Calling all Instructors!

The Seniors Services division is currently looking for qualified instructors to offer all types of classes for adults 55 and up at the newly renovated Veterans Memorial Building which is set to open at the beginning of 2012. If you have the knowledge and skills to teach nutrition classes, health and fitness classes, language classes, craft activities, and/or hobbies to adults over the age of 55 you are encouraged to submit a proposal. Classes will be offered at various times including early evenings and weekends.

Senior Sneakers Trips Explore, Learn and be Entertained!

The Town of Danville’s Senior Sneakers program is a great way to make new friends and get out and around the greater Bay Area. There’s always something new to see and learn. Either way, you will have a great time. Mail or drop off your registration form to the Danville Community Center, 420 Front St., Danville, CA 94526. Please include your email address on the registration form so the registrar’s office can email you your receipt.

The Community Center is conveniently located adjacent to the Danville Library. Danville resident registrations submitted prior to the first day of registration will be entered on Thursday, August 18 at 8:30 a.m., and nonresident registrations will be processed on Friday, August 19 at 8:30 a.m.

Phone registration will take place after the second day of registration.

To register over the phone with a Visa, Master Card or American Express, please contact the Danville Community Center at (925) 314-3400. Trips will meet at the Danville Park & Ride lot (Sycamore Valley Boulevard) unless otherwise noted. Please note! The times listed for each Senior Sneaker trip are approximate. Staff will mail out a detailed checklist approximately one week before the trip with the exact meeting time. If you register shortly before the day of the trip, please request this information from the registrar’s office (Community Center front desk) at the time of registration.

Registration Priority: Due to the high demand of the Town’s Senior Sneaker program, seniors will be limited to registering for two trips per month, or a total of four per issue of the Silver Streak newsletter. When choosing your trips, please number them in order of priority. See registration form for additional information.

ACTIVITY LEVELS

Each trip has an Activity Level. Plus, you must be able to walk six steep steps to board the bus.

Choose your level carefully: LEVEL 1: Easy, sitting/little walking. Must be able to stand 10 minutes without assistance or bring your walker or wheelchair.

LEVEL 2: Small amount of walking LEVEL 3: Moderate to heavy walking LEVEL 4: Heavy amount of walking/standing LEVEL 5: Strenuous walking/hiking If you aren’t sure where you fit, give us a call at (925) 314-3490.

Please let us know if you have any physical limitations prior to signing up for a trip so that we can accommodate your needs ahead of time.

Refund Policy: When registration falls below the minimum enrollment required, it may be necessary to cancel a trip. At the time of cancellation, the Town will initiate a full refund. Please allow 3 to 4 weeks for refunds to be processed.

Withdrawal and refund requests must be submitted at least five working days prior to the trip. You may elect to receive a credit on your account with no fees charged or a refund less a $20 cancellation fee. Refunds cannot be given for any reason for trips designated NON-REFUNDABLE..

Senior Sneakers Trips Trips for September & October National Heirloom Exposition-Santa Rosa

Picasso Exhibit-de Young Museum

Join us at the World’s Fair of Heirlooms in Santa Rosa.

Come see and enjoy the aroma of several hundreds of varieties of traditional vegetables, fruits and other foods.

Enjoy the summer’s bounty from the farms and gardens of all 50 states. There will be music, award- winning chefs, a garden art show, a poultry and livestock show and music with historical performers like Sourdough Slim, who brings back a bygone era. Cost: $28 resident; $34 non-resident.

Price includes: transportation and admission. Please bring money for lunch on your own. Activity Level: 3-4

The de Young hosts an extraordinary exhibition of more than 100 masterpieces by Spanish Artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) from the permanent collection of Paris’ worldrenowned Musee National Picasso. The once-in-a-lifetime exhibition, comprises paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints drawn from every phase of the artist’s career. We will have an hour-long docent-led tour before the exhibit opens and then have the use of audio devices to go back through the exhibit once the museum opens to the public. You may also venture outside to the Japanese Tea Garden, located next to the Museum. Gourmet boxed lunches are included and will be served in the café. Cost: $54 resident; $65 nonresident. Price includes: transportation, tour, audio device and box lunch. Please bring money if you plan on visiting the Japanese Tea Garden. Activity Level: 3-4

Cruise to Angel Island aboard the USS Potomac, FDR’S “Floating White House.” Opened to the public in 1995, the Association for the Preservation of the Presidential Yacht Potomac now operates this National Historic Landmark as an active memorial to Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the momentous times through which he led our nation.

Once at Angel Island, discover another National Historic Landmark, the United States Immigration Station (USIS), recently reopened after extensive renovation. The cruise will depart from Jack London Square. Cost: $93 resident; $112 non-resident. Price includes: transportation, tour and organized lunch. Activity Level: 3-4

The Senior Sneakers Fleet Week trip tradition continues!

Join us aboard the “Celebrations On The Bay” for a preview of Fleet Week’s annual show. We will board the two-deck riverboat-style vessel at 1:00 p.m. and enjoy a practice air show featuring the Blue Full Air Show, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation. This cruise will include a barbecue buffet luncheon. Cost: $92 resident; $110 non-resident. Price includes: transportation, cruise and organized lunch. Activity Level: 2

“Assisted Living” the Musical

Filoli Garden Tour

“Assisted Living” the musical is a hit show for anyone who is growing older or thinking of doing so someday.

This musical tribute to “growing older disgracefully” shares a space with the show “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” in the heart of Chinatown at the Imperial Palace Theater.

Bay area performers sing and play a 75-minute rollicking ride through the pleasures and perils of later life. Before the show our group will be treated to a traditional Dim Sum Banquet. There will be time to explore Chinatown following the show. Cost: $80 resident; $96 non-resident.

Price includes: transportation, tour and organized lunch.

Recognized as one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century, Filoli welcomes our group to this remarkable 654-acre garden, including the 36,000 square foot Georgian country house and spectacular 16-acre English Renaissance garden. Filoli is a private property of the National Trust for the Historic Preservation and is dedicated to the preservation, interpretation and stewardship of the cultural tradition and the natural history of this country estate for education and enjoyment. We will have a two-hour private docent-led tour and time in the Garden Shop.

After the tour we will have lunch at John Bentley’s in Redwood City. Cost: $62 resident; $74 non-resident.

Local Spotlight: George Momaney George Momaney grew up on a fiftyacre farm in Montague, Massachusetts, the seventh of ten children. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the Army and was stationed near Munich, Germany, where he attended Administration School during his service with the Army. He graduated and returned to Greenfield, Massachusetts.

Back in the United States, George got a job as the purchasing agent at a local hospital. It would be his stepping stone in life, both personally and professionally.

This is where he met his wife, Helen, who was the hospital administrators’ secretary. They married two years later, and have been married for almost fiftyfour years, with four children and six grandchildren.

Within the first year of his job as purchasing agent, George accepted a position with McKesson, a pharmaceutical distribution company, where he worked for 33 years. When the company moved from New York to San Francisco in 1973, George and his family

moved to California where he held many positions within the company, the latest as Executive Vice President, a General Manager of McKesson Marketing Companies. During this time, he also served on the Board of Directors for the National Wholesale Druggists’ Association. After his retirement in 1989, George continued to work as a consultant for many years.

George is passionate about volunteering and has done so for most of his life. Most seniors know him as “Mr. Bocce,” running the Thursday morning Danville Senior Bocce at Sycamore Valley Community Park. While raising his four children, George sat on the Board of Directors for the San Ramon Little League, was a Little League Manager and served as a coach in CYO Boys Basketball League.

In recent years, he managed the San Ramon Senior Center Bocce Courts, coached bocce for Special Olympians, served lunches for Loaves & Fishes in Concord, and managed Danville’s Senior Bocce Leagues. George said, “I loved volunteering as a coach, it was great

to see the development in the players.”

Today, “kids” who are now in their 40’s still know him as “Coach.”

George attributes his active lifestyle to staying involved in activities and keeping his mind working. Next time you’re on the bocce courts, look for George; he is the one always wearing a hat!

Location: Oak Hill Park Community Center, Classroom Instructor: AARP Driving Instructor This course is designed for drivers 50 and older and covers normal physical changes and provides techniques to compensate for these changes. The course fosters defensive driving practices to stay alive in today’s fast moving highways and includes an auto insurance discount certificate. Bring a $12 check for members and a $14 check for non-members; check made payable to AARP at the first class.

This is a specialized, senior self-defense training class incorporating the use of a walking cane. Class consists of 10-15 minutes of warm-up/lecture, and 45-50 minutes of training, where you will learn proper techniques that will include how to hold, twirl, strike, poke, jab and block.

For those who depend on the cane for vertical (standing) support, self-defense techniques include those that can be performed in a sitting position. Please bring your own cane.

Cost: $15 per monthly session

Are you tired of paying high prices for store brought greeting cards, scrapbook pages and gifts? Now you can make your own greeting cards and more in an easy, inexpensive and fun way through the rubber stamping technique with wonderful embellishments. These classes are for all levels of expertise. All tools and supplies, except double-sided tape, for three projects per each class will be provided. If you are unable to attend a class, the completed projects will

be provided to you. Cost: $19 plus a $20 supply fee for the class payable to the instructor on the first day of class. Bring craft style double-sided tape or $6.00 to purchase tape from the instructor. You may register immediately for this class.

Senior Softball

Registration Deadline: September 8 Age 55Y and up Year-round leagues on the synthetic turf fields at Sycamore Valley Park. You must register as a team, maximum of 18 players per team. Free Agents will be placed on a waiting list and when there are enough free agents to form a team, they will be notified and placed accordingly. To add your name to the Free Agent list, call Senior Services, (925) 3143490. Player must turn the minimum age by December 31, 2012 to qualify for that league. League includes playoffs for top four teams and Championship t-shirts. Season runs mid-September through mid-March. Completed roster with full payment must be submitted at the time of registration to reserve a team spot. Registration forms and team roster/ waivers are available at the Community Center or at www.danville.ca.gov (search: Senior Softball).

Location: Mondays—Town Meeting Hall Wednesdays—Danville Community Center, Valley Oak Room Instructor: Marcia Conroy Yoga is for everyone, no matter what age or how flexible you are. This class will take you through a series of gentle stretches and joint movements for increased flexibility and an expanded range of motion. You will also learn breathing techniques to help balance your body, mind and emotions.

Wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat and firm blanket.

It is also best to practice yoga on an empty stomach. Cost for classes on Monday is $133 resident; $160 non-resident and on Wednesdays is $124 resident; $149 non-resident.

Dale can teach you how to use your iMac or MacBook’s track pad, basic calendaring, word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations, navigating e-mail, emailing files or pictures or attaching them to an e-mail, videoconferencing, browsing the internet using Safari, using the iTunes Store to get and use, apps, games, ebooks, audiobooks, podcasts, music, ringtones, TV shows, and movies for your iPod, iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad, and burning iTunes music, iPhoto pictures, and iMovie and iDVD videos onto CDs or DVDs. Students must bring their own device (iPod, iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad, iMac, or MacBook) to the session. Free Memory Screening

for Medicare Beneficiaries and their Families Wednesdays, September 14 and October 12 Tuesdays, September 27 and October 25

HICAP provides free and objective counseling and advocacy services to Medicare beneficiaries and their families who need assistance with Medicare enrollment and with issues involving Medicare and associated insurance programs, including prescription drug coverage. HICAP helps beneficiaries understand Medicare, explains the resources and options available to them, and assists them with provider billings and with filing claims and appeals.

Appointments are available the 2nd Wednesdays and 4th Tuesdays of each month.

Registration forms can be dropped off or mailed to the Danville Community Center at 420 Front Street, Danville, CA 94526. All resident registrations submitted prior to the first day of registration will be entered on Thursday, August 18, with no priority given.

The Town of Danville is looking for seniors who are interested in providing short and informal presentations about personal hobbies or interests. This is a great way to share your abilities with others in the Danville Community. If you are interested in sharing your hobby with a small group, please contact Senior Services Coordinator, Jenn Overmoe at (925) 314-3491 or jovermoe@danville.ca.gov.

Volunteer opportunities are also available for driving seniors to appointments, leading walks, facilitating book clubs, organizing card games such as Bunco or Mah-Jongg, or help with office work such as filing, answering calls, mailings, and helping with monthly special events.
