvers stresses that Flix’s main focus is hospitality, with every member of the theater’s staff dedicated to making the moviegoing experience all it can be. “When you buy a ticket to a movie, you’re not cared for to a great degree. You just go grab your seat — it is what it is,” he says. “Ours is a high-touch experience, and we do a lot of follow-through to ensure that you’re having a great time.” This attention to detail includes comfort as well, and the Little Elm location will be the first Flix Brewhouse to feature all-recliner seating. To ensure the best possible customer experience, Flix also has a few rules for those who buy a ticket. Minors must be
accompanied by an adult after 7 p.m., and guests at all shows are expected to arrive and take their seats on time. Seating begins 30 minutes before the start of the feature, and once the trailers are over, latecomers might not be granted entry. Talking or texting during the film can also have consequences. Flix’s “you talk, you text, you leave” policy is one some guests may find rather strict, but Silvers says each rule is only meant to assure everyone can enjoy the show. “People come to Flix because they’re serious about movies,” he says, adding that even with the age restrictions, “it’s still easy to come with your family or for kids to come with another responsible adult.” Flix does relax the rules for its daily baby-friendly screenings, when parents and their younger (or chattier) little ones can watch a film without the usual restrictions. Silvers feels that Flix is a great fit for Little Elm and its blended population of residents and lake visitors. “We want this to be an all-inclusive experience for families and the community,” he says. “We’re certainly excited to be here.”

Just another day in What’s it like to live in a place people escape to?
Little Elm’s location is a big factor in its growth, both as a daycation destination and a place to put down roots. It borders the hot job market cities of Plano and Frisco and sits between the Dallas North Tollway and I-35, providing commuters a straight shot to downtown Dallas. Little Elm has a taste for progress, too, and it’s common to encounter new municipal facilities, attractions, park projects and businesses with each visit. But the town’s story is best told through its neighborhoods. While many residential areas feature direct lake access or great water views, the variety of architectural styles and wide range of home prices attract just as many new residents as the town’s adjacency to Lewisville Lake. Brad Anderson, broker and owner at RE/MAX Lakefront real estate agency in Little Elm, says that prospective residents are often pleasantly surprised by what the town has to offer. “There’s such a variety here, so there’s no need to settle for what
you don’t want,” he explains. Little Elm is home to everything from quaint cottages and renovated boathouses to mid-century ranch homes and suburban enclaves, plus a growing inventory of homes that feature contemporary design or the latest smart technologies. “There’s plenty of choice here

for all income levels, and there’s something for everybody,” Anderson says. “If people want to be on the lake, we have that. If people want to be in a traditional subdivision, we have that. If people want a starter home, we have those. If people want to have an acre or two and spread out, we have that as well.”
Little Elm is the kind of place where farms and starter castles can peacefully coexist — and residents tend to like it that way. You may see horses roaming the pastureland next to a shiny new architectural gem, or notice cows grazing peacefully just down the road from a tidy lakeside subdivision. “Little Elm has more of a relaxed and casual feel,” according to Anderson. “We have to be true to who we are.” Town Manager Matt Mueller feels that Little Elm’s influx of new residents demonstrates that something positive is going on. “You can see the progression of different housing styles and different groups that have moved to town, and it’s exciting that through all the growth we’re now a community that truly has a housing option for everybody,” he says. “That’s true whether you’re renting your first apartment, buying your first home or buying a move-up home. And now, with some senior living coming in, Little Elm is also a place for folks to retire.”

In the Lakefront District along Eldorado Parkway, The Village at Lakefront is currently accommodating new residents seeking upscale, lake-view urban living options. In the near future, Palladium Phase II at Little Elm will be bringing additional high-end urban living and retail options, an entertainment venue and a boutique hotel, all within walking distance of each other. The northern part of Little Elm surrounding Highway 380 is also growing quickly. The Union Park master planned community and the Valencia on the Lake housing development are together bringing more than 4,750 new homes to the area. Many of these new neighborhoods and complexes feature amenities designed to foster community among residents and serve their entertainment needs. Union Park, for instance, has created themed areas such as The Porch and The Hub (an indoor-outdoor gathering spot), The Lawn (a green space for play and leisure), The Cove and The Kitchen (a
spacious outdoor pool area and snack bar with flat-screen televisions), and a food truck park for special events. Even with all the growth and prosperity Little Elm has experienced in recent years, Mueller says that the natural boundary Lewisville Lake provides will keep the town from becoming too crowded or overgrown. “You’re always going
to feel you have room to breathe here in Little Elm,” he says. “By the nature of our geography, we’ll never be able to get as dense as other suburbs in the area.” Mueller believes that people are moving to Little Elm for more than good value and easy lake access, however. “It’s just a wonderful place to live and raise a family,” he affirms. “It’s the kind of place where you
get to feel at home and meet your neighbors, and really feel like you’re part of a community.”
