SPRING ANEW SPRING IS ALWAYS A FAVORITE SEASON
at the Garden. Our sleepy landscape bursts into life, new plants are blooming daily, and the visitors are as active as the pollinators. This year, spring will be more special than ever. We are thrilled that we have a new name and a major new garden! To better reflect our goal of helping people all over New England make joyful connections with plants – Tower Hill has changed its name to New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill. To better inspire children and their families to become passionate stewards of the environment, we have opened a major new 1.5-acre children’s garden, The Ramble. Each improvement will allow us to position ourselves more strongly as a regional resource.

Our visitor numbers are steadily recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic and we have hundreds of programs and events for youth and adults planned this season. There is so much positive growth at New England Botanic Garden, but one thing keeps me up at night. New England Botanic Garden still has a long way to go to truly represent the community that we serve and meaningfully engage all people with our mission. Because of this, our board and staff have made inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility the backbone of our strategic plan. We are partnering with more community groups than ever before to develop ways for them to engage with us based on their direction. We are taking our mission off the hill and out into the community to expand on the urban forestry work of the former Worcester Tree Initiative and engage in community greening and education. Our new name is not about redefining who we are as a horticultural society and a garden, but embracing who we have become and opening up the possibilities to be more. Our members, visitors, and supporters have long cherished us as a beautiful place, a horticultural resource, and a place for recreation and rejuvenation. Now it is the time for us to expand those opportunities to our whole community. This garden belongs to our community and our region. We are the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill.

The Ramble invites the young and the young at heart to learn about plants and nature. THE RAMBLE, OUR NEW 1.5 ACRE GARDEN, set in the heart
of New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill, welcomes children, families, and everyone looking for a joyful, educational experience in a naturalistic setting. Created by internationally renowned landscape architect and artist W. Gary Smith and designed by landscape architectural firm Ryan Associates, The Ramble connects people from all over New England to plants, providing a greater appreciation and understanding of our natural world. The vision: to inspire the next generation of nature lovers, gardeners, and horticulturists through a garden that is truly magical, inviting, and accessible. Influenced by universal design principles, this 1.5-acre woodland garden is fully accessible. As a unique destination in the region, The Ramble is anticipated to attract families of all ages from throughout New England.
A one-of-a-kind “Stumpery” with tree stumps for climbing, a tunnel made of woven branches, and natural building materials offer hands-on imaginative play. An outcrop amphitheater lets students gather while on STEAM-focused field trips. For picnics and outdoor classes, there is a pavilion and plenty of picnic tables.

Horticulture Outreach Bringing People & Plants together OUR HORTICULTURE OUTREACH TEAM
continues to seek new opportunities to bring plants and people together, building on the strong foundation of community partnerships built by the Worcester Tree Initiative. Our vision for outreach includes collaborating with the City of Worcester to support the new Green Worcester Plan and offering Tower Hill’s expertise in horticulture and climate resiliency throughout Worcester County.
In summer 2021, we partnered with United Way of Central Massachusetts to expand the plantings in a traffic median on Franklin Street in Worcester with volunteers from UMass Medical IT, Clark University, and the Worcester Teen Leadership Initiative. Through a partnership with the City of Worcester and Worcester Downtown Business Improvement District, we installed seven large light sculptures on Worcester Common as part of the city’s Festival of Lights display. The colors celebrated the diversity of Worcester’s international community. We are partnering with various organizations to support resilient green projects in Worcester. Horticulture Outreach Manager, Amy Nyman, worked with College of the Holy Cross students to develop a pilot to increase community awareness for tree planting programs and Clark University student, Alvaro Esperza, translated the tree materials into Spanish.

In 2021, we collaborated with Main South CDC and the MassDevelopment TDI program to place six large planters in front of Main South businesses, where planting trees is often not feasible. In 2022, we plan to expand on this pilot program and install planters in partnership with business and community organizations throughout the city. We have big plans for 2022, including expanding our planting design and garden installation services in support of the city’s Green Worcester Plan. For example, we are working on a planting for Friendly House, selecting appropriate trees for the YWCA, and developing a landscape master plan for the India Society of Worcester’s India Center. We also will adopt the Lincoln Street Rotary near Great Brooke Valley as part of the city’s Adopt an Island program. We are actively seeking new locations, community partners, and volunteers to design and install green spaces throughout Worcester County.

Gary Smith, features stunning sculptures set amongst the landscape of New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill. Made from natural materials collected at the garden, this exhibit celebrates the connections between people and nature, combining art and horticulture to explore ecological design and artistic abstraction. Join us throughout the exhibition for events, tours, drop-in activities, and more as we explore different ways to connect with the land through art.
