COMMODORE’S CORNER As I write this letter, it’s a 15 degree day in February, with snow on the ground and expecting more. But I just can’t quit thinking about April 21. That’s the day that The Flamebuoyant goes in the water, only 80 days away. With the coming of boating season and warm weather, there is so much to celebrate at our Club. The Spinnaker Club and the Foyer will be starting renovations soon. Spring and summer event plans are coming together – and we know you’ll love what we’ve come up with! Plus, a lot of exciting things have happened since the last issue of The MAST. Our dining rooms have reopened for indoor dining. Bowling leagues are in full swing. Members braved the cold to enjoy Winter Fest Family Week activities. Other internal changes include promoting Executive Chef Colby Newman to Assistant General Manager – a well-deserved new role for him. General Manager Aaron Wagner and Harbor Master Alex Turner worked at the Ocean Reef Club on Key Largo for a period of time to learn how other yacht clubs function, and they brought back some great ideas for our Club. Plus, other new amenities are in the works for our Harbor. Your Board of Directors spent three days in Charlevoix at Director Silva’s new hotel, The Earl, for our annual long-term strategic planning session. The session was led by Director Rick Lueders as we discussed Vision 2026 - our plan for capitol and operational improvements for the next five years, including steps to renovate our Harbor. As you start dreaming of spring and summer, please mark your calendars now for the upcoming events at our club: Easter Brunch - April 4 Great Lakes Boating Festival - May 21-23 Memorial Day Blessing of the Fleet and Boat Christenings - May 31 Commodore's Ball - June 19 Kathy and I thank you for the opportunity to serve our Club. NOTES FROM THE MANAGER

Reunited and It Feels Good

For the most part, the Clubhouse has been an eerily quiet place to be during the pandemic. However, there were some positives that came out of it. The quiet time provided our team the ability to do deep cleaning and accomplish some maintenance projects we would not otherwise be able to do. But we missed you! Most of the reason we all love our jobs at the Club is because of the people, the connection, and the excitement. We are so glad you are back, and our service staff can come to work again. The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club is a beautiful Club filled with amazing history and wonderful views of the lake, but none of it matters much without the people…the community. In many ways, the Club is better than ever! Our Finance Committee and Management Team has kept us in a positive position during the various shutdowns, and our Philanthropy Committee has raised close to $800,000 in donations during that time. Your Facilities Committee and Heritage Committee are on the verge of presenting the final plans for renovations of the Spinnaker Club Room and the Lobby/Foyer Area. The Membership Committee has combined with the Communications Committee and both are working on initiatives to continually improve communication and our online/print tools. All programs and services are open and there will not be an annual shutdown in March anymore. WE ARE OPEN! The Club is still taking the proper precautions when it comes to COVID-19 to protect those who may not have received the vaccine yet. Every employee must go through a thorough screening using state of the art technology prior to entering the workspace. Our Housekeeping team is constantly cleaning and sanitizing all areas. Our Membership Department has created a Business Center up in the Tower to accommodate those who would like to get out of their house and enjoy the view along with complimentary coffee, snacks, printing services and office supplies. Please reference the Weekly Buzz on Tuesdays to make your reservation for the Business Center as well as all our other activities (trap shooting, Fitness Center, paddle tennis, pickleball, tennis, etc.). On that note, spring is in the air at the Club and it is time to sign your children and grandchildren up for the summer programs! Stay tuned to our website for full details. With all the pent-up demand, it would be good to get your reservations as early as possible in order to guarantee your place. Our Easter Egg Hunt will be taking place on Sunday, March 28 followed by our traditional Easter Brunch on Sunday, April 4. Mark your calendar for the Back to the Club Party on Friday, April 23 as that is always a great opportunity to see friends you may not have seen over the winter. You will also be able to get a closer look at some of the renovations happening. Lastly, the Great Lakes Boating Festival will be occurring May 21-23. Make plans to be at the Club that weekend to check out all of the newest models and enjoy the surrounding activities. This show seems to get bigger and better every year, and this year will be no exception. Prior to concluding I would like to take a moment to thank my staff. They have truly gone above and beyond to ensure the Club is not only maintained but primed for the grand reopening. Our various teams have implemented new training programs and revised policies and procedures to be more efficient and fully focused on the member experience. Our a la carte menu is now available to-go Wednesday-Sunday each week. You can place an order by calling the Front Desk at (313) 884-2500, who will transfer you to the Kitchen. Please note: Now that our dining rooms are open, the Curbside Carryout menu and online ordering will no longer be available.

GPYC Business Center

Tired of working from your house everyday? Or do you just need some peace and quiet, away from your virtuallylearning kids? Reserve a spot in the GPYC Business Center, where you can get your work done overlooking Lake St. Clair! We have converted the Tower Pub into an office space for our members to utilize during these work-from-home times. Our Business Center has everything you need to get your daily work done. Amenities include: • Wifi • Printer • Office supplies • Coffee machine • Snacks The Business Center can be reserved at gpycbusinesscenter.skedda.com. Half day and full day reservations are available Monday-Friday. Half day time slots are 7 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1 - 6 p.m. A full day reservation is for 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. Only one member will be allowed in the Office Tower at a time, and there will be extensive cleaning in between half day reservations. The Business Center can also be reserved for meetings.

Launch day is April 1, and we can’t wait! The Harbor will be open in March from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday. In April, Harbor hours will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m. seven days a week, with hours adjusting once the weather starts to warm up in April.

Weekly Soup Subscriptions

Our weekly soup subscription program will continue through the week of April 26. Each Sunday, a new lineup of gourmet soups will be available for pickup or delivery to keep you warm and cozy Monday through Friday. Each soup subscription package includes: 1 quart or pint of each daily soup (five total), 4 mini baguettes, assorted crackers and heating instructions for your convenience. Orders are due the Thursday before the pickup day on Sunday. Pint-sized soup subscriptions are $45, and quart-sized are $75. To place an order, please visit gpyc.org/soups.

It may have appeared that the Club has been quiet with the pandemic underway over the winter months. To the contrary, there has been a lot of planning in the Food & Beverage and Facilities & Maintenance Departments in an effort to improve your GPYC member experience. Plans are underway for renovations in the Spinnaker and the reception area for a much-needed facelift. The Food & Beverage Department continues to introduce more dining options, creative menu selections and more personalized service. The Tower Pub has been converted into a Business Center. Many of our members are working from home and are looking a different workspace solutions. The Membership Committee is working on improved communication and creative programs and events to keep members engaged. I am confident that with all the efforts

The 2021 Summer Fun Guide will be available by the end of March. Our children’s summer programs grow in enrollment each year and are a great source of recruitment. SPORTS Up Your Alley

After having bowling shut down for six weeks, we started back up with a bang. On Monday, January 18th, Michael Jozefiak IV bowled the fourth 300 game in our Club's history. This was Michael’s 1st game back from the shutdown. He then bowled games of 196 and 204 for a 700 series. Also bowling well in our Monday Night Men’s League is Charles Molnar, who bowled a 289 game and a 744 series. During the Thursday Night League, Wayne Wegner bowled a career high 257 game. For the ladies, Marilyn Stephenson bowled a 171 high game and was 108 pins over average. We have a couple of openings on the Monday Night Men’s League and a few on the Thursday Night League. The leagues will run until the end of April, so if you are interested in joining the Bowling Program give me a call or email to sign up. With the lifting of the restrictions we are now able to host small bowling parties. If you are interested, give our Catering Department a call. This is a great way to enjoy the Club during the winter months. Cost of renting lanes for parties is $35 per hour per lane and shoe rental is $5.00 per person. Platform Tennis Drop-in Play

Mondays & Thursdays | 6-8 p.m. Join fellow members for platform tennis drop-in play! Platform Tennis is played on raised courts, so there can be heaters beneath the court to prevent icing of the playing surface. If you are looking for a good way to stay active outdoors in cooler temperatures, this is your chance! The court and the paddles used are gritty to allow for better footing and the ability to put serious spin on the balls. The GPYC Platform Tennis Courts are enclosed in chicken wire, and the game allows you to take a ball off the chicken wire; however, you are not allowed to play the ball by hitting it to and off the chicken wire. Scoring is like tennis scoring, with love-15-30-40 and ad scoring. Games are played to 6 with a need to win by two, or play a tie breaker as agreed to by the players. One person on each team serves until a game is concluded. If you haven’t played, members will teach you the game swiftly. Platform tennis reservations can now be made through Skedda. Fitness Center

Please remember to book gym reservations through Skedda. Each person needs to book their own individual time slot. You cannot book for yourself and also bring in your spouse, child or friend. Reservations must be made 12 hours in advance, and only three members are currently allowed in the gym at any given time.

Personal Training

Monthly Fitness Challenges

Trap Shooting

Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Trap shooting season is in full swing at the GPYC. This is a great way to get outside during the winter months, enjoy some sunshine and spend time with fellow members. Reservations are now required for trap shooting, and can be made by calling the Front Desk. Reservations are for one hour time slots. All participants are required to wear masks at all times, indoors and outdoors. While there will be no formal food and beverage service, the Club will provide complimentary refreshments.

HARBOR

With spring fast approaching, Harbor Master Alex Turner and his team have worked non-stop preparing the harbor for the upcoming boating season. They’ve repaired docks, walkways and finger piers, and they’ve adjusted the ice eaters to levels that have kept our harbor from freezing, which stops any winter damage.

Harbor postings have been sent out and returned with our wells filling up fast. If you’re thinking of keeping your boat at the GPYC, get your bids in. You can see the latest harbor posting on our website and app. With launch date coming up, we ask that you inform the Harbor Office of your scheduled launch date. Water at the wells will be turned on April 15, weather depending. In preparation for launch, please remember to send the Harbor Master a copy of your vessel’s insurance with the GPYC as an added insured. As a recognized “CLEAN HARBOR” we are asking members to clean their wells when

they return in the spring removing old dock lines, hoses & floating devises they may have forgotten from last year. The Harbor Committee would like to remind you of a few key harbor etiquette items: 1. Vessels leaving the harbor have the right of way 2. Swimming is not permitted in the Harbor at any time due to the risk of electrical shock drowning 3. Fishing is not permitted in the harbor. It is permitted over the outer East Wall and South Wall areas. Remember to clean your area when finished. 4. When leaving or entering the Harbor, vessels MUST remain inside the navigational buoys 5. Vessels have the right of way at the Draw Bridge and Swing Bridge. Vessels are to hail the Harbor office via V.H.F. Channel 9 or call 313-640-7000 to open or close either bridge.

The always fun - Great Lakes Boating Festival is a go this year and is scheduled for May 21st - 23rd. Remember that vessels on Tee Dock and Bridge Dock will need to relocate their vessels until the show has ended. Please contact the Harbor Office if assistance is needed. The Harbor Committee is in discussion with the G.P. Power Squadron regarding the First Mate’s Class and will advise when dates are available to schedule. This will be an in-person class. Boat Safety inspections will also be available by appointment. Old technologies meet new minds Knots are one of the oldest technologies. For example, the reef knot was discovered by mariners thousands of years ago. Today, cables on NASA’s Mars Rover Curiosity are secured by those same “ancient” reef knots. Old school technology — meet today’s Grosse Pointe Yacht Club Junior Sailing. Our young sailors learn to tie that “ancient” and indispensable reef knot. ATTIRE POLICY The dress code is viewed as important and was established by you, the members of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, to compliment the excellence and standards of our Club. Our winter attire policy is club casual. Dress denims are permitted throughout the whole Clubhouse. Casual attire is permitted in the Bowling Recreation Center.
