Welcome to Tower Hill Botanic Garden Visitors are welcome! Please buy tickets in advance by visiting at www.towerhillbg.org. Tickets are not sold on site. Tower Hill follows Massachusetts guidance on face coverings. Please check our website before your visit for up-to-date information. Explore the following pages to discover experiences you can enjoy in person or on-line. We offer many opportunities to learn, explore and delight in all Tower Hill has to offer.

Because of your ongoing support of Tower Hill, we were able to secure funds to expand our beloved Vegetable Garden. Staff and volunteers donate more than 1,000 pounds of fresh produce to area food banks, and thanks to a generous grant from Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture, we’ll be able to increase our harvests and expand educational opportunities.

FALL IS IN THE AIR. BIRDS ARE HEADING SOUTH. SUMMER’S BLOOMS ARE FADING.

Through so much pandemic uncertainty over the last year and a half, some things remain constant, including the changing of the seasons, the enthusiasm of our members, and the dedication of our volunteers. Through thick and thin, our community comes together to steward this special organization toward the future.

FORWARD TO FALL

We work side by side to ensure Tower Hill is creating experiences with plants that inspire people and improve the world. Because of the support of members, volunteers, donors, and sponsors, we are able to connect new audiences with plants and nature. In addition to continued partnerships with organizations such as the Worcester Refugee Assistance Program, and the Worcester Public Schools, we’re also now collaborating with Worcester Head Start so that more children have the opportunity to have hands-on STEM experiences both in the classroom and at Tower Hill.

Thanks to your dedication, we were able to restore our heirloom apple orchard, ensuring that the historic varieties are preserved for generations to come. Faced with aging trees and a disease made worse by climate change, we partnered with Fedco Trees in Maine to graft and grow replacement trees that will be more resilient in the decades to come. You’ll see the 268 saplings growing along the driveway on your next visit to Tower Hill. I can’t thank you enough for your patience and understanding during this year’s construction. I promise you, the results, which you’ll begin to experience this fall, will be well worth the wait. We are committed to making Tower Hill a more accessible place to visit, and the bigger and better parking lot will help a lot, along with the new pathways to the Visitors Center. I cannot wait until we can open The Ramble (SEE PAGE 2 FOR MORE) for you to explore by late this fall and early winter. All of these efforts and more are only possible thanks to people like you, reading this Grow With Us magazine. Your passion, generosity, and care, allow us to think big and to take steps to improve. Together we can ensure that Tower Hill thrives for generations to come.

THE RAMBLE

TOW ER H I L L B OTAN I C GA R DE N | FA L L 2 0 2 1

BY NOW YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD THAT TOWER HILL BOTANIC GARDEN IS BUILDING A NEW GARDEN FOR CHILDREN, FAMILIES, AND THE YOUNG AT HEART. Perhaps you’ve seen pictures on social media of our progress building what we’re calling The Ramble. Or maybe you’re one of the curious onlookers who have craned your neck while walking on adjacent paths to see what all construction fuss in the woods is all about. The wait to start exploring this whimsical space won’t last much longer. So what should you expect when we pull back the curtain and unveil The Ramble? To answer that question, we need to tell you about W. Gary Smith. Nearly a decade ago, Tower Hill leaders reached out to this internationally renowned artist to imagine a space where children could explore, discover, and imagine. Smith provided a vision for a space kids could ramble through while adults were transported back to forest romps from their own childhoods. And while the project has evolved over the years, that same ethos is coming alive before our very eyes in the forest beyond Pliny’s Allee. It takes a village to build a garden like this, and while there are too many champions to fit in this space, including hundreds of exceedingly generous donors, you should know that landscape designers Ryan Associates and landscape contractors R.P. Marzilli are some of the best in the business. Despite the

unprecedented wild (wet) weather we’ve received this summer, The Ramble is coming together in spectacular fashion and slated to be ready for public exploration by late fall. They are making Smith’s vision a reality. What this team is bringing to life is a dreamlike landscape that builds on the memories many of us hang on to from our youthful forest adventures. In this reverie there’s a waterfall, a stream to hop over, a brush pile to climb through, and a hidden alcove to stack stones. There will be the practical, a bathroom and a stunning wooden pavilion for outdoor classrooms. And, of course, there will be a fantastic palette of plants, selected by our horticulturists specifically to entice curiosity from this garden’s little visitors. We want families to find a safe outdoor space where their children can play freely and make their own discoveries. We hope visitors experience the mental and physical benefits of being amongst the wildlife and plants. Our special hope is that these children discover at an early age the pleasure and value of nature. So that they may grow up inspired to be champions of plants, the environment, and the Earth. We want to pass along our love of the natural world to the next generation and The Ramble is for them.

A Garden of Inspiration

REDIET TADELE TOWER HILL STAFF

GARDENS CAN BE A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION, PEACE, EDUCATION, AND A HAVEN, A TIME WHEN THE WORLD SHRINKS TO JUST YOU AND THE GARDEN BED YOU ARE WORKING ON. With this in mind, Tower Hill decided to reimagine what was once known as the Systematic Garden. Built with the goal of interpreting plant taxonomy, the Systematic Garden featured planting beds arranged by plant family. Over the years, however, Tower Hill’s horticulture staff decided a change was needed to make the garden more interesting and more beautiful throughout the year. The person at the helm of the change is Erin Doolittle, a gardenerat Tower Hill. Erin envisioned a bold transformation. The old Systematic Garden became the Nadeau Garden of Inspiration and, with Erin’s design, transitioned from a primarily scientific garden to a garden of inspiration.

4

TOW ER H I L L B OTAN I C GA R DE N | FA L L 2 0 2 1

Each of the Garden’s more than 20 beds is vibrant and bold, with a different theme designed to inspire the visitors. Some new features include the shade perennial bed, sun perennial bed, and the rainbow border. In addition, visitors will enjoy the newly designed Fragrant bed filled with heavily scented flowers and foliage. The four beds surrounding the Kinship Arbor utilize the colors on the color wheel and are designed to pop like the rest of the Garden. The European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) planted on the northern half of the rainbow border will give the Nadeau Garden more of a secluded atmosphere while retaining the view of the Daffodil field when it blooms.
