Welcome to the 2016 Town of Aurora Winter Parks & Recreation Services Program Guide!

Winter is a fun and exciting season filled with toboggans, sleds, snow forts and outdoor ice skating. I encourage all residents to venture outside and participate in outdoor activities as part of an ongoing effort to promote healthy living.

Inside this guide, you will find a variety of affordable recreation activities for all ages. Whether you are enjoying the winter outdoors or taking courses such as ballroom dancing or guitar lessons, there is something that appeals to everyone.

I hope that you and your families attend the many local events our Town offers throughout the year. Our winter events inspire excitement and community fellowship, so don’t miss out on the fun!

Looking forward, the Parks and Recreation department is developing a Sport Mayor Geoffrey Dawe Plan and updating the Parks & Recreation Master Plan. With input from our residents, key stakeholders and various user groups, these plans will help the Town establish appropriate service levels over the next five years and create a plan to continue delivering quality sports programs.

Just because it’s Winter, doesn’t mean you have to hibernate! Try one of our NEW fitness classes such as Balance Basics, Rebounder classes, POUND, TRX & BOSU Bootcamp and more. If organized classes don’t interest you, remember that our walking/jogging track is open at the Aurora Family Leisure Complex (AFLC) during facility operating hours and it’s always FREE! Club Aurora offers you, your family and friends exceptional value with high quality equipment, certified staff, and fun and energetic programs in a comfortable and clean facility. The Centre is accredited with the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology (CSEP). Our highly specialized staff are available to offer you guidance and personalized training resulting in a quality fitness experience.

We are also excited to let you know that the Town of Aurora aims to be recognized as a “Youth Friendly Community” and has recently committed to an organizational effort to direct its focus on assessing the needs of adolescent Youth living in our community.

The Town will evaluate its play opportunities against 16 criteria outlined by Play Works Partnership. The assessment will include all play-based activities surrounding: recreation, sport, leisure, arts, drama, dance, civic engagement, youth activism, volunteerism, social clubs and youth leadership. We will be looking to account for all play-based activities delivered by the Town, not-for-profit agencies, faith-based providers, private businesses, self-directed groups, etc.

If successful, the Town of Aurora will join other communities in Ontario, on the cutting-edge of Youth engagement and community inclusivity. This is an opportunity for the whole community to ensure the needs of Youth are being met. Any Youth that wish to be involved can play an important role with the Town of Aurora; be it as a member of our Youth Engagement Committee, or just a phone call, we need to hear from you. Laying the foundation for an active life! Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) Aurora is a local initiative that seeks to improve the quality of sport and physical activity in Aurora by increasing opportunities for sport and recreation participation.

Aurora will be implementing physical literacy in sport and recreation activity which is the foundation for lifelong participation, and strengthening the community sport and recreation sector by building capacity.

DEVEloPING PhYSICAl lITERACY

Just as learning the alphabet is necessary to read, the development of basic movement skills and sport skills is critical to help children feel confident participating in physical activity. The most important step toward developing physical literacy is mastering fundamental movement skills. (FMS) Physical Literacy = Competent and Confidence • Physical Literacy = Active for life

Active Start (ages 0 – 6) Children need to be introduced to unstructured active play that incorporates a variety of body movement. Children this age experience a large variety of basic movement – like running, jumping and throwing. Look for these Active Start programs:

learn to Train (ages 9 – 12) Children in the Learn to Train stage are ready to begin structured physical activity and sport activities. However, the emphasis should still be on general sports skills suitable to a number of activities. Try these Learn to Train programs:

All requests for refunds must be made IN WRITING. Non-medical related cancellations for AQUATICS will only be accepted prior to the second regularly scheduled class.

Participants receive a full refund less a $20.00 administration fee, when cancelling before the class starts. Participants receive a refund, on a prorated basis, less a $20.00 administration fee for all other refund requests. There will be no administration fee for refunds due to medical reasons (pro-ration still applies). A medical note must accompany the refund request. Please note that refunds or transfers will be processed according to the date your written request is received by our Department. Please allow 3-5 weeks for all refunds to be processed.

Our registration form has been designed to allow more than one participant per family to register for programs on the same form.

Please complete all of the required information to ensure that you are placed in the correct program.

Please note that you can not withdraw from a program using e-PLAY. Transfers will only be accepted prior to the second regularly scheduled class. There will be no penalty for transferring.

Discounts

We reserve the right to withdraw, postpone, cancel or combine

classes, limit registration, or change instructors. Every effort is

made to enroll you in your first program choice, and to ensure

that your recreation experience meets and/or exceeds your

expectations. Submission of a registration does not guarantee

acceptance in the requested program. The Parks and Recreation

Services Department will send out confirmation of your

enrollment. If you have not received the confirmation two days

prior to the commencement of the program, please call (905)

841-7529 or (905) 726-4770 for verbal confirmation.

Where there are three or more children in the same family taking part in the SAME PROGRAM AREA, the third and subsequent child will be charged half price. Discounts will be taken off the lower priced program.

New Flexible Option!

This NEW program is mandatory for those 12-13 years old who wish to obtain a fitness membership at Club Aurora.

You will learn from one of our certified fitness staff safe exercise techniques and the proper use of our fitness equipment.

An educational component with a different discussion topic will begin each session followed by an equipment demonstration and a mini workout session. An individual exercise program is created and fully demonstrated.

Participants MUST complete 4 one-hour training sessions to qualify. All training sessions are booked exclusively in the fitness centre through the fitness staff.

Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion and a 1 month extension on any length fitness memebership purchased upon the successful completion of the program.

AQuATiCS RuLeS & ReNTALS GENERAL POOL RULES • Disposable and cloth diapers are not permitted in the water. Please use swim diapers designed for pool use.

• Individuals with a serious medical condition should be accompanied in the water with anoth­ er individual knowledgeable of their condition and inform the Lifeguard.

• Those with open sores or communicable diseases will not be admitted to swimming pools unless a medical doctor’s certificate is present­ ed to the pool supervisor.

• Spectators are required to view lessons from the “designated” viewing galleries only.

• Please do not bring food and/or beverages onto pool decks or viewing galleries, water only contained in plastic or non-breakable bottles.

• Outdoor Shoes must be removed before entering the shower and pool area.

CHANGE ROOM POLICIES • Families of any age, of the same gender are encouraged to use the gender specific change rooms.

• Mixed gender families, unaccompanied children and persons with identified special needs and their caregivers are encouraged to use the family/special needs change room.

• Parents/guardians accompaning children of the opposite gender, age 6 yrs+ are encouraged to change in separate cubicles.

We ask that all patrons cooperate in making the change room experience comfortable for everyone.

What to Expect from Swimming Lessons

Support your child’s learning through participation in the recreational swimming programs. Set realistic goals for your child, encouraging them to do their best. Learning to swim can be enjoyable, but like many skills, it takes time, practise and patience.

It is important to remember that each swimmer advances at his/ her own pace. Not completing a level the first time, or even the second time, simply means there are important skills to continue to improve upon. Success in swimming lessons comes in many different forms – learning new skills, increasing confidence, and gaining a feeling of accomplishment.

What Level Should I Register In?

Visit our pool and one of the Aquatic Staff can assist you in determining what level to register in. The Department of Parks and Recreation offers free swimming lesson assessments. Please contact the Deck Supervisor on duty to request a screening during scheduled leisure swim times.

Repeating a level?

Show your last report card to the Instructor to allow practise time on skills requiring development. To progress to the next level, all items must be completed.

Lesson Start Time

Participants should go to the pool deck at the lesson start time (not earlier). You may wish to escort your child to their lesson on the first day to meet the Instructor. Please remove outdoor shoes in the shower area and pool deck.

Deck Supervisor

There is a designated Deck Supervisor on deck and available to answer your questions or concerns. They also provide a link between you and the instructor. Ask and the Deck Supervisor will be happy to assist you.

Parent’s Day

Parent’s Day will take place during the 5th lesson. Parents are invited on deck to watch their child’s swimming lesson and take pictures. Classes will end 5 min. early to give parents the opportunity to talk to their child’s instructor about their progress. If you wish to visit on deck, please remember to remove your shoes!

Please note that picture taking is only permitted on Parent’s Day.

Make-up Lessons

Occasionally lessons may be cancelled due to pool fouling, mechanical, or chemical problems. Makeup classes due to participant’s illness or personal commitments will not be available. Dry-land water safety lessons are part of all learn-to­ swim programs. Where a pool may close in an untimely manner, Instructors will use the time to focus on dry land water safety. If this is not possible, a credit may be issued for the missed class.

Pool Fouling/Closure

To reduce the number of closures due to pool fouling, participants not toilet trained are required to wear snug fitting plastic pants.

No disposable diapers. Also, please keep eating to a minimum prior to swimming. Swim diapers are available at the Customer Service Desk.

Change Room Admittance Guideline

For the comfort of all patrons, children 7 years of age and older must use the appropriate change room of their own gender. If this is not suitable a family change room is available.

Personal Belongings

Do not leave valuables and belongings unattended in change rooms or cubicles. Use lockers or take belongings to your program area. The Town of Aurora is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Cell phones, Filming and Photography

Please note that to ensure the privacy of others, the use of cell phone devices, filming or photography will not be permitted in the change rooms, viewing gallery or pool area during swimming programs or recreational swims.

Stroller

Strollers are not permitted on the pool deck or in the shower area.

Please use the designated stroller parking area located in the family change room.

Family Change Room

The family change room is for mixed gender families, unaccompanied children and persons with identified special needs and their caregiver. Everyone else is encouraged to use the gender specific change rooms.

Aquatic leadership Refund Policy All aquatic leadership courses require 100 percent attendance. Late admission cannot be granted. For this reason, cancellation requests must be submitted a minimum of five (5) business days prior to the start of the first class in order to receive a refund. 1. Skill Evaluation

Candidates are required to attend a 6 hour skill and stroke evaluation session, equivalent to the Red Cross Swim Kids 10 performance criteria . Instructor Emergency Response (IERs) will also be evaluated at this time.

2. Online Modules

This on line learning allows the learner to learn at his or her own speed-focusing on what is important and how it connects to them . The multiple self-directed online modules w ill require approximately a total of 14-20 hours of time to complete.

3. Teaching Experience

Candidates are required to complete a minimum of 8 hours following the on line learning, and prior to the in-person component. Candidates will have a frame of reference to reflect on and link to the theory of the course.

4. Classroom and Pool

This 21 hour component follows the teaching experience and furthers instructional ability by focusing on how to effectively plan, teach and evaluate the Red Cross Swim programs. Here the candidates will complete a variety of practice teaching exercises.

5. Certification

Upon completion of all the above requirements, candidates will be certified as a Water Safety Instructor for a period of 1 year.

6. 3 Online Modules

In order to extend the 1 year certification to 2 years, candidates must complete an additional 3 on line modules, within 1 year.

This workshop does not guarantee, but rather prepares the potential volunteer for a place­ ment. The workshop will prepare the volunteer with knowledge about the Town of Aurora, the department’s program policies, roles, responsibili­ ties and expectations. There is no cost to register.

PRe-SCHooL PRoGRAMS

A CHiLD’S VieW

(Ages 3 to 5 years) This recreation program is an excellent opportunity for children to learn socialization, independence and creative skills through play and hands-on activities. The children will participate in different themes each week which may encompass working with the alphabet, numbers, shapes, colour, sizes and much more. Our experienced ECE qualified staff, at a ratio of 1:8 will have the children begin the day participating in a circle environment then moving on from station to station at their own pace. You will need to provide your child with a nutritious snack each day as well as indoor play shoes. Your child must be fully toilet trained. Staff will phone registered participants with orientation details. Orientation for registered participants is: Wednesday January 6th at 10:00a.m. at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex. *In preparation for full day Kindergarten children now have an opportunity to join us for a full day. This program combines creative movement with the basic components of ballet and jazz. The young dancers will have the opportunity to develop grace and creativity, while having fun and allowing their personalities to flourish. Children will showcase their ‘twinkling toes’ for family and friends in a final performance featuring the music from a popular children’s movie such as beauty and the beast, Peter Pan, Cinderella, Hercules and Tangled! The only experience needed is knowing how to have fun and having a love for dance. Costumes and all materials will be provided. (Ages 4 to 5 years) What a great Canadian Tradition - might as well start your little one off right. This instructional program concentrates on skating, skills and development, however, it is NOT a learn to skate program. With our coaches, your little ones will build the confidence they need to skate all around the ice. Full equipment is mandatory, including a CSA approved hockey helmet. A bicycle helmet is not acceptable.

Children will enjoy sing-a-longs, rhythm echoes and instrument play as they are introduced to musical skills such as tempo, dynamic, musical notation and solfege (do-re­ mi). The musical maestros will mesmerize their family and friends with a showcase of their new skills and favourite songs on the final day of classes! An imaginative environment filled with the perfect harmony of acting, movement, singing and hands-on activities engages children in learning and allows them to explore music concepts while building concentration, self-expression and confidence.

The children will showcase a collection of show-stopping numbers as they present their 30 minute musical chosen from a collection of popular family musicals such as Annie, Aladdin, Cinderella, Willy Wonka, Peter Pan and many, many more in a final performance that is sure to get the audience up on its feet!

THeATRe - MuNSCH FoR MuNCHKiNS

(Ages 5 to 7 years) Children have fun and gain confidence through the unique, fun and creative methods developed by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. Laughter and applause are guaranteed when the children perform one of the many, zany Robert Munsch stories such as Mortimer, stephanie’s Ponytail or Thomas’ snowsuit for parents and friends on the last class. The program, taught by theatre professionals, also features movement, music, theatre games, production crafts and basic acting instruction.

Costumes and all materials are included.

Aurora Municipal Basketball League

Players in this league will practice one night per week then have a game against another team each Saturday. Emphasis is placed on learning basic basketball skills, teamwork, and having “FUN� in an encouraging environment. Each player will receive an award at the end of the season. Schedules will be handed out during the first week of the program and will also be made available on the league website. *New players will be required to purchase a reversible jersey for $30. This course will introduce students to the unique “forgiving” qualities of acrylic paint and allow them to experiment with a variety of techniques. Start at the very beginning and learn about choosing paints and painting surfaces and how to make the most of your paint and brushes as you work. A gentle form of exercise from China consisting of Qi-Gong movements to improve balance and breathing and help maintain a better range of motion. The popular short form of Tai Chi known as the 24 step short form will be introduced.

PAiNTiNG AND SKeTCHiNG (beGiNNeR) If you have always wanted to learn how to handle a paint brush or a pencil here is your chance. This is a beginner’s class, no experience necessary. Watercolour is the main focus of the program, but drawing in any media is also encouraged.

pFiT

pFIT is a group strength training program that incorporates the clinically-proven p44 Stepper portable resistance device that is specially designed for older adults to be used from a chair. pFIT is a fun, social and safe way to increase lower body strength, improve range of motion, maintain balance and tone up muscles. The innovative p44 Stepper allows each leg to work on its own separate pace and resistance level and digitally monitors strength improvement with a hard copy print out for each participant. Class size is limited to 8 participants.

RebouNDiNG

Remember the joy of jumping on a backyard trampoline? Using a mini-trampoline (or rebounder as they are also called), is one of the best forms of exercise for seniors known today. Rebounding is a unique low-impact form of exercise that provides all of the healthful benefits of traditional exercise, but without the stress on joints and muscles that can sometimes make traditional exercising uncomfortable. All rebounders will be equipped with a stability bar for additional support.

PEDESTRIAN TRAIl SYSTEM

The Town of Aurora is fortunate to have an extensive pedestrian trail system which connects many of its neighbourhood parks, Town Facilities and open space corridors. At present the Town maintains approximately 25 kilometers of trails.

Come out and enjoy a leisurely hike through the natural valley land setting of mixed forests, meadows and wetland habitats of the Holland River Valley Trail, designated in 2000 as part of the regional Nokiidaa Trail. This trail is Aurora’s longest trail corridor stretching from Vandorf in the south (just west of Bayview Avenue) all the way up to St. John’s Sideroad at Industrial Parkway North. The trail corridor links municipal facilities such as the Town Hall, the Senior’s Centre and the Aurora Leisure Complex as well as the Aurora Community Arborteum, Sheppards Bush and Lambert Willson Park.

Another significant trail corridor is the Willow Farm, Lakeview Trail system, a trail linking parks and linear open space corridors within the forested hills of St. Andrews in northwest Aurora. The topography is very undulating as the trail rises up to one of the highest points elevation within Aurora.

All Aurora trails are considered multi-use, with the primary focus being pedestrian hikers. Opportunities also exist for cross country skiers. The majority of our trails are compact gravel surfaces with some asphalt sections through neighbourhood and community parks.

Please note that our trails are not groomed or maintained during winter months, and conditions vary widely. Surface conditions can change dramatically during the winter to create potentially hazardous hiking and skiing conditions. All users are advised to respect other trail users, to stay on designated trails and to exercise caution at all times.

ouTDooR WINTER SkATING

The Town currently constructs four outdoor ice skating rinks within our neighbourhood parks. These are located at Town Park, Confederation Park, Machell Park & Ada Johnson Park. The ice rinks are natural surface and are weather permitting, with construction typically taking place in the early New Year. All rinks are lit for evening skating and are mixed use, with hockey and pleasure skating taking place on the same rink. We ask users to respect others and wear protective gear at all times while on the ice.

MEMoRIAl TREE PRoGRAM

The Town of Aurora has a Memorial Tree Planting policy to enable the planting or designation of memorial trees on municipal lands within the Town. PARk bENCh DoNATIoN PRoGRAM

In response to requests from our residents who are regular users of our parks and trails, the Parks and Recreation Services Department is pleased to provide a Park Bench Donation Program. You can be part of the program and partner with the Parks and Recreation Services Department in donating a park bench complete with a personalized message of your choice which will be inserted on the bench. Your bench will be installed in a location of your choice in our parks or trails system and our staff will ensure that your bench receives the care and maintenance it deserves for years to come. Our Park Bench Donation program would make a great gift for that special person who is hard to buy for and will truly be a gift that keeps on giving to all of those in need of a place to rest in our parks and along our trail system. Heart Wise exercise: The Heart Wise Exercise initiative is intended to integrate the cardiac population into mainstream programs by addressing their physical and psychological

needs. The program provides exercise options to help participants choose appropriate programs and levels of intensities, while encouraging participants to do daily physical activities. A Heart Wise logo is located beside class descriptions that are Heart Wise approved exercise programs.

Arthritis Aquafit: Club Aurora offers a 45 minute specialty class for people who suffer from arthritis. The objectives of these recreational exercises are to reduce pain, help maintain or increase joint mobility, and increase muscular strength and endurance.

Aqua Therapy: This program, completed exclusively in our therapy pool, is designed to be gentle on the joints while focusing on muscle conditioning, improving strength, balance and flexibility. The program is designed to allow participants to stay active, reduce chronic pain and aid in preventing future injuries.
