Growing Rural Tourism Conference is an initiative of the Camrose Regional Exhibition.

Tourism is Alberta's third largest industry, ranking behind the Petro-Chemical Industry and Agriculture. It is estimated that there are currently 150,000 full-time, part-time and seasonal jobs in this industry. While this is a very positive position for the industry, the benefits generated by the industry have been traditionally accrued by locations on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, and by the major cities of Alberta. Few of these benefits have been realized by the rural communities that populate the rest of Alberta until now!

Rural communities in Alberta and across Canada have begun looking towards tourism as a viable industry to diversify their local economies. The Growing Rural Tourism Conference brings together groups who have embraced innovative Tourism strategies and partnerships, and those looking at how they might bring new sources of revenue and employment to their own communities. Renowned Rural Tourism experts and participants from a broad cross-section will share successes, challenges, and ideas for future growth. Comments from participants indicate that the conference is a powerful tool in initiating strategic tourism planning. The conference is to be held on February 11 - 13, 2019, and is an opportunity to recognize and showcase the role that communities play in the rural tourism industry.

Nordlys Film & Arts Festival The Nordlys Film & Arts Festival takes place every Family Day Weekend at the historic Bailey Theatre in downtown Camrose. Nordlys (Norwegian for “northern lights”) breaks up the dark days of winter with an eclectic blend of award-winning films from Canada and around the world. Attendees will also be treated to Q&As with special guest filmmakers, a Saturday night feature concert and musical interludes with talented local performers.

Jaywalkers Jamboree 62nd Annual Jaywalkers Jamboree will take place May 31 - June 2, 2019. The Jaywalker's Jamboree features dozens of entertainers, from local dance clubs, bands and singers.

Food vendors serve up an array of foods, from Norwegian lefse (a potato and flour flatbread) slathered in butter and cinnamon sugar, to good old favourites like hot buttered corn on the cob, burgers, fries and mini doughnuts. Pancake breakfast is offered each morning.

West Coast Amusements will be on-site providing midway rides and games for all ages. There's also a special midway area for children, face-painting and much more.

You'll also enjoy the incredible sidewalk sales!

Purple Martin Festival On June 15, 2019, you will have the opportunity to take a walking or bus tour to purple martin colonies in Camrose. Watch the birds hunt and socialize and maybe even take a peek inside a nest!

The purple martin gurus will provide new purple martin landlords and landlords-to-be with all of the information they need to attract and care for their avian friends. Experienced birders and landlords share the tips and tricks that contribute to their success.

Purple Martin females lay an average of 5 pure white eggs, one egg early each morning for several successive days, then incubation begins and lasts for 14-16 days. Purple Martins now need human intervention to provide safe nesting sites, as their preferred natural choices of holes in dead standing trees are no longer easily available. Camrose citizens have significantly increased the number of these beautiful social birds to nest in our community. Historic Downtown Camrose The historical downtown district of Camrose is a place that you don't just visit, you experience it. Downtown Camrose has done a wonderful job of restoring historic commercial buildings and period houses. While these buildings now have new duties, their original use is not forgotten. They have exterior plaques that tell of their part in the history of downtown Camrose. These buildings are now being used to house unique boutiques and specialty retailers that offer everything from clothing stores for all ages, to home décor, furniture (old and new), specialty dining, and craft stores and much more. You can relax and take your time while shopping because you don't have to worry about parking, it is all free here. They have a variety of specialty coffee shops and cafes where you can get together with friends to enjoy great food and excellent, friendly service.

There are a lot of enjoyable events that take place in downtown Camrose. The Chamber of Commerce's Jaywalkers Jamboree in June is a major regional event with rides and vendors throughout the Downtown. A downtown market begins the second Thursday of June and runs until September. The Camrose Show and Shine, the Scarecrow Festival, and Midnight Madness in November are a small sample of the good times to be had.

The Bailey Theatre is Alberta’s oldest historic performing arts theatre alive with music and performance. The Theatre boasts an intimate stage with historic brick wall feature, as well as state-of-the-art lighting, sound and rigging options. Chuck MacLean Arts Centre The Chuck MacLean Arts Centre is home to the Camrose Arts Society. Programs run from September to December and January to June. Heritage Railway Station and Park If you like Museums, we have two splendid sites. The Heritage Railway Station and Park: Anything Trains! Wander inside the 1911 3rd-Class station and tap-out a Morse code message on the telegraph key or have an authentic Victorian tea party in the marvelous King George room.

Camrose & District Centennial Museum The Camrose & District Centennial Museum features 13 heritage and replica buildings, brimming with extraordinary community artifacts including a running 1912 Case Steam Engine, along with many other antique vehicles, tractors and implements.

Attractions Camrose Regional Exhibition The Camrose Regional Exhibition is a multipurpose agriculture, entertainment, education and leisure complex situated on 103 acres of land located one kilometer east of Camrose on Highway 13. The location is a convenient 45 minute drive from the Edmonton International Airport and a three hour drive to the City of Calgary. The facilities are used by provincial and community organizations for conferences, banquets, concerts, educational programs, cattle sales, equestrian events, festivals, trade displays and weddings. In total there are approximately 350 activity days annually at the Camrose Regional Exhibition with an estimated 250,000 - 300,000 people enjoying the many activities and events.

Nature Conservation Centre

In the summer of 2010, Camrose County completed the reclamation of a decommissioned gravel pit and was innovative and forward thinking by incorporating numerous amenities to provide wildlife habitat and a community attraction. Camrose County hopes the Nature Conservation Centre will set the benchmark for all gravel pit reclamations as they believe this project epitomizes what environmentally friendly and beautiful results can emerge from such humble beginnings. After yielding approximately 500,000 cubic metres of gravel, this 37-acre now boasts a nature conservation centre, complete with stocked rainbow trout, children's playground and sand pit, walking trails, migrating and songs birds of the seasons, picnic areas and day camping sites. Little Beaver Lake Offering up many recreational opportunities, Little Beaver Lake is open to kayakists and canoeists alike. A quiet campground surrounded by an abundant forested area is located on the shores of the lake and ensures that bird watching is at its best. Fishing Coal Lake North Provincial Area in the Gywnne Valley, turn N off Hwy 13 onto 822. Continue north on 822 then west on 616.

Pleasure Island Fish Pond - The fish pond is stocked with rainbow and brown trout twice a year and has 10 fishing stations to try your luck at. The pond is equipped with four diffuser aeration systems that operate 24 hours all year long to ensure healthy fish. Take Hwy 13 east of Camrose for 3 km, turn south onto Rg Rd 195 for 1/2 mile. Pond on east side of road.

Pleasure Island Fish Pond - Camrose & District Fish and Game Association features a 2,112 foot walk, complete with two bridges around Pleasure Island Fish Pond. Families are welcome to sit a while and take in the scenic viewpoints, or stroll with their pets to catch various birding activities at 30 birdhouses along the path. Take Hwy 13 east of Camrose for 3 km, turn south onto Rg Rd 195 for 1/2 mile. Pond on east side of road.

Outdoor Ice Skating is a popular family event in rural Camrose and the large flooded rinks on Mirror Lake right in the centre of the City create the perfect atmosphere for a sunny spin on your blades. Access Bill Fowler Mirror Lake Park Visitor Information Centre just north of 48th Ave near 53 St. Lots of space for vehicles in the parking lot and it is all free. Camrose has an additional 13 general public use outdoor rinks located throughout our residential community parks. Tobogganing The beautiful terrain throughout Stoney Creek Valley running through the centre of the City, create natural deep sloping hills that are perfect for tobogganing.

Cross Country Skiing Camrose is well known for its excellent Cross Country Skiing Trails - Trails are well maintained and groomed and provide excitement for both beginners to the more experienced skiers looking for additional challenges. No need to travel great distances to get started - some residents actually access a trail right outside their homes, which makes it easy and fun to stay in shape throughout the winter. General public access - please use Camrose Nordic Centre at Stoney Creek Valley - Access from 39 Ave., Parkview Drive. Up to 18 km loops, easy and intermediate. The annual Ole Uffda Classic Loppet (15 km, 30 km), or Ole's Fun Loopski for all kids (1.5 km, 3 km, 5 km) is open to the public by registering for the run. The event is part of the Cross Country Alberta loppet series, and one you surely don't want to miss out on with our stunning trail system here in Camrose!

Luge Track Our Stoney Creek Valley also provides a perfect location for natural luging. 473 metres of ice track can be accessed from Camrose Nordic Centre.

Programs The Camrose Ski Club offers several winter programs: Learn to Ski; Youth CrossCountry Skiing; Triathlon; Adult Training; and Luge.
