Town Requests Your Input Regarding Programs for New Senior Center As you may have seen, construction on the Veterans Memorial Building is moving along nicely and the renovated building will include a portion that will be dedicated to service senior citizens as the Town’s Senior Center. The new Senior Center will consist of up to six rooms for senior citizen priority use which is three times as large as the previous facilities which house senior programs. With the anticipated opening of the Veterans Memorial Building fast approaching, the Town is interested in gathering information regarding the current and future needs of our senior citizens. In addition to programming ideas and needs, the survey will inquire about transportation needs, planned frequency of use, Senior Center memberships and communication.

In June, the Town will mail surveys to everyone on the Silver Streak mailing list. The Town would appreciate your time and effort to complete the survey and return it to the Danville Community Center at 420 Front Street. Surveys will be due at the beginning of July and results will be available for consideration at the July 27 Senior Issues Sub-committee meeting. The quarterly Sub-committee meeting will be held at the Town Meeting Hall at 4 p.m.

Senior Sneakers Trips Explore, Learn and be Entertained!

The Town of Danville’s Senior Sneakers program is a great way to make new friends and get out and around the greater Bay Area. There’s always something new to see and learn. Either way, you will have a great time.

Mail or drop off your registration form to the Danville Community Center, 420 Front St., Danville, CA 94526. Please include your email address on the registration form so the registrar’s office can email your receipt.

The Community Center is conveniently located adjacent to the Danville Library. Danville resident registrations submitted prior to the first day of registration will be entered on Wednesday, June 15, at 8:30 a.m., and nonresident registrations will be processed on Thursday, June 16, at 8:30 a.m.

Phone registration will take place after the second day of registration.

To register over the phone with a Visa, Master Card or American Express, please contact the Danville Community Center at (925) 314-3400. Trips will meet at the Danville Park & Ride lot (Sycamore Valley Boulevard) unless otherwise noted. Please note! The times listed for each Senior Sneaker trip are approximate. Staff will mail out a detailed checklist approximately one week before the trip with the exact meeting time. If you register shortly before the day of the trip, please request this information from the registrar’s office (Community Center front desk) at the time of registration.

Registration Priority: Due to the high demand of the Town’s Senior Sneaker program, seniors will be limited to registering for two trips per month, or a total of four per issue of the Silver Streak newsletter. When choosing your trips, please number them in order of priority. See registration form for additional information.

ACTIVITY LEVELS Each trip has an Activity Level. Plus, you must be able to walk six steep steps to board the bus.

Choose your level carefully: LEVEL 1: Easy, sitting/little walking. Must be able to stand 10 minutes without assistance or bring your walker or wheelchair.

LEVEL 2: Small amount of walking LEVEL 3: Moderate to heavy walking LEVEL 4: Heavy amount of walking/standing LEVEL 5: Strenuous walking/hiking If you aren’t sure where you fit, give us a call at (925) 314-3490.

Please let us know if you have any physical limitations prior to signing up for a trip so that we can accommodate your needs ahead of time.

Refund Policy: When registration falls below the minimum enrollment required, it may be necessary to cancel a trip. At the time of cancellation, the Town will initiate a full refund. Please allow 3 to 4 weeks for refunds to be processed.

Withdrawal and refund requests must be submitted at least five working days prior to the trip. You may elect to receive a credit on your account with no fees charged or a refund less a $20 cancellation fee. Refunds cannot be given for any reason for trips designated NON-REFUNDABLE..

Once a year, the Farms of Tuolumne County open their gates and invite the public to visit a variety of locations.

We will stop at the renowned, state-of-the-art Diestel Turkey Ranch, Hurst Ranch and Feed Store which has an old-West feel with an authentic train ride. We will have a barbeque lunch at Outlaws, in Sonora, then visit Indigeny Reserve, an apple cider distillery and llama farm. Cost: $68 resident; $82 non-resident. Price includes: transportation, tour fees and an organized lunch.

Bastille Day Celebration-Pans on Fire Cooking School Thursday, July 14, 2:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m.

Join us for an afternoon celebrating “zee French.” Pans on Fire, a cooking school and kitchen store on Main Street in Pleasanton, will host our group of Francofiles with a cooking demo and wonderful lunch. The menu will be French inspired (mais oui!) in honor of Bastille Day. A representative from Nordstroms will provide a presentation on the secrets of scarf styling, one of the most important French femme accessories. Vive la France! Following the presentation, you will have time to shop in downtown Pleasanton. Cost: $60 resident; $72 non-resident. Price includes: transportation, cooking demonstration and meal prepared at Pans on Fire.

River Rafting on the American River Thursday, July 21, 8:15 a.m.-9:00 p.m.

Before embarking on the river, the group will enjoy a delicious barbeque lunch hosted by the All Outdoors Adventure Team. This white-water rafting adventure trip travels down the South Fork of the American River.

The rafting trip is 12 miles long and begins at Camp Lotus. The first seven miles on the river are a Level 1 whitewater “warm up.” The last five- mile-long stretch is a challenging Level 3 filled with whitewater rapids and excitement. We will stop for dinner on the way home.

Cost: $147 resident; $176 non-resident (nonrefundable).

Price includes: transportation, organized lunch and admission. Please bring money for dinner on your own.

Meyers House and Garden Tour, Pier 29 Restaurant and Naval Air Station Museum Wednesday, August 3, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Alameda’s first and only house exhibit, the Meyers House, is a lovely example of Colonial Revival architecture. The house was built in 1897 by the architect, Jacob Meyer.

Come learn about this fascinating historical house. We will have lunch at restaurant Pier 29 in Alameda while enjoying panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay. Following lunch, we will take a tour of the Naval Air Station museum, also located in Alameda. Cost: $49 resident; $59 non-resident. Price includes: transportation, tour and organized lunch. Monterey Movie Tour and Lunch Wednesday, August 10, 8:00 a.m-5:30 p.m.

This spectacularly fun land tour begins in downtown Monterey, where you will visit such historic sites as Colton Hall, and the Fisherman’s Wharf area where several blockbuster movies were filmed. We will travel through historic Cannery Row that has been the setting for many movies over the years, including Clash by Night, Cannery Row and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. You will enjoy views of Monterey Bay, Pacific Grove and the area’s majestic coastline. The tour will meander through 17Mile Drive in Pebble Beach, where movies have used the beauty of the coastline for many of their notorious action scenes. We will visit The Lodge at Pebble Beach and the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links and travel through

Orinda Water Treatment Plant and Water Shed Headquarters Tour

The Orinda Water Treatment Plant is operated by the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD). The facility has the largest output of all EBMUD water treatment plants, with a capacity of 200 million gallons of water per day. We will tour the facility and learn more about the water treatment process.

At the conclusion of the tour, the group will go to the Watershed Headquarters for a presentation on the watershed. The group will remain at the watershed for a picnic lunch in a beautiful setting under the trees catered by La Boulange of Danville. Cost: $31 resident; $37 non-resident. Price includes: transportation, tour of the Water Treatment Plant and Watershed Headquarters and an organized lunch. Activity Level: 2-3

Location: Town Meeting Hall Presenter: Nathalie Berra-Miller “Mindful eating is based in mindfulness and meditative principles.” These principles have been applied to Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction very successfully and can also be effectively applied to the way we eat.

Mindful eating involves experiencing and being in the moment of eating, through all our senses and for all its enjoyment and nourishment. This is in contrast to judging ways of eating as either right or wrong. It can support life-long healthy eating and weight. Everybody has muscle tightness at some point in their life. We can stretch all we want, but we have to relieve the fascia to get a release. There are rollers and balls that you roll on to compress the fascia to give yourself a massage and increase your range of motion, as well as decrease pain. The tools can be used at home and are portable to carry on vacation as well. Brandi will demonstrate how you can roll yourself from foot to neck. Come learn how to empower yourself with the use of Trigger Point and help your body feel its best.

Bette Lange

Since Bette has been retired, she has enjoyed good health and is thankful for the luxury to travel and spend time with friends. Besides her extensive traveling, Bette enjoys her time at home with family and friends and her four grandchildren. She has a brother and two sisters in the area and many cousins. Bette is known for hosting family reunions of three generations to swim, barbeque and visit. She has also gathered together with her neighbors for 45 years of backyard socials.

Born and raised in Oakland, Bette Lange moved to Danville in the early 1950’s. Her parents, aunt, uncle and three other couples moved from the Oakland hills to purchase property in Diablo. They built five homes in a circle, sharing a common pool area in the middle of the properties.

Bette married and raised two children, Julie and Jay. The kids attended St. Isidore’s and San Ramon Valley High School. Bette was always involved at the children’s schools by volunteering her time. It was about this time that Bette joined the Papaya Branch of Children’s Hospital Oakland, a local fundraising group.

They held many great fundraising events at the Annual Danville Fair and Gordon Ball Estate. Bette made many lifelong friends through this group, including Bob & Jill Brennan and Dori Davi, now fellow Senior Sneaker participants.

In the 1980’s Bette went to work as a personal assistant to a prominent Oakland attorney. She spent the next 25 years managing her boss’ homes, planes, investment portfolio, travel

A real priority in Bette’s life today is volunteering. She works one or two days a week at John Muir Hospital, drives for the American Cancer Society, taking patients for treatments, and assists with fundraising as a member of the Blackhawk Guild.

Since being told she is a CMV donor (this blood type is designated to sick infants in need), Bette donates her blood every 56 days.

Bette loves Senior Sneaker trips, near and far. She says it’s a treat to sit on the bus, have the arrangements made and visit with friends. She often sees old friends on trips and has made many new friends. Some of the out-

of-state trips she has been on: white water rafting on the Colorado River, Sedona, Arizona, Park City, Utah and to the Monument Valley. Next time you’re on a Senior Sneaker trip look for Bette, you will always find her in the back of the bus. She says, “I look forward to many more Sneaker Trips!”

This is a specialized, senior self-defense training class incorporating the use of a walking cane. Class consists of 10-15 minutes of warm-up/lecture, and 45-50 minutes of training, where you will learn proper techniques that will include how to hold, twirl, strike, poke, jab and block.

For those who depend on the cane for vertical (standing) support, self-defense techniques include those that can be performed in a sitting position. Please bring your own cane. Cost: $15 per monthly session

Improve your heart health with a group class that includes low-impact stretching and aerobics. Bring a mat or towel for floor exercises. Cost: $20

This class will take you through a series of gentle stretches and joint movements for increased flexibility and an expanded range of motion. You will also learn breathing techniques to help balance your body, mind and emotions. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat and firm blanket. It is also best to practice yoga on an empty stomach. Health & Wellness Programs For Seniors

Hiking Club The Danville Area Senior Hikes (DASH) is open to adults ages 55 and up. The group will set out from the Danville Park-n-Ride (next to the 680 NorthboundSycamore Valley freeway on-ramp) on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 8:45 a.m. and return about 1:00 p.m. Most hikes are not strenuous, but gradients are involved due to the local terrain. Distances are usually 4-5 miles, and the pace is moderate. Trailheads are reached via carpools; passengers are asked to make a donation of 10 cents/mile to the driver. If you think that you are physically active and want to join us for a hike, contact Jenn Overmoe, Program Coordinator, (925) 3143491 or email jovermoe@danville.ca.gov.

There are many reasons for memory loss, from simple age-related decline to more serious conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. Many times, memory loss can be improved by medical treatment. Early diagnosis and intervention provides the best outcome. Meet experts who will provide informational materials. Seniors can schedule an appointment for memory screening provided by Caring Solutions by calling Senior Services (925) 314-3490. Location: Danville Community Center HICAP offers free counseling services to anyone on Medicare or at least 60 years old. Counselors help clients with Medicare bills and guide seniors through the appeal process if benefits are denied. Counselors also compare policies. Location: Village Theatre The Silverliners will present their rendition of the Broadway show “Guys and Dolls.” The show about racetracks touts, Rialto louts and activities in Times Square, opened in 1950 and has been acclaimed the best musical comedy of all time. The Silverliners is a musical group of former community theater veterans and music professionals who have performed at senior and assisted living centers for the past ten years. The Town of Danville is looking for seniors who are interested in providing short and informal presentations about personal hobbies or interests. This is a great way to share your abilities with others in the Danville Community. If you are interested in sharing your hobby with a small group, please contact Senior Services Coordinator, Jenn Overmoe at (925) 314-3491 or jovermoe@danville.ca.gov.

Volunteer opportunities are also available for driving seniors to appointments, leading walks, facilitating book clubs, organizing card games such as Bunco or Mah-Jongg, or help with office work such as filing, answering calls, mailings, and helping with monthly special events.
