What Can’t Plants Do? FOR THE THIRD SUMMER IN A ROW, OUR GARDEN ENTERED ONE OF PUBLIC HORTICULTURE’S TOP COMPETITIONS. The

Waterlily Weigh-Off challenges botanic gardens from around the world to grow the biggest, strongest Victoria water lilies. These tropical plants are known for massive, extremely buoyant pads.

As part of the contest, garden staff test just how much weight their lilies can hold. Creative “weigh-off” videos posted to social media introduce thousands of people to botanic gardens with a message that is entertaining, unexpected, and nerdy in all the best ways.

What started as a goofy competition offers a valuable reminder. If a Victoria water lily can cut through the noise of our digital age to spark curiosity about nature and ignite connections across the globe, what can’t plants do?

At the Garden, we see first-hand the power of plants to bring people together and solve tough problems. In the Climate Garden, new features, collaborations, and programs, which you can learn about in this issue of Grow With Us, demonstrate what’s possible at home and in the community. At our annual meeting in June, we recognized groups and organizations whose gardening initiatives improve access to healthy foods, expand educational opportunities, support habitat for pollinators, and more.

We also presented our inaugural Plant Science and Sustainability Award to local high school students. Young people, we know, are essential to creating a future where people and plants thrive.

Today’s Garden is part of a vibrant ecosystem. Thanks to you, we’ve grown into a vital horticultural resource, a trusted community partner, and (shameless plug) the best garden in the nation for holiday lights, according to USA TODAY. We’re proud of each and every one of our accomplishments and grateful for the support that allows us to lead with such impact.

Year Three:

RESILIENCE IN FULL BLOOM

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO GARDEN IN A CHANGING CLIMATE?

As people continue to burn fossil fuels, the rippling effects of a warming planet—heat waves, drought, invasive species pressure—will continue to threaten gardens, livelihoods, and the health of our ecosystems.

But ecologically sensitive practices can help gardens of all sizes be part of the solution.

In the Climate Garden, a combination of carefully selected plants, low-impact design elements, and features that create habitat and conserve natural resources demonstrate sustainable gardening techniques that are both rooted in science and replicable on many scales, 4

including our own homes. Cultural partnerships and educational programs set in this space work to further extend the Climate Garden’s mission and message: Together, we can respond to the biggest challenge of our time.

“By creating opportunities to learn about sustainable gardening, demonstrate resilient practices, and connect across ages, backgrounds, and cultures, we hope to inspire deeper engagement with climate action in our communities,” says Steve Conaway, Director of Horticulture. “I’m excited for new elements that continue to move the Climate Garden in this direction.”

Here’s what’s new RAIN GARDEN During rainstorms, water runs off impervious surfaces and drains into streams, rivers, and oceans. This stormwater causes erosion and carries pollutants that harm our ecosystems. Rain gardens help mitigate these problems by absorbing stormwater. Deep-rooted native plants draw water from the surface and ensure it infiltrates into the soil. Combining beauty and function, the Climate Garden’s rain garden features adaptable species tolerant of flooded conditions as well as stretches of drought: Joe Pye weed (Eutrochium dubium ‘Baby Joe’), buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis ‘Crimson Comets’), swamp rose mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos), tussock sedge (Carex stricta), and New Jersey tea (Ceanothus americanus).

GREEN ROOF While rain gardens manage stormwater at ground level, green roofs help address similar problems when added to the tops of buildings. Green roofs also introduce a host of additional practical, ecological, and economic benefits. They maximize plant diversity, offer habitat to wildlife, help cool buildings in the summer, and clean the air. Drought-tolerant plants like sedum (Sedum rupestre ‘Angelina’) are well-suited to green roofs.

The Climate Garden’s green roof, installed earlier this summer, includes blazing star (Liatris spicata), beebalm (Monarda bradburiana), and Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pennsylvanica), plants favored by pollinators and other beneficial insects.

OPEN TOP CHAMBERS Climate change impacts our gardens in both extreme and nuanced ways. This year, in collaboration with partners at the University of New Hampshire, the Garden’s horticulture team added open top chambers to four beds in the Climate Garden to perform climatecomparison studies. Equipped with air and soil temperature monitors, these experimental chambers mimic the shifting conditions expected with climate change and allow us to observe the potential effects

on our garden plants. Data gathered informs ongoing research about crop vulnerability and potential resilience in a changing climate.

CULTURAL PARTNERSHIPS As our climate continues to change, crop plants common to other parts of the world may prove themselves better suited to New England gardens than they once were.

Collaborations with local cultural partners help the Garden to both explore this idea and create meaningful connections in the community. This year, members of Casita Cultura Latina, India Society of Worcester, and the Southeast Asian Coalition partnered with the Garden team to inform crop selection and provide ongoing stewardship in three of the Climate Garden beds. Thanks to these collaborations, visitors were able to experience plants like epazote (Dysphania ambrosioides), bitter melon (Momordica charantia), and lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) throughout the summer.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS As the Climate Garden grows, so do programs for kids and families. Free programs like Farm to Market, a drop-in program offered as part of the Garden’s Nature Play Days series, and family classes like the Little Growers Garden Club, introduce budding gardeners to plants while summer camp activities, field trips, and homeschool programs help school-age children make ecosystem connections while learning about native plants, pollinators, soil health, sustainability, and climate change. No matter the program, the Climate Garden’s intentional design and thoughtful plant selection help create memorable, hands-on opportunities that inspire environmental stewardship at every age.
