The Town of Danville and an estimated 100 volunteers from the community are joining forces to Lend-a-Hand in the community by helping older adults in need who reside in the Danville local area. The annual Lend-a-Hand Day event, now in its eighth year, provides senior citizens no-cost yard cleanup and minor home repairs. The event will take place on Saturday, April 30, from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Senior Sneakers Trips Explore, Learn and be Entertained!

The Town of Danville’s Senior Sneakers program is a great way to make new friends and get out and around the greater Bay Area.

There is always something new to see and learn. Either way, you will have a great time. Mail or drop off your registration form to the Danville Community Center, 420 Front St., Danville, CA 94526. The Community Center is conveniently located adjacent to the Danville Library. Danville resident registrations submitted prior to the first day of registration will be entered on Wednesday, February 16, at 8:30 a.m., and non-resident registrations will be processed on Thursday, February 17, at 8:30 a.m.

Phone registration will take place after the second day of registration.

To register over the phone with a Visa, Master Card or American Express, please contact the Danville Community Center at (925) 314-3400. Trips will meet at the Danville Park & Ride lot (Sycamore Valley Boulevard) unless otherwise noted. Please note! The times listed for each Senior Sneaker trip are approximate. Staff will mail out a detailed checklist approximately one week before the trip with the exact meeting time. If you register shortly before the day of the trip, please request this information from the registrar’s office (Community Center front desk) at the time of registration.

Registration Priority: Due to the high demand of the Town’s Senior Sneaker program, seniors will be limited to registering for two trips per month, or a total of four per issue of the Silver Streak newsletter. When choosing your trips, please number them in order of priority. See registration form for additional information.

ACTIVITY LEVELS

Each trip has an Activity Level. Plus, you must be able to walk six steep steps to board the bus.

Choose your level carefully: LEVEL 1: Easy, sitting/little walking. Must be able to stand 10 minutes without assistance or bring your walker or wheelchair.

LEVEL 2: Small amount of walking LEVEL 3: Moderate to heavy walking LEVEL 4: Heavy amount of walking/standing LEVEL 5: Strenuous walking/hiking If you aren’t sure where you fit, give us a call at (925) 314-3490.

Please let us know if you have any physical limitations prior to signing up for a trip so that we can accommodate your needs ahead of time.

Refund Policy: When registration falls below the minimum enrollment required, it may be necessary to cancel a trip. At the time of cancellation, the Town will initiate a full refund. Please allow 3 to 4 weeks for refunds to be processed.

Withdrawal and refund requests must be submitted at least five working days prior to the trip. You may elect to receive a credit on your account with no fees charged or a refund less a $20 cancellation fee. Refunds cannot be given for any reason for trips designated NON-REFUNDABLE..

Senior Sneakers Trips Trips for March and April Sacramento Capitol and California Museum Tour

“Fiddler on the Roof,” San Jose Performing Arts Center

Join us on an informative tour of the State Capitol. Our guides will provide us with an overall tour of the Capitol building. Be one of the first to see the new picture of Governor Schwarzenegger as we tour the gallery and learn about the history of past governors. We will then walk one block to the Secretary of State Building for lunch at the Gold Rush Grille. Following lunch, we will walk upstairs to the California Museum. The first part of the tour will be in the museum’s classroom featuring a presentation on the Japanese immigration experience.

The volunteer docents will share personal stories of this dark time in American history. For the second part of the tour, the group will move to the museum’s exhibit, “Uprooted! the Japanese American Experience During WWII” and proceed to tour a re-created barrack with an internment camp survivor guide. Cost: $46 resident; $55 non-resident. Price includes transportation, tour, and lunch.

Witness the magic of one of the most celebrated musicals in the history of musical theatre. Based on the book “Tevye and His Daughters,” the musical addresses timeless family issues, both dramatic and light-hearted.

Treasure Island and Golden Gate International Expo with Docent Craig Smith Thursday, March 10, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Join us on a guided tour with docent, Craig Smith, as he takes us on a historical tour of Treasure Island. We will visit the Pan Am Terminal, see the naval mural and learn the history of the 1939 World’s Fair. You won’t want to forget your camera while enjoying wonderful views of the San Francisco Bay on this fantastic journey throughout the island. Lunch and tour will be held at the U.S. Job Corps Culinary Academy. After lunch, we will see the Diego Rivera Mural Fresco created for the 1939 World’s Fair, and tour the uniquely designed Theater on City College campus in San Francisco. Cost: $42 resident; $50 non-resident. Price includes transportation, tour and lunch.

San Francisco International Airport Tour, Sky Train, Moraga Stairs and AIDS Memorial Thursday, April 7, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

San Francisco tour guide, Craig Smith, will take us on a tour of the San Francisco Airport art exhibits, airport museum and a replica of the original 1937 airport. Without the stress of air flight travel, we will take a 20 minute ride on the sky train around the entire airport. After our tour, lunch will be held at Buon Gusto, an Italian- Sicilian restaurant renowned for great food and great service in South San Francisco. Following lunch, we will visit the Moraga steps in San Francisco and see the beautiful mosaic stairs at Larsen’s Peak. We

San Joaquin County’s most prestigious agriculture product inspired the creation of the Stockton Asparagus Festival 23 years ago. The Stockton Asparagus Festival is a three-day event filled with food, and most of all, asparagus! The festival features two performance stages, an Asparagus Alley with the best deep-fried asparagus, one of the finest celebrity chef cooking demonstration kitchens, a fabulous Spear-its of the Valley wine and beer pavilion, and a craft show exhibiting more than 70 food products and 100 specialty merchant vendors. “How to Age-Proof your Brain.” This presentation contains information on the most recent neuro-science research and clinical results to reverse brain issues that were thought to be uncorrectable. Senior brain fitness programs will be addressed which include prevention of dementia, Alzheimers, “Chemo Brain” after chemotherapy, and sound therapy solutions to mental function slowing due to aging. If members of the class need further information, we will demonstrate how to create right-ear dominance to improve memory and mental focus. A portion of the lecture will address how to team up the left and right sides of the brain to eliminate anxiety for adults of all ages. FREE

After the tour, we will have lunch at SHOKOLAAT in downtown Palo Alto. Following lunch, there will be time alloted to browse the shops in the downtown area.

Local Spotlight:

Grace Chiu

Grace grew up in Taipei, Taiwan, China, the capital of the Republic of China where she attended the Taipei First Girls High School. Growing up in Taipei, Grace’s focus was to get excellent grades so she could get into the best colleges, and in due time was accepted into a college close to home. Her mother didn’t want Grace to spend any of her time cooking, therefore Grace didn’t learn to cook until later in life.

Soon after completing college, Grace was engaged to be married. She and her fiancé moved to the United States in order to continue her education in graduate school. During her graduate school years, she took various jobs teaching Algebra, Calculus and Statistics. By then, Grace and her fiancé were married, but she still didn’t know how to cook!

Her graduate school advisor’s wife took Grace under her wing and gave Grace her first cooking lessons- showing her the basics of food preparation and baking. One of the first lessons she learned was to prepare American foods such as turkey and roast beef.

Grace and her friends liked to host dinner parties which helped them learn to cook new foods and that is when Grace realized that cooking was fun and relaxing and she began to develop her own cooking style. Over the next few years, she worked as a Senior Biostatistician at a biomedical research institute. At that point in time, she had two children and continued to exchange recipes with friends, co-workers and associates.

In 1985, Grace and her family moved to California, where her husband was offered a new job. Her family first purchased a home in San Ramon, and within a few years, purchased a home in Danville, where they are still living today. In 1985, Grace began working at PG&E. Over the years, she took various positions in the company, but most of her work was very stressful, especially the years when she worked as the Manager of Risk Management.

Therfore, she used her love of cooking on the weekends in order to relax and spend time with her family.

Grace’s cooking philosophy consisted of three things:

Presented by the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of California, this presentation will answer many questions regarding the new health care bill including Medicare changes, issues regarding pre-existing conditions, new community health centers and much more. The UULM does this as part of the Central Valley Education Project, which is sponsored by Health Access in partnership with EQUAL Health Network and the UULM.

simplicity, keeping the original flavor and color, and planning economic dishes by preparing more than one meal at a time. Cooking in Grace’s home is a family affair.

She has always encouraged her children to cook with her because it has been a great bonding time for the family.

Grace has been retired for over a year now. When she is not spending time with her aging parents, Grace likes to share her cooking secrets through cooking classes. She currently teaches as a volunteer for the Town of Danville Senior Services cooking demonstration program, the Golden Crane Senior Center in Alamo, and for the Taipei First Girls High School Alumni Association of Northern California. Grace enjoys cooking for others because when they smile, it makes her very happy.

Grace’s other hobbies are singing soprano in the Zhi Yin Choir Group, line-dancing and hiking. For the past two years, Grace has been working on a cookbook that will be published in early 2011 titled, “A Taste from Traditional Chinese Cuisine to Every Day Simple Western Meals.”

The book will be a journey and compilation of her favorite recipes.

Her advice to other seniors, “Get a lot of enjoyment and fill your life with joy. Be involved and get together with others; it makes life more meaningful.”

A refresher course designed for drivers 50 and older, this course covers normal physical changes and provides techniques to compensate for these changes. The course fosters defensive driving practices to stay alive in today’s fast moving highways and includes an auto insurance discount certificate. Bring a $12 check for members and a $14 check for non-members check made payable to AARP to the first class.

This is a specialized, senior self-defense training class incorporating the use of a walking cane. Class consists 10-15 minutes of warm-up/lecture, and 45-50 minutes of training where you will learn proper techniques that will include how to hold, twirl, strike, poke, jab and block.

For those who depend on the cane for vertical (standing) support, self-defense techniques include those that can be performed in a sitting position. Please bring your own cane. Cost: $15

Location: Library, Mount Diablo Room Volunteer Instructor: Bonnie Epstein Many of us would like gardens full of plants that require less care, water, and soil amendments. This class will provide information about specific plants that thrive in dry climates by visiting actual public and private gardens. Participants will learn all about how to care for indigenous plants that grow successfully in our local environment and require less attention. The first class will meet at the Town of Danville Library on March 21 at 10:30 am. All other classes will be field trips to public and private gardens. At the first meeting, we will discuss various locations, flexible times, logistics and a bit about gardens. We will plan to do six garden visits as weather allows. Hiking Club The Danville Area Senior Hikes (DASH) is open to adults ages 55 and up. The group will set out from the San Ramon Valley Museum (corner of Prospect and Railroad Avenue) on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 8:45 a.m. and return about 1:00 p.m. Most hikes are not strenuous, but gradients are involved due to the local terrain. What You Wanted to Know About Computers But Were Afraid to Ask. Questions on Microsoft Windows XP, VISTA, System 7 Operating Systems, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail, internet browsing using Internet Explorer, backing up files, copying and pasting files and/or pictures to external media, attaching files or pictures to e-mail, and configuring new laptops, are welcome at all sessions If you have an appointment regarding your e-mail account, please bring your e-mail address and password login information. Students may bring their own laptop or a laptop with Windows XP will be provided for use during your appointment.

There are many reasons for memory loss, from simple age-related decline to more serious conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. Many times, memory loss can be improved by medical treatment. Early diagnosis and intervention provides the best outcome. Meet experts who will provide informational materials.
