COMMUNITY SCHOOL

by stephanie wallace IN 1914, THE FOUNDERS of Community School had a vision for educating the next

generation. In order to create a less rigid environment and better engage students in the adventure of learning, they drafted ten guiding principles for the school to follow. Now, more than 100 years later, the independent elementary and preschool in Ladue fosters the intellectual, emotional and creative growth of students by continuing to adhere to those foundational tenets. Among them is the idea that education should “open a child’s eyes to the wonders of nature, the stars, the universe and the world around them.” Situated on 18 acres, Community School offers students several opportunities to explore the natural world. From a pond and nature trails to a one-of-kind treehouse classroom in the woods, there are a variety of environments for them to play and learn in. “Outdoor education offers students the chance for exploration, freeplay and creative expression,” senior kindergarten teacher Ellen Noel explains. “They get to exercise their imagination and problem-solving skills while taking risks, whether it’s climbing trees or working together to build something. Community School’s campus is like a backyard, and we encourage students to explore it and all nature has to offer.” Outdoor education builds into the school’s dedication to nurturing the gifts of mind, body and spirit for every child. It’s a mission that begins with even the youngest learners at Community School. Junior kindergarten teacher Lauri Torrie notes that the school’s campus is an invaluable resource for her and her students. “There’s always the opportunity for something spontaneous to happen in nature,” she says. “Students get to watch and learn about wildlife, such as observing a praying mantis or discussing how we can be respectful of toads. I had a student get his boots stuck in the mud, and the class worked together to solve the problem. Opportunities like these don’t happen inside the classroom.”

JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN TEACHER LAURI TORRIE WORKS WITH STUDENTS TO CREATE SELF-PORTRAITS.

Community School’s outdoor learning spaces are used across the curriculum. Science lessons are bolstered by hands-on experiences, P.E. classes get exercise in the fresh air, art students gather inspiration from nature and even math and language classes have outdoor sessions. Noel recalls she and her students worked together to transform a little-used patio space. “Originally, we put a rug outside to sit on and then decided to add some chairs, which the students enthusiastically worked together to build,” she says. “Adding stepping stones became a math lesson in counting, and building birdhouses sparked curiosity about different species. A small corner of the campus facilitated so many learning opportunities.” At Community School, caring about the planet becomes second nature for students. The school community is encouraged to think about sustainability and its impact on the environment. Torrie is co-leader of the sustainability committee, helping develop initiatives like snack wrapper recycling, composting for leftover food or student-led efforts to clean up trash on campus trails. “I’m impressed with our students’ dedication to leaving the world better than they found it,” she notes. “Community School’s campus offers something unique, and we take advantage of the learning and growth that can happen when you not only explore but also protect the natural world.” &

The Ritchie Boys, a free pop-up exhibit on the elite specialized intelligence team in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II, is set up in the lobby of the St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum and will remain open through Feb. 7. Approximately 20,000 soldiers trained at Camp Ritchie in northern Maryland, thus the name adopted by this remarkable unit, of whom about 2,000 were German Jewish refugees who had fled persecution only to return in support of the Allied war effort. After eight weeks of training, they were assigned to mostly American units, many landing on Normandy Beach at D-Day in June 1944 and fighting in battles to finally liberate “Fortress Europe.” But their chief role was to gather and analyze intelligence, and their knowledge of

The Blues Brothers, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd of the original Saturday Night Live cast, were legendary, known for their honest-to-goodness love of rockin’ blues music and role as bandleaders for a crack outfit that included Memphis greats like Steve Cropper on guitar and bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn, who played themselves in the 1980 Blues Brothers movie. In that comedy vehicle, the music and passion were real—some even claimed they “were on a mission from God.” It remains to be seen—and heard—whether Bill Murray & His Blood Brothers can muster the same level of reverent enthusiasm as did Belushi and Aykroyd in their day. You can decide for yourself when they storm The Factory in Chesterfield Valley for a show Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. If you’re a fan of classic Memphis musicianship, you can’t do much better than the guitar slingers and two original Blood Brothers, Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia. They are award-winners who are part of the generation carrying that tradition forward, mixing traditional blues with rock energy and strong songwriting. The X factor, of course, is comic genius Bill Murray, who is anything but predictable in performance. Can he sing? Well, could Belushi? Irrespective of his vocal chops fronting this band, which has played upwards of 50 shows since forming in January 2025, Murray will also hold forth as a comic actor, sharing stories from the road, reminiscences from his career and maybe even bringing surprise guests to the stage. The Blood Brothers are ready for anything—and their audience should be, too. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. For more on this nutty production, visit billandbloodbrothers.com.

German language and customs helped them stay under the radar. At least 45 Ritchie Boys had connections to St. Louis, and the experience of one, 1st Lt. Werner Daniels, is richly detailed in the exhibition. The Ritchie Boys interrogated Nazi POWs, and many were active in the postwar Nuremberg Trials. The museum is on the campus of the Jewish Community Center at 36 Millstone Campus Drive.

richmond heights Phil the gorilla. Raja the elephant. Kali the polar bear. Sigfried the walrus. Many metro residents know that these all are current and former residents of the Saint Louis Zoo; why, either their names or species would give them away! Accomplished illustrator Richard Bernal of Richmond Heights has delightfully rendered them in two dimensions for a recently released children’s book on the zoo, and has also rendered them in 3-D, like the walrus pictured with him in our photo. He’s working on another clay rendering, this of an eagle native to Africa. “Like Harry Potter is aimed at children, hopefully the general public will find this interesting,” Bernal says. So, add youth and adults to potential fans of his oeuvre. There may not be a flick in the future based on Bernal’s portfolio, but he’s been a freelance illustrator since 1980, and his work is worth looking at, and perhaps searching for. Dozens of his images populate the latest book from Reedy Press, The Story of the Saint Louis Zoo, by 20-year zoo veteran Carolyn Mueller Kelly. Across its 32 pages, you’ll find lush and imaginative portraits of familiar friends with fur, feathers, fins and fangs—creatures with four, six or eight legs (or none at all) live in the zoo’s varied habitats, many of which date back just after our premier (and always-free) St. Louis destination started to grow smack dab in the middle of Forest Park throughout the 20th century. He certainly aligns with the current zoo tagline as it continues to evolve, “Animals Always.” The soft-spoken Bernal is partial to critters,

and estimates he’s spent about nine workdays out of 10 on freelance projects illustrating educational children’s books geared to K-12 audiences. And he’s kept pretty busy, judging just by the volumes he could recall off the top of his head: The Ants Go Marching One by One, illustrated by Bernal, was published in hardcover in 1993 and reprinted in paperback by Scholastic Inc. in 1999. Published in the early 2000s, Brother Jerome and the Angels in the Bakery is a children’s picture book based on a story about Brother Jerome Leo, a baker who worked with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In 2003, he illustrated Jag, a 40-page children’s story—by country star LeAnn Rimes—about a young jaguar who must overcome her fear of water while learning about friendship, courage and standing up to bullying. In 2013, he illustrated Patriotic Pals: Tails of Civil War Dogs, a 32-page children’s picture book that follows two modern dogs, Chuck and Tilly, as they learn about mid-19th century-era canine mascots and heroes such as Sallie and Brutus. Personally, although much of his output is bright and whimsical, he’s particularly fond of Rembrandt, the world-famous Dutch master known for his dark, moody paintings. “They say, ‘Many are called, but few are chosen,” Bernal observes. “Rembrandt was chosen.” One might say Richard Bernal was chosen just a few centuries later for his lighthearted approach. MY DAUGHTER TESS TURNED

30 in August. She lives by herself in Chicago, travels via public transportation and walks from the train stop after dark. She is independent, and it kind of bugs me. To be honest, I don’t like that I don’t know where she is every minute of the day because, well, Chicago is a big city with big city problems. Shouldn’t I be able to track her? When Tess was in college, I asked her to add a tracking app to her cell phone; she said no. I could call her friends in case of emergency. That provided me some peace of mind, but the friend I know best recently left

Chicago so there went that peace. I asked her again. She said, “I am 30 years-old. Leave me alone.” This little exchange reminded me of an occasion when I was very glad my own parents couldn’t track me. Growing up in the ’70s my parents were never overly concerned about where I was and who I was with as long as I got home by midnight. It is one of the benefits of being the youngest of six. I never really gave them any problems, but that did not mean I didn’t get into some shenanigans. One Saturday night, my friends and I headed to Dupo, Illinois, where the drinking age was 18, to buy beer.

All was well until we realized the keys were locked in the car. We were stuck. No way any of us were going to call our parents. One of my friends suggested I call one of my brothers for help. I called Dennis, well, because I knew his number, and he was the most mischievous. I explained the situation, telling him what I needed him to do: Go to my friend’s house, lie about why he needed a second set of keys and drive over to Dupo to deliver them. It took about 40 minutes, but Dennis pulled up in his little sports car, barely slowed down, threw the keys out the window and said nothing about it.

I forgot about this little oops until my friend reminded me about it 10 years ago. I mentioned it to Dennis, and he looked me dead in the eye and said it never happened. I thought about my need for control over Tess and then about how I had successfully gotten myself out of a lot of messes. I realised where she is isn’t any of my business. I also stopped to thank God for my siblings. We never ratted on each other. So here I am at 66 knowing my 75 year-old brother will never tell on me. If you know Dennis, ask him about it. He has my back—you will get nothing from him. Peace my Peeps.

COOPERATION

EVERY DAY, we are faced with a barrage of negative news

about war, bombings, drone strikes and contentious bickering. We use so many aggressive words and metaphors in our everyday lexicon: war on drugs, war on crime, straight shooters, bombshells, knockouts, heavy hitters, in the trenches, jumping the gun, sinking ship. The words we use are important; they tell us something about who we are and what we value. Most people quote Charles Darwin’s research findings as espousing competition and survival of the fittest. Interestingly, I have read research that shows that Darwin actually believed that man’s essential nature was cooperation, not competition. Hundreds of studies over the past century have shown that collaboration and cooperative learning bring out the best in individuals and groups and that cooperation is more critical to survival than competition and struggle. Humans crave connection and interaction. Our early ancestors lived in tribes, and those who focused on being a good member of the tribe were more likely to survive and pass on their genes. In ancient times, if you were kicked out, you didn’t survive. As a result, we are wired to cooperate. We want to have close relationships. I worry about what children are absorbing from the media and the adults around them. We need to show kids different ways of handling conflict than what they are seeing in the news. They are always watching us: how parents handle disagreements, how they deal with stress and setbacks, the words used to describe situations and relationships. Adults need to be more mindful of what they focus on. Nelson Mandela offered us a good prescription: “May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.” We need to teach children peaceful conflict resolution skills. I read a fascinating story recently that described how prehistoric women did most of the drawings in caves, and there is not one drawing of war. Our culture needs a better balance of handling stress and conflict through “fight or flight” with “tend and befriend.” Women more often show appreciation for the efforts of others, seek solutions to problems through communication and are more likely to include than dominate. Mr. Rogers shared that when times were tough and scary, his mother always encouraged him to look for the helpers because they are always there. Teach your kids by your example and words to pay attention to the positives in the world and people who are contributing to peace and cooperation. Turn off the news and your devices and go out into nature and play.

WELLNESS&BEAUTY

Asked & Answered:

SENSORYOVERLOAD BY STEPHANIE WALLACE

Have you ever been in a situation where it felt like there was just too much going on? Maybe it was the thunderous sound of a concert, the overpowering smells of a perfume counter or the blinking of countless lights during the holidays. It made you feel anxious, stressed and overwhelmed, and you might not be exactly sure why. That’s sensory overload. WHAT IS SENSORY OVERLOAD? Also known as overstimulation, it occurs when the brain gets too much input at once. This can make it difficult to focus, think and stay calm. It can be triggered by input from any sense or multiple senses at once. Overstimulation is a physiological response from your sympathetic nervous system, alerting you that something is unusual or not right. WHAT ARE COMMON SOURCES OF SENSORY OVERLOAD? As the name implies, sensory overload can be triggered by many different sensations. The impact is highly individualized. What overstimulates you may have no effect on the person next to you. Sound: Loud and persistent noises like a concert or a lot of people talking at once often can make people feel overstimulated. Sight: Bright, busy or moving environments are a major source of sensory overload. Overstimulation based on sight can make it feel like you don’t know where to look or what to focus on. Flashing lights can also make you feel this way. Smell: Perfumes and cleaning supplies are two common scents that people find overpowering. Touch: A common form of touch-related sensory overload is how fabrics feel. A scratchy fabric may make you feel overstimulated, and the same is true of tight or uncomfortable clothes. Taste: The scent, texture and heat of food may make you feel sensory overload. Overstimulation can occur if you are eating something new or very spicy.

20 |

| OCTOBER 7, 2026

HOW DO YOU IDENTIFY THAT YOU ARE OVERSTIMULATED? Physical symptoms may include head and body aches, tense muscles, dizziness, shaking, a flushed face, sweating and tightness in your chest. It also will impact your mental health. If you are experiencing sensory overload, you may feel: Irritated and easily annoyed: If overstimulated, even small things that normally wouldn’t impact you, can leave you feeling aggravated and upset. Anxious: Sensory overload may make you feel restless or panicked. Unfocused: You may experience difficulties concentrating or making decisions. Your brain may feel foggy, causing you to struggle to recollect information. Emotionally drained: Overstimulation may leave you feeling drained. You might find yourself feeling more sensitive or crying more easily without fully understanding the cause.

HOW CAN YOU MANAGE SENSORY OVERLOAD? If sensory overload hits, you can take steps to calm down in the moment. Find a quiet space. Remove yourself from whatever is overstimulating you, at least temporarily. If you want to prevent sensory overload again, consider planning on periodic breaks. Do deep breathing exercises. Taking slow deep breaths can help both your mind and body relax. Limit sensory input. Try using earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones, dimming the lights and putting away your phone or other sources of distraction until you’ve calmed down. Ground yourself. Remind yourself you are safe. Sensory overload is a panic response. Reminding yourself that there is no danger can help mediate the impact.

IS OVERSTIMULATION DIFFERENT FOR KIDS? The causes of sensory overload are the same for kids as adults, but the impact can look different. Children may not have the words to explain what they’re feeling, but it will still affect how they behave. An overstimulated child might: ▪ COVER THEIR EARS AROUND NOISE ▪ BECOME OVERWHELMED IN NEW PLACES ▪ MELTDOWN IN BUSY ENVIRONMENTS ▪ SEEM MORE SENSITIVE THAN ▪ AVOID CERTAIN CLOTHING OR TEXTURES THEIR PEERS

ARE THERE WAYS TO AVOID OVERSTIMULATION? You can take steps to prevent the impact of sensory overload. Identify your triggers. Pay attention to when you feel overstimulated. This will help you determine

what causes it, so you work on addressing your reaction to specific triggers. For example, if you find yourself getting overstimulated at large concerts, you can try opting for smaller venues, choosing seats away from the stage or bringing earplugs.

Stick to routines. A regular schedule can help you avoid surprises and stress. Practice coping strategies. Knowing how to self-soothe can help you overcome sensory

overload. In the midst of overstimulation, even simple behaviors like taking a deep breath can be difficult. Practicing outside the context of being overwhelmed can better equip you to use these strategies when they’re needed most.

Seek help if needed. If you find that sensory overload happens often or you can’t control it when it happens, you may want to speak with a medical provider. It may be especially useful to meet with a therapist or other mental health provider. SOURCES: HEALTHLINE, HENRY FORD HEALTH, MAYO CLINIC

ONE PATIENT’S STORY

HOPE FOR FAMILIES BY ST E P H A N I E WA L L AC E

Emily Cullman understands firsthand how impactful receiving care at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital can be. For more than 12 years, she has worked at the hospital, first serving in the respiratory department before becoming a respiratory therapist on the transport team. “The bond you create with patients and their families is one of the main reasons I love working here,” she notes. “It’s amazing getting to know them, watching them get better and seeing them get to go home.” Cullman experienced the other side of care at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon while pregnant with her daughter, Clara. At her 20-week ultrasound, she and her husband, Paul, received unexpected news. Doctors found a bright spot on their baby’s intestine. Known as an echogenic bowel, it can be an indicator of serious health concerns, including cystic fibrosis. “I knew I was a CF carrier before the ultrasound, but I hadn’t thought much about it because neither my husband’s family nor mine has a history of the disease,” Cullman explains. “My husband got tested, and it revealed that he also is a carrier.” With her experience as a respiratory therapist, Cullman knew her daughter would be dealing with the impact of cystic fibrosis for the rest of her life. The disease affects how the body makes mucus, causing problems with breathing, digestion and growth. For newborns, the condition often means surgeries and extended stays in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The couple began working with the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon St. Louis Fetal Care Institute to help ensure Clara could experience a safe and healthy birth.

While meeting with Dr. Christopher Buchanan and their care team, the Cullmans learned about an innovative medicine for cystic fibrosis. It had greatly helped people living with the disease, and research indicated there was potential for its use during pregnancy. “We used to see a lot of CF patients in the respiratory department, but since the drug came out in 2019, we don’t as often,” Cullman says. “I told the doctors I was willing to try anything that was going to help my daughter.” The SSM Health Cardinal Glennon team helped Cullman get the treatment approved by insurance, and Clara became one of the first infants in the U.S. to receive cystic fibrosis treatment in utero. The medication worked. Clara was born without dangerous complications or needing to stay in the NICU. And how is she doing today? “Absolutely thriving,” Cullman says. “She’s in the very top weight percentile for her age. You wouldn’t even know she has cystic fibrosis.” Cullman continued to take the medication while breastfeeding, and at 6 months, Clara was approved for her own dose. As she gets older, more treatment options will become available if necessary. For Cullman, making the transition from employee to patient was a difficult one, but she felt supported by the team at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon every step of the way. “Going into appointments can be scary— you never know when you’ll learn something bad,” she says. “Everyone at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon was so reassuring and empathetic. They had multiple teams working together to make sure Clara was born healthy. They felt like family to me. As an employee, seeing the experience from the other side was extraordinary.”

THE CULLMAN FAMILY

SSM Health Cardinal Glennon relies on the support of the community to continue serving patients like the Cullman family. One of the hospital’s major fundraising initiatives is the Glennon Card, a discount shopping program. Each fall, the purchase of a $70 card unlocks a 20% discount at hundreds of retailers, eateries and attractions. This year, 100% of card sales will benefit The Devoted Fund for the construction of a new SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. The program is organized by the hospital’s foundation and the Glennon Guild, a women’s auxiliary. This year’s shopping period is Oct. 16 to 25, and more than 340 businesses are participating. Among them is Little Derby, a locally-owned children’s boutique in Ladue. For co-owner Elizabeth Barrett, the program is a natural fit. “As lifelong St. Louis residents, we’ve always been aware of the great work that SSM Health Cardinal Glennon does,” she says. “The hospital is a true pillar of our community, helping so many families across St. Louis. Participating in the Glennon Card program allows us to support a cause that directly funds critical, compassionate healthcare for children.” The Glennon Card shopping period will offer the perfect opportunity for a head start on holiday shopping. Barrett notes that Little Derby will have its seasonal clothing available, including holiday photo outfits, sibling-matching sets, festive dresses and cozy winter wear. “We can’t wait to help you gear up for the holidays!” Barrett notes. “The Glennon Card program directly changes lives in our region and demonstrates the true heart of the St. Louis community. We encourage everyone to buy their cards and explore all the wonderful participating local businesses.” & PHOTOS COURTESY OF SSM HEALTH CARDINAL GLENNON CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION

GIVING BACK Books for Newborns by stephanie wallace IN 2016, RICHARD NIX SR. FOUNDED BOOKS FOR NEWBORNS. The nonprofit was designed to help inspire a love of reading and family bonding by providing underserved families with books for newborns to age 3. Ten years later, the volunteer-led organization delivers thousands of books each year. T&S spoke with Richard Nix Jr. to learn more about his father’s vision for the organization and his hopes for its future. What is the mission of Books for Newborns? The mission is to provide children from newborn to age 3 with age-appropriate books. We want to help parents and other family members share the importance of reading. Research shows that kids who have a head start in reading tend to do better in school and beyond. In a nutshell, we provide tools to help parents jump start their child’s education. Your father founded Books for Newborns in 2016. What inspired him? Growing up as an only child, my father was immediately attracted to reading. He realized that was one of the reasons he was so successful. When he retired, he set out to give back. It was important to him to instill the importance of reading in our youngest children.

How has the organization grown in the last 10 years? Books for Newborns started as a grassroots effort, and my dad received support from so many people. Mike Hogan really stepped up to help grow the organization. The mission may not require a lot of money, but it necessitates a lot of effort. The nonprofit is 100% volunteer-based, so it really was the advocacy of my father and Mike that drove us. Now, we work with more than 40 regional partners in the St. Louis region and Illinois. This month, we’ll hit our 50,000th bookbag delivered. Has the program evolved? We also provide bookbags for older siblings. The doctors, hospitals and other organizations we partner with let us know there was a need. Another unique facet of the program is we offer bookbag options to reflect different pregnancy and delivery experiences. We’re very proud to help families better connect with the reading experience.

What do you hope for the future of Books for Newborns? We want to continue to grow our programming and expand our impact throughout Missouri and Illinois. Dolly Parton was able to do great things with her Imagination Library. With her passing, it’s more important than ever to step up when it comes to childhood literacy. Our impact may be smaller, but we want to continue getting books into families’ homes. How can people support Books for Newborns? We’re always looking for volunteers. We need people to help fill and deliver bookbags. We also rely on community support for our budget. We raise about 80% of funds at our annual Booktoberfest event, and the rest comes from generous contributions.

ART I N T H E OP EN • b y f ai th b erg er •

i

n June, I wrote about sculpture and the importance of integrating it into an art plan. Yet sculpture need not remain indoors. Outdoors, art enters a richer conversation with architecture, changing light and the natural world. A recent visit to Château La Coste, near Aix-en-Provence, brought that idea vividly to life. Across its vineyards and Provençal landscape, contemporary art and architecture unfold as a journey rather than a display. Tadao Ando’s contemplative structures possess a quiet rigor, while Louise Bourgeois’ Crouching Spider appears poised above a reflecting pool, appearing to occupy both earth and sky. Bourgeois often associated the spider with her mother, transforming an image that might seem threatening into one of intelligence, patience and care. That experience also connected directly to home. The Pulitzer Arts Foundation here in St. Louis was Ando’s first public commission in the U.S. Within its precise geometries, shifting natural light and central water court, Richard Serra’s Joe anchors the courtyard. Art and architecture do not simply coexist there; each heightens our perception of the other. This dialogue between object and setting is what makes sculpture parks so compelling. At the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Donald Judd’s concrete works stretch across the desert. Storm King Art Center in New York’s Hudson Valley transforms 500 acres of hills, meadows and woodland into an outdoor gallery. In Dallas, the Nasher Sculpture Center pairs luminous galleries with a serene garden. And here at home, Laumeier Sculpture Park offers monumental art across 94 acres of woods and lawns. Moving through these sculptural landscapes changes the way we read our own interiors. A chair becomes newly compelling for its silhouette; a light fixture, for the shadow it casts. One unexpected, artful element can shift the energy of a room and give it a layered, personal identity. The lesson is not to reproduce what we have seen, but to become more sensitive to proportion, rhythm, material and space. The same thinking applies outdoors. Begin with the view and consider how a sculpture will be discovered from a window, terrace or pathway. Allow it breathing room. Lighting should reveal form after dark without overpowering it. The best sculpture gardens never feel crowded. They balance art with space, shadow, season and surprise. Whether planning a private garden or visiting one abroad, the most successful settings remind us that landscape is more than a backdrop—it is an active collaborator. The next time you travel, seek out a sculpture park, or reserve one day each month to explore one closer to home. When we experience art, architecture and nature together, we return to our own spaces seeing them entirely differently— and that may be the greatest inspiration of all.

FAITH’S TIPS: BRINGING SCULPTURE HOME

▪ Begin with the sightline. Consider how the piece will be discovered from a window, terrace, pathway or entry. ▪ Respect scale—and negative space. Sculpture needs room to breathe. A single, beautifully placed work is often more powerful than several competing pieces. ▪ Let material respond to its surroundings. Bronze warms against foliage, stainless steel reflects light, and stone feels grounded and timeless. ▪ Think beyond traditional sculpture. A sculptural chair, bench or light fixture can become an unexpected artistic element indoors or out. ▪ Use lighting with restraint. Illuminate the form rather than flooding the entire area; shadow is part of the composition. ▪ Make sculpture part of your itinerary. Seek out sculpture parks when you travel, or take time to visit a local one. Repeated exposure sharpens the eye and renews the way we see our own surroundings. FAITH BERGER IS A ST. LOUIS-BASED ARTIST, WORKING IN ACRYLIC, MIXED MEDIUM COLLAGE, AND CO-AUTHOR OF IT’S ABOUT TIME, NO. 1 ON AMAZON IN WOMAN’S SURVIVAL. Should I sell my house now or wait until spring?

What should I do to get my home ready to sell?

Is A.I. a good tool to use when looking for real estate?

Winter typically brings fewer homes to market, which means less competition and more visibility for your property. Buyers who are searching now are often more motivated by specific timing or circumstances.

Start by decluttering, tackling minor repairs and making each room feel bright and welcoming. We can help you decide which improvements will make the strongest impression on buyers.

I find that A.I. is a good tool to find an agent who has expertise in the area you are searching for a home.

GLADYS MANION REAL ESTATE I’m ready to move, but I have a low mortgage rate. How should I weigh my options?

Is this still a good time to sell my home? Yes! Even as we head into the fall season, the inventory of available homes remains low, helping keep sale prices at the top of the market—a winning combination for sellers looking to list right now.

A low rate is valuable, but so is a home that fits your life. Consider your equity, potential monthly payment and changing needs when making your decision. 8227 MARYLAND AVE. 314.556.9150 | 314.721.4755 LEXIROSS.GLADYSMANION.COM

Are buyers reacting more to price or condition right now?

Is staging my home really necessary?

Price gets buyers through the door, but condition increasingly determines whether they act. Well-positioned homes create urgency; overpriced homes rarely overcome that with presentation.

Staging showcases a home’s best features, enhances its presentation both online and in person, and helps buyers envision the space as their own—all of which can generate stronger interest and more competitive offers.

BETHANY BUDDE-COHEN OF SQWIRES WHEN IT COMES TO LAFAYETTE SQUARE DINING, it’s impossible not to think of SqWires. Located in a renovated Victorian wire factory, the restaurant has been a cornerstone of the neighborhood since 2001, offering elevated comfort food and a welcoming atmosphere. T&S spoke to owner Bethany Budde-Cohen to learn more about SqWires, her passion for food and what’s next on her plate. Budde-Cohen was born in Belleville, Illinois. Her family moved to St. Louis, where her mother became one of the founders of the Child Grove School, before relocating to Michigan. While Budde-Cohen spent most of her formative years living elsewhere, she found herself drawn back to Missouri. “Except for one brother who stayed in Michigan, our entire family returned to the St. Louis region,” she notes. “We all just gravitated back. It’s amazing!” When it comes to food, Budde-Cohen found herself drawn to cooking from a young age. “Growing up, there were six kids in the family,” she recalls. “Our parents gave us days where we had to cook and days where we had to wash dishes. I did not want to wash dishes, so I would trade with my brothers and sisters to cook on their nights. I got my first cookbook when I was a Brownie at Christ the King. It had an amazing chili recipe that I still stick with to this day.” That interest in cooking was nurtured by her grandmother and mother, who had their own talents in the kitchen and encouraged Budde-Cohen to experiment. “I followed in their footsteps,” she adds. While attending a small liberal arts college in Michigan, Budde-Cohen got a summer job working for a commercial photographer. The position gave her insight into the world of food styling. “I really gravitated towards it,” she says. “While food styling isn’t always 100% natural, it sparked an interest in making dishes look lovely.” After moving back to St. Louis, Budde-Cohen became a hostess at Webster Grill and Cafe, where she got her first real taste for the restaurant industry. “It really just clicked with me,” she notes. “I graduated from hostess to book keeping and managing.”

BAKED FRENCH ONION MAC AND CHEESE

• 1 ½ LB. SHORT PASTA (E.G., RIGATONI) • 2 MEDIUM YELLOW ONIONS, THINLY SLICED • 1 ¼ STICKS UNSALTED BUTTER, SOFTENED • 4 TBSP. OLIVE OIL • ¼ LB. GRUYERE, GRATED • ¾ C. PARMESAN, GRATED • 1 TBSP. FRESH THYME ½ C. HEAVY CREAM • 1 LOAF FOCACCIA OR YOUR FAVORITE CRUSTY BREAD • SALT AND PEPPER, TO TASTE

F28 |

| OCTOBER 7, 2026

1. Take half a loaf of crusty bread and tear it into small chunks. Toss with 1 tbsp. olive oil and toast on a sheet pan at 350°F for 15 min. until crunchy. Let cool, then crumble finely and set aside. 2. In a large skillet over low heat, sauté the sliced onions with ½ stick of butter and 3 tbsp. olive oil. Once soft, stir in the fresh thyme and continue cooking on low heat until deep golden brown. 3. While the onions cook, prepare pasta. Drain, rinse, drizzle with a bit of olive oil and toss gently. Set aside.

Budde-Cohen took that experience to the Missouri Athletic Club, where she served as banquet manager. While the position gave her invaluable insight, she discovered the private club industry was not for her. “There were a lot of things pulling me in different directions,” she explains. “I wanted to become my own boss and answer to myself.” The solution was SqWires, her own restaurant where she could apply both her love for food and her experience with event organization. When Budde-Cohen opened SqWires her goal was to reach 10 years. Now, the restaurant is celebrating a quarter century in Lafayette Square. “It doesn’t feel like it’s been 25 years, but at the same time, it also seems like it’s been 50,” she notes. “It’s been pretty amazing to see how this place has grown and evolved.” What is the secret to SqWires longevity? Budde-Cohen says the answer is pretty simple. “It’s our amazing staff,” she explains. SqWires’ birthday is Oct. 17, but Budde-Cohen plans to celebrate early with a special event Oct. 15. Throughout the afternoon and evening, guests can enjoy cocktails and mocktails, food and live music performances. Throughout the month, Budde-Cohen also plans to partner with local nonprofits for fundraising initiatives. “We’re looking forward to celebrating with current and past employees as well as our neighbors,” she notes. SqWires also is unveiling a new lounge dedicated to musician Tom Hall, who played at the restaurant every week for years before his death. The new space will be open for the anniversary celebration. The lounge occupies the previous home of SqWires’ market, but fans of the restaurant’s pantry items and grab-and-go options need not worry. Budde-Cohen’s sister, Erin Budde, recently opened the nearby Picky Café. Not only will it be the new place to pick up SqWires items, the restaurant is serving as the cafe’s commissary kitchen, providing a daily menu of breakfast and lunch items. “My sister has been talking about doing a little cafe and market for 15 years—she’s always said it’s where she and I will retire together,” Budde-Cohen says. “Opening Picky Café has been nuts, but it’s exciting to bring another business to Lafayette Square. The neighborhood feels even more like home.” &

4. Once the onions are fully caramelized, gently stir in the cooked pasta, gruyere, parmesan (reserve 2 tbsp.), heavy cream and ½ stick of butter. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then transfer to a glass baking dish. 5. Top the pasta with the breadcrumbs and the reserved 2 tbsp. of parmesan. Bake at 350°F for 10-15 min. until the breadcrumbs are golden. 6. Serve warm alongside buttered bread.
