THINGS TO KNOW THIS FALL

Here are five quick bites of news, reminders, and upcoming events from around Town.

Drive safely for back-to school

School is back in session! Drivers should slow down and prepare to stop when the overhead lights on a school bus are flashing yellow. Once the lights turn red and the stop arm extends, drivers are required to stop on all roads. On highways divided by a physical median, only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the school bus are required to stop.

Motor vehicles are not permitted on trails. Also prohibited are motorized cycles, bicycles propelled solely by a motor, and motorized devices such as electric unicycles and e-scooters. Exemptions are made for pedal-assist e-bikes and ADAcompliant personal mobility devices. All trail users are subject to a 15 mph speed limit.

Winterizing Your Home’s Plumbing

As winter approaches, take time to protect your home’s pipes from freezing: • Disconnect and drain garden hoses.

• Turn off and drain outdoor faucets.

• Insulate exposed pipes.

• Keep your garage door closed if your water heater or pipes are located inside.

New art mural installation

In September, a new mural will be added to the B&O Trail tunnel beneath Northfield Drive. Painted by Elizabeth Wertman of BlondeBrush, the mural will Community Newsand · feature local wildlife racing to celebrate Brownsburg’s motorsports heritage natural surroundings. Wertman also painted the first phase of the tunnel mural, which was completed last fall.

National night out event returns with new location

National Night Out, an annual community event hosted by the Brownsburg Police Department and Brownsburg Fire Territory, will be held Tuesday, October 6, from 5-7:30 p.m. This year’s event will take place at Lucas OilCommunity Indianapolis News Raceway · Park, providing more space for guests and vendors and easier access throughout the event.

Greek’s Pizzeria brings its signature handcrafted pizzas to downtown Brownsburg, featuring fresh dough, housemade sauces, and quality ingredients.

Pho 88 is welcoming guests under new management, bringing fresh energy while continuing to serve the authentic Vietnamese dishes that have made it a local favorite. The family-operated restaurant offers a menu of traditional pho, vermicelli bowls, rice plates, bánh mì sandwiches, appetizers, and refreshing beverages.

Brownsburg’s coffee scene is brewing something special with the arrival of Tempest Artisan Coffee Bar. The locally owned café introduces a third-wave coffee experience, featuring expertly crafted espresso drinks, singleorigin pour-overs, and specialty teas.

Brownsburg’s Commitment to a Greener Future

Take a walk through Brownsburg, and one thing quickly becomes clear: trees are an important part of what makes our community beautiful, healthy, and welcoming.

The Town’s Urban Forestry program, managed by the Parks Department, is dedicated to caring for and growing Brownsburg’s urban forest. From planting and maintaining trees in parks and public spaces to preserving existing canopy and educating residents, the program helps ensure future generations enjoy the many benefits trees provide.

In 2020, Brownsburg’s Urban Forestry Management Plan identified 4,426 public trees throughout the community, including trees located along streets, in parks, and along trails and greenways. The inventory documented 73 tree species, providing Town staff with valuable information to guide future planting and maintenance decisions.

Natural Resources Field Supervisor Hannah Baxendale leads the Town’s urban forestry efforts alongside a team of naturalists who care for trees throughout Brownsburg’s park system. As an ISA Certified Arborist, Baxendale is trained in tree biology, soil management, disease diagnosis, proper pruning techniques, safety, and tree risk assessment.

“Having arborists with this level of certification ensures that work is performed with a deep understanding of tree biology and best

management practices,” said Parks Director Amber Lane. “Whether they’re protecting root zones from compaction or advising on plant health care, their knowledge helps preserve and strengthen the Town’s urban forest.”

A Diverse Canopy Is a Healthy Canopy Building a diverse tree canopy is one of Brownsburg’s highest priorities. While planting more trees is important, having the right mix of trees is just as critical to creating a resilient urban forest.

Brownsburg follows nationally recognized urban forestry best practices to avoid relying too heavily on any single type of tree. This diversity helps protect the community from widespread tree loss caused by insects, diseases, and environmental stress. History has shown the importance of this approach. When the emerald ash borer spread through the region, many communities, including Brownsburg, experienced significant canopy loss.

The Right Tree in the Right Place Selecting the right tree for the right location is an important part of the Urban Forestry program.

Trees planted along roadways and in parking areas face unique challenges, including road salt, pollution, heat, compacted soils, and limited growing space.

Before planting, Town staff carefully evaluate each site, considering factors such as mature size, environmental conditions, disease

resistance, stress tolerance, and long-term maintenance needs.

After planting, Brownsburg employs a proactive tree management strategy that includes regular inspections, routine pruning, young-tree training, watering, and strategic replacement planting.

This approach helps extend the life of public trees while reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Investing in the Urban Forest Trees are an important part of Brownsburg’s public infrastructure.

Brownsburg’s public trees provide an estimated $229,000 in environmental benefits each year.

These benefits include cleaner air, reduced stormwater runoff, carbon storage, energy savings, shade, and improved quality of life for residents.

Planning for Future Growth Urban forestry extends beyond parks and public spaces. During the development review process, Parks Director Amber Lane works closely with the Development Services Department to review landscape plans for new developments.

While Town ordinances establish minimum landscaping requirements, additional recommendations may be provided regarding tree species, planting locations, site conditions, and tree protection measures.

The goal is to ensure that new growth

contributes to a stronger urban forest.

Residents Can Help Grow the Canopy Each April, the Parks Department celebrates Arbor Day with a community tree giveaway, where visitors can meet the Town’s arborist, learn about proper tree care, and participate in volunteer projects and family-friendly nature activities.

Throughout the year, the department also hosts Weed Wrangles to remove invasive plant species and support the growth of native forests. Last year, volunteers contributed 384 hours through Weed Wrangles and community tree plantings.

In the fall, the Town hosts its annual Tree Sale, offering a variety of quality tree species for residents to purchase and plant at home.

Growing for Generations With a carefully managed inventory of more than 4,400 public trees, a commitment to species diversity, and ongoing investment in maintenance and planting, Brownsburg is taking a long-term approach to protecting one of the community’s most valuable natural resources.

“Trees are one of the few investments we make today that future generations will enjoy for decades to come,” said Parks Director Amber Lane. “Every tree we plant helps create cleaner air, healthier parks, and a more beautiful Brownsburg for everyone.”

Rooted in Excellence For more than 10 years, Brownsburg has been recognized as a Tree City USA. This national designation recognizes communities that invest in planting, maintaining, and protecting public trees.

Fall Limb Collection begins in September The Town of Brownsburg provides curbside limb pickup to residents in the spring and fall. The Street Department will pick up limb piles put out at homes during the scheduled collection week.

WHEN The Street Department visits the northside (north of Main St./US 136, Autumn Glen neighborhoods) and the southside (south of Main St./US 136) on alternating weeks.

Limb piles must be placed by the curb by 6 a.m. on the week of pickup.

LIMB PILES Small branches and limbs should be placed behind the curb edge. Limb pile is limited to 8 ft. long by 6 ft. wide by 4 ft. tall. Oversized loads, including multiple piles of limbs, will not be picked up. This program is for tree material; no root balls or firewood.

ELIGIBILITY The service is offered to residents in Town limits only.

Please do not add trash, mud, grass clippings, mulch, animal waste, etc. with your leaves.

ELIGIBILITY The service is offered to residents in Town limits only. Businesses and HOAs are not eligible for the leaf collection program.

Know the Rules for Door-to-Door Solicitors

As door-to-door activity continues throughout the fall, the Town reminds residents that most commercial solicitors and salespersons are required to obtain a permit from the Town of Brownsburg before going door-to-door.

Town-issued solicitor permits authorize commercial soliciting only between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to ask to see a Townissued solicitor permit before engaging with anyone selling products or services. Political campaign workers, religious organizations, and certain nonprofit groups may be exempt from the Town’s permitting requirements.

If you prefer not to receive door-to-door solicitations, consider posting a “No Soliciting” sign at your residence. Most commercial solicitors

Election Day is November 3

Registered voters in Hendricks County can cast their ballot at designated vote centers throughout the county. On Tuesday, November 3, polls are open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Indiana. If you are in line by 6:00 p.m., you will be allowed to vote.

Registered Hendricks County voters can vote at any polling location in Hendricks County. Visit the Hendricks County website for a full list of locations.

Before heading to the polls, voters are encouraged to: • Verify their voter registration.

• Confirm their polling location.

• Review what identification is required.

• Review candidates on your ballot.

Temporary Sign Placement

The Town of Brownsburg supports everyone’s ability to share information, advertise, and communicate through signage. Temporary signs, including political and campaign signs, marketing and advertising signs, event signs, real estate signs, and other temporary signage, must be placed in appropriate locations outside of the public right-of-way.

Public Right-of-Way Guidelines Temporary signs placed in the public right-of-way may be removed without notice in accordance with Indiana law and the Brownsburg Unified Development Ordinance (Chapter 6).

The public right-of-way includes areas such as: • The space between the street and sidewalk • Around utility poles, fire hydrants, traffic lights, and street signs • Within roundabouts or street medians • The best place for your sign is behind the sidewalk or clearly within your yard.

Keeping these areas clear helps prevent blocked sight lines for drivers, ensures ADA-accessible paths remain open, and keeps fire hydrants and other utilities visible and accessible. Thank you for helping keep Brownsburg’s streets safe and clear!

Snow removal priorities

The Street Department works to keep roads safe and passable during ice and snow events. Trucks will begin plowing after 2 inches of snow has accumulated.

Preparing for a Snow Event The Street Department uses local and national weather forecasts to determine when to begin pre-treatment of town roads. When the forecast calls for snow, crews will begin anti-icing treatments on primary streets.

However, this cannot be done when rain is at the leading edge of a snow event. Rain dilutes the solution making it less effective.

How You Can Help Move cars off the street, when possible, when snow is predicted for snow plowing. Keep garbage containers, shoveled snow, and other obstacles out of the street.

Snow Removal Priorities Streets are divided into four basic categories: primary arterials, collectors, local, and courts.

The primary arterials include Green Street and Ronald Reagan Parkway, maintained by the Town of Brownsburg, and U.S. 136, which is plowed or salted by INDOT. Collector streets that provide access to work or school are the second priority for plowing and salting.

Local streets - or neighborhood through streets - are plowed and/or salted after the collector streets are cleared.

Courts and alleys are the last to be plowed and are typically some of the most difficult, given their size and obstructions.

The Street Department works to clear an entire street before moving on to the next. Depositing some snow in private driveways is unavoidable for the plow trucks when plowing town streets. Plow drivers make every effort to keep the amount of snow deposited into driveways to a minimum.

Sounds of the night hike Experience Williams Park after dark on this guided evening hike. Listen to the sounds of the night, discover the wildlife that comes alive after sunset, and explore the park from a whole new perspective. This family-friendly program is perfect for curious nature lovers of all ages.
