Hanover is Age-Friendly!

Congratulations to the first 5 businesses in Hanover who took the initiative to become a recognized Age-Friendly Business. This initiative was developed to create awareness and better serve our aging population and support their potential needs. As part of Hanover’s Age-Friendly Business initiative, Hanover Foodland, Tenth Street Wealth, Saugeen Physiotherapy & Allied Health Centre, Hanover Public Library and the P&H Centre received recognition after completing the Age-Friendly Business Training and Self-Assessment Checklist, and having their application reviewed and approved by the Age-Friendly Advisory Committee.

If you have ideas to share or have anything you would like included in an upcoming Senior Star Newsletter, please speak to one of our committee members or contact us at recreation@hanover.ca

Spring Cleaning Made Simple
Spring is here, bringing warmer days, and the perfect opportunity to refresh your home while keeping safety in mind. Below are some simple yet effective tips to help you start your spring cleaning!
1. Tackle tasks in small segments
Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be done all at once. Break it down into smaller chunks over several days or weeks. This approach will keep things from feeling daunting and overwhelming.
2. Declutter to keep pathways clear
Clearing out unnecessary items will free up space and reduce stress. Decluttering your space can also lower the risk of tripping by removing obstacles from your doorways and walkways.
3. Leave the heavy lifting to others
To avoid injury, do not attempt to move heavy furniture or objects on your own, especially if you have mobility issues. Ask for help from family, friends, or hire professionals to safely move items.
4. Check your medicine cabinets
Check the expiration dates on all medications, including prescriptions and over-the-counter items. Properly dispose of expired medications and consider replenishing necessary items.
5. Don’t forget to test your detectors!

Ensure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order. Replace old batteries and check that they function correctly. If the detectors are out of reach, ask someone for help.
This guide provides general advice and should not replace professional consultation in legal, medicial, or other areas.

Fall Prevention Grey Bruce
Falls are the leading cause of unintentional injuries in Grey-Bruce. In 2021, the rate of emergency department visits (per 100,000 people) due to falls was the second highest among all Public Health Unit areas in Ontario, and was more than 1.5 times the provincial rate (PHO Snapshots). Falls can happen to anyone at any age – however, older adults are at the highest risk for injuries related to falls. Research has also shown that if you have a fall, you are twice as likely to fall again.
Along with injury, a fall can lead to chronic pain, a reduced quality of life, and cause someone to lose confidence and limit activities. The good news is that most falls are preventable. Here are some ways you can reduce your risk of falling:
• Have your vision checked regularly.
• Review your medications with your doctor or pharmacist annually, and take them as prescribed.
• Wear supportive, and anti-slip footwear with good treads.
• Make sure your home is safe by removing any tripping hazards and improving lighting.
• Maintain your strength and balance.
• Take your time, and don’t rush!
The Staying on Your Feet Guide is a comprehensive checklist created by local allied health professionals that helps individuals identify what puts them at risk for falls, how to prevent falls, and where to find local resources. Scan the QR code with your phone to access the guide. Information provided by Kaela Sales, Health Promoter with Grey Bruce Public Health
