Both locations are open and directly adjacent to the kitchen. This change allows our culinary staff, led by our Executive Chef Eric Voigt, to provide unique dining experiences faster than ever before. For the first time, the Spinnaker can shine as a quiet and intimate option to experience true “culinary excellence”. None of this would be possible without the collaborative efforts of the Board and the membership focus groups. Working together and engaging experts to enhance the member experience has provided a path to forge ahead with VISION 2026. Making changes in such a dynamic organization is a real challenge. We will assuredly have many hits, and a few misses along the way. Rest assured, the Board and management is listening and working hard to keep tweaking things to make the GPYC experience just right. We have recently added a feature to the app, so members are able provide constructive comments and compliments. True collaboration works when everyone has an opportunity to provide input. Obviously, we can’t all get our way, but our leadership is committed to evolving our Club to maintain and restore our rich heritage. We are building toward providing a world-class member experience that is exciting for both current and future members. Thank you for being a great member of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club! Sincerely,

Jason Grobbel Commodore GPYC Cover Photo: Courtesy of AJ Austin

NOTES FROM THE MANAGER Trimming the Sails Over the past couple of years, the Club has completed many significant projects. The sailing program and trap shooting program benefitted greatly due to the addition of the Marine Activity Center in the southeast corner of our Harbor. Young families continue to enjoy the addition of the playscape and splashpad at the Family Recreation Center. Our racquet sports have never been more popular due to the new sub-irrigated clay tennis courts and championship style pickleball courts. The bowlers are enjoying the completely renovated Bowling Recreation Center and that area has picked up on both league activity and event bookings. Most recently, the Lobby and Foyer received face lifts and our member dining has been redefined. With the overwhelming demand of casual dining in Clubs, your Board and Committees were able to repurpose the Main Dining Room (MDR) into a casual dining atmosphere and therefore repurpose the Spinnaker into a magical, upscale dining venue. With all of these areas changing, it was key to keep a pulse on our membership and take notes of what they liked and what they thought needed further improvement. The feedback on the MDR Bar was very positive and members feel that they finally have a “go to” bar for cocktails and dining. Members also really like the more casual menu in the MDR and prefer to see an ever-changing menu of specials and seasonal offerings commensurate to that theme. However, there was concern over the noise level and potentially missing the mark with the casual décor. There are still white linens on the tables and the Club reused the Binnacle chairs. We also received comments on the intense glare from the sun during lunch hours. We appreciate this constructive criticism and are making changes based on that feedback to maximize satisfaction. New tables (wood with no linen), chairs that match the barstools, and state of the art window film that blocks out sun glare are being researched. The Club also eliminated the piano performances in favor of the house background music to address the noise concerns and continues to research sound attenuation techniques. In the Spinnaker, the Club received feedback on the noise level and the pricing of the menu. The Club has researched sound attenuation techniques and has added a soft playing harpist on Friday evenings that has been very popular. Our Chef has revised the menu offerings to reflect more value while still keeping with the upscale theme, and we have seen the number of diners increase. Our new Executive Chef Eric Voigt and our Food & Beverage Director Gretchen Meeuws continue to raise the bar in service, and our management team will continue to make small changes in these areas to add to the delight of our membership. If you are sailing against the competition, you never stop trimming the sails. Constant efforts to incrementally increase your speed and efficiency will win a race! Smooth Sailing,

Aaron Kessler Wagner General Manager

GPYC Sailfish Coaches

Elizabeth Bourke Assistant Swim Coach

Learn more about the coaches of our Club's Swimmers

GPYC Sailfish swim coaches during the MICSA swim finals

Jim Singelyn Head Coach As a swimmer, Jim excelled at every level of the sport under legendary Grosse Pointe Swim Club coach, Fred Michalek. Jim was a multiple age group state champion and state record holder in the breaststroke and medley relays. Jim was a two-time national age group champion, four-time Midwest zone champion, scored in the top 16 at Junior Nationals and “Y” Nationals and qualified for Senior Nationals. In high school, he was a four time All State and a three time All American, 12 time All Catholic and 12 time All Macomb County. Collegiately, Jim swam for the University of Kansas and Eastern Michigan University where he finished his swimming career as a three-time Mid-American Conference Champion under Peter Linn. The coaching philosophy of Coach Singelyn is simple. “Swimming is the most grueling sport on the planet as far as conditioning goes; it’s my job to make it fun, because when swimmers are having fun, they get faster and their grades go up. With swimming there is a direct correlation with how hard you work and one’s success and this can easily be applied to the everything one does in life”.

9

I started swimming when I was four years old for the Country Club of Detroit. My favorite strokes are free and fly. When I swam for Grosse Pointe South, the 500 free, 200 free and 100 fly were my favorite events. I began working at the GPYC under my Coach Fred Michalik when I was 16 years old. I began teaching private and group lessons that summer. The following summer I also became a coach for the swim team. I coached and taught lessons at the Club for the next seven summers. I also coached with Bill Thompson at Grosse Pointe South and with Jason Black at U of D High School. I moved out of the area for several years, and upon returning to Grosse Pointe I began teaching water aerobics at GPYC. I have since become the pool manager at GPYC and am also coaching, teaching swimming lessons and teaching water aerobics during the summers. The rest of the year I am a third grade math and reading teacher, testing coordinator and positive behavior intervention support (PBIS) coach at the Cesar Chavez Academy in Detroit.

Bill Thompson Assistant Coach I started swimming with the Grosse Pointe Park Mutants when I was six or seven, and I enjoyed every stroke except the breaststroke. I swam for Grosse Pointe South, and my coach was former GPYC coach Fred Michalik. I liked the 100 backstroke and swimming on relays. In college, I swam for the University of Pennsylvania and primarily swam backstroke. I have coached for the past 35 years and have been head coach at Grosse Pointe Park, Pierce Middle School, Grosse Pointe South and the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. I currently love the assistant coach role at the GPYC and Grosse Pointe South. It’s a small swimming world in Grosse Pointe. I swam with head coach Jim Singelyn when we were age groupers, and I coached coaches Elizabeth Bourke and Nicole when they were in high school!

MEMBERSHIP The Golden Opportunity Program is Back! Reflecting back on all the challenges that the Club faced with Covid, shortness of staff issues and all of the capital improvements, we were fortunate that the Club managed to grow in both recruitment and retention efforts. 2021 marked a record year for recruitment and we are positioned well to have another good year in 2022. This time last year we recruited 7 new members in 2021 year-to-date. This year we have already recruited 19 members year-to-date. In an effort to ensure a repeated performance, the Membership Committee is bringing back the “Golden Opportunity” Program. Members will have an opportunity to invite family and friends

MATTERS

who they feel are qualified prospective members to Club events and their entry fee will be waived. Members will simply have to make arrangements by emailing me at shughes@gpyc.org. This is the perfect time to recruit members due to all the amazing renovations and added amenities. Just look for the Golden Opportunity sticker on Club event invites.

Just about when this newsletter hits your doorstep, you will be receiving your 2022 Member Guide. You will find the Guide has some different features this year. The layout is different and spouse’s photos are included this year. If you are interested in including your spouses photo in the future, please provide a high resolution head shot via email. As an alternative, a professional photographer is at the Club every month for the Candidate Receptions.

If you or your spouse are interested in having a photo taken for the Guide, please email me at shughes@gpyc.org to make arrangements. As I’m sure you are all aware, The GPYC House Rules are outlined in the back of the Member Guide. Some changes have been made to the House Rules and are outlined below. Thanks to Carol Klenow, Doug Dossin, Kathy Marowske and Linda Schaden for reviewing the House Rules and making the recommendations for approval by the Board of Directors. If you have any questions regarding these new house rules, feel free to reach out to me at any time. Susan Hughes GPYC Membership Director (313) 640-3188

Fitness Happenings Please mark your calendar for Saturday, March 12, for Spa Day at the GPYC! We are pleased to partner with Tiffany Gennety, former Tranquility Spa Director at the DAC and her seasoned team for a day filled with relaxation. The Tower Pub will be transformed into a calm, beautiful spa with massage tables overlooking Lake St. Clair and stations to get your nails done. We will be offering aromatherapy, deep tissue, and sports massages with optional cupping. Aromatherapy is a massage with essential oils and is done for a variety of different reasons, including relaxation, pain management, and improved mood.

SPORTS

By adding in the essential oils, it activates your sense of smell and increases your sense of well-being. Deep tissue is a massage that uses firm pressure and slow strokes to activate deep layers of the muscle and fascia and covers all areas of the body. Sports massage with optional cupping is great if you’re an athlete and need extra attention to muscles that are overused while training. Cupping is what you see on a lot of swimmer’s backs when you watch the Olympics. It creates a suction on your skin that helps alleviate pain and speeds up the recovery process. Each massage will be 60 minutes long and cost $150, which includes mimosa or wine, complimentary robe, and small GPYC gifts.

The nail options we will be offering are spa manicures, pedicures, and shellac. All three will focus on stress relief, relaxation, and hand massaging. Manicures are $65, and pedicures and shellac will be $75. They will be 45-60 minutes, and include mimosa or wine, complimentary robe, and small GPYC gifts. An express manicure will also be offered for $40, with only mimosa or wine included. Space is limited to three people per hour, so please contact Peter Wendzinski at pwendzinski@gpyc.org to register today! Best in Health, Peter Wendzinski Fitness Director (313) 640- 7023
