Local Spotlight Local Spotlight: Christa Brazier is full of life. She is well-traveled, adventurous and has a heart of gold! For the past 10 years, Christa has been driving seniors around to beauty shops, doctors' appointments, lunch, and even the grocery store. If you ever had the pleasure of sitting down and talking to Christa, it does not take long to realize what a truly special and daring individual she is. She was born in Germany, but as a young child, her parents, grandmother, and siblings relocated to Los Angeles. Her father was a brilliant man and had many patents. Once they arrived in Los Angeles, her father joined the Navy and worked as a scientist. They settled into life in America, but her mother never really adapted to life in the U.S. Once Christa graduated from high school and was attending junior college, her mother thought it would be best if she

attended a year-long finishing school in Germany. With Christa's feisty personality and resourcefulness, she only lasted 5 months at the school. She was then hired as a secretary in Germany. She was not very interested in working, but she and her sister loved to enter dance contests at the local pub. If they won, (which they often did), they would receive a bottle of cognac. One evening while her and her sister were out, she met an American GI. He heard of an American girl who lived in Germany and wanted to meet her. Well, they met and have been together for 46 years! When they were first married, they had very little money. She says, "We built a foundation and proved that you can have fun with very little." Today, they are still having fun! Christa's passion for helping

others is evident; she even gave up her favorite car, a 19- year old Camaro, and bought a Toyota Avalon to better help the seniors she has been driving around. When she is not driving seniors around, she enjoys swimming and swims for 45 minutes, 3 times a day! She also loves to travel, and when she's able to do so she says, "It's almost like living in a fairytale."

Cooking Classes The Town of Danville no longer has a permanent cooking demonstration instructor. We are currently looking for volunteer instructors who have a special talent in cooking and would like to offer a demonstration in the future. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer instructor, please contact Senior Services coordinator, Jenn Overmoe (925) 314-3491.

Book Club & Movies Danville Senior Book Club JULY Book

The Power of Ducks by Robert Mahoney

Although not about the usual tales of heroic deeds during combat with an enemy, Robert G. Mahoney's, The Power of Ducks, may also be considered a "war story." This memoir chronicles the author's participation in a resistance organization called "GI's Against Fascism," created to generally improve sailors' living conditions. Emotionally stirring, this book narrates the group's desire for justice and willingness to sacrifice in pursuit of their goals, even up to the point of receiving mis-conduct discharges from the Navy.
