I can totally commiserate with this issue’s Patty Unleashed, in which Patty bemoans the fact that she can’t seem to ‘get into’ the classics. But it’s hard to be literary, as in Odyssey- and Iliad-caliber literary. People love to read, but let’s examine what they’re reading these days. For starters, I don’t know anyone who hasn’t picked up Fifty Shades of Grey. That one might be an anomaly, considering how many of my friends said they read it only to see what all the fuss was about (please insert air quotes).

And there are several detective/spy characters that are very popular, like Daniel Silva’s dashing Gabriel Allon, Martin Cruz Smith’s bumbling Arkady Renko and Carl Hiaasen’s hilarious Andrew Yancy. Please don’t ask me how I know this. The point is, once we very educated folk have finished four or six years of higher ed, we might be sick of the classics. Or maybe we’ve read most of them. OK, we just plain might be getting lazy.

After all those years of analyzing ‘the canon,’ I think we’ve earned a little latitude to veg out with pulpier fare.

Besides, there is some question about just what constitutes a worthwhile read and what doesn’t. As a two-degree English major, there was a time I wouldn’t be caught dead with a ‘bestseller’—Mrs. Todd would have thrown me out of Honors English. But I’ve evolved past that, just as the world has.

Authors don’t write like Jane Austen or Herman Melville anymore. The world is less formal, and so is its ‘literature.’

I am still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I have some of my best ideas right before I fall asleep. Unfortunately, by the time morning comes along, the ideas seem pretty ridiculous. Am I the only one who does this? What would you be if you could snap your fingers and make it happen?

My most recent idea was to become an intellectual.

I am not sure that is even a real career, but I pictured myself sitting around talking about books, quoting from the world’s greatest authors and helping students understand their meaning. I would consult with the leaders of the free world and work toward solutions to the world’s greatest problems. Dream big or go home, right? So, I decided that my first step should be to spend some time reading the true classics, like The Illiad or The Odyssey. I love to read, but since graduating from college, I have tended to steer clear of reading anything that requires contemplation or a dictionary at my side.

To get my brain in shape, I decided I would start with an author I had read before and who was a native St. Louisan. So Andy Cohen’s new book, The Andy Cohen Diaries, was quickly read and enjoyed.

Next up was The Odyssey. I found the print to be really, really tiny and even with my 3.00+ reading glasses , I couldn’t read it. So I set it aside until I could get stronger glasses and decided to read Amy Poehler’s Yes Please. You know, I think Amy is a classic comedian, so I felt like I was making a little progress. Plus, people tell me I look like a slightly older Amy Poehler.

I got stronger glasses, picked up The Odyssey once again, and this time I could see the words but decided the only Homer in my life was going to be Homer Simpson. My idea of becoming an intellectual was quashed. I still think, however, that a meeting with the world’s leaders would be very productive. I do have lots of opinions.

My next great idea was to host my own talk show.

I am very entertained by myself. I can make myself laugh—it’s a gift. Raschelle Burton, my writing partner for the Backtalk column, and I have been part of two radio programs, but alas, it has not turned into a regular on-air job. So when I heard that Kathie Lee Gifford from The Today Show would be selling her wine at a Winn-Dixie while I was in Florida, I thought that was a perfect time to pitch my idea: I could be Hoda Kotb’s back up. I waited in line, and Kathie Lee greeted me like we were old friends. She hugged me, we chatted. I have no recollection of what was said, but I am quite certain that she will not be dumping Hoda and asking me to join her as her new co-host. Another idea blown.

I know the solution to my next career move is just a night of sleep away. In the meantime, I have signed up for a writing workshop that focuses on memoirs. My life has not been all that interesting, so I hope it won’t be a problem if my memoir is fictional. Wait, maybe that’s it, I should write the next great American novel!

« St. Louis County Library’s Summer Free Lunch Program has received a Top Innovator award from the Urban Libraries Council. The program, launched last year with Operation Food Search, delivers free lunches five days a week during the summer months to children ages 2 to 18 at library branches in underserved areas. « Wells Fargo Advisors awarded STAGES St. Louis a $12,500 grant to support its Urban Arts Initiative (UAI) program. The funds will allow students to participate in summer workshops and attend STAGES’ production of Annie, Jr. next spring.

Congrats to Ursuline Academy senior Haley Stelzer-Monahan, who completed Students and Teachers as Research Scientists (STARS), a six-week intensive college-level science research program that pairs students with scientists. As a STARS graduate, the Florissant teen will receive a full-tuition scholarship to the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a funded summer research opportunity.

Excited about IKEA’s grand opening next month? You might get even

by becky mollenkamp He’d been tired and short of breath for months, but it was a painful sinus infection that finally sent Bill Greubel to the emergency room. When the doctor uttered the word leukemia, Greubel shook his head and said, “No, I’m here with a sinus infection.” It was an unbelievable diagnosis for the then 49-year-old. “I didn’t know a thing about the disease, but I was frightened,” he says. “My primary thought was how to tell my four boys their dad has cancer.” Four years later, Greubel’s cancer is in remission, thanks to aggressive chemotherapy he received at Siteman Cancer Center.

Now, Greubel is doing his part to eradicate cancer forever by riding in Pedal the Cause (PTC), a cycling fundraising event Sept. 26 and 27 at The Chesterfield Amphitheater. He is one of seven ‘featured fighters’ in PTC’s Road to Pedal campaign. Their stories are on roadtopedal.org and will air on KMOV, which is a program partner. Since 2010, PTC has donated $9.36 million toward innovative cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Presenting sponsor Edward Jones and several other funding partners cover all expenses so all donations go directly to the cause. “With the bold model of using 100 percent of public donations to fund world-class cancer research, Pedal the Cause has quickly become the gateway to curing cancer— all cancers, for everyone,” says Jay Indovino, executive director of PTC. “Everyone can join the fight against cancer—with six different ride distances, a virtual rider option, and volunteer opportunities, there is truly something for everyone.”

Creating a world without cancer is more than a slogan for Greubel—it’s a mission.

This year will be his third PTC; in his first two years, he rode 125 combined miles and raised more than $4,000. He participates, in part, to show his gratitude to Siteman Cancer Center. “From the busiest doctors to the people cleaning the rooms, each person was as nice as the next,” he says. “They aren’t obligated to have a smile or a good word, but I never found a person who was negative.

The best medicine I received there was the people. They were so encouraging.”

Above all, however, Greubel says he rides for Bill Greubel and friend Rob Berra, who introduced him to Pedal the Cause his brother, whose cancer diagnosis coincided with his own. The duo underwent treatment together, with younger brother Jim using humor to keep Greubel’s spirits up. “He would kid with everyone at Siteman about getting a family discount,” Greubel says. Sadly, Jim lost his battle just one month after Bill learned his cancer was in remission. “His disease was painful, but he was cracking jokes until a few days before he passed,” he says. “He was the glue that kept our family together. Every year when I train for Pedal the Cause, I think of Jim. It’s a time for me to focus on my brother and all the good that he brought to the world. It’s good therapy for me, and I know that what I’m doing is helping others.”

Want to see the cast of The Full Monty, the upcoming Stages show? (Sorry, they’ll all have their clothes on. Mostly.) OK … for you would-be voyeurs, there’ll be a short meet-and-greet session after the first three evening shows, Sept. 4 through 6, where you can maybe have a poster signed. Our town’s Zoe Vonder Haar is one of the female leads. But let’s admit it, theater-goers: What many people love about this fun and just a little edgy play is the beefcake. It’s like Chippendales, but with cheeky humor (no pun intended, honest). Based on the 1997 comedy film, the show depicts six unemployed steelworkers who come up with a brash way to get cash.

The setting was changed from Sheffield, England, to Buffalo, N.Y., to ‘Americanize’ the show. Stages is based in Chesterfield; the show will be staged at the Robert G. Reim Theatre in Kirkwood.

In a $1 million upgrade, Northwestern Mutual-St. Louis has gone all uptown.

Well, west of the Inner Belt, anyhow, and more central to clients throughout the metro. The Fortune 100 financial services firm has relocated its regional headquarters offices from Market Street downtown to Creve Coeur, into 25,000 square feet at 622 Emerson Road, Ste. 400.

Company officials say the room has a more efficient design that will offer the room needed for its recruiting and growth objectives. The network office oversees district offices in Glen Carbon, Illinois, and Columbia, Missouri, and recently added 25 full-time financial representatives to serve all three offices. Meanwhile, it has plans for expansion to Sunset Hills and St. Charles.

ISC Contracting provided the construction and The Lawrence Group created the interior design.

The Magic House intends to work wonders with a $20,000 grant from Monsanto Fund. It will use the grant to create Wonder Works, a permanent exhibit focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). It was inspired by a popular recent exhibit, Sid the Science Kid, based on PBS’s educational children’s series. Sid and the Super Duper stuff may have left the building, but Sid’s influence will live on … and then some. The earlychildhood learning environment will take up 2,000 square feet on two levels, with a grand opening in December. Youngsters won’t be confronted by quantum physics, but they will face age-appropriate experiences for those in second grade and younger. The exhibit will feature educational content and complementary programming that aligns with state and national standards and will promote 21st-century skills such as creativity, critical thinking and collaboration— components largely absent from endeavors such as, say, the 2016 presidential campaign.

At lower left in the triptych is a group of riverfront workers that evokes the style of 19th-century artist George Caleb Bingham, whose Luminist paintings created high drama from everyday life on the river. As luck would have it, Bingham’s work mainly languished in obscurity until it was rediscovered in the 1930s. Go figure.

Talk about snagging your 15 minutes of fame, although today it’s a little different than Andy Warhol envisioned it in the 1960s. Brittany Creech went all viral after a few tweets. The teen had most of her senior pictures shot at a Taco Bell in St. Charles. Yes, there also are dreamy shots taken in grassy areas, but she seems to be having the most fun at the restaurant, as most any high-school kid is wont to do. Brittany reportedly would like to star in a commercial for the fast-food restaurant. Hey … isn’t this sort of how ubermodel Karlie Kloss got out of Webster Groves and into NYC, the cover of Glamour, a friendship with Taylor Swift and a video for the singer’s Bad Blood pop single?

No? OK. Well, this girl is all dimples. Wouldn’t put it past her. You go, Ms. Creech. The marketing folks at Taco Bell must have noticed by now.

A long-lost image of what St. Louis was like before the turn of the 20th century now hangs in the perfect spot: Where people are always coming and going.

Commerce on the Landing, the 1942 mural by Chicago artist Louis Grell now graces the wall behind the registration desk at St. Louis Union Station Hotel by DoubleTree. A vintage steam choo-choo with distinctive smokestack and cow-catcher is in the foreground, the Eads Bridge behind it, with plumes of black smoke rising from paddle wheelers on the river.

(Way before Earth Day and the EPA, the Lou was a dirty, industrial town.) Commerce disappeared decades ago— right inside the station—but was rediscovered behind a false wall in March 2014 and painstakingly restored. Many period photos of the work in black and white show the mural on a curved surface above the ticket counter. (Why some doofus in charge way back when would have allowed it to be walled off is simply beyond us.) Commerce never did go very far, although its absence baffled art historians for decades. Today it’s close to where it first hung, near the station’s breathtaking Grand Hall, depicting the hustle and bustle on Laclede’s Landing during the Age of Steam.

If you think you’ll have trouble parking in The Loop during trolley construction, you might want to think again. A trip for dinner on a recent Sunday night was no problem, although the lanes for metered parking are mostly absent to accommodate two-way traffic east and west on Delmar. The Loop garage across from the Tivoli had plenty of spaces available at dinnertime (6:30 p.m.).

Who knew? But do drive in and around the construction area with care, as there are plenty of detours and narrow sections, and expect the DeBaliviere Bridge to be out of commission for a while. We can’t say firsthand what things are like Friday and Saturday nights, so don’t sue us if you have to scout awhile for a space, but the Sunday night we were there was a breeze.

Maybe not. The Avanti? This futuristic model actually was produced until about 2007 in Mexico. The 51st International Meeting of the Antique Studebaker Club, the Studebaker Drivers Club and the Avanti Owners Association International were here with hundreds of these amazing-looking cars, some that could have rolled right out of American Graffiti, others from 1950s or 1960s science-fiction movies. Their owners were busy in swap meets and other stuff gearheads do.

The ’50s and ’60s were the glory years for these cars, and collectors crave them. Well, at least collectors of Studebakers do.

while parents stand on the sidelines and gab. It all ends with a nice snack and hopefully a play date for the rest of the afternoon. At that age, even if your child is not athletic, it doesn’t matter; it is just the experience of being on a team. I would insist on a few practices and a game or two, especially if there aren’t that many kids on the team. Sometimes kids need to be ‘forced’ to try new things to find out what they actually do like.

Raschelle | I couldn’t disagree more. I’m a big believer in quitting, only I call it cutting your losses.

Sometimes we just know when we’ve made a bad choice, and kids tend to know what they like and don’t like—and say so clearly and quickly. Soccer is truly optional in life (sorry, soccer fans). One of the best lessons we can teach our kids is how to let go. Remember that great saying: Let go or be dragged.

Q| I am on the shy side, and so are my kids, so it has been hard for us to get involved in their school community. Do you have any suggestions on how we can become more ‘included’?

I want to help my daughter and her husband with the down payment for their first home.

What’s the smartest way for me to do so without hurting my own finances?

It’s natural for parents to want to help their children, and education and home purchases are probably the most common areas. Before giving money for a down payment, however, parents should consider the paperwork requirements and tax implications.

Mortgage lenders typically allow gifts from relatives on down payments for an owneroccupied residence (not an investment property). The simplest way to give money to your child is to write her a check. To avoid a pile of paperwork, however, you’ll need to plan ahead. The federal government requires lenders to ‘source’ funds used for down payments. To avoid extra scrutiny, your gifted (or loaned) money needs to sit in your child’s bank account for a period of time before closing.

Most mortgage lenders want to see two months of bank statements with it included.

Funds that aren’t in a child’s account long enough, or are turned over by the parent to the lender at closing, must be reviewed. The parents will need to provide a gift letter and bank statements proving where the money originated.

Before handing over down payment dollars, consult an accountant. Find out whether your cash gift can be given tax free because any tax burden will be yours, not your child’s.

Also, parents should keep in mind that once the gift is given, it’s permanent. It puts the money directly in the child’s hands to make a purchase on a house, and there’s no control left on the asset because a gift is irrevocable.

The best way to assist your children with the down payment for their home is first to offer a bit of parental financial guidance.

Have them do some homework on the various loan programs; conventional, FHA, VA and USDA require different down payments. There are myriad ways to structure mortgages, such as loan amount, affordable monthly payment, terms, rates and settlement costs.

While minimum down payment mortgages exist, keep in mind that with 20 percent down mortgages, no private mortgage insurance (PMI) is required, so the savings would be greater. It may also put the buyers into a higher sales price range, as their monthly payment will be lower.

Depending on the size, gifts are generally allowable on most loan programs. A gift letter and other documentation are required to prove the sourcing and the receipt of the gift funds. Go ahead and decide the amount you’re willing to provide your child, but don’t transfer funds until your child speaks to a mortgage expert who can explain exactly how and when to initiate the transfer process.

By doing initial research and consulting with a mortgage expert, the home buying process can be easier and more stress-free. Also, getting pre-approved for a loan will provide your child the purchasing power to make informed decisions and choose the loan that best suits their qualifications and financial goals. Interest rates are historically low, so if your gift can help move your child into a home sooner than if she saved her own money, life is good!

online dating site more for fun than anything else and found David Bernholt the first day. “It was a weird outlet for how we were supposed to find each other,” she says. “But there would have been no other way we would have met.” She wasn’t the only one who knew they would end up together. “There wasn’t any back and forth, no second guessing for either of us,” Danielle says.

After dating for almost a year, David, a resident in orthopedic surgery, asked Danielle to join him for dinner at The Chase during an orthopedic conference as a cover-up for the night’s real plans. The couple arrived at the hotel to check in, then David took her to Taylor Park, one of their favorite spots. “I thought we were just killing some time,” Danielle says. “But when we turned the corner, there were musicians playing our song, and David had made floral arrangements that he put everywhere. He hired a photographer to document the whole thing.

It was so over-the-top and wonderful!”

The two had discussed wedding plans prior to their engagement because they knew they would have to work around David’s residency schedule. “My family is really small, but his is huge, so we had to find venues that were beautiful and could accommodate a lot of people,” Danielle says. “You don’t have to do anything at the Missouri Athletic Club for it to look stunning, so it’s perfect.” Because she liked the skirt of one gown and the bodice of another, her dress will be customized to create her dream look. “The woman at Clarice’s Bridal is the Yoda of dresses,” Danielle laughs. “It was just my mom and me shopping for dresses, which was a great moment for us. We’ll go back with our friends for me to try it on as one dress for the first time.”

Danielle is a hematology/oncology nurse at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and David is a resident at Washington University at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. They both live in University City.

Sixty at Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark is not like any other restaurant in town. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with light and offer exceptional views of the city. Colorful decor and oversized seating create a vibe that’s equal parts swanky and cozy. A massive outdoor patio offers guests a bird’s-eye view of Cardinals games at Busch Stadium below. “It’s a very special venue,” says Steve O’Loughlin, president of Lodging Hospitality Management, which owns Three Sixty. “One of my favorite things, and it never gets old, is watching the elevators arrive and seeing people’s eyes open wide as they say, ‘Wow!’” LHM purchased the building in 2005 and converted the existing hotel into a Hilton. Five years later, O’Loughlin visited theWit Hotel in Chicago and fell in love with its rooftop bar. Excited to recreate the experience in St. Louis, he immediately hired theWit’s designer, Bob Amick of Atlanta, to create Three Sixty. Adding a floor to a 25-story hotel is not a small endeavor. The project cost $7.2 million, with $1 million going toward raising the elevator. The costly and tricky construction was worth it, O’Loughlin says, to make the Ballpark Hilton a showpiece in the heart of downtown. “Hotels are almost a commodity.

A Hilton, a Marriott or a Westin all are nice. This is a differentiator for our hotel, putting us off the charts.”

by becky mollenkamp The gamble paid off. Three Sixty is frequently recognized as one of the best rooftop bars in the world, an honor earned most recently in Premier Traveler. O’Loughlin credits the views, which include Kiener Plaza and Citygarden on one side, and the Mississippi River, Gateway Arch, and Old St. Louis County Courthouse on the other. “Anywhere you look is breathtaking,” he says. The most famous view, of course, is the ballpark. “It’s an experience to watch a game here. You can see it live below you or turn around and see it on our TVs. You are with a bunch of Cards fans, and it’s a fun atmosphere.”

In addition to the scenery, Three Sixty offers an upscale casual menu, created by chef Rex Hale. There are dozens of small, shareable plates made from locally sourced ingredients, and a long list of wine, local beers and craft cocktails. “It surprises a lot of people,” O’Loughlin says. “You’re in a bar atmosphere, but it’s not chicken wings and pub grub; it’s really good food.”

The rooftop venue also is known for music. There’s a house DJ year-round and periodic live performances from big-name artists like Sheryl Crow, Florida Georgia Line and Icona Pop. “Where else can you get these spectacular views, great food and great music all in one venue?” asks O’Loughlin. “When you’re up here, you realize how special our city is. It’s something we all can be proud of.”

Apronomics Stephan Schubert, River City Casino Pastry Chef

by stephanie zeilenga | photos by bill barrett When Stephan Schubert grew up wanting to be an airplane mechanic,

he probably never imagined one day he’d be named 2014 Pastry Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation. St. Louisans can sample Schubert’s creations at River City Casino & Hotel, where he’s executive pastry chef and creates all the baked goods, including breads and desserts, for the property.

Schubert didn’t always call St. Louis home. He was born in Georgia, and his parents moved the family back to their native Germany when he was a teen. That’s where he began learning his craft. “In Germany, you start an apprenticeship at age 16,” he says.

“Your parents often have a high influence on what you do. I wanted to be an airplane mechanic, but my parents didn’t agree.”

The career choice ended up being the perfect fit. From an early age, he was steeped in the pastry world, watching his pastry chef father at work. “I have a picture of me standing on a stool stirring something and making my parents breakfast,” Schubert says. “At a young age, I already liked to play around with flour and dough. I was always drawn to it.”

Before landing in Missouri, Schubert worked as a chef for Cunard Cruise Line, which brought him to exotic locales around the world. He also spent time in Las Vegas at Caesar’s Palace. The global experience taught him a lot, he says, and opened his eyes to different ways of approaching pastry. “My time on the cruise ship brought me all around the world, including to places not many people go, like the Galapagos Islands,” he says.

“It’s an eye-opener to go into different countries and work with different cultures.”

His crowning accomplishment is winning ACF Pastry Chef of the Year, but at first, he didn’t even want to compete. “It was almost a bet to the end whether or not

Raspberry Snow ■ 2 oz. white chocolate ■ ½ oz. freeze-dried raspberries ■ 1 t. tapioca dextrin

Cardamom Meringue ■ 3 large egg whites ■ ¾ c. sugar ■ 1 pinch each ground cardamom and kosher salt

Melt chocolate. Whisk cream to a soft peak.

Mix egg whites and sugar to a stiff peak. Combine chocolate and yolks. Fold in whipped cream, then add egg white mixture.

Place in mold and let cool until set.

Combine sugar and purees in a sauce pot and boil for one minute.

Melt chocolate. Add to blender with raspberries and dextrin. Mix until it creates a fine ‘snow.’

Mix egg whites and sugar until it forms a stiff peak. Add spices. Spread onto a silipad and place in dehydrator.

to serve Place chocolate mousse on a plate. Sprinkle raspberry snow on top, followed by meringue drops, a drizzle of sauce, and a scoop of ice cream.

I would do it, but my wife wanted to see me do something different,” he says. During the national competition, he had 2.5 hours to make three creations: a dessert with cherries and pistachios, 24 cookies and a 2-foot-tall showpiece reflecting the event’s theme, The Wizard of Oz. “It was a lot of pressure, both mentally and physically,” he says. “I could not come back as a loser or as a second-place winner, because I had canceled vacations to practice, and I spent a lot of time away from my family getting ready.”

Schubert now has his sights set on global domination. In October, he travels to Ecuador to compete in the Americas’ ACF Pastry Chef competition on behalf of the U.S. The theme is Greek mythology—a topic Schubert confesses he is a “geek” about.

He’s come far since his early days in his parents’ kitchen, and now he works to pay forward his good fortune by assisting aspiring pastry chefs. “I give young kids, who are not always from culinary school, a chance,” he says. One woman Schubert and his wife knew from her days at their local Blockbuster video store told him she wanted to be a pastry chef but couldn’t afford culinary school. “I gave her a chance years ago, and now she’s a full-fledged baker,” he says. “I basically replicate my apprenticeship experience—I give them one task to do over and over and try to teach them a little bit at a time.”

The long-awaited opening of a new restaurant

in the old Majestic spot has finally come to fruition.

The result: a smart-looking barbecue place run by the Wild Flower folks. The menu is small—a handful of smoky plates and sandwiches—and the spirits menu rather large. Inside, the space is all exposed brick and beautiful dark-wood floors, with a large bar dominating the entrance area and a quieter dining room adjoining.

It’s on a CWE corner, so it’s prime people-watching territory outside.

You have to love a place that has five starters under $6. Nibble to your heart’s content, but save room for some ribs. The Pickled Veggies ($3) are house-cured and a real treat with cauliflower and broccoli florets, sliced carrots and zucchini, and a dilled pickle wedge I wanted to clone—multiple times. The flavor of all was similar: vinegary and mouth-puckering. Order some cornbread to go with it ($5).

Candied Bacon ($5) is definitely a must-try, but it won’t be for everyone. It’s like having dessert before dinner, that’s how much sugar coats these meaty rashers!

You can actually see the turbinado sugar granules all over, even though they’ve been caramelized during cooking.

The bacon is thick-cut and meaty.

The dinners are either sandwiches or plates; the former come with one side, the other with two. And meats are locally sourced as much as possible, particularly the pork.

A half-slab of Pork Ribs ($18) came with a heavy rub, the meat well-darkened and the fat pretty much cooked off.

On the table are two sauces, Carolina and St. Louis-style, although you can eat these dry and they’d be just as good.

The Carolina sauce is yellow and citrus-y; the St. Louisstyle is smoky and sweet.

Pulled Pork ($13) is good, served piled on a single piece of Texas toast. The meat was smoky, with good flavor, and for the most part, lean. A side of Mac N Chz

Try all the sides, as they are a way for the ’cue chef to show his stuff. The Bourbon Baked Beans were a standout, saucy and sweet with the distinctive flavor of bourbon, which is mostly made from corn. ‘Old Glory’ Slaw also is really good, very creamy and dotted with red onion and blueberries. (Yes, I said blueberries— dried ones). The Southern Corn Bread is good, but on the dry side; you definitely need to slather it with the accompanying honey butter. Jeffry’s Potato Salad is irreproachable as the classic mayo-style cold potatoes. An order of Irish Organic Salmon ($28), the most expensive menu item, was very good: clean-tasting and mild, if a little bland.

Don’t pass on dessert, as there are several options. Our Bread Pudding was good, made with Texas toast and lots of butter and sugar. But the Lemon Cake was the real star, with its tart-sweet icing and lemon curd filling.

The magic number for the St. Louis Cardinals team chef Simon Lusky is six, or maybe eight. That’s because it will be six to eight weeks until he unveils Revel Kitchen (formerly Athlete Eats) in a new 1,200-square-foot space near Mai Lee in Brentwood. “I couldn’t ask for a better location,” says the Redbird chef, reporting how his menu will feature clean, organic and locally produced highquality products. “Healthy food is our approach, and it provides something for everyone. You can come in from the gym or in business attire and feel comfortable.”

The menu at Chaumette Winery’s Grapevine Grill will soon develop a Cajun-Creole accent, thanks to Chaumette’s newly appointed Louisiana-born executive chef, Rob Beasley. Chef Rob is bringing sous chef Chloe Miller along to assist as he continues cooking in a style he dubbed New American with Cajun-Creole-Southwest. It’s a mix Chaumette owner Hank Johnson applauds, along with Rob’s commitment to farm-to-table cuisine. The new menu rolls out in time for Labor Day weekend.

Would-be plumbers John Simon (a microbiologist) and Robert Schowengerdt (an animator) have officially kick-started their campaign to get the beer barrel rolling for their new venture, Two Plumbers Brewery + Arcade, a retro brewery-tavern concept that pairs beer, video games and pinball.

Target opening is next spring in St. Charles. Taproom plans are to feature craft beers, designer sodas and ciders, along with Pac Man, Donkey Kong and vintage pinball games. The ‘plumbers’ are using the Kickstarter website to help drive funding efforts forward. “Crowd funding will help us avoid investors, and we want our customers to dictate how we run things, not investors,” the pair say.

Just ask Joy GrdnicChristensen, whose Fountain on Locust was recently crowned the Best Ice Cream Shop in Missouri by the Foursquare app. “It was a total surprise,” reports Grdnic-Christensen, who is renowned for creating the spot’s famous ice cream martinis. The Fountain folks are set to open a distillery and bar later this year, just a block away at 3137 Locust St., called Tempest Distilling &

Coca’s Antonio Douthit-Boyd by karyn meyer

It’s exciting enough that two dancers from New York’s prestigious Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater are coming to COCA as co-artistic directors of dance, but that one of them is a COCA alum makes the news that much sweeter. Antonio Douthit-Boyd, who was raised in north St. Louis, will return home to take on his new role alongside spouse Kirven Douthit-Boyd. Town&Style spoke with Antonio about achieving his dreams, his plans to put St. Louis on the dance map and why he credits Beyoncé for his career.

T&S | How did you get started with dance?

Ad | I just kind of fell into it. My friends and I were walking around and heard music coming from this dance studio at the corner of Compton and Washington avenues, and we wanted to check it out.

The instructor almost called the cops on us, but let us stay and watch. She said if we were really serious to come back the next day.

So I did, and I never left dance after that.

A New Era

T&S | You started at COCA shortly after?

Ad | I took modern dance at that first studio for about six months, but the teacher realized I needed different instruction and knew COCA was the place for young talent. After seeing me in a jazz class, an instructor at COCA told the executive director I needed a scholarship, and they just gave me one! I danced seven days a week.

I took ballet at COCA and at Alexandra Ballet in Chesterfield, and I also took classes at my high school, Central Visual and Performing Arts School. Being exposed to so many different styles made me the versatile dancer I am today.

T&S | What made you so passionate about it from the beginning?

All I wanted to do was dance, so I found a great program at the University of North

Carolina School of the Arts where I could do both. After a year, my teacher encouraged me to go to New York and audition for companies because she said there was such a short window to perfect the craft.

I took her advice and earned a spot with a ballet company, Dance Theatre of Harlem, where I was a soloist after three years. I heard about an emergency audition at Ailey, and 12 years later, here I am. I thank Beyoncé for my career because the male dancer whose spot I filled left to go on tour with her!

Ad | When it’s time, it’s time. I was with the company for 12 years, and who doesn’t want to leave at the top? For the past 10 years, Kirven and I have been teaching and mentoring at COCA during our break in January instead of taking a vacation. It was a way to keep our brains going and our bodies physically active. After a few years, we saw the students’ progress, and we knew teaching was our next calling. We want to be able to teach dancers when we still have the capability to actually show them techniques.

T&S | What are your goals for COCA? Ad | We’ll teach, choreograph and coordinate programs, me mostly with ballet and Kirven with jazz, tap and hip-hop. Our main goal is to bring an international platform for dance to St. Louis. The city and COCA already have done an amazing job of offering dance to the community, and we want to keep the caliber of dance at COCA at a very high level. We want to offer the same quality programs here as in Chicago or New York so dancers don’t have to leave. We’re very excited. Once I left for New York, I thought St. Louis was behind me.

But I always missed it. Kirven really pushed for this, and we’re up for the challenge!

» As an u.n.c.l.e. fan, I was not going to miss

this movie. And while it has little of the panache of the original TV series, it offers some charming moments. The original was innovative in its use of droll humor. There was nothing cooler (in 1964) than a double-entendre from two guys tied to chairs fitted with dynamite. In this sense, the movie is true to the show’s roots. Future partners Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) start out as mortal enemies; after all, one’s CIA, the other is KGB. Turns out this is a prequel, the story of how they teamed up, and how Alexander Waverly of MI6 (Hugh Grant) became their leader—the acronym stands for United Network Command for Law and Enforcement. As super agents for their respective countries, they’re naturally competitive, which is one source of humor. And of course, there’s the requisite love interest, in this case an adorable East German gearhead (Alicia Vikander), and evil elements who threaten world peace (that’s why

St. Louis has a great variety of theater. There are a few big institutions that produce

their own work, including The Rep, Stages, The Muny, and a few that bring in touring productions, including the Fox and Peabody. But beyond that, we have around 25 small professional companies and more than 30 community theaters. Most of the small professional companies are so affordable, you have no reason not to try them. If you haven’t yet, make this your year to do it. And another bonus: smaller companies can get away with riskier, more interesting work.

Joe Hanrahan and David Wassilak founded The Midnight Company in 1997. It continues with Hanrahan and Sarah Whitney and produces small-cast shows that can be played almost anywhere. I recently saw St. Nicholas, a one-man show featuring the always-excellent Hanrahan as a blood-sucking theater critic, drunk on whiskey and power, who meets up with a band of vampires.

It was an excellent metaphor that played beautifully in the stone basement of Herbie’s Vintage ’72.

Hanrahan currently is being seen in One Flea Spare, produced by Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble at the Chapel through Aug. 29.

OnSite Theatre Company (established 2007) also produces theater wherever it can find the space. Its goal is to “provide St. Louis with ever-changing theatrical events where actors, audience and location play active roles in an interactive environment for a fresh, unconventional experience.”

In July it produced a “family-friendly folktale” by local playwright Nancy Bell, in SweetArt Bakery.

R-S Theatrics picks up the mantle of ‘thought-provoking’ and produces work that demands after-show parking lot discussion. Its next offering is Mr. Burns – A Post-Electric Play running Sept.

4 through 20 at the Ivory Theatre. Christina Rios has led this “small company with a big voice” since 2011.

Two companies that produce brand new work are The Players Project Theater Company and Theatre Nuevo. The former, led by Todd Schaefer, has been around for 11 years, while Theatre Nuevo (Anna Skidis, artistic director) finished its very first show earlier this month. Its next project, Orgullo: A Pride of One Acts, looks to celebrate Latino voices. Stay tuned.

[ on the marquee ] The Rep is starting off the fall with what I hope will be a bang! All the Way kicks off the Rep’s 49th season on Sept. 11. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson and the “deception, bullying and blackmail” he used to pass the Civil Rights Act and guarantee a full term in the White House.

things for parents to do is watch their child struggle. Contrary to the nursery rhyme, growing up can’t be all puppy dog tails and sugar and spice. But with the right guidance and professional advice, parents can help their kids navigate rough waters to grow up successful, confident and happy.

There are few words that parents fear more than

‘autism.’ The newest figures show that one in 68 children will be diagnosed with the disorder, more if it’s a boy. But what causes autism, and what can we do to help these youngsters? Perhaps the scariest part of the condition is how many questions we still have despite recent advances.

Experts now believe that autism is the result of genetic and environmental factors that work together, sometimes before the baby is born.

Tutoring is one of the fastest growing trends in education. School is competitive, and every parent wants to see their kids at the top of the class—in the best schools, no less.

Whether it’s help with time management or mathematics, parents are embracing the tutoring trend.

BUSINESS OR PLEASURE?

It’s no coincidence that the onset of acne coincides with puberty, when hormones ramp up.

“It’s mostly a hormonal and genetic problem that results in overactive oil (sebaceous) glands combined with follicular plugging,” Garrett explains. Other factors that can make the situation worse include environment, diet and stress. According to Dr. Joseph Muccini, a dermatologist at MidAmerica Skin, Health & Vitality Center, things like working over a greasy grill flipping burgers, using hair gel and wearing baseball caps—which describes pretty much every teenage boy—can make acne worse. Avoiding foods like chocolate, soda and greasy pizza won’t eliminate acne but can help control outbreaks, too, he says. Emotional stress and menstruation also can lead to temporary breakouts.

Hygiene practices are an obvious but often overlooked cause of acne, Muccini says. “Girls tend to have an earlier consciousness about taking better care of themselves,” he explains. “Getting a young boy to wash his face twice a day is a challenge.” However, Muccini adds the majority of acne could be dealt with by simply washing the face twice per day with a store-bought cleanser.

It’s also important to avoid picking at and squeezing pimples, as this can cause an infection and possibly lead to a cyst or nodule.

SEEK A SOLUTION

Topical medicines are the standard of care for mild acne. “At-home, over-the-counter product combinations like Proactiv, plus a daily mild cleanser, are adequate,” Garrett says. “Daily SPF 30 face lotion in the morning is important, too, because several products are sun sensitizing.” Oral antibiotics used in combination with benzoyl peroxide topical treatments are another option, Muccini notes. He also recommends “turbo-charged” drugs that have high doses of vitamin B3 combined with minerals like zinc, copper or folic acid. For women dealing with hormonal acne, oral contraceptives containing estrogen may help.

For severe acne that does not respond to anything else, Isotretinoin—commonly referred to by its former brand name, Accutane—is the gold standard, Muccini says. He jokingly refers to it as the nuclear weapon for fighting nodulocystic acne, which is characterized by inflammation, lesions and cysts. For many people with severe acne, the benefits, which include improved self-esteem and reduced scarring, outweigh the potential risks.

The Bottom Line

See a dermatologist if your child’s over-the-counter products are failing, especially if the acne is leaving any marks/scars, Garrett advises. “Most treatments are covered well by insurance, and even those without coverage have access to cost-effective prescription treatment,” she says.

“Prescription products always will have the potential to work better than OTC. All treatments usually take two to three months for the full effect and need to be used chronically to maintain the effect. No treatments work overnight.”

Tutoring has grown into at a multibillion dollar business. Children, some as young as 5 years old, are getting help with a difficult class or study habits or using it simply to gain a competitive edge. But is it necessary, or just another example of helicoptering parents?

“I think tutoring has become the ‘norm,” says Stephanie Zornes, an academic coach and special educator at Special Solutions. “St. Louis is unique because we have a large number of private schools, most with rigorous curricula. Tutoring becomes necessary in order to keep up and stay on par with peers.”

Karen Carroll, owner and president of KCI Enterprises/Sylvan Learning says tutoring is an investment that can have a lifelong impact. “How well students perform in elementary, middle and high school sets their path in motion for advanced education and success as an adult," she says. "It provides self-confidence and self-esteem.” College prep remains more important today than ever before, with more and more students going to college, she adds. “Why not give your child every advantage to feel the success of getting into their school of choice and succeeding in academics and life?”

Zornes compares working with a tutor to getting in shape with a personal trainer.

“Coaches or tutors don't get students into colleges—they help boost GPAs or improve ACT scores, which can ultimately impact where the student attends college,” she says.

“I would like to think that good coaching of study skills, study strategies and time management will carry them through college if they apply these skills.”

IT STARTS WITH HOMEWORK HELP

Most parents inquire about tutoring because their child is performing poorly in school and/or homework is a crisis at home. The demands on students are greater than ever. At many schools, kindergarteners are coming home with homework, and high school students are taking on multiple Advanced Placement college courses. Parents witness the high demands placed on their children and frequently don't think twice about hiring a tutor, Zornes says.

“Parents are busy and time-crunched," she says. "Having a coach or tutor can be a time saver with homework. And tutoring your own child can be frustrating; a tutor can take away the stress of the homework battle. Many parents tell me they really can't help their child because the homework is too difficult.”

Tutoring often is beneficial and even essential for some kids, says SLUCare pediatrician Dr. Ken Haller. “However, if a child is already doing well, tutoring may create pressure and unnecessary stress," he warns. "Bottom line, parents should have a discussion with their kids when tutoring is being considered to make sure everyone is clear about their goals. And parents need to remember that their kids need work-life balance as much as parents themselves do.”

Buyers in the luxury real estate market have come to expect kitchens with upscale appliances, posh living areas and plenty of space for entertaining—and now they want it all outdoors, too. Laura McCarthy Real Estate agents are accustomed to working with high-end properties, says agent Kathy Crane. “Buyers love a nice outdoor space,” she says. “People are using them as second living areas. They want lush landscaping, a pool and lots of privacy.”

The real estate company, founded in 1944, has more than 100 agents, and they are used to offering ‘million-dollar’ service for all homes, no matter the price tag. Having been in business for more than 70 years, the firm has intimate knowledge of the local high-end residential market, Crane says.

She says outdoor living is at the top of the ‘must-have’ list, including a fence and soft landscaping, like shrubbery and plantings, to block views and create a private escape.

“Having a large yard with all the amenities is wonderful for entertaining,” she says, which is one big reason for its popularity. “A house with a pool is where the kids and grandkids want to be! It’s a great way to keep people connected.” Crane notes that other priorities for homeowners include luxurious outdoor kitchens with bars, built-in stone fireplaces or fire pits, and a pool house, which all help keep the activity outside.

It’s also nice to have a beautiful place in which to relax. That’s what Liz Scozzafava, her husband Ralph and their two children appreciate most about their backyard at 4 Dromara Road, which is currently listed for sale with Laura McCarthy. It features a pool and beautiful landscaping on a nearly 2-acre private lot. “We had tons of pool parties, but it also was nice

for just laying out—my daughter and her friends loved doing that,” she says. Scozzafava says the pool, surrounded by Spanish tiles, is a classic style, befitting the Georgian home. “Our pool guy always told us it was in better shape than most new ones,” she says. “We had never lived in such a warm climate before moving here eight years ago, but a pool quickly became a must when we were looking for a home. It seemed every house had one!”

The family enjoyed every bit of their outdoor living space for as many months of the year as they could. “Since the summers start early in St. Louis, we really got to enjoy the pool starting mid-May,” Scozzafava says. “We added a heater in order to keep it open until the end of October.” When they hosted parties, guests flowed onto the bluestone patio in front of the pool for cocktails and conversation, and often moved to the solarium (an adjacent enclosed space with lots of large windows) for dinner or dessert. The patio offered sitting areas to encourage socializing, and the large dining table in the solarium was perfect for sit-down meals. “The solarium also has a full bath, changing room, small refrigerator, ice machine and sink, so it’s great when people are over,” Scozzafava explains.

The couple added numerous new plants and flowers in order to have blooms year-round.

“We have hydrangeas and roses around the pool in the summer, peonies in the spring,” she says. “And even though the house sits far back on the lot, we planted hedges to block the pool from street view.” According to Crane, the house offers it all: room to entertain, a gorgeous setting and plenty of privacy. “We recently enjoyed a wonderful Memorial Day with the whole family at the house,” Scozzafava says. “We really love its outdoor space.”

WHEN Noon to 11 p.m., Sept. 19 WHERE Downtown Webster Groves WHY To enjoy a day of live jazz by talented local musicians Thousands descend upon the quaint streets of Webster each September to enjoy the Old Webster Jazz & Blues Festival, a day of free live jazz

by talented local musicians. Now in its 15th year, the family-friendly event has become an annual staple for music lovers in St. Louis and neighboring areas.

The festival was born after a group of local music enthusiasts and Webster merchants decided the community’s downtown district needed a party. “Webster is a pretty artsy community—Webster U. has a great music program—so it just made sense,” says Amanda Cook, the festival’s public relations director.

Around 15,000 people show up each year to enjoy non-stop jazz from two stages and indulge in food and drink from area establishments. Attendees of all ages and backgrounds crowd in the streets shoulder-to-shoulder, and there’s always dancing close to the stages. There are even attractions for the little ones, including street performers, face-painting, juggling and balloons. “Its reputation has grown, and a lot of that is because the festival was started by people in the local music community,” Cook says. “They knew the right acts, and they stayed true to St. Louis blues and jazz and were able to find artists who are great representations of what’s going on in that genre.”

The location in Old Webster gives the festival a great atmosphere, Cook adds.

“Downtown Webster is really cute and hasn’t changed much over the century,” she says.

Both of the festival’s stages—one on Allen Avenue and one on North Gore Avenue— back up to the train tracks. “We close down the streets, trains run behind the stage and you’re surrounded by century-old buildings, so the vibe is really great.”

This year’s highlights include headliner Marquise Knox, a St. Louis-born jazz star who has performed all over the world with some of the nation’s top jazz musicians, including Grammy Award-winner B.B. King. He recorded his first album in 2009 when he was 16. “He was such a prodigy that old blues guitarists were seeking him out and wanting to play with him, because they said he carried on the blues tradition,” Cook says. Also performing is Jazz St. Louis executive director Gene Dobbs Bradford, Miss Jubilee & the Humdingers, and Webster University Jazz Ensemble.

Webster Groves identifies itself as a creative community, and the Old Webster Jazz & Blues Festival is an important piece of that, Cook says. This year, the festival won a $1,500 grant from the Regional Arts Council. “We’re getting recognized as one of the key players on the arts scene,” Cook says. “It reinforces our identity as a fun place to support the arts and a creative place to live.”

We fell in love with this 1928 Maritz & Young home the moment we set eyes on it, despite the fact that its main entrance is located on the north side of the house.

While completing the interior renovations, we gained an even greater appreciation for the home’s tight architecture, and decided to change its original footprint as little as possible.

That being said, how can we make the main entrance more inviting for guests?

As you’ll notice, the angled driveway creates a small pie-shaped yard in front of the house, while the majority of the yard loses impact on the garage side. Any additional parking you can provide also is appreciated.

I always have loved the work of Maritz &Young, and I especially like your house. I applaud your decision generally to leave well enough alone.

At the same time, the uniqueness of your house brings with it some challenges. The hidden side entry must cause confusion for the uninvited guest. My way of solving this (and giving you more parking) is to create a round drive court that basically acts as an entrance hall. A wide, stone walkway to the right mimics the left side driveway and gives a clue to find the entry. A new brick light pier, metal entry canopy and bright flowers give additional hints about the entry’s location.

The drive court’s pattern and exposed aggregate concrete give it an ornamental, terrace-like feel. Then, by centering on the façade and adding four new, round boxwood shrubs, the whole composition takes on the quality of a formal garden adjacent to a French château.

Additionally, the sides of the property have been given definition by an informal hedge of tall evergreens, while a line of shade trees at the curb frame the delightful new composition.

In the end, the architecture and the landscape are united by a romantic French language and solve a few problems at the same time. That was fun—thanks.
