Your Guide to Experience

Port Douglas and Daintree

Where rainforest meets the reef

A Journey to Nature’s Edge

Some places don’t just stick in your memory, they sink into your soul with one visit forever changing the way you see the world. Port Douglas and the Daintree Rainforest are two of those rare, almost mythical destinations where nature runs the show, the air hums with adventure, and “barefoot luxury” isn’t just a phrase, it’s a lifestyle. Wedged between the Great Barrier Reef and the world’s oldest tropical rainforest, the region is more than just a place, it’s a complete experience that stays with you long after you’ve left.

Tourism Port Douglas Daintree acknowledges and pays respect to the land and the traditional practices of its Traditional Owners, their Elders past, present and emerging.

The Call of the Ocean

A shimmering kaleidoscope of blues, the Coral Sea beckons to all visitors of the Port Douglas Daintree region. As enchanting below the surface as it is above, those with an adventurous spirit are the ones who will be rewarded as its true magic is revealed only to those who take to the water.

For an intimate and more luxurious taste of what the reef has to offer, venture on board a sunset cruise with Sailaway, an iconic experience for good reason. For those wanting even more, Quicksilver Group and Ocean Safari will take you to the outer most edges of the Great Barrier Reef giving you access to a pristine underwater world only a handful will get to experience in their lifetime. Snorkel the surface surrounded by vibrant corals, sea turtles and dolphins or dive to its depths under the expert guidance of Scuba IQ.

Ancient Rainforest, Timeless Wonder.

The Daintree. A living, breathing time capsule with over 180 million years of history and culture woven into its emerald canopy. To truly understand its significance, you’ll need to slow to the rhythm of the rainforest and immerse yourself in its tranquillity, best achieved at Daintree Siesta’s Rainforest Connections Walk.

For a deeper cultural connection and to hear the tales of the local Kuku Yalanji people, journey on the Dreamtime Walk at Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre, whose Indigenous guides freely share sacred stories and traditions of the land. Cool off post-walk with a swim in the flowing freshwater pools – an experience that will mean so much more once you understand the bond between man and nature.

Thrill seekers can get an all-new perspective of the rainforest by soaring above the rainforest canopy on Treetops Adventure’s zip line.

For a truly immersive cultural experience, Walk About Adventures provides guided tours led by Kuku Yalanji people, offering insight into bush tucker, Dreamtime stories, and the land’s spiritual significance.

Whether you crave the thrill of discovery or the serenity of stillness, the tropics offer it all—a secluded escape, an open horizon, and the space to simply be.

So, when the urge to escape takes hold, follow it north. Let the rainforest soothe you, let the sea inspire you, and let this place, so rich in wonder, call you back— again and again.

Daintree Village: A timeless escape where nature takes the lead

where nature, culture, and history come together in perfect harmony

Daintree Village may be small, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Time moves a little slower here, allowing nature to take centre stage. Originally settled in 1870 by timber cutters, today the quaint town is home to fewer than 100 people but provides untouched access to the 300 mammals and 400 bird species that call this place home.

Stop past the Croc Xpresso Café to soak in the atmosphere and indulge in a warm cup of fresh coffee and homemade treats while getting to know the friendly locals. On the right day, you might hear stories from those who have called this remote part of the world home for over 50 years.

The best way to explore Daintree Village is by self-driving from Port Douglas, a 50km journey north. Unlike other parts of the Daintree, there’s no need to cross the ferry. It is however, worth stopping at the ferry intersection to pick up fresh, local fruit from the roadside stall for a true taste of the tropics.

The Daintree River is home to one of the world’s most ancient apex predators—the Saltwater Crocodile, so there’s no better place to try and (safely) spot one. A Crocodile Express cruise is a must with their expert guides always able to spot these masters of disguise lurking in the water.

For bird lovers, or even those who don’t yet know they are, a trip with Murray from Daintree River Tours is an experience like no other. His passion and knowledge make every river cruise a discovery, offering a rare opportunity to see some of the most extraordinary bird species in the Daintree.

Escape the grips of the North Queensland heat with a dip at one of the only accessible waterfalls in the Daintree region at Cassowary Falls. Accessible only by arranged tour, you’ll more than likely have the entire falls to yourself for an unforgettable experience within the depths of the rainforest.

Photo: Daintree Village

Daintree Rainforest & Cape Tribulation

Taking the journey across the Daintree River on the iconic ferry is a short yet memorable one and is the literal gateway to a place Sir David Attenborough himself called “the most extraordinary place on Earth”. From here, you’ll pass through many charming communities, eventually reaching the breathtaking views of Cape Tribulation. But along the way, you’ll be tempted by countless other experiences you won’t want to miss.

Spot wildlife, including the elusive cassowary on a Daintree River Cruise, walk among the treetops at the Daintree Discovery Centre, where aerial walkways and a 23m-high tower provide a bird’s-eye view of the lush canopy and cool off at the safe and serene Mason’s Swimming Hole. And don’t forget to make a pitstop at the Daintree Ice Cream Company who make the most incredible ice cream using locally grown, tropical fruits.

Once you arrive at Cape Tribulation, let Ocean Safari whisk you off to the Great Barrier Reef, allowing you to tick off two bucket list places in one day .
