New Building Update With expansion of the Veterans Memorial Building, the Town has been busy planning special events and programs to offer new and exciting classes for seniors. As you know, the new Senior Center will consist of up to six rooms for senior citizen weekday priority use. This is three times as large the number of areas which have historically been available for the Town’s senior programs. With this additional space, the Town can expand its existing programs for seniors.

Please refer to page 7 of this publication to view just a few of the new classes which will be held at other Town facilities until the completion of the new Veterans Memorial Building. Once the new building is available for occupancy, look for new classes and programs such as Spanish and Chinese language classes, yoga, ballet, folk guitar, Black Dragon chess, art classes, and more one-on-one sessions in computers, cameras, and medical screenings. Also if you know someone who has a special skill or talent to share as a tutor or instructor, please contact Senior Services at 314-3490.

Meet new and existing instructors at the first senior special event in the new building! The drop-in Senior Services Recreation Expo will give you the opportunity to see a sample of the expanded programs and classes that have been planned. Instructors will be on hand to discuss the programs and answer questions about topics, schedule, and skill level. Tours of the building will be provided to small groups throughout the free Expo event and light refreshments will be served. We hope to see many of you there!

Senior Sneakers Trips The Town of Danville’s Senior Sneakers program is a great way to make new friends and get out and around the greater Bay Area. Mail or drop off your registration form to the Danville Community Center. Phone registration will take place after the second day of registration by calling (925) 314-3400. Trips will meet at the Danville Park & Ride lot. Please note the times listed for each Senior Sneaker trip are approximate. A detailed checklist will be mailed one week prior with the exact meeting time. If you register shortly before the day of the trip, please request this information from the registrar’s office at the time of registration.

ACTIVITY LEVELS

Each trip has an Activity Level. Plus, you must be able to walk six steep steps to board the bus.

Choose your level carefully: LEVEL 1: Easy, sitting/little walking. Must be able to stand 10 minutes without assistance or bring your walker or wheelchair.

LEVEL 2: Small amount of walking LEVEL 3: Moderate to heavy walking LEVEL 4: Heavy amount of walking/standing LEVEL 5: Strenuous walking/hiking If you aren’t sure where you fit, give us a call at (925) 3143490. Please let us know if you have any physical limitations prior to signing up for a trip so that we can accommodate your needs ahead of time.

Trips for January & February Open Rehearsal of Michael Tilson Thomas conducting San Francisco Symphony Thursday, January 5, 7:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Join us for a morning of coffee, conversation, education and incredible music in the makingat Davies Symphony Hall. Open rehearsals are working rehearsals. The pieces rehearsed are at the conductor’s discretion. The conductor, Michael Tilson Thomas, will talk prior to the rehearsal. The rehearsal will last approximately two hours. Cost: $40 resident; $48 non-resident. Price includes: transportation and admission. Activity Level: 1-2

Winchester Mystery House, San Jose Thursday, January 19, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Visit the Winchester Mystery House and marvel at why Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune, built this 160 room mansion, 24 hours a day for 38 continuous years. Our docent-led tour will last sixty-five minutes. After a barbecue lunch we will visit the Historical Fire Arms Museum, Winchester Antique Products museums, and the Gift shop. If weather permits, we will be able to walk the lovely gardens on the property. Cost: $63 resident; $76 non-resident. Price includes: transportation tour and lunch. Activity Level: 4-5 (there are approx. 120 small riser steps on the tour).

Senior Sneakers Trips PLANES AND CARS! The California Automobile Museum and Aerospace Museum of California Tuesday, January 24, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

We start off at the California Auto Museum, located in Sacramento with an hour long docent led tour.

The car aficionado car shop at the Good Shop is a gearheads dream! We will enjoy lunch inside Vic’s Ice Cream Parlor, located in the auto museum. Next, we go to the Aerospace Museum, in McClellan, which has on display fighters, trainers, transports, and specialized types flown by the USAF and Navy during the 60 year period from 1940-2000. Our docent-led tour will take us into the exhibition hall and the Airpark.

Cost: $42 Resident; $50 non-resident. Price includes: transportation, tours, and a box lunch from A Sweet Affair, Danville. Activity Level: 3-4

Professor Ming’s Mansion Performance and lunch in Chinatown Saturday, February 25, 11:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

The day will start off with a special lunch in Chinatown at Louies California Cuisine followed by a performance of Professor Ming’s Mansion. This production follows the life of a prominent physician whose compassion and generosity to the poor seem to inspire all around him. But what schemes are being plotted behind those walls? Presented in English and Cantonese, this play is filled with music, song, dance and action. Cost: $41 resident; $49 non-resident.

San Francisco Moving Movie Tour

Wednesday, February 8, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Join San Francisco’s popular tour guide, Craig Smith, for a comprehensive and fun motor coach tour of the movies made in and about San Francisco.

The tour begins at the St. Francis Hotel. We will see over 80 film clips with many of the greatest names in movie history. Cost: $47 resident; $56 non-resident.

Price includes: transportation, lunch at Fog Harbor Fish House and tour. We will stop at Mel’s Drive-In for dessert, so bring money if you wish. Activity

Spend your Valentine’s Day with us! Join us for a LOVE inspired tour of the Legion of Honor. Mosaic Garden Art Create a one-of-a-kind mosaic for your garden or home. Jean Cernigoj love for mosaics started 15 years ago. This led her to study mosaic design and the techniques necessary to complete mosaic art. She most enjoys teaching and watching the artist within her students emerge.

Nutrition Classes

Chalk Pastel Painting Classes will consist of demonstrations and work in still life within an interior/exterior context, figure work. Occasional travel to local areas in Danville for outdoor painting with pastel sessions. Warren Dreher, is one of the Bay Area’s premiere landscape painters. He has had numerous one man exhibitions and taught classes in pastel and oil painting throughout California.

How to handle stress, demystifying cholesterol, controlling your blood pressure and sleep deprivation will be the topics Shannon William’s new nutrition classes for will cover this winter. Shannon received her nutrition training from Bauman College in Berkeley, CA and Clayton College of Natural Health in Birmingham, AL. Previously Shannon was a personal chef and cooked for hundreds of Bay Area households for many years.

Learn how to achieve more joy, health and happiness in your life. Becky Shafi is a mid-life diva who has found success with her own diva journey. She is a mother of three, wife of 25 years and actively seeks to live joyfully each day helping other women discover the gifts of their diva selves.

Enjoying Great Shakespearean Speeches With video and audio, the class will first listen to a variety of speeches, discuss them as a group and then try reciting them individually. Laura currently teaches all levels of college English courses at Los Medanos College. Make your own greeting cards! All tools and supplies, except double-sided tape, for three projects per each class will be provided. If you are unable to attend a class, the completed projects will be provided to you.

Location: Town Meeting Hall Instructor: Bob Worthington This is a specialized, senior self-defense training class incorporating the use of a walking cane. Class consists of warm-up/lecture, and training. For those who depend on the cane for vertical (standing) support, self-defense techniques include those that can be performed in a sitting position. Please bring your own cane and wear comfortable shoes (no open toe shoes). Cost: $15 resident; $18 non-resident. No class 1/2, 1/16, and 2/20.

Hiking Club

Free Blood Pressure Screenings

The Danville Area Senior Hikes (DASH) is open to adults ages 55 and up. The group will set out from the Danville Park-n-Ride (next to the 680 NorthboundSycamore Valley freeway on-ramp) on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 8:45 a.m. and return about 1:00 p.m. Most hikes are not strenuous, but gradients are involved due to the local terrain. Distances are usually 4-5 miles, and the pace is moderate.

Trailheads are reached via carpools; passengers are asked to make a donation of 10 cents/mile to the driver. Hikes scheduled for January and February will be held on: 1/11, 1/25, 2/8 and 2/22. HICAP helps beneficiaries understand Medicare, explains the resources and options available to them, and assists them with provider billings and with filing claims and appeals. Appointments are

January 23 and February 27 Location: Town Meeting Hall There are many reasons for memory loss, from simple age-related decline to more serious conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. Many times, memory loss can be improved by medical treatment. Early diagnosis and intervention provides the best outcome. Rotary Chapter Handyman Program Seniors have a new resource to call for basic household chores that they are unable to repair because of physical condition or safety issues.

The Danville/Sycamore Valley Chapter of Rotary International is launching its Rotary HOME Team, a program that performs basic home repairs for seniors for free. In partnership with Episcopal Senior Communities, a nonprofit that provides housing and services for seniors in Northern California, the Rotary HOME Team is now operating in seven Bay Area counties. The Town of Danville is looking for seniors who are interested in providing short and informal presentations about personal hobbies or interests. This is a great way to share your abilities with others in the Danville Community. Free Tax Aide Preparation for the 2012 tax season will again be offered by Tax-Aide’s AARP sponsored program. The service, provided by IRS certified tax preparers, is available starting February 2012. TaxAide does not specify an income limit but the service targets low and moderate income taxpayers of any age with special attention given to seniors 60 plus.

Appointments will take place on Tuesdays between 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., February 7 through April 17. All of the service is FREE. Appointments can be made after mid-January. Walk-ins are also welcome. All resident registrations submitted prior to the first day of registration will be entered on Thursday, December 14, with no priority given.

Senior Sneakers Trip Refund Policy: When registration falls below the minimum enrollment required, it may be necessary to cancel a trip. At the time of cancellation, the Town will initiate a full refund. Please allow 3 to 4 weeks for refunds to be processed. Withdrawal and refund requests must be submitted at least five working days prior to the trip. You may elect to receive a credit on your account with no fees charged or a refund less a $20 cancellation fee. Refunds cannot be given for any reason for trips designated NON-REFUNDABLE.

Senior Sneakers Trip Registration Priority: Due to the high demand of the Town’s Senior Sneaker program, seniors will be limited to registering for two trips per month, or a total of four per issue of the Silver Streak newsletter. When choosing your trips, please number them in order of priority. See registration form for additional information.
