THE JOURNEY OF A

racing legend

Tracing Antron Brown’s journey from BMX daredevil to NHRA top fuel legend and inspirational team owner. ○ By

In the world of professional drag racing, few names shine as brightly as Antron Brown’s. From his early days in New Jersey to the pinnacle of NHRA Top Fuel Racing, Brown’s career tells a story of relentless drive, groundbreaking achievements, and a life dedicated to speed and family.

Brown’s journey into the world of racing began far from the thunderous roars of Top Fuel dragsters — on the dirt bike tracks of his hometown in Chesterfield, New Jersey. There, he entered his first race at just six years old.

“I was one of those fearless kids who did all the crazy stuff with my BMX Motorbike,” Brown shared, reflecting on his early days racing dirt bikes with his family. “I was jumping big jumps when I was young, and I never remember having any fear.”

It was then that Brown

knew he wanted to pursue a career in racing.

“When I was in elementary school, I would draw super-fast motorcycles, race cars, dragsters, and funny cars and pretend like I was driving. I would also get into my dad and uncle’s race cars and pretend to be racing them. I would move the gear shift back and forth and make the noises and everything like ‘errrrr verrroom’.”

It wasn’t long before Brown transitioned from spectator to competitor, starting his professional career in motorcycles.

“I raced motorcycles for ten years, and then I pushed myself beyond what I thought I could do,” Brown said. “I found out real quick that the thing we do as humans is hold ourselves back and think that we can’t do things when we really can do anything we put our minds to.”

Transitioning from two

wheels to four was a significant leap that led Brown from local circuits to the grand stages of the NHRA.

Brown’s career is highlighted by three Top Fuel world championships and five US National championships. Additionally, Brown was the first black driver to win a major US auto racing season championship. Overall, Antron is seventh-best in NHRA’s 70-year history.

Yet for Brown, the victories are not only personal triumphs, but also significant milestones for the sport itself.

“We are still trying to generate that history. You know what I mean? Some of my biggest accomplishments are just becoming a professional in general and then pushing beyond any boundaries I had dreamed about.”

Reflecting on his impressive career, Brown shared an unforgettable moment that marked the beginning of his journey in Top Fuel racing.

“When I got into Top Fuel, my first race out, our team qualified as number one, and on our fourth race, we won,” Brown recalled. “That was pretty unbelievable; I remember it like

yesterday. Another thing that stands out is winning my first championship in 2012. That’s like winning the Super Bowl in motorsports to me.”

Yet, beyond the trophies, it’s Brown’s approach to racing and life that truly defines his legacy. Behind the sheer exhilaration and unmatched intensity of drag racing, Brown’s life is grounded

by his family and home life. Despite the demands of a career that keeps him on the move, Brown remains a dedicated family man, often citing his wife, Billie Jo, and three children, Anson, Arianna, and Adler, as the bedrock of his success.

“When I am home, I try to be present and spend time with them. I want my family to be in an environment that each of them wants to be in. They don’t need to do what dad wants to do. I have learned over all the years to enjoy the things that my kids and family like to do and encourage them to do what they want to do.

In 2019, Brown took a significant leap, establishing AB Motorsports, headquartered in Brownsburg, and stepping into the dual role of racer and team owner.

This decision marked a new chapter in Brown’s career, bringing unique challenges and the opportunity to mentor and inspire the next generation of racers. Under his leadership, AB Motorsports made its on-track debut in 2022.

“Being a team owner, what makes it worthwhile is the people I get to do it with,” Brown said. “I have a lot of great people here with a lot of pressure on their shoulders, and they do so well with it. AB Motorsports wouldn’t be what it is today if it wasn’t for the

Photos: Lacy Clagg Photography, AB Motorsports

people here.”

Brown and his team’s technical expertise is exceptional. However, Brown emphasizes that its the team’s collaborative atmosphere and determination

that have led to their many successes.

“This is a team-oriented sport,” Brown said. “You have to be precise about everything you do. You have to be operating on all eight cylinders, and that’s the whole team, not just you individually.”

As Brown looks to the future, his focus extends beyond the immediate horizon of competition. With aspirations of expanding AB Motorsports into a multi-car team and fostering talent through a grassroots program, Brown’s vision is firmly rooted in growth, education, and cultivating racing’s future stars.

a kid growing up. All the people I look up to that are like my heroes; they gave me that time. That’s all that people have to do is give people time and truly, genuinely treat others the way you want to be treated. People always say that, but how many people really do it? You know?”

Brown’s legacy continues accelerating, racing beyond limits and into motorsports history.

“I think that the one thing I would like for people to see when they see Antron Brown… is that they see a person who is not scared to work, a person who is fearless and chasing his dream.”

At Orano Med, the fight against cancer is paramount.

In Brownsburg, something revolutionary stirs within the freshly inaugurated ATLab, an expansive and state-of-the-art facility dedicated to changing the landscape of oncology. Orano Med, a French trailblazer in the field of biotechnology, is at the forefront of this transformation, focusing its sharp intellect and resources on the battle against cancer. With a deep investment of $20 million and sprawling across 30,000 square feet, Orano Med’s newest installation is poised to

redefine cancer therapy with its pioneering lead-212 radioligand treatments.

A Leap Towards Targeted Alpha Therapy

The principal weapon in Orano Med’s arsenal is lead-212 (212Pb), a rare alpha-emitting radioisotope with formidable potential against cancer cells, marking the advent of Targeted Alpha Therapy (TAT). This innovative approach combines the precision of biological molecules in finding cancer cells with alpha emissions’ potent,

localized destructive power. The endgame? A portfolio of treatments that promises hope and a tangible method to combat various cancers more efficiently and with potentially fewer side effects than traditional therapies.

Catalyzing

a Revolution in Oncology

June 2024 saw the inauguration of ATLab Indianapolis, distinguishing it as the world’s first industrial-scale pharmaceutical facility dedicated to the craft of lead-212 radioligand therapies. Situated at 1145 E Northfield Dr.,

the opening of this laboratory is a significant leap forward, especially for patients in North America with urgent needs for innovative treatment options.

Orano Med’s stride towards an entirely chemical production process of lead-212 underlines a commitment to reliability, reduced costs, and independence from the conventional, more cumbersome methods of radioisotope production. This development heralds a new era of manufacturing and distribution for radiopharmaceuticals, addressing longstanding challenges and meeting the critical demand for these therapies on a large scale.

“We are convinced that lead-212 radioligand therapies will soon become an essential tool in the fight against cancer,” said Orano Med CEO Julien Dodet Having obtained, together with our partner RadioMedix, Breakthrough Therapy Designation (BTD) from the FDA for our most advanced drug AlphaMedix, the inauguration of ATLab Indianapolis represents another major step forward in the development, production, and distribution of these new treatments on a large scale.”

Global Impact from Brownsburg

The strategic location of ATLab Indianapolis is no coincidence. Given the half-life of lead-212, just over 10 hours, the drugs must be produced close to hospitals or located in areas with easy transportation access on a global scale. Chosen for its

Brownsburg

proximity to major national and international distribution networks, with the second-largest FedEx hub and its rapidly expanding life sciences ecosystem, Brownsburg is set to play a crucial role in meeting the global demand for these groundbreaking treatments. With a forecast to manufacture 10,000 doses annually by 2025 and ambitions to escalate production tenfold by the decade’s end, ATLab Indianapolis is gearing up to substantially impact the world stage.

ATLab Indianapolis stands as a landmark in Orano’s expansion in the US, according to Guillaume Dureau, Orano Group Senior

Executive Vice-President of Projects & Innovation R&D and Nuclear Medicine. This facility, together with the Plano, Texas research unit, positions Orano to meet the demands of North American patients needing target-specific lead-212 radiotherapy treatments.

Moreover, the new facility has fueled local job creation, adding 25 new positions in Brownsburg and reinforcing Indiana’s reputation as a hub for highly skilled talent in the life sciences sector. Tony Denhart, Executive Vice President of Talent and Workforce at the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, notes that Indiana’s

talent pipeline includes nationally ranked universities and has proven it’s ready to fill new roles, allowing companies to not only succeed but grow in Indiana.

A New Chapter in Cancer Treatment

As Orano Med, alongside its esteemed partners, paves the way for these transformative cancer therapies, the ATLab Indianapolis stands as a testament to human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of medical advancement. It’s a compelling chapter in the ongoing story of how science, commitment, and collaboration can converge to offer new hope in the fight against cancer.

Green St., Country Harmony Home and Garden is a one-of-a-kind home and garden store with a wide selection of seasonal home decor, gifts, food lines, and a revolving selection of plants provided by various local growers.

This charming and cozy store originally started as a family business in 1974 on 10th Street. By 1978, the branch had moved operations to Brownsburg, where it first opened as a gift shop in the strip mall next to Kroger. Around 1980, Country Harmony settled into its present location, additionally blooming into a thriving garden center.

“Here at Country Harmony, you can expect quality. Our staff is extensively trained to inform customers of the standards for caring for their plants,” Owner Ryan Denhart shares. “We use a lot of local growers. We push for quality over quantity.”

The garden center offers a wide selection of rare plant varieties. It is open year-round, and customers can expect to find in-season plants as well as seasonal items such as pumpkins and Christmas trees. Country Harmony also provides a diverse selection of vibrant flowers, attentive landscaping services, and lush greenery. But it doesn’t stop there. Country Harmony aims to ensure that the best plants leave the store and stay alive once they are brought home. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about all the plants and is prepared to guide anyone through plant maintenance, even those without a green thumb.

“Our staff really have to know it all to work here,” Ryan noted. “We all take turns caring for the plants, including rotating shifts for daily watering.”

Country Harmony is also a one-stop shop for all things home goods. From seasonal couch pillows to baking spices, the store offers a wide selection of seasonal decor and more. Visitors can try different cocktail mixes, smell their favoite candle scents, or try many of the different treats like chocolate or peanut brittle.

“I’m a big fan of some of the food lines that we get in,” says owner Ryan Denhart. “These items are

very fun to try and sometimes have recipes that go along with them. You can definitely get creative!”

About 78 percent of Country Harmony’s revenue is generated from out-of-town visitors. Due to the shop’s proximity to I-74, many travelers make it a habit to stop by when traveling through Brownsburg. This has made Country Harmony a destination location, drawing customers from all over the country.

“We love being able to meet all sorts of new people and connect them with quality products,” explains Ryan. “We’ll get some

customers that stop in annually because they can only find a specific product at our store.” At the core of the business, Ryan emphasizes the importance and appreciation for Country Harmony’s customers.

“We are thrilled to celebrate 50 years in business in Brownsburg, as this has been a longstanding goal for our store. We look forward to many more years of serving our customers,” Denhart shares.

EMPOWERING FUTURES

INSIDE BROWNSBURG’S BLUEPRINT FOR STUDENT SUCCESS

Arts, academics, and athletics provide Brownsburg’s students with a well-rounded education. ○

Photo: Brownsburg Community School Corporation

With a robust academic curriculum, a diverse menu of career and technical education programs, and several fine arts and sports offerings, the Brownsburg Community School District not only prepares students for college and careers but also life. Furthermore, the district boasts an impressive graduation rate of 98%, underscoring its commitment to student success.

Dr. Kat Jessup, superintendent of Brownsburg schools, says that by providing students with a holistic education, the district sets them up for success in a wide range of local careers.

EARLY CHILDHOOD SUPPORT

BCSC prepares students for academics from an early age through the Early Childhood Center (ECC). The facility is open for halfday preschool for students aged 3-5. It is dedicated to ensuring that each child has hands-on, engaging learning experiences to provide the

best foundation possible.

In addition, the ECC provides early intervention services for students who meet specific eligibility criteria for special education services per Indiana State Board of Education Special Education Rules.

“Evaluating a preschooler’s development involves understanding their ability to engage in fundamental activities,” said Dr. Katie Mitchell, Assistant Director of Special Education. “These could include adhering to basic safety rules, self-feeding, effectively communicating wants and needs, recognizing their own emotions, initiating eye contact, following two-step instructions, and maintaining focus on a story read aloud by an adult.”

A qualifying student may receive free services, including speech and language, occupational, physical, behavioral, or developmental therapy. Depending on the child’s needs, services may be provided in a small

group outpatient setting or within a preschool classroom.

STRENGTHENING THE WORKFORCE

At the Area 31 Career Center at Harris Academy, students learn through project-based instruction in a variety of pathways, such as medical assisting, cyber security, criminal justice, and pre-nursing. Area 31’s programs prepare students to enter the workforce directly or to continue their education while focusing on the priorities of businesses and industries.

Since 1983, Brownsburg High School students have had the opportunity to enroll in technical and career education classes through Area 31 at Ben Davis High School, just 10 miles east of Brownsburg.

“Our students have many opportunities through Area 31 at Ben Davis, but the program had to turn down hundreds of students each semester as there were more requests for enrollment than there was space in the program,” Jessup noted.

BCSC opened its own Area 31 satellite program in 2023 and welcomes 170 students annually from BHS, as well as neighboring schools, including Avon, Cascade, Danville, Monrovia, Mooresville, and Tri-West.

“Students can leave high school with valuable certifications that allow them to continue on to college or jump right into the workforce,” Jessup said.

LEVERAGING COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

Brownsburg Schools continues to receive significant support from community partners and the local business community. For example, Hendricks Regional Health (HRH) directs the BCSC Health Services Department, with a Health Services Supervisor facilitating the department and HRH substitute nurses caring for students in the clinics. In addition, HRH has partnered with Brownsburg Athletics for ten years to provide athletic training services.

The corporation participates in several dual-credit courses resulting from strategic partnerships between the Brownsburg Community School District and local universities, including Ball State University, Ivy Tech, Indiana UniverisityIndianapolis, Purdue University, and Vincennes University. Brownsburg High School offers 25 Advanced Placement (AP) courses in six academic disciplines. In addition, BHS students can choose from 21 different Dual Credit courses. Students who successfully complete the requirements in these classes can save thousands of dollars in college tuition as students earn transferrable college credits.

“Many BHS alumni graduate from college in less than four years, dual major or add minors in college because of the opportunities BHS provides,” Jessup said. “In addition,

students get early experience with the rigorous coursework they can expect in college,” Jessup said.

The program removes significant barriers like transportation and cost, making dual enrollment an accessible opportunity for all students.

UNLEASHING STUDENT POTENTIAL

A wide range of arts, sports, and extracurricular programs contribute to the comprehensive development of students.

Jessup says students are encouraged to join a sport or club because research shows that students learn better when they feel safe and feel like they belong.

Brownsburg High School offers 18 sports, many of which have won conference titles in the last five years. The school also has over 45 clubs for fine arts, speech and debate, and even fishing. The fine arts department is nationally recognized, with the Sound of Brownsburg bands, Show Choir, Orchestra, and Guard.

Jessup explains that these experiences provide students with valuable soft skills that local employers desire, including teamwork, time management, and service lessons.

“We’re very proud of the opportunities provided to our students by the hardworking teachers and staff,” Jessup said.

TASTE OF

INDIA

A culinary gem brings authentic Indian flavors to Brownsburg. ○ By

Nestled in a neighborhood plaza, Spice Club, at 2679 S. Green St., has quickly become a culinary gem for those seeking authentic Indian cuisine. With roots in the hospitality industry spanning over eight years, the restaurant is the product of a dedicated team eager to fill a gap in ethnic dining options on the west side of Indianapolis.

A Vision for Community

The owner, Himan Garg, a longtime Hoosier and restaurant owner, saw an opportunity to create a neighborhood hangout in Brownsburg.

“There aren’t many ethnic cuisine options in this area,” he explained. “With a growing pop-

ulation, it’s essential to serve the community.”

The choice of Brownsburg was strategic, influenced by the restaurant’s prime location bordering several neighborhoods. This allows for a relaxed atmosphere where locals can bike over for a casual meal, enjoy a drink at the bar, or sit at the outdoor patio.

What Sets

Spice

Club Apart

Spice Club stands out not only for its delicious food but also for its commitment to inclusivity. As the owner points out, the menu offers a plethora of vegan, vegetarian, and halal options, accommodating various dietary preferences.

“All of our meats are 100% halal, and we easily cater to gluten-free diets,” he added.

This focus on diverse dietary needs reflects a growing awareness of food preferences and restrictions, making Spice Club a welcoming destination for all.

Culinary Inspirations

as butter chicken and malai kofta are complemented by innovative offerings inspired by chefs from around the globe. All the food on the menu is created from scratch using premium ingredients.

The team strives to provide dishes that resonate with long-time fans of Indian cuisine and introduce newcomers to the rich flavors and variety of South Asian food. The owner emphasizes that they aim to present a twist

on traditional meals, creating a dining experience that cannot be easily replicated at home.

Also featured on the menu are Indian takes on popular American dishes, such as chicken wings in tikka marsala sauce and french fries tossed in a spicy and tangy sauce and topped with garnishes.

“We love to introduce our guests to foods they are familiar with and then get them comfortable

trying new things on our menu,” Himan noted.

Spice Club offers a full bar with an extensive drink menu in addition to their delicious food. The drink menu caters to all tastes and preferences, featuring a wide selection of classic cocktails, innovative concoctions, and a carefully curated collection of spirits from around the world. Evolving with the Community

Since its opening, Spice Club has evolved through menu adjustments based on customer feedback. Items that don’t

Looking Ahead

As Spice Club continues to build a loyal customer base, the future looks bright. Plans to expand outdoor seating and introduce seasonal menu changes are on the horizon. Owner Himan expressed optimism about their growing presence in the community, noting the joy of hearing from first-time diners who feel they’ve finally found comfort food that reminds them of home.
