NOTES FROM THE MANAGER Buzzing with Action!

It seems that with the mass distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine we are finally turning the corner on getting back to the old “normal.” The Club offered the COVID-19 vaccine onsite on several occasions thanks to a local pharmacy and recently eliminated its mask policy to continue to take steps towards that old “normal.” Sports stadiums are filling up again, restaurants are back open for business, and outdoor summer activities are more popular than ever. Boating continues to surge as our Harbor is at a capacity level not seen in years, and the pent-up demand for dining and special events is amazing. Our greatest challenge without question during this pandemic has been staffing and I wanted to share some of the adjustments we have made to continue to serve you at a high level. The Club will continue to serve seven days a week, but we have gotten creative to make that happen. On Mondays and Tuesdays, we are featuring rotating food trucks outside for the pool goers along with grab n’ go options at the Grog Shop (and of course our Gazebo Bar for cocktails). We will continue to introduce new and exciting food trucks and pop-up stations the entire summer. Stop by and check it out! The Binnacle and Binnacle Terrace will be open for lunch and dinner service Wednesdays-Saturdays, and brunch will be served on Sundays. These venues will also be open for dinner WednesdaysSundays. Want an alternative casual meal? Check out the Harborside Grill Wednesdays-Sundays for lunch and dinner. Their menu is always rotating and includes special features. We hope you enjoy these offerings and look forward to serving you and your family. On a fun note, the GPYC has recently partnered with an organization called Bees in the D to support our threatened local honeybee population. We now have two colonies of honeybees on the roof of the Ballroom helping to pollinate the flowers in our area and we hope they will be producing batches of honey for us soon that we will use in cocktails and culinary dishes! Stay tuned as we plan to install live webcams to track their progress. Smooth sailing,

Aaron Wagner General Manager

COMMODORE’S CORNER July 4th is upon us and masks are gone! Normality seems to be returning for all of us. Aaron Wagner and his great team at the Club are in high gear, make sure to give them a big thank you for all their hard work. At the end of July, the Club will be hosting the MICSA Swim Finals. Our organizing team has been working tirelessly for three years now, including through the ups and downs during COVID. Please thank Jim Boutrous, Steve Beckett, Maureen Gleason and Julie Schuetze for all that they have done for this event. Rendezvous season has begun, so get ready for our Catawba Island Rendezvous and Up North Rendezvous in Charlevoix. We encourage all to come by land or by sea. If you’re interested in attending, contact Alondra Kennedy at akennedy@gpyc.org. In mid-August, we have our annual Fleet Review. This year will have some casual twists to it. Don’t miss dock decorating around your favorite boat-themed TV show or movie. The remodeling of the Spinnaker is moving right along. You can expect an upscale dining experience unlike anything you’ve ever seen at the GPYC. The Board of Directors has also authorized the renovations to continue moving forward with the refurbishment of our Main Dining Room. This includes redecorating and converting it to a larger casual dining area. The jewel of the room will be a multi sided bar where you can sit and eat. To get a feel for this renovation, we have a rendering of the Main Dining Room on display in the Rotunda. Recently you received the brochure defining VISION 2026 with a detailed explanation of the strategic long-term plan designed by your board. The Planned Giving pamphlet described how you can remember the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club and help our club to continue for future generations. All of the many advancements and improvements over the past 4 years have only been achieved because of our generous members giving over $4.2 million. All of our members give forward to ensure that Grosse Pointe Yacht Club will be a place for families, generations into the future. This is simply putting VISION into action. We can do it together. Kathy and I both thank you for this honor to serve! God Bless

MEMBERSHIP Interesting Recruitment Trends

Looking back at recruitment activity over the past year, it is evident that the GPYC is rebounding from the challenges last year. This time last year we recruited 42 new members year-to-date. This year we are at 56 new members. The rate of resignations really slows down during the summer months, so we will now have an opportunity to grow the member count over the next few months. Recent club data shows that the age of members in private clubs has dropped from 58.6 in 2017 to 54.9 in 2020. While the average age of a GPYC member is at 58, the GPYC may be headed in that direction. Over the past year, there has been a 25% increase in recruiting members under the age of 36.

MATTERS

Club consultants are finding younger people are joining in part due to individuals who watched their parents work well into their 70s and they don’t wish to wait that long before investing in their own health and lifestyles. Another clear reason for our success in recruiting has been largely due to the capital improvements and added amenities. There have been so many more and improved programs and services for members of all ages, particularly young families. Now that pandemic restrictions are lifting, let’s hope for continued success in recruiting candidates for membership.

SPORTS Up Your Alley

We finally made it through our bowling season, although there were some rough patches along the way. We ended up having around 100 bowlers in the bowling leagues: 30 in the Monday Men’s, 20 in the Thursday Night League and 48 in the 2 Friday Couples leagues. I am predicting a strong comeback for our leagues next year. Our Wednesday Night League and Thursday Morning Ladies leagues will be back, and I am also looking to start another Monday night Men’s league first shift, a 5:30 trio league. The season concluded with the finals in the Men’s and Ladies Club championship. I am happy to report that Kevin O’Brien and Valentina Izzi, both from the Thursday Night League, are the 2021 Club Champions. Vali (as her friends call her) defeated teammate and former champion Marilyn Stephenson in the finals. In the men’s finals, Kevin O’Brien’s 717 series defeated two-time champion John Seago’s 657 and Derek Starks’ 667. The team club champions for 2021 are from the Monday Night Men’s. The team of Chris Izzi, Brad Danna, Gardner Martin, John Seago and Charles Molnar are our champs. Some other award winners: Most improved bowlers: Derek Starks +19 pins; Connie Buffa +18 pins. Club High Average: John Seago – 229; Renee Seago – 142 I am also happy to announce that Chris Izzi is this year’s Bowler of the Year. Chris bowls in 2 leagues each week and is very active in our other bowling programs. Chris was a big part in the remodeling of the bowling alley and has a lot of input into the future of the bowling program. Everyone received their awards at our annual bowling banquet on June 10. If you are interested in joining one of our leagues next fall, send me an email. For new members that want to get involved in our bowling program, I highly recommend one of the Friday Couples leagues. The couples #1 league bowls the first Friday of the month, and the Couples #2 league bowls the third Friday of the month. This

a great way to meet and socialize with other members.

Summer Open Bowling

We are also open this summer for open bowling on Friday Nights. The best way to make sure you have a lane during the Friday Bowling is to buy one of our sixweek packages. The cost is $210, which will guarantee you a lane each Friday. The second batch of 6-week packages begins on August 6 and will run through September 10. If you are interested in any of the bowling programs, send me an email at gwoods@gpyc.org. The BRC is also open for bowling parties during the summer months. The cost is $35 per hour, per lane. If you are interested in hosting a bowling party, contact our Catering Director, Alondra Kennedy, and she can get you started. Thank you and have a safe and fun summer. GPYC Fitness It seems everywhere you look these days there is a new health food store popping up that claims its products are the best way to help you reach your fitness goals. With an abundance of smoothie shops in the area, the one that I recommend to my clients. They are located across the street from Grosse Pointe South, on Fisher. “We try to do things differently at JHouse-that means no added sugars, ice, or other sneaky stuff in our juices, smoothies, and food. Everything we serve is delicious, organic, whole food,” said Emma Kruse, coowner of JHouse. GPYC Fitness has partnered with JHouse since opening in 2019. The gym is consistently stocked with kombucha, juices, and protein cookies provided by JHouse. In April we offered a juice cleanse through their store that was very well received by our members. Member Jim Comer who participated in the cleanse said, “I really enjoyed the quality and variety of the juices and the vegan foods. It was much easier than I thought it would be,

SPORTS

and I felt great. Energized, invigorated, and would recommend JHouse to friends.”

“Everything we can we make in-house at our store, so we know exactly what goes into our milks, dressings, flours, and products,” Emma also added. With so many places to choose from, consumers need to be aware of the downside of certain stores which advertise healthy foods and drinks. There is a smoothie shop in the area which offers a smoothie that contains Lucky Charms, marshmallows, sprinkles, and Rice Krispies on top, and claim to contain less sugar than a banana. This may be true, but many of these low sugar smoothies contain artificial sweeteners and include many ingredients that many people would find hard to pronounce, let alone know what its function is. This same nutrition store uses controversial "health supplements", which have been under worldwide scrutiny in the past for using highly processed ingredients such as protein isolates, gums, and synthetic vitamins.

Conversely, there are several shops in the area which offer smoothies that are loaded with added sugar. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 36 grams of added sugar per day. Americans on average consume more than twice that amount. Added sugars include sucrose, dextrose, table sugar, syrups, soft drinks, candy, desserts, honey, and sugars from concentrated fruit or vegetable juices. Added sugars are added during the processing of packaged foods and do not provide any nutritional benefits. On the other hand, natural sugars are naturally occurring in whole foods like fruit that come with added health benefits like fiber and antioxidants. Please be cognizant of what you put in your bodies, as they are the greatest instruments you will ever own. We look forward to our relationship with JHouse, and you will be sure to see their products by the pool bar this summer. Best in health, Peter Wendzinski Fitness Director
