We are looking forward to seeing you (from 2 metres away)!

The health and safety of our facility users and staff is our top priority. All programs, events and services will run in compliance with current Provincial and Regional Health Department guidelines and regulations. All programs and services are subject to change.

Here is what we are doing to keep everyone safe: Limited access into the building to those who are there to participate in an activity and one companion where permitted.

A greeter will be at the main doors of our facilities to ensure patrons entering are registered for an activity/permit and to conduct a health screening.

Signage, markers, arrows and alternate exits throughout the buildings to help direct users, encourage physical distancing, and maintain one-way traffic where possible.

Limited use of changerooms.

Hand sanitizer stations throughout the buildings.

Pre-registration will be required for all participation. This includes activities that were previously “drop-in” in nature such as lane swim, fitness classes, leisure skate, etc. More details are throughout this guide.

A preliminary health screening questionnaire will be required when a participant pre-registers for an activity.

Customer service counters will have plexiglass barriers.

Every person entering the facility must wear a mask as per York Region’s guidelines. Exceptions apply when participating in a physical activity.

Facility cleaning and sanitization will take place frequently, especially for high touch areas and shared equipment.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to the Spring and Summer 2021 Program Guide Our Recreation Services Division has been working hard to provide another season of robust programs and activities for all ages.

During the current COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve made changes to how we deliver recreation programming. The pandemic is a fluid situation and as I write this message Town facilities continue to be closed under the Provincial Stay-at-Home Order. Many of our programs have pivoted to online delivery, but for some programs that is not possible. As we look forward to Spring and Summer, we hope that in-person programming will be possible and staff are planning for this.

With new facility measures and safety procedures in place, when our facilities re-open, residents can feel confident knowing every effort is being taken to offer a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

In this guide, you’ll find information about community activities and programs. Are you interested in starting a new fitness routine? Or are you thinking ahead about how to keep your kids busy during the summer? Browse through this guide to check out all the options available. Town staff will be closely monitoring the state of the pandemic and will notify registrants if there are any program cancellations or modifications.

With the warmer weather here, it is also the perfect time to get outdoors and discover the many parks and trails around Town. Aurora has an amazing trail system that spans over 57 kilometres. REGISTRATION INFORMATION REGISTRATION FORMS Please complete all of the required fields on your registration form to ensure that you are placed in the correct program.

REGISTRATIONS We reserve the right to withdraw, postpone, cancel or combine classes, limit registration, or change instructors. Every effort is made to enroll you in your 1st program choice. Submission of a registration form does not guarantee acceptance in the requested program. The Community Services Department will send out confirmation of your enrollment for mailed or faxed registrations only. If you have not received the confirmation two days prior to the commencement of the program, please call 905-841-7529 or 905-726-4770 for verbal confirmation. All NSF cheques will be charged $51.00 (tax included) and will need to be replaced by cash or certified cheque.

CANCELLATIONS If a program is cancelled, you will be notified by email or telephone.

You may transfer to another program, free of charge (subject to availability), receive a full refund, or apply a credit to your account.

REFUNDS All refund requests must be made IN WRITING. Please allow 2-3 weeks for all refunds to be processed. You can withdraw/transfer from a program using e-PLAY up to 14 days prior to the start of the program. For a withdrawal/transfer less than 14 days prior to the start of the program, please email rleisure@aurora.ca.

Non-Medical Refunds Non-medical related refund requests for ALL PROGRAMS except Aquatic Leadership will only be accepted prior to the second regularly scheduled class. See Aquatic Leadership page for refund information.

Refunds Due to Medical Issues For all programs and aquatic leadership courses, there will be no administration fee for refunds due to medical reasons (proration still applies). Refunds/transfers will be processed according to the date your written request is received by our Department.

Membership Refunds Please contact the Reception Desk at 905-841-7529 for more information regarding Membership Pass refunds (special conditions apply).

DROP-IN ACTIVITIES A visit is defined as an activity within the scheduled drop-in time.

Pre-registration is required for Drop-In Activities.

WAITING LISTS If you cannot be accommodated in any of your selections, you are encouraged to add yourself to the waiting list for the program(s) of your choice. Every effort is made to accommodate program waitlists by either adding additional classes or transfering you into another available program, where possible.

TRANSFERS Transfers for swimming lessons will only be accepted prior to the second regularly scheduled class. There will be no penalty for transferring. Transfers for general programs can take place at any time, subject to availability.

DISCOUNTS When there are three or more children in the same family taking programs in the SAME PROGRAM AREA, the third and subsequent children will be charged half price. Discounts will be taken off the lower priced programs. For first time online registrations, the discount will be processed AFTER the registration and will be returned as a separate refund. This will happen automatically. For any subsequent online registrations within the SAME PROGRAM AREA, the discount will calculate automatically at time of checkout. In person registration discounts will be processed immediately. Registrations for all children must take place within the same transaction.

We regret that this does not apply to some of our Aquatic Leadership Programs, Private/Semi-Private Lessons, Special Events, or to Club Aurora Memberships or Specialty Programs.

SCHEDULES Our best effort is made to provide you with the most accurate information at the time of printing, however, schedules are subject to change. We reserve the right to cancel, amend, change, postpone or combine classes/activities that are listed in this guide. For the most up to date activity schedule, please refer to your e-PLAY account.

SAFE ARRIVAL & DEPARTURE Staff ask that parents/guardians walk their child(ren) into the program when dropping them off, and come into the room to pick them up. Please ensure the instructor is aware of your presence when you return to pick up your child. If your child is being picked up by someone else, please inform an instructor at the beginning of class.

PARTICIPANT BEHAVIOUR We want to create an environment of trust, safety and fun! Disrespectful or aggressive behaviour is not acceptable. If inappropriate behaviour occurs, a participant’s actions may lead to their removal.

PHOTOGRAPHS/VIDEOS Photographs/videos may be taken of your own family only. Permission to take photographs/videos must be granted by a Coordinator, Supervisor or program instructor prior to taking any photographs or videos. Additionally, some of our programs have a parent’s day where families can take photographs/videos (of their own family).

Underwater photography is not permitted.

Centre-Pieces: Tote-ally Creative Activities for Home In the spirit of fun, we are delighted to announce Centre-Pieces – a new program that encourages community creativity and imagination. Throughout this year, you’ll discover a seasonal collection of carefully curated packages that inspires your family to create and play. Tote bags are transformed into treasure chests of culturally-inspired projects and child-friendly art practice, giving space for openended play, storytelling and object making. In addition to supplies and printed instruction for 4 activities, each tote includes make-along virtual demonstrations with special guests.

Flowers in the Park: Sangmin Lee, Solo Exhibition Curated by Clare Bolton Sangmin Lee’s featured art installation Flowers in the Park continues to evolve and additional new works are added to this, not to be missed, contemporary solo exhibition. Son of Korean immigrants, Lee was raised in the densest high-rise community in Canada, St. James Town (Toronto). As one of the most ethnically rich neighbourhoods in North America, Lee takes inspiration from this “world within a block” and creates large mixed-media installations describing non-linear stories about integration, displacement and cultural survival.

Spring Educational Classes & Workshops For Children, Youth & Adults We are sketching out fun and educational arts experiences for you and your family this Spring!

We’re making plans for both in-person, and virtual arts classes to ignite your creativity this Spring. If possible, we will offer small, in-person classes and workshops with safety protocols vetted by York Region Public Health. Should our programs continue in the virtual space, we will offer a blend of pre-recorded video tutorials and lively interactive online sessions. No matter which format, students will continue to develop skills and pursue artistic passions. Join us from the comfort of your home and stay engaged this Spring Break creating art, playing games, and getting up on your feet to move around in this week-long half-day virtual camp. Young artists will draw, paint, and sketch while using a variety of art techniques, tools, and materials. Parental guidance is welcome, but not required.

If you’re looking for a full-day option: You may choose to register your child in both the morning and afternoon sessions. Please note that the schedule of activities of both sessions will be the same, however our instructor can alter the content for your child if they are registered in both the morning and afternoon.

Summer Camps Summer camps fun is in the air – whether in person, or online. Lively themed arts camp weeks for children ages 4 – 12, and dynamic camp counsellors with plenty of instructional experience both in-person, and online.

H.I.I.T. – HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING Maximize calorie loss, improve your endurance and strength, all in one class. This interval-based class is a complete workout, encompassing high-intensity cardio bursts with full-body strength training exercises. Suitable for all ages and modifications for all fitness levels will be provided.

LOW IMPACT

This fitness program includes a warm-up, a cardiovascular and muscle conditioning component and a relaxing cool down.

BOOMER ABC’S

This class uses weight-bearing activities with light weight training to improve and maintain your bone density and fitness level.

BOOT CAMP

Yoga Fitness is a fitness inspired yoga program designed to improve health, performance and mental acuity. Based on the fusion of eastern traditional Hatha Yoga and western fitness science, this class blends balance, strength, flexibility and power in a fitness format.

YOGA STRETCH

Improve your overall flexibility, relieve the day’s stress and feel relaxed. This class focuses on basic stretching techniques and does not specifically follow the Hatha, Ashtanga, Iyengar or Vinyasa principles.

FITNESS INCLUSION SERVICES Arthritis Aquafit: Club Aurora offers a 45-minute specialty class for people who suffer from arthritis.

The objectives of these recreational exercises are to reduce pain, help maintain or increase joint mobility, and increase muscular strength and endurance.

Heart Wise Exercise: This initiative is intended to integrate the cardiac population into mainstream programs by addressing their physical and psychological needs. It provides exercise options to help participants choose appropriate programs and levels of intensities, while encouraging participants to do daily physical activities.

T.I.M.E.: Developed by the Toronto Rehab Centre for those who have suffered a stroke, are experiencing some neurological muscular difficulties, have MS or have suffered a brain injury. It works to improve balance and coordination to allow you to live as independently and confidently as possible. Note: Participants should be able to walk 10 metres with or without a walking aid.

The Town of Aurora welcomes and encourages residents of all abilities to have equitable and meaningful access to recreation opportunities. This is accomplished through specialized programming, individualized support options and accessible facilities for patrons with disabilities or unique needs.

Service animals are welcome at all Town owned and operated facilities.

INTEGRATED OPPORTUNITIES

Participants require additional support if: • They have extra support at school or at home; • A physical, medical, or developmental/learning disability exists that affects the safety of others; • Extra support is required at home for basic care such as dressing and toileting; • The individual is currently associated with a support agency or program; or • There are challenging behaviours to be managed.

Additional Support Participants with disabilities and unique needs are encouraged to take part in year-round recreation programs that suit their interests and hobbies. If assistance is required outside of the typical staff to participant ratio, individuals have the following options: • 1:1 Town Support Staff - Inclusion 1:1 support staff are available to facilitate participation in all Town of Aurora recreation programs. A support staff comes at an additional cost, and may provide redirection for safety reasons, allow opportunities for sensory or emotional breaks, and assist with personal care provided that it can be facilitated by one person. Upon request, the Town of Aurora will do their best to arrange a 1:1 support staff for a participant based on availability and resources, however this is never guaranteed. It is encouraged that families reach out to Inclusion Services at least two weeks prior to the program start to ensure a 1:1 support staff can be arranged.

• External Support Workers - The Town of Aurora welcomes external personal support workers into all our programs and drop-ins at no additional registration costs. An external support worker can include a parent, family member, or paid external staff member at the expense of the family.

ADAPTED OPPORTUNITIES The Town of Aurora offers specialized programs specifically designed for participants with special needs. These adapted programs have smaller staff to participant ratios, modified instruction, and an overall more sensory aware environment.

PARKS & TRAILS PEDESTRIAN TRAIL SYSTEM The Town of Aurora is fortunate to have an extensive pedestrian trail system which connects many of its neighbourhood parks, Town facilities and open space corridors. Presently the Town maintains approximately 62 kilometers of trails.

Come out and enjoy a leisurely hike through the natural valley land setting of mixed forests, meadows and wetland habitats of the Holland River Valley Trail. This trail is Aurora’s longest trail corridor stretching from Vandorf in the south (just west of Bayview Avenue) all the way up to St. John’s Sideroad at Industrial Parkway North. The trail corridor links municipal facilities such as the Town Hall, the Senior’s Centre and the Aurora Family Leisure Complex as well as the Aurora Community Arborteum, Sheppard’s Bush and Lambert Willson Park.

Another significant trail corridor is the Willow Farm, Lakeview Trail system; a trail linking parks and linear open space corridors within the forested hills of St. Andrews in northwest Aurora. The topography is very undulating as the trail rises up to one of the highest points of elevation within Aurora.

All Aurora trails are considered multi-use, with the primary focus being pedestrian hikers. Opportunities also exist for cross country skiers. The majority of our trails are compact gravel surfaces with some asphalt sections through neighbourhood and community parks.

Please note that our trails are not groomed or maintained during winter months, and conditions vary widely. Surface conditions can change dramatically during the winter to create potentially hazardous hiking and skiing conditions. All users are advised to respect other trail users, to stay on designated trails and to exercise caution at all times.

COMMUNITY PARKS & SPORTS FACILITIES The town currently has over 75 parks and open space areas including 44 playgrounds encompassing over 700 acres, 3 children’s water-play splash pads, 35 soccer fields, 18 ball diamonds and a wide variety of other recreational activities. Full details at www.aurora.ca/parksandtrails DAVID TOMLINSON NATURE RESERVE (WILDLIFE PARK) On October 23, 2020 Town Council unveiled a new trail sign and officially re-named the Wildlife Park as the “David Tomlinson Nature Reserve” in honour of David Tomlinson who has been instrumental in the protection and creation of the nature reserve.

November 2020 marked the completion of phase 1 of the work within the Nature Reserve. Phase 1 work includes a trail system extending from the Stronach Aurora Recreation Centre (SARC) on Wellington Street E up to Johnathan Bales Parkette on Hartwell Way, including several boardwalks and viewing platforms overlooking the ponds and wetlands.

Park users should note that much of the nature reserve contains environmentally sensitive areas and habitat for many species of flora and fauna, and the intent is to restrict pedestrian access to these areas to allow nature to flourish. We request that park users stay on the trails and respect the truly unique features that are contained within

the nature reserve. Viewing platforms have been provided at two critical locations and have been designed to screen pedestrians from wildlife that would otherwise be startled should pedestrians remain in plain view. Additional native trees and shrubs will be planted over the next few years to help buffer pedestrian activity from environmentally sensitive areas.

Phase 2 work within the David Tomlinson Nature Reserve is currently being designed and will include several constructed wetlands as well as additional trails and viewing platforms.
