In my last article, we talked about the exciting changes to the Spinnaker and Main Dining Room. The new spaces have allowed our culinary team led by Chef Eric Voigt and Food and Beverage Director Gretchen Meeuws to wow the membership.

Our attention is now turning to making the summer season better than ever. Although there are still more projects on our list for VISION 2026, we are focused on optimizing the spaces we have. For example, we will improve Club and Harbor service levels, with a new reservation/order and delivery system. We also have plans to improve the Harborside Grill service and quality, with satellite grill stations to alleviate load on the current grill on busy weekends. New poolside furniture and a new Gazebo shade, with world class outdoor furniture, are slated for the Pool and Gazebo Bar opening this Spring. Additional seating and shade are being added to the Family Recreation Center by re-purposing our current best Gazebo furniture. We are optimizing the use of Club spaces and providing clear scheduling of each room that will be updated weekly in the Buzz and on the App, along with an updated dress code for each space. While all this is happening, we will continue our planning for the future. Regardless of eventual design, the Binnacle can serve three distinct functions for Club members. First, it can serve as the year-round indoor Gazebo Bar where people can gather and mingle. It can also serve as flexible space for banquet pre-cocktails. Finally, it is the perfect venue to enable Monday and Tuesday dining once the pizza oven and sushi station are installed. As we contemplate a design for the Binnacle, we are also working on the engineering design for the new North Terrace. I am happy to report the design will include wheelchair access. The design for the new Harborside Grill will feature an expanded grill that will also allow a small expansion to the South Terrace along with a dumbwaiter for efficient food delivery. Whether it is current initiatives or future planning, it has been my pleasure to work with a Board that is always striving to improve the membership experience and value. NOTES FROM THE MANAGER Our “Third Place” Community Studies show that if you are to live a balanced life, you need three places in which to call your own. The first place is your home. This is where you live and includes all family activities. The second place is work. This place is occupied by whatever it is you do to make a living and earn income to maintain your chosen way of life. It funds the two other “places”. The third place is the place you go to enjoy your hobbies and interests. The third place may include family as well, but it is the place that allows you to unwind from the rigors of daily life. This is what we strive to be for our members. In order to accomplish this goal, we need to offer a diverse array of experiences. Not only do we have to offer it, we need to take it one step further. We need to strive to be the best at each! There is no more apparent time of year than the spring and summer months that our “Third Place Mentality” shows. We have built many new offerings to go along with our traditional staples. We have our aquatics programs, including swimming and the ever popular water aerobics; and the Pool will now feature brand new deck furniture and Ritz Carlton-like service flags at each chair. The Marine Activity Center is receiving some facility upgrades and will continue to have a premier sailing program as well as water toy rentals. Our Family Recreation Center Tennis Program continues to grow in popularity alongside the Pickleball Program that has taken the world by storm! Keep an eye out for many new events at the FRC this year related to those racquet sports and make sure to sign up to take a lesson in either sport. You won’t regret it! Our year round Fitness Program is ready to take care of your every fitness need, and now includes grab and go protein snacks and juices. Last but not least, we have a newly renovated Harbor. This much anticipated project has members planning “staycations” this summer at the Club. With the rising fuel costs and travel issues, why ever leave the GPYC? We are your home away from home. We are your third place! With all of these experiences offered by the Club, I will leave you with one request. Sign up! Our summer program directors are busy preparing for a fun summer ahead! Registration for summer programs will be opening soon - stay tuned to the Weekly Buzz for more updates. We will also be hosting Family Activity Day as a chance for you and your kids to meet the directors. For more information, head to page 10.

Harbor Renovation Camera Stay up to date on all the exciting renovations in the Harbor with our live camera! On the GPYC website, you will find it on the 'Harbor Renovation Camera' page under 'Member Central'. On the GPYC app, it is located on the 'Harbor' page.

Harbor Postings will be sent out via email and posted on the GPYC website under the Harbor tab until boating season begins. Our Harbor has filled up quickly in the past few years – so don’t miss out! Cakes by Christina

The GPYC is proud to offer custom cakes for all occasions, including weddings, made by our new Pastry Chef Christina Wood! She offers a variety of flavors (including gluten free options), fillings and icing. Cakes range in size from six inches to a full sheet. Standard wedding cakes are available in 3 or 5 tiers. Cake orders must be placed at least one week in advance. For more information, please contact the Front Desk at (313) 884-2500 or switchboard@gpyc.org.

Online Dining Reservations

You can now make reservations for our dining rooms through OpenTable! Simply visit our website or phone app, log in, and go to the “Reservations” tab. There, you will see an Open Table widget where you can select the day and time to dine with us. Parties of 8 or more in the Spinnaker or 10 or more in the Main Dining Room will need to call the Front Desk to make a reservation.

A La Carte Dinner Not Available on Event Days

A la carte dinner service will not be available on major GPYC event days. When dinner service is unavailable, we will notify membership through the Weekly Buzz. For future reference, dinner service will be unavailable during these events: Easter, Back to the Club, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Fleet Review, Labor Day, Annual Meeting, Tree Lighting, Commodore’s Ball and Winter Blast.

Grog Shop Manager Jennifer Benoit keeps the online store stocked with all of your favorite GPYC gear, including jackets, polos, travel cups, shirts, hats and more. Cancellation Policy GPYC Business Center

Our Business Center has everything you need to get your daily work done from the comfort of our Tower Pub. Amenities include WiFi, printer, office supplies, coffee machine and snacks. The Business Center can be reserved by visiting gpycbusinesscenter.skedda.com. Two members are allowed in the Business Center at a time, but both slots can be booked by the same member if privacy is needed. The Business Center can also be reserved for meetings.

Members canceling a reservation for Club-sponsored functions with less than 24 hours’ notice, or not attending the function without giving notice, shall be charged the established price for each person involved. Thank you.

Parents – you have the opportunity to enjoy a quiet, relaxing evening at the Club. Drop your kids off at the Kid’s Klub on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 – 10 p.m. Children must be three years old and potty trained. $20 for the first child, $15 for each additional child in the family.

HARBOR Harbor Happenings

Our Harbor Renovations are moving right along, and I fully anticipate them being completed by the time our members are putting their boats in the water. As of this writing, E.C. Korneffel’s team is installing the pilings for each dock, and the new swing bridge is being installed leading out to the East Wall. The team has stayed busy and on pace throughout the cold winter, and I am excited for you all to see the final result. The Harbor Committee will continue to send out Harbor postings until all wells are filled. Second wells will be awarded starting with the fifth posting, so keep an eye out for that.

HAPPENINGS

In April, we will be rolling out a brand-new Harbor Concierge Service. We’ve taken your feedback from last year and found a program that is much simpler to use. The Harbor Concierge Service can be used to order boat services or delivery from the Grog Shop right to your boat. Watch out for the Weekly Buzz or the next Harbor Happenings eblast for more details when this is officially launched. Ice eaters have been pulled out of the water and that spring feeling is in the air. I can’t wait for another beautiful season in the GPYC Harbor. Summer Programs The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club is looking forward to an amazing summer! Our summertime children’s programs continue to grow every year, and allow your children and grandchildren to have a blast in a fun and safe environment. Summer program registration will be available at Family Activity Day, but stay tuned to the Weekly Buzz to know when registration opens online. To learn more about what each summer program has to offer, join us at Family Activity Day on Sunday, April 10! All coaches and leaders will be on site at the Club to answer any of your questions and to help you register for programs. Bring the kids too – it will be a fun afternoon for all.

Day Camp

June 20 – August 12 Day Camp is a great way to keep your kids active and engaged this summer! For children ages 4-12, activities include gardening, cooking classes, STEAM activities (science, technology, engineering, art and math), tennis, pickleball, swimming, splash pad, playscape, sailboat rides and more. Day Camp is offered in both half day and full day increments, with before and after care available as well.

Junior Sailing

June 20 – July 1; July 4 – July 15; July 25 - August 5 Our Junior Sailing program is recognized on a local and national level. We’ve graduated sailors who have gone on to the Olympics and professional sailing careers. Our Junior Sailing program runs every summer and includes sailing lessons, adventure sailing and the GPYC Racing Team.

Junior Tennis June 20 – August 12

Our Tennis Pro, Dmitri Diakonov, and his staff will be offering both a pee wee program and a challenger & tour level program for kids who want to learn tennis. Dmitri is one of 47 PTR Masters of Performance Tennis coaches worldwide as well as a USPTA Elite professional. Dmitri’s team will offer several times this summer for lessons, but if the times don’t work for your family, private lessons can be arranged by emailing tennispro@gpyc.org.

Swim Team

Practice begins June 20 The GPYC Sailfish Swim Team is a competitive swim program offered to members ages 4-17. Our swimmers are grouped by ability and practice in a fun learning environment. Headed by coach Jim Singelyn, the program offers specialized coaching for future Sailfish (ages 4 & up), ages 8 & under, ages 9 & 10 and ages 11& up. The GPYC is one of the original MICSA participants in the 79-year tradition of the Michigan Interclub Swimming Association, a group of 14 clubs located throughout Metro Detroit.

Swim Lessons

Assistant Swim Coach Elizabeth Bourke will be offering both group and private swim lessons this summer. Level 1 swim classes are available for beginner swimmers. Basic skills learned will include breath control, kicking and floating on their front and back.

June 21 – June 30; July 5 – July 14; July 19 – July 28

Level 2 swim classes are geared towards beginner swimmers who are already comfortable in the water. Basic skills include breath control, kicking, floating, freestyle and backstroke. MEMBERSHIP Swing into Spring! There are two significant events happening in April that will be perfect opportunities to showcase the Club and recruit prospective members. GPYC’s Family Activity Day is right around the corner on Sunday April 10 at 1 p.m. As I’m sure you are all aware by now, the event is an opportunity to get better acquainted with all the 2022 Summer Children’s Programs. I encourage all members to invite a friend or family member who may be a prospective member and have some interest in enrolling their children in one or more of GPYC’s programs. There will be fun activities and refreshments for children of all ages. Along with the Summer Program Directors, I will be on hand to answer questions regarding membership.

MATTERS

On Friday, April 22, the GPYC will be celebrating spring with our annual Back to the Club event. The annual themed event is always well attended by the membership at large and members again are encouraged to consider inviting a friend or family member. The event will be a “Golden Opportunity.” If you would like to invite a prospective member, simply email me at shughes@gpyc.org and I will arrange to have their entry fee waived.

I would like to welcome Vanessa Nutting who has transitioned from a GPYC Banquet Server to one of our Front Desk Receptionists. She will work alternate days and evenings with Deborah in an effort for them to have a more balanced home life. She comes from a background in hospitality and previous restaurant management. Before residing in Grosse Pointe Woods for the last 15 years, she lived on Lake St. Clair in Belle River, Ontario, for 20 years. She is the mother to two children, Derek and Danielle, as well as the proud grandmother to Nevaeh (12), Evan (19) and Alec (17). Her personal trainer is her best friend “Cali-Gurl” a two-year-old Goldendoodle. She’s looking forward to a busy, and eventful season for 2022. Welcome Vanessa!

Up Your Alley Our second half of the season is winding down, with only a couple weeks left. We have had some great scores recently. The winner of each league will bowl in the Club Championship, which is on April 20. We are down to the finals in the Men’s and Ladies Individual Club Championship. In the Ladies Division, the top four ladies are coming from the Wednesday Night League: Barbara Alcorn, Joan Retford, Gloria Hinz and Kim Krasemann. The top two ladies will move into the finals. In the Men’s division, the top six bowlers are John Seago, Scott Turnbull, Derek Starks, Michael Cytacki, Pete Beauregard and Kevin O’Brien. The top three will advance to the finals. Look for the results in the May issue of The Mast.

SPORTS

We will continue with our open bowling extended hours. Open bowling is available on Fridays from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturdays from 5 to 10 p.m., and during Sunday Brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Open bowling is also available on Sunday evenings from 3 to 8 p.m. If you would like to reserve a lane, you can email me at gwoods@gpyc.org.

We are also going to have a Monday Night Men’s League in the spring. Members will bowl for six weeks from April 18 to May 23. The cost will be $90. If you are interested, you can email me to reserve your spot. The BRC will remain open again during the summer. Open bowling on Friday and Saturday nights.
