COMMODORE’S CORNER
Happy new year to all! I’m sure we are all very happy to put 2020 behind us. What a year it has been - just look at all the adaptions our Club needed to make. From virtual Friday happy hours and fun at-home culinary projects to assigned seating at the pool and Halloween Trick or Treating on the front drive (thanks Tony Pry for the great decorations). So, make sure when you see Aaron Wagner or any of his team, remember to say thank you for all they have done during such a challenging year. We are still working hard to make sure the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club remains the Premier Yacht Club in the Country. Luckily, I see hope on the horizon for this coming year. The Club is working hard on planning all of your favorite events so they are better than ever. For those of you that thought your invitation for the Annual Commodores Ball got lost, don’t worry! The ball will be held June 19, 2021. Joe Schaden of our Heritage Committee located an invitation from the 1951 Commodores Ball, which was also held in June. So Kathy and I are going back to the future! There are also several projects being worked on to improve our Club and facility. The Board of Directors has committed that any projects will not be taken on until complete funding is in place. You will notice the first improvement within the next few months - pending funding - in the Spinnaker Club and the foyer. We intend to fund these, and other exciting improvements, primarily through member donations. If you are willing to help us out with donations for other renovations, please contact Philanthropy Chair, Vice Commodore Jason Grobbel. As you may know, your Board of Directors, guided by Director Rick Lueders, has worked hard on creating Vision 2026, a five-year Strategic Plan to guide current and future boards. Rick gathered four focus groups to ensure your Board is moving aspirational plans forward for every member while building on our great traditions. We are working now to refine these plans which extend several years forward. In addition your board has decided on three major focus areas for the coming year: 1) providing the best possible professional service; 2) assuring a first-class appearance for the building and grounds; and 3) capital prudence. As we approach our renovation period, remember the club no longer shuts down completely. Services will be reduced at certain times, but we will remain open. Please excuse the dust when you come by to bowl, dine, trap shoot, or play paddle tennis. The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club is a Club for all seasons, so be sure to enjoy it! God Bless and thank you all.

NOTES FROM THE MANAGER
Socially Close…Physically Distant
For this issue of The Mast, I chose to take a different angle than “the norm.” Typically, I write about upcoming events and promotions. However, the world we live in today is a bit more complex than that and deserves a little more recognition and addressing. When we entered the “COVID-19 era” my stance was one of fearless confidence. “I am young, and COVID-19 can’t harm me,” I told myself. So, I joined the crowd when it came to expressing disappointment in our Governor and how our government handled the pandemic in respect to the decisions that greatly impacted our businesses and our overall economy. But in November, I was finally struck by the COVID bug. At first, I only experienced mild symptoms like a bad cold or mild flu. But then I began to have severe body aches almost everywhere and it really took a toll. The only way I can describe it is to say that I felt like I was in a car accident. At one point, I ended up in the hospital because my doctors wanted to rule out blood clots. All in all, it was a very rough time. Why am I writing this? I think it is important to share this experience so that people understand the potential health issues this virus can cause. I am 37 years old. Never smoked, don’t drink, never any drugs, and overall, very fit. This just goes to show you that this virus does not discriminate when it comes to impacting people. The most important thing to note is that I am one of the lucky ones! I feel fortunate, seeing as we have lost several Club members this winter due to COVID. If you are reading this, please take a moment to honor these members who are no longer with us. While the Club may not be able to function at its full “in-person” capacity, we are continuing to offer services and amenities to you and your family. Our goal is to cultivate an atmosphere where we are Socially Close…Physically Distant. One of the most important things during this time is to stay connected with your friends and family, and we intend to be a conduit for that. Chef Colby has been entertaining families with the weekly Confection Connection, so that children could make their own snowman-themed cupcakes, campfire desserts and more. Families came together to make Chef’s take-home pizza kits as well. And I hope you are taking advantage of our Curbside Carryout and weekly soup subscriptions. As I write this article, the Membership Activities Committee and the Pointe Club Committee are coming up with ways to creatively host the Winter Blast within the rules of social distancing and being outdoors for some snowy fun. The Club will be setting up an ice rink - should the weather stay cold enough complete with hot chocolate stations. I say that hoping by the time this article comes out we will be able to reopen the dining room and see you all in person again. In addition to all these fun activities, the Board of Directors is working to advance the Vision 2026 Strategic Initiatives. If the pandemic offered anything positive, the opportunity to improve the Clubhouse was definitely one of those things! Stay tuned via the Weekly Buzz, Facebook Group and Instagram page for updates on the projects. Lastly, I would like to thank all of our members for your continued support of our wonderful Club. The Board of Directors and Staff DO NOT take your support for granted. We appreciated your participation in the Curbside Carryout while we were closed as well as the constant support when it comes to the various activities (both inperson and virtual). Let us be grateful for our health and look forward to good times ahead as the Club continues to grow and innovate. Smooth sailing,
Aaron Wagner

STAFF
SPOTLIGHT
Communications Director – Katie Susko By: General Manager Aaron Wagner The Club recently introduced Katie Susko, a new member of the GPYC Leadership Team in the role of Communications Director. Katie said, “I’m so excited to take on this role at GPYC. It’s such a big step forward in my career.” Katie grew up with two hard-working parents that always encouraged her to do what she loved and never held her back. She learned by example as her mother raised two kids and worked a full-time job while completing her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. It showed Katie that nothing is off limits. The “powerful woman theme” continued when I asked Katie who she would like to have lunch with (anyone dead or alive). “I would love to have lunch with
Michelle Obama. She is one of the most inspiring and hardworking people around, and I would love to pick her brain,” she said. Katie studied at Michigan State and graduated with a degree in professional writing so that she could focus on creative work, including writing, graphic design, and website design. When applying for colleges, she only applied to MSU due to her love of the school and the town. She considers it her second home, especially during football season! She has big plans for the GPYC and I am confident that she will become an impactful leader at our Club. Katie is focused on expanding the Club's digital footprint through the website and mobile app, and she would like to improve upon the communication to the membership in all areas.

HARBOR
HAPPENINGS
I am honored to have been asked by Commodore Marowske to Chair the 2021 Harbor Committee. I am looking forward to the opportunity to serve. As committee chair, I have established a core group of members to serve on the committee, and we will be working close with Harbormaster Alex Turner and his team to continue to provide an unparalleled Harbor experience.
to all our members’ needs. If you did not receive a renewal, please advise the Harbor Office at 313-640-7000.
Safety in our Harbor is a must! The 2021 harbor committee has been walking docks regularly documenting safety, maintenance & appearance concerns. It is the harbor committee’s responsibility, along with the Harbormaster, to make sure all concerns are addressed. All docks have been visually reviewed, documented & discussed for suggested repairs. Updates to follow.
By the time you read this, the harbor will be secured for winter. Alex and his team have been hard at work winterizing the harbor with the installation of the ice eaters. These will help reduce winter damage to the docks that we have witnessed in past years. They’ve also relocated dock boxes and trash cans so the winter wrath does not wash them overboard due to high water, as in previous years.
Slip lease agreements for the 2021 boating season have been mailed out and hopefully completed. They can be returned to the Harbor Office. Slips are at a premium, and we will do our best to be accommodating
Regarding Insurance for your vessel moored at GPYC, the GPYC needs to be listed as an additional insured on your policy and Alex will need a copy for Harbor records. There is no additional cost to add the GPYC to your policy.
January and February are the time we start thinking of spring, warm weather and checking off that list of things to do on our boat to ready her for spring launch.

Hopefully, we will not have any concern for the potential of high water due to the great work that is completed and is still ongoing in our harbor. We will do our best to ensure all members have a problem-free boating season. Communication to and from our members is key to accomplishing a clean, safe harbor. If there is an interest from membership, we have discussed revisiting First Mate’s classes and Power Squadron classes for all family members to participate in. Please reach out to me if your family has interest. Members’ thoughts, comments and concerns are always welcome. You can email me cizzi@utsitech.com. We hope to hear from you. Wishing everyone a safe & healthy 2021 boating season! Christopher Izzi Harbor Chairman 2021 Harbor Committee

MATTERS
Looking back over the past year, the GPYC was fortunate to stand strong through the challenges of the pandemic. We were able to fill the harbor and the number of resignations was not as high as expected. The good news is that there are hopes that most of the members who left in 2020 will return to the Club as soon as vaccines are in distribution and the weather warms up. GPYC members should be proud for hanging on in such a tough time. Your loyalty and dedication to this Club speaks volumes. Looking forward to a better 2021! Speaking of the Harbor, the first boat well posting will be available this month and the assumption is that it will be full by the spring season. Membership inquiries are usually at its’ peak in the spring season. If you know boaters who may be interested in harboring at the GPYC, now is the time to refer them for membership. I can be reached by email at shughes@gpyc.org or (313) 640-3188. Finally, I would like to welcome Communications Director Katie Susko to the staff of the GPYC. She brings enthusiasm and strength in writing, print and digital media, app development, and video production. You will see her around at events meeting members, taking photos and gathering stories for our various communications avenues. So if you see her around, please introduce yourselves! SPORTS Up Your Alley
Hello GPYC Members: As of this writing, the Governor has shut down all bowling activity. When we can start up again is anyone’s guess. We are hopeful to be open by January 1. If that is the case, we will start our 2nd half season for leagues. The week January 4th will kick it all off with the Monday Night Men’s. GPYC open bowling will begin on Saturday, January 9th. Open bowling times will be 2-hour blocks; either 5-7p.m. or 7-9 p.m. You must make reservations with the bowling center at gwoods@gpyc.org. No walk-ins will be allowed. At this time, we are not be sure of the Health Department guidelines on how many people will be allowed in the bowling center. Hopefully, we will be able to host bowling parties. If you would like to host a bowling party, contact our catering office at 640-7006 or 640-7007 to book a date.

as the ball is more like a tennis ball. The GPYC Platform Tennis Courts are enclosed in chicken wire, and the game allows you to take a ball off the chicken wire; however, you are not allowed to play the ball by hitting it to and off the chicken wire. Scoring is like tennis scoring, with love-15-30-40 and ad scoring. Games are played to 6 with a need to win by two, or play a tie breaker as agreed to by the players. One person on each team serves until a game is concluded. Serves can be overhand, and typically are. If you haven’t played, members will teach you the game swiftly.
SPORTS Platform Tennis Reservations
Please observe the following guidelines for making court time reservations: • Reservations can be made Wednesday through Sunday by calling the Front Gate at (313) 640-7001 or emailing frontgate@gpyc.org • Reservations can be made on Monday and Tuesday by calling Susan Hughes at (313) 640-7001 or emailing shughes@gpyc.org before 5 p.m. • Reservations can be made no more than four hours in advance. • Only one court can be reserved at a time. If the other court is open, it can be made available for use. • The court may only be resesrved for 1 ½ hours at a time. This time cannot be “piggybacked.” If the court is not being used at the end of the reservations, you may continue to play.

Which dining rooms and bars are open will change based on the Club’s needs and state regulations. When making a reservation, the Front Desk can let you know which dining rooms are currently open. Due current restrictions on capacity in indoor spaces, the Bowling Recreation Center bar is only available for bowlers.
ATTIRE POLICY The dress code is viewed as important and was established by you, the members of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, to compliment the excellence and standards of our Club. Our winter attire policy is club casual. Dress denims are permitted throughout the whole Clubhouse. Casual attire is permitted in the Bowling Recreation Center.
