As we enter the new year and life begins to slow down from the hectic pace of Christmas, remember the GPYC has plenty of exciting events and activities for you to enjoy through the long winter. On January 25th be sure to attend Winter Blast — it is always a highlight of the year with ice sculptures, creative beverages and good company. If you love a good taco, don’t miss the Ultimate Taco Extravaganza on January 11th. We have a very special night planned with Chef tapping his roots frequently visiting his father in Mexico, Mariachis and topflight Tequila tasting. You will also want to be sure to keep a sharp eye out for pop-up events announced through text and email as these sell out fast.

With the holidays behind us, I know many of you will be making New Year’s resolutions. If getting in shape is on that list, the new GPYC Fitness Center is just the place. With our state-of-the-art equipment you can design your own workout plan or, better yet, sign up for personal training with Fitness Director Peter Wendzinski. He can design a plan to keep you in shape as we live through the dark months. In addition, he created a New Year’s Challenge designed to jump start your recovery from too much of everything. Maybe yoga is more your style— if it is be sure to sign up for Lindsay Holder’s yoga classes on January 9th and 23rd. So, grab a friend to help keep you motivated and head over to your Club for a great workout. Of course, after that workout you will be hungry, and Chef Colby has some amazing new menu items planned for the winter months so stop in or make a reservation and enjoy a fantastic meal. Aaron and his team are committed to eliminating the term “shut down” from the club vernacular so take advantage of the numerous dining venues that will rotate throughout the season. Another exciting initiative you will not want to miss is the reinvigorated wine club. Kevin and Kathy Killebrew have teamed with some of our brightest wine loving members to bring back the wonders of the wine world to the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Look for special wine tastings, wine classes, wine sales and maybe even a wine trip (you didn’t hear that from me) in the coming year. The best part is you don’t have to be a wine aficionado to jump on board. There are no wine snobs in this group, and everyone is always welcome. Finally, Chris and I want to thank those of you who attended the 91st Commodore’s Ball. It was truly an honor to host such a wonderful event, and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Special thanks to Chef Colby and the culinary staff for the extraordinary meal, Aaron, Barbara Walkowski, Anna Swartz and the service staff for their support in making the evening a success. Thank you to the ushers and hostesses who did a great job, our sons Henry and Charlie, Ellie and Anna Groustra, Mary Schaden and Patrick Beauregard. Enjoy these winter months. As you can see, there is much to do at the Club, and remember, only 105 days until launch.

NOTES FROM THE MANAGER Looking in the Mirror Happy New Year everyone! While many of us start on our personal New Year’s resolutions to get back in shape and/or drop bad habits, your Club’s Board and Management Team are looking in the mirror to find ways to maximize strengths and improve upon identified weaknesses. We would like to thank everyone who participated in the Membership Survey this past Fall. There were some fantastic highlights and very valuable constructive feedback that is paving the way for positive change in 2020. The Membership Satisfaction Index showed a 10 percent overall improvement since 2017 (86% compared to 76% previously). When asked if the “Club Provides Good Value for the Money,” members responded with a 17% improvement since 2017 (81% compared with 64% previously). The Club will continue to emphasize events and activities that add value to your membership by being a “Club for all seasons” featuring excitement all twelve months of the year. There were also some areas of weakness that my team will be addressing. Based on the survey results, we have identified three key areas: 1) Harborside Grill and Poolside Service/Offerings, 2) Clubhouse Maintenance and Housekeeping, and 3) Redesign of the Front Entrance/Lobby. Your Board and Facilities Team are working on preliminary plans for potential renovation of the Club’s entryway and lobby. This project will commence as funding allows through donations via our 501c3 Foundation. If you are interested in learning more about the designs and how to donate toward this important initiative, please don’t hesitate to contact me. In order to address the Maintenance and Housekeeping deficiencies identified, we are bolstering the staff in those areas, creating more coverage so that there are no lapses and our Club is always pristine. The Harborside Grill and Poolside Service/ Offerings appeared to be the largest opportunity. There were many comments about the slow service and the overall experience. Oddly enough, even though this area was the weakest, it actually improved slightly over the results from 2017. Albert Einstein once said, “we can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” This quote really strikes a chord when it comes to this area of the Club and so rather than try to tinker with the current model, we are throwing the entire thing out for 2020 and starting new. I am looking forward to seeing the membership’s reaction to an entirely new concept to food and beverage offerings at the Harborside Grill, Gazebo Bar and Pool that will allow for quicker service and a more interesting selection. I would like to close by reminding everyone that even though it is January and winter is taking its toll, the Club is as vibrant as ever with tons of fun options for you and your family. Come out and try your aim at Trap Shooting at the Marine Activity Center on Saturdays and Sundays. Catch up with friends and learn to play Paddle Tennis (Monday and Thursday nights drop-in play). Make plans to attend the brand-new Ultimate Taco Extravaganza on January 11 and the Annual Winter Blast Party on January 25. If you are dreaming of summer, make sure to attend the Rendezvous Kick-off Party on January 29 to hear about all the destinations for 2020. Whatever it is you choose to participate in, I look forward to seeing you at the Club! Smooth sailing,

NEWS Annual Club Renovations
The Club will be closed for its annual renovations from Monday, February 17 thru Thursday, March 26. The Club will reopen on Friday, March 27. As always, GPYC members will have reciprocity at other local clubs. Please see page 7 for a list of reciprocal clubs, where GPYC members may dine during our renovations.
The MAST is Now Bi-Monthly, The Grosse Pointer is Quarterly
The Club's MAST newsletter will be changing from monthly to bi-monthly in 2020. Also, the frequency of The Grosse Pointer magazine will change from bi-annual to quarterly. Receiving The MAST every other month will continue to allow members to be well informed about Club news and events, and it will allow Club staff to further improve on new communication vehicles such as the redesigned website, mobile app and new text messaging program. Changing The Grosse Pointer back to quarterly will allow for members to enjoy more timely content in each issue.
Text Messages from GPYC
To enhance our communication with membership, we recently introduced an optional text messaging program. Participants receive key information about Club events and important news items, as well as last-minute updates such as pool/ outdoor facilities closure due to inclement weather. This program is optional, and you may opt out at any time. If the Club does not have your cell phone number and you wish to receive texts from the Club, please email your phone number to Communications Manager Anna Swartz at aswartz@gpyc.org to have it added to our database.
Club to Utilize Online Roster in Lieu of Printed Member Guide
Last-Minute Reservations
Please note that due to the popularity and real-time accuracy of the online GPYC roster, which can be accessed by logging into gpyc.org or the members-only mobile app, a printed member guide will no longer be available, starting in 2020. However, members are still encouraged to send the Club any changes to their business/ home addresses, email addresses and phone numbers. Members can also make these changes by logging onto gpyc.org, clicking on “Members” on the top menu bar, selecting “Roster,” searching for their name, then clicking on the pencil icon to the right of their name. If you would like to submit a roster change directly to the Membership Department or if you have questions about how to login to the website, please contact Anna Swartz at aswartz@ gpyc.org.
Please note that last-minute reservations or count adjustments (two hours or less before an event begins) for events can simply be taken at check-in for the event. No need to call or email the Front Desk. Thank you.
Cancellation Policy Members canceling a reservation for Clubsponsored functions with less than 24 hours’ notice, or not attending the function without giving notice, shall be charged the established price for each person involved. Thank you.
The MAST Deadline Submissions for The MAST can be sent to Anna Swartz at aswartz@gpyc.org. The March/April MAST Deadline is Tuesday, February 4.

I am very proud to introduce to you a great group of members willing to give of their time to be on our: 2020 Harbor Committee Dr. Gary Bill • Pete Blake • Luke Ciaramitaro Doug Dossin • Dr. Steven Grekin Dr. Linas Mastis • Dave Quint • Fred John Reif Dr. Wendy Lucid Board Liaison: Pete Beauregard Strategic Harbor: Robert Galeota
HAPPENINGS
Each member of the committee will be assigned a dock to represent. The responsibility of the dock representative will be to report any and all items of interest from cleanliness to repairs to Alex. Items of concern will be addressed. By now all of you should have received your slip lease agreements for the 2020 boating season. Slips can be returned to the Harbor Office. Slips are at a premium, and we will do our best to be accommodating to all our members’ needs. January and February are the time we start thinking of spring, warm weather and getting our boats ready for spring launch.
Rest assured a main concern of your Harbor Committee will be the potential high water issues that may occur. We will do our best to ensure all members have a problem-free boating season. Members’ thoughts and comments are welcome. We hope we hear from you. Safe Boating, Michael Meda Harbor Chairman

Employee of the Year Facilities Director James Stevenson By General Manager Aaron Wagner
The GPYC recently reinstated its Employee of the Year recognition, and the employee is acknowledged at the Annual Meeting each year. This is a merit-based award, and the GPYC Executive Team and Managers will annually nominate staff members based on their achievements and impact on our Club. I am pleased to announce that the 2018-2019 recipient of this award is Facilities Director James Stevenson. Mr. Stevenson has dealt with more than his fair share of issues this year with the record high water levels and an aging Clubhouse. He always seems to find a way to keep facilities operational. He has spent countless hours day and night monitoring and taking action against the threat of flooding and water damage. This coming year he will spearhead efforts to mitigate these threats as the Army Corps of Engineers are predicting even higher water levels than last years record high. Please join me in congratulating Mr. Stevenson.

Platform Tennis Drop-in Play
Mondays & Thursdays | 6-8 p.m. Join fellow members for platform tennis drop-in play. Platform Tennis is played on raised courts so there can be heaters beneath the court to prevent icing of the playing surface. The playing surface and the paddles used are gritty to allow for better footing and the ability to put serious spin on the balls. The paddles are like those used in Pickleball, though they are heavier as the ball is like a tennis ball in that it has fur but is smaller than a tennis ball. The court is enclosed by chicken wire and players can take a ball off the chicken wire. They are not allowed to play the ball by hitting it to and off the chicken wire. Scoring is like tennis scoring with love-15-30-40 and ad scoring. Games are, as with tennis, played to 6 with a need to win by two or play a tie breaker as agreed to by the players. One person on each team serves until a game is concluded. Serves can be overhand and typically are. If you haven’t played, members will teach you the game swiftly. For questions, email or call David Szymanski at davidjudeski@gmail.com or (313) 590-3334.
Platform Tennis Reservations
Please observe the following guidelines for making court time reservations: • Reservations can be made Wednesday through Sunday by calling the Front Gate at (313) 640-7001 or emailing frontgate@ gpyc.org. • Reservations can be made on Monday and Tuesday by calling Susan Hughes at (313) 640-3188 or emailing shughes@ gpyc.org before 5 p.m. • Reservations can be made no more than four hours in advance. • Only one court can be reserved at a time. If the other court is open, it can be made available for use. • The court may only be reserved for 1 ½ hours at a time. This time cannot be “piggybacked.” If the court is not being used at the end of the reservations, you may continue to play.

Learn to Sail (age 7–11)
Session I: July 13–17 Session II: August 3—7 Session III: August 10—14 This week long session is a perfect sailing introduction for those who love the water but aren’t old enough yet for our learn to sail program. Our instructors will use the sailing simulator and the club’s J22s to get our smallest sailors comfortable on the water. This session will cover basic sailing concepts and water safety.
Session I: June 15—26 Session II: June 29—July 10 Session III: July 20—31 An introduction to the sport of sailing, this course will teach the basics of rigging a boat, boat handling, sailing fundamentals, and water safety. Sailors are paired with one another and learn the basics of steering, trimming the sail, and balancing the boat in an exciting, hands-on way. Returning sailors will build on what they’ve learned and become more independent in the boats, with a focus on upwind and downwind sailing, boat handling, and seamanship. Instructors and sailors utilize the clubs optis, j22s, O’pen Bics and the sailing simulator.
Adventure Sailing (age 12–18)
Session I: June 15–26 Session II: June 29–July 10 Session III: July 20–31 Adventure sailing is for the beginner to advanced teen aged sailor who wants to explore the water and improve their sailing in a fun and casual way. During this two week session sailors will get to sail the clubs j22s, O’pen Bics, 420s, and windsurfers. This class focuses on water safety and seamanship while allowing sailors to experience the joys of being on the water.

MEMBERSHIP As is the case in most industries, studies show that it can cost up to five times more to recruit a new member than to retain an existing member. The Membership Committee understands the need of keeping members engaged and using the Club regularly to retain members. The CEO of the Club Management Association of America recently reported on the “State of the Industry” and outlined the following trends that are significantly impacting clubs: Demographics - Younger generations are more unique, people are living longer, and women are more influential. We need to be aware that each generation needs to be considered when it comes to club offerings. Work Force and Workplace - Management needs to be aware that there are multiple generations of people in the workplace,
Reciprocal Privileges
Your GPYC membership entitles you to not only enjoy the amenities of your home Club, but to reciprocity at yacht clubs worldwide. The general understanding amongst yacht cubs (not country clubs or city clubs) is that our members will receive reciprocal dining privileges. During the winter, many GPYC members find themselves traveling to warmer climates
MATTERS
and it is important that clubs prioritize the work/life balance. There are more specialized positions within clubs such as athletic directors, communication directors, etc. The need for a good team and good culture is critical. Society and Politics - We live in a politically volatile world and clubs need to demonstrate that they are good stewards in their community. Members want to see transparency and want to know that their club is a safe place to be. Economics - Management continues to add programs and services with the mindset that they will raise dues or initiation fees. Clubs are encouraged to be open to different ways to be economically sound. As an example, members are living longer. Maybe clubs should look at senior member eligibility. Evolving Club Components - Management
needs to continue to make it easy for members to use the club. It’s all about the member experience; ie; members are willing to pay more for healthy foods. Health and Wellness - All aspects of physical, mental and social wellness are offerings now in all communities. Clubs should embrace the demand and offer all aspects within the club. Technology - Clubs will want to continue to incorporate technological developments to improve a member’s club experience. As we start off a new year, I will work with management and the GPYC Membership Committee to ensure that we are mindful of these trends as we come up with improved programs and services and work towards a higher rate of retention. Susan Hughes Membership Director
and visiting reciprocal clubs. Here’s a reminder on the procedure for making reciprocal arrangements. These clubs will simply ask for a letter of introduction from the GPYC. If you are traveling or simply want to enjoy a meal at a local yacht club, arrangements can be made by contacting the GPYC. To ensure that we have enough time to process a members’ reciprocity request, please contact us at least a week prior to your planned visit. Please note that there has been a change in terms of who to
contact at the GPYC regarding reciprocity. To make reciprocal arrangements, contact Membership Director Susan Hughes at shughes@gpyc.org or (313) 640-3188. On rare occasions, a club may request your GPYC membership card – you can access your electronic card via the GPYC mobile app. You can also request a plastic membership card from the Membership Office by emailing Anna Swartz at aswartz@gpyc.org.
