Water In: Water Out

Tuesday, March 19, 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Presenter: Thomas E. Lindemuth, Sr., B.S., University of Wisconsin, M.E., Marquette

California faces serious resource challenges, none more pressing than those bearing on water supplies. Locally, the health of the Delta commands attention because of its impact on regional ecologies, economies, and even cultures. Mr. Lindemuth offers us a close look at how water quality is measured and what that measurement can tell us about the fate of plant, animal, and human habitats dependent on clean water. Seepage from municipal sewage, agricultural runoff, and runoff from urban places all pollute Delta water. What can be done to reduce such threats, and what obstacles, political and natural, stand in the way? Here are questions begging for answers. Come join the search for them!

Mary Lincoln Todd: First Lady of Controversy Tuesday, April 16, 1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Presenter: C. Jean Blaser, Ph.D. Developmental Psychology, University of New Mexico

How did Mary Todd Lincoln, a young woman from the slave state of Kentucky deal with the politics, social formalities, rivalries, backbiting, and glare of public life when she arrived in Washington D.C. in 1861? Not well, as it turned out, and Mrs. Lincoln was the first First Lady to be engulfed in controversy, both during her time in Washington and after she left the Capital city. Everything was up for scrutiny; her shopping habits, her redecorating at the White House, those mysterious séances, her demand for a pension, and the selling of her clothes. Join Dr. Blaser for an exploration of Mrs. Lincoln’s life and times and some comparison of her to later First Ladies. Will the real Mary Todd Lincoln please stand up? Dr. Blaser will give her a chance. Then you can be the judge of that “other Lincoln” in the White House.
