It’s another July on Lake St. Clair and members of the GPYC have embraced summer’s arrival. As the weather heats up I’m sure we’ll be thankful for the cool breezes that keep us comfortable around the pool and Gazebo Deck where we enjoy being with family and friends throughout the summer.

If you have noticed some new faces around the club, there is a good reason. We have added 25 new members over the last 3 months and are expecting that we will continue to grow over the summer thanks to our Membership Director Alexa Coole as well as the Membership Committee and Chair Marita Grobbel. In addition to new faces around the club, there are new boats. This season we welcomed 17 new boats to the GPYC Fleet. As this month begins, everyone is looking forward to the Fourth of July and our traditional events – pet parade, pool games, bocce ball, barbeque, and of course our wonderful fireworks display. Details for this annual weekend of celebration can be found in this issue of The Mast as well as the Weekly Buzz. At the end of the month members will make their way to the Up-North Rendezvous at Bay Harbor from August 1-4. There are several dinners and events planned. Come by boat, plane or car – we will have a good time. Melissa and I are also looking forward to the Fleet Review Weekend August 18 – 21. The theme for Friday night’s dock decorating this year is “Vegas Hotels”. So choose your favorite, grab your decorations and decorate your boat and dock. The names of Dock Captains who will coordinate decorating for each dock will be published in the Weekly Buzz later this month. For those who don’t have a boat in the harbor, you are invited to celebrate your own dock party at the Marine Activity Center. Watch for information on how you can join the decorating team. Friday night will feature food and drink and a lot of smiling faces as everyone strolls our beautiful harbor. Of course, we also hope you attend the Fleet Review Cirque du Soleil Gala on Saturday night. It will be a dinner you won’t forget! Be sure to mark your calendars for the many Fleet Review activities that will be available for you and your family. As I have said before, summer is the best time of the year here at the Club and the time goes quickly – enjoy! See you around the club and on the water. Sincerely,

Jason Grobbel Commodore GPYC

NOTES FROM THE MANAGER A New Harborside Grill Experience Over the years, the food and beverage service to the Pool Deck has taken on many forms. Some longstanding members will remember that prior to the pool renovations, the Club served members out of the Fo’c’sle Room adjacent to the Bowling Alley. There was a small service window on the north side of the building and members could venture down to the Fo’c’sle to order food and snacks. As part of the pool renovation in the early 2000’s, the creation of the modern day Harborside Grill changed everything. The HSG began as a window service only venue and has grown into so much more in recent years. Our present day HSG allows members to walk up and order from the window as well as sit down and enjoy a full service meal on the Gazebo Deck. This year I am pleased to reveal some upgrades that we hope you will enjoy. In addition to the current service setup, the HSG will feature a variety of “pop-up” grill stations that will have themes throughout the summer. Check our calendar for the themes and make sure to try each one! These stations will provide more efficient service and will add a fun new dynamic instead of just the same menu experience every day. Speaking of menu, the HSG Menu will change each month of the summer (June, July, August, September) to keep things interesting. We know many of our young families frequent the HSG several times a week, so we want to be sure we are giving everyone the variety that will satisfy. We considered your convenience as well. We are allowing members for the first time to order food items while on the actual Pool Deck. We know how difficult it can be to get the kids out of the Pool and settled into a dining table (if there is a table available), so we will come to you where you are! To top it all off (pun intended), the Facilities Committee has added some beautiful shade sails that will protect a large portion of the deck from the sun. Special thanks to the Starks and Paschke Families for offering their services to make this project happen. With all of this action at the Club, I would like to make sure we are delivering on our promises of quality. If you would like to share any positive comments or constructive feedback, please make sure to email me at awagner@gpyc.org. We love hearing from our members! See you soon at the Club. Smooth sailing,

Aaron Wagner

HARBOR

HAPPENINGS

With summer in full swing, Harbor Master Alex Turner and his team are working hard to keep the harbor clean and safe.

If you have any comments or concerns regarding the Harbor's new floating docks Please email me at cizzi@utsitech.com.

As a courtesy to our members and to the harbor staff PLEASE communicate through the new GPYC Member Concierge Service to order services like food, ice, beer, pump outs, and more as this makes it easier to schedule services needed and acknowledgments of services requested will be sent. Please text your orders or request to (313) 306-2437.

Respectfully Christopher Izzi GPYC Harbor Chair 2022 Harbor Committee

Some boating cliches and meanings

Schedule an in-well pump out during non-peak times, Monday – Thursday to minimize the congestion at our fuel docks during the busy weekend. To do this call the Harbor office or text the GPYC Member Concierge at (313) 306-2437.

Clean Slate

Daily logs were kept on a slab of slate. Each new watch officer would erase the previous entries.

When planning for pump-outs or fuel at the fuel dock, always call the Harbor office at (313) 640-7000 or radio channel 9 prior to heading to the fuel dock for any services.

Devil to Pay

Harbor postings have been sent out and returned. Our harbor is full. You can see the latest harbor posting on the GPYC website.

The "devil" seam which ran along the hull at the deck level, was the most difficult to caulk. To "pay" meant to caulk. Voilá. The sailor had to hang off the deck to caulk the seam and was said to be "between the devil and the deep blue sea."

The rendezvous schedule is on the website and on the GPYC App. If you have not signed up for any rendezvous, please call the front desk and reserve your spot. It is a great way to meet fellow boating members, see our beautiful state from the water, and visit other harbors along the way. Please advise the harbor office of a float plan if you are planning on any extended travel.

Call us to help Rethink your personal or business insurance.

Always use a float plan template, go to www.uscg.org and search float plans.

At Sterling Insurance Group, we make sure you have proper coverage as your needs change over time.

The Harbor Committee would like to remind you of a few key harbor etiquette items: 1. Vessels leaving the harbor have the right of way 2. Swimming is not permitted in the Harbor at any time due to Electrical Shock Drowning 3. Fishing is not permitted in the harbor. It is permitted over the outer East Wall and South Wall areas. Remember to clean your area when finished. 4. When leaving or entering the Harbor, vessels MUST remain inside the NO WAKE navigational buoys. 5. Vessels have the right of way at the Draw Bridge and Swing Bridge traffic. Vessels are to hail the Harbor office via V.H.F. Channel 9 or call 313-640-7000 to open or close either bridge.

SUN & FUN AT THE CLUB

Sailing into Summer We are super excited to have the kids come out and enjoy a summer of on-the-water activities. Our Head Coach/Sailing Director, Christina Noland, will be leading the best coaching staff GPYC has seen. We have brought back some familiar faces and some new ones. All are highly talented and excited to get out on the water and provide a funfilled summer of activities for our members.

Adult sailing is back, and already building some great sailors to grow our waterfront activities. James Cooper provides coaching in our nimble J22's. This program is designed to take adults with no sailing background and build confident sailors ready for solo sails on our J22's. Speak with Jim or our staff about your interests, and we can collaborate to build a program or event that meets your interests. Have a boat or want to race a J22? We would love to hear from you and create opportunities for some adult fun out on the lake! Please be on the lookout for more communications from the waterfront on these opportunities.

There is fun to be had by all in our dynamic and engaging Junior Sailing programs, such as Learn to Sail; this says it all. With or without experience, we will give the kids the skills to confidently take to the water and learn a sport that will last a lifetime! GPYC Junior race programs are designed to engage the competitive characteristics of the sailing youth. Your sailor will build a strong sailing foundation that can lead to many opportunities from dinghy to big boats and a lifetime of friendships and experiences. We also offer a more holistic approach to water activities with our Adventure Sailing program. It will include sailing, boating, swimming, team building, and "Adventure" for those looking to have some great fun on the water this summer. Lastly, Kinder Sailing for the littles is back! It is never to early get out on the lake for some water fun. This is an exciting opportunity for the little ones to get more comfortable on the water and share in the fun. Our staff will take these kids out on our various boats for some memory-building activities and fun. Indeed,

they will come back with smiles, and we will capture the moments to share with you all week long. If you have questions, please let us know.

Just want to get out on the lake on your own? Kayak, inflatable paddle board, windsurfer, and lily pad rentals are available through the Marine Activity Center. Contact to reserve your rental. We are eagerly exploring new opportunities such as Kite Surfing, Wing Foiling, and Wake Foilings to offer our members in the future. If you have an idea that relates to waterfront activities that you would like to see offered at GPYC don't hesitate to reach out to our staff and give us a suggestion. SPOTLIGHT GPYC LIBRARY NOW OPEN

The Heritage Committee is pleased to announce the opening of the GPYC library. Located on the porch of the Tower Pub, it is strictly a reference library, currently containing about 100 non-fiction books with nautical or Great Lakes area-related themes. All books must remain in the library, and those books stored in the locked cabinet may be accessed by contacting the Front Desk for the key. Due to her past extensive library experience, Sue Vogel, wife of Past Commodore Bill Vogel, has volunteered her services as librarian. Members are encouraged to donate books, but please remember only nonfiction nautical related books will be accepted. For more detailed information, see the next issue of The Grosse Pointer or contact any Heritage Committee member. Come up and enjoy some quiet reading in the new GPYC Library!

Fitness

I think I’ll go for a Walk Outside

As the weather gets warmer, the sun stays out longer, summer is the perfect time to kick start your fitness routine, and you don’t even need a gym membership to do it. The simplest, most convenient, most practical, cheapest form of exercise is walking, and your workout starts as soon as you shut the front door behind you. The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week and lists walking as the top form of exercise to get those 150 minutes in. The top five benefits of walking are- it lowers blood pressure, aids in weight loss, relieves stress, increases energy levels, and it is convenient. I challenge each of you to try and take 10,000 steps a day in June, July, and August because before you know it, snow will be back on the ground! As always, please stop by the Fitness Center with any questions, or if you need

to jump start your exercise routine, we offer personal training for $45 for a half hour, or $85 for an hour. Peter Wendzinsk Athletic Director
