NOTES FROM THE MANAGER It appears that there is finally a light at the end of the COVID-19 “tunnel.” The vaccine is being distributed at a rapid rate and the Club continues to protect its members by doubling up efforts on housekeeping and utilizing a variety of products to sanitize areas. I want to thank all our members for the incredible support during this time as we continue to see many nights sold out in the restaurants (and Easter was a smashing success)! All the events and restaurant activity are monitored closely and stay within the Health Department guidelines. For those that are interested, the current rules are as follows. In the restaurants we can have 50% capacity up to 100 people. For indoor events, we can host up to 25 people. For outdoor events we can host up to 300 people. I would also like to thank our staff who continue to serve our members and guests despite the inherent risk. I am very grateful to have the team we have here at the Club. With summer on its way, there are so many exciting things to look forward to! The Club is pleased to announce that the renovations to the Spinnaker Room and the Lobby/Foyer Area are on schedule and should be completed by July 1. The new Spinnaker Room will become the GPYC’s signature dining venue featuring only the highest level of service to compliment an upscale menu and wine list to entertain your family, friends and clients. The required minimum attire in this venue will be sport coat and dress denims for men and appropriate complimentary attire for ladies. The renovation to the Lobby/Foyer Area will feature luxurious appointments inspired by nautical themes and bring a more upbeat ambiance to the Clubhouse. Please note that the Club continues to be open throughout the renovation period. Stop by and check out the progress! Mother’s Day will be like Easter with four seatings of 100 people, so please be sure to get your reservations early. Unless restrictions loosen, the Club is only able to seat 100 people at one time. I look forward to seeing all the boats back in the Harbor and all of the kids roaming around enjoying the various summer programs soon. Let’s make this summer the best yet! Smooth sailing,

COMMODORE’S CORNER Greetings fellow Grosse Pointe Yacht Club members, Summer is about to burst upon us. Thanks to our premier staff, our campus will be dazzling and in tip top condition. As we completed our COVID winter, notice that we never closed. Part of VISION 2026 is that we will continue being open and having some type of food service seven days a week. There are a few things you will notice as you arrive at the club (by land!). There is a new security gate and arm, and all those varnished benches have been totally refurbished pro-bono by Dan Connells firm (thank you Dan). You will also cross our newly renovated moat bridge to get to the Clubhouse – thank you to the Moroun and Milner families for funding of this project. As you cross the bridge, look to your left to see our 4 new EV charging stations, installed at net zero cost to members, thanks to a special DTE Program. Simply pass your car to the valets and they will see that you are charged up. Our swimming pool has had extensive repairs to prepare for the MICSA finals, being held at the Club late this July. Near the pool, the back stairs up to the Binnacle Dining Terrace have been made safe and operational by Tony Pry and his team. In our Harbor, Alex Turner and Chris Izzi have worked all winter on improving service to our members with our Harbor staff. These are just a few of the exciting things that have happened, plus many behind the scenes. Remember that this is just a start! Now that VISION 2026 is underway, led by Director Rick Lueders, your Board of Directors and GPYC staff are working on implementing a full five-year plan. This starts with the new Spinnaker Club that will reopen as a high-end dining venue (complete with GPYC branded ice cubes for the bourbon drinkers, thanks to Past Commodore Klenow). You’ll also see a new lobby this summer that reflects the exclusive Club we all belong to. The next step for VISION 2026 is to transform the Main Dining Room into a more inviting family dining area, along with a renovated Commodore's Room and an outside dining terrace. Remember this is a five-year plan, not instant. As Director Amy Kruger Malow says, we have taken VISION 2026 and turned it to a “vision in action.” Our membership is strong and growing, and we made it through COVID with a minimal effect on membership levels and financial position. So this summer will be a great season at the Club for all seasons! Come sail at our Marine Activity Center, swim in our pool, play tennis, play pickleball, enjoy our dining venues and have a cocktail at the Gazebo Bar under our new sunshades (thanks to the Starkes and Paschke families). Thank you for allowing Kathy and I to serve this year. See you at the Commodore's Ball on June 19.

Gary Marowske

SPORTS Tennis

The tennis and pickleball season is upon us and I couldn’t be more excited about it! 2020 was a long and arduous year for everyone, but it feels like hope is on the horizon and along with it some great summer-style tennis and pickle! Weather depending, the tennis and pickleball courts should be up and running by mid to end of May. Watch for my email updates. I want to welcome a new addition to our tennis program this year in tennis professional Marella Diakonov! Not only is Marella my sister, she is a phenomenal player who is a USPTA certified pro, plays on the USTA ladies 5.0 squad, and has a huge following of both junior and adult players! If you’re a tennis player, you probably already know her! Marella’s presence will expand our content and offerings and continue to further build the best summer tennis and pickle program in the area. Make sure to meet her this summer or get a hit with her on either the tennis or pickleball courts! Last year roughly 70 percent of our on court content was flex programming! What is flex programming? It’s tennis and pickle that works around your schedule and your level! Can't find a time for pickle and tennis that works for your family's busy summer schedule--no problem! Simply shoot us an email and we can create a flex group or private lesson that works for everyone. Finally, the pro shop is very excited to once again be authorized dealers for Babolat and Paddletek racquets and paddles. Babolat acts as the number one tennis string and racquet company in the world with players such as Rafael Nadal, Fabio Fognini, and Dominic Thiem using both Babolat racquets and strings, while Paddletek is made right here in Michigan and used by the world's top pickleballers! In terms of racquet stringing, we usually have a 24-hour turnaround, and we'll be glad to leave the racquet at the Front Gate for easy pick up. We are fully capable of grips and weight customization as well. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you out on our beautiful courts soon!

The hands down best way to stay up to date regarding any of our programs or events is to sign up for our weekly tennis e-newsletter by emailing Tennispro@gpyc.org. Best, Dmitri Diakonov Please note: the summer tennis and pickle schedule is out! Email: TennisPro@gpyc. org to request one.

Fitness Center

Our Fitness Center has so much to offer! Most of us think of the GPYC Fitness Center in the context of maintaining fitness or getting in better shape. However, the Center can also be a resource to supplement healthcare related therapy programs too! Are you in physical therapy and need extra help with your recovery program between therapy sessions? Peter Wendzinski, Fitness Director, is a great resource to help you achieve your recovery goals outside of the healthcare system. It can be intimidating to continue your exercises on your own at home, or it can be hard to stay compliant in between sessions. Peter can help you stay on track with your physical ‘homework,’ and he can also collaborate with your provider so your activities in the gym are within proper limits of safety, keeping your healing and recovery moving in the right direction. “Many of my clients are recovering from knee replacements, hip replacements, broken bones, and are stroke and heart attack survivors. I consult with their medical team to ensure they are cleared to train safely with me before beginning any workout routine. It is a convenient and attentive way to exercise in between doctor visits so your recovery goes as seamlessly as possible,” says Peter.

Meet Our New Yoga Instructor

GPYC Fitness is pleased to announce the hiring of Kathleen Wolney as our new yoga instructor! Wolney’s yoga journey started about 20 years ago when she joined a gym in Chicago that had many yoga classes to explore. Her practice deepened when she was pregnant with her first child and found

10

relief from pregnancy related aches and pains. A few short years later she and her family moved to Grosse Pointe and she joined a yoga studio. Enjoying her own practice so much inspired her to deepen her practice even farther and started teaching children’s classes. She was an early childhood classroom teacher before having children of her own, and “teaching children’s yoga is a wonderful way for me to combine my love for children and my passion for yoga.” Wolney said. Besides yoga her family loves to sail, and she even grew up sailing at GPYC! Private yoga is $90 an hour, or $150 for a group. Stay tuned for upcoming classes!

Fitness Center Reservations

Please remember to book gym reservations through Skedda. Each person needs to book their own individual time slot. You cannot book for yourself and also bring in your spouse, child or friend. Reservations must be made 12 hours in advance, and only three members are currently allowed in the gym at any given time.

Personal Training

Schedule a personal training session with Fitness Director Peter Wendzinski! The cost is $75 per hour, or $45 per half hour. Please contact Fitness Director Peter Wendzinski with any questions at pwendzinski@gpyc.org

Monthly Fitness Challenges

Each month, Fitness Director Peter will create a fitness challenge for members to complete from the comfort of their home. The winner and runner up of each challenge will win a prize. Contact Peter for more information, and stay tuned to your email for details on each monthly fitness challenge.

Karen started working at Forte Belanger (a premier local caterer) straight out of college. “I fell in love with the fast paced, high-end service industry and knew that executing high risk/high reward events was my passion,” she said. She was promoted to Senior Event Manager after only a short time and managed high profile accounts. She also trained the staff on service standards and executing the company's top galas, weddings & house parties. She attributes her success at Forte Belanger to the fact that she took the time to build strong relationships with her clients. Coming from the challenging background of off premise event management, the GPYC offered Karen an opportunity to focus on and perfect the service and operations of one prestigious location. Karen announced, “I want to uphold and elevate the ambiance, reputation and culture that the Club represents, striving to be the Top Premier Yacht Club in the country.” When asked what her best attribute is, Karen said without hesitation, “I think my best attribute is my drive. I'm a big picture, visionary thinker but take pride in perfecting and executing the smallest of details. Being driven is an asset in my career because every decision I make, big or small, plays into the overall experience of the members.” On her days off, Karen’s competitive nature shines through on the tennis courts and she also loves to travel. Whether she is exploring internationally or just taking a road trip, she enjoys seeing the world and learning new things. Please join me in welcoming Karen to the Club!

HARBOR

Welcome back to our great Harbor! As you can see, our Harbor is filling up fast and excitement is in the air for the 2021 boating season.

Harbor Master Alex Turner has completed staff training, and the “A Team” is prepared to help you in any way they can to make your time in the Harbor an enjoyable experience. This includes the launch of our upgraded Harbor Concierge Service, which can be used through the GPYC app. This digital service offers our boaters the ability to order boat services, food and beverage delivery (including beer!) and even ice delivery right to their boat. Using this new digital service will allow our Harbor team to serve you in a much more efficient manner. If you have any questions on how to use the app, reach out to Communications Director Katie Susko at ksusko@gpyc.org. A few more things to remember this boating season: Mark your calendars! The always exciting In-Harbor Boat Show is May 21st-23rd. Please remember all vessels on Tee Dock and Bridge Dock will need to relocate prior to the event. Please contact Harbor Master Alex by phone (313) 640-7000 to arrange temporary well assignments.

HAPPENINGS

Please keep in mind the following: • When leaving or entering harbor please, stay between the Red and Green buoys. • The area between the outer buoys and the harbor entrance is a no wake zone. • Boats leaving the harbor have the right of way. • Cutting between the buoys is not permitted by any type of vessel. • Vessels have the “right of way” at the Draw Bridge and Swing Bridge. Vessels are to hail the Harbor office via V.H.F. Channel 9 or call 313-640-7000 to open or close either bridge. • Please remember to advise the Harbor office of when you are expected to bring your vessel into the club for the season. Grog Shop: Stop by and see all the new items available in the clothing department! The Grog Shop is again offering an exceptional menu of grab and go food for your convenience so be sure to stop by and check it out! Their grab and go items, as well as their beverage offerings, will be available through the Harbor Concierge Service as well.

Harbor postings: Check the app or website for the latest posting. Remember to include the GPYC as an additional insured on your insurance policy and have a copy sent to Alex Turner.

New idea: The Harbor Committee has been in discussion with the GPYC to introduce a new Catch & Cook opportunity for our membership. Members will be able to bring cleaned fish back to the Club and have our expert culinary team cook and prepare your fish the way you want. Please keep a look out in your email for more details.

Entrance buoys: The entrance buoys have been installed for the season outside of the entrance to the Harbor. Alex has had a few inquiries regarding the proper procedure when entering and leaving the Harbor.

If you are interested in the First Mate’s Class, the Boat Safety Inspection, or have any comments or concerns regarding the Harbor, email me at cizzi@utsitech.com or call me at 586-530-7229. Tight Lines, Christopher Izzi GPYC Harbor Chair 2021 Harbor Committee

A Message from America’s Boating Club Grosse Pointe We are all excited to have the return of summer and boating season. But this year will be different from the past. The National Marine Manufacturers Association reported a 12% increase in boat sales in 2020, 12% increase in personal watercraft, 20% increase in wake boats, 12% for pontoon boats, a record year not seen since 2008. For the first time in 10 years, new boaters joined the sport in record numbers. Up until 2019, boating accidents and deaths were on the decline, but 2020 brought an increase due to all the new boaters and increased boat sales. So how do you keep yourself safe? Boating classes are available online from America’s Boating Club (a division of United States Power Squadron), the DNR and Boat US. Boater’s born after June 30, 1996 and drivers of personal watercraft age 14 and older need a Boater Safety Certificate to pilot a boat, which you obtain after completing a class. Mobile apps are available for download for free from the U.S. Coast Guard, America’s Boating Club, Discover Boating, NOAA, and Boat US. Many boating safety groups also have great videos up on YouTube, perfect for the younger generation. So stay safe by obtaining a Boating Safety Certificate, remain a sober skipper, always wear a life jacket, always wear an engine cut-off switch in a vessel less than 26 feet in size (new law April 2021), watch weather patterns and do not go out when it’s unsafe. File a float plan (easily done on America’s Boating Club App and email to family or friends), know how to use a fire extinguisher and flair, know how to pump gas and use propane safely, avoid propeller danger, and be watchful for CO2 poisoning. Vessel Safety Exams are available for free through the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and America’s Boating Club Grosse Pointe. You can contact Bob Wiczorek, member and boater at the GPYC, to arrange.
