Did you Know?

Fun Fact

Okanagan Lake is approximately 110 km long running north to south through the Okanagan Valley. Kelowna is located on the eastern shore, boasting many beautiful beaches – even mainstreet ends at the lake. To find detailed information to help you pick your beach, check page 46.

The W.R. Bennett Bridge opened in May 2008, replacing the original Okanagan Lake Bridge, built in 1958. It is the only vehicular crossing over Okanagan Lake and the only floating bridge in Canada.

Kelowna's history is rooted in agriculture with an abundance of interesting sites and stories to capture your imagination: •

Armed with new irrigation systems in the early 1900’s, the Valley started shifting away from ranching toward orchards. Learn more about our agricultural roots at the BC Orchard Industry Museum and BC Wine Museum & VQA Wine Shop.

Originally home to the tribes of the Okanagan First Nations, then settlement of the Oblate Missionaries, Kelowna has undergone many transformations. Follow the Heritage Driving Tour to view more of Kelowna’s residential, cultural and community history. Pick up your copy of the tour at the Kelowna Visitor Centre.

The recently refurbished Laurel Packinghouse is a nationally designated heritage landmark and is the oldest and largest standing packing house in BC.

Explore a wide assortment of other historical landmarks including the original Oblate missionary buildings built by Father Pandosy, and Guisachan Heritage Park and House, once the home of Lord and Lady Aberdeen.

Kelowna has a rich athletic history as well, producing many Olympic and National Champions. Visit the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame displays at the Okanagan Heritage Museum to learn about the amazing athletes who call Kelowna home.

In Kelowna, there is always a celebration! Here is just a sampling of the special festivals and cultural events that you can look forward to: •

Okanagan Wine Festivals take place in all four seasons of the year. You can try some of the best wines in North America, learn about viticulture and enjoy live festivities. Chefs and winemakers team up to present unique dining and tasting events throughout the Valley.

More than 15,000 adults and children converge upon June’s Fat Cat Children’s Festival with a themed parade through the downtown corridor, inspiring artistic adventures, interactive activities and performances. Fun for all in the family!

Parks Alive! This series of free daily concerts and performances is hosted at various city parks throughout Kelowna from June to September.

The Mardi Gras Street Festival is fun in the sun for everyone and stretches on through the evening with events and activities throughout Kelowna’s downtown. There’s a children’s activity zone, stage performances and some of the best deals around in participating retail shops and the giant pedestrian zone.

Pushor Mitchell Kelowna Apple Triathlon is as exciting for the spectators as it is for the 1,800 athletes who take part. There are twists and turns through the heart of the city, but the crowd favourite is the transition at Waterfront Park.

Each year, the Okanagan Pride Festival takes place with family friendly entertainment and events throughout the city as we celebrate our solidarity and social diversity.

In early September, it’s common to find Okanagan Lake spotted with Dragon Boats as teams prepare for the annual Dragon Boat Festival later in the month.

WINERIES

Gray Monk Estate Winery. Photo Credit: Tourism Kelowna / Brian Sprout

Kelowna is all about perfect pairings – with over 20 wineries to choose from, let us help you find yours: •

Visit the BC Wine Museum or Discover Wines and enjoy complimentary wine samplings while hearing the inside scoop on the staff’s favourite local wineries.

Sit back, enjoy a glass of wine and listen to music among the vines at CedarCreek Estate Winery – host in 2010 to musicians such as Chantal Kreviazuk, Jessie Farrell and Vonda Shepard. Check their website for details on their upcoming Sunset Concert Series.

Enjoy a spectacular view of Okanagan Lake from St. Hubertus Estate Winery and visit their beautiful wine shop, rebuilt after the original structure was destroyed in the Okanagan Mountain Park Fires of 2003.

Calona Vineyards has the distinction of being British Columbia's original winery established in 1932 and leading the way to establishing the wine industry here.

Stop in at some of the newer farm-gate wineries located in Southeast Kelowna like Camelot with their medieval themed tasting room; OkanaganVilla Estate Winery’s The Vibrant Vine tasting room where the art is as exciting as the wines; and SpierHead Winery nestled on the slopes of the bench that accommodates their underground barrel room. Just a short jaunt across to Garner Road takes you to the House of Rose Winery and their wide range of wines.

Looking for a taste of a different flavour? Make a stop at Urban Distilleries in downtown Kelowna to sample their signature “Spirit Bear” line.

Look for these distinctive road signs

Did you know? There are a number of Guided Tour operators to take you on winery tours. Check pages 48 & 49.

The Kelowna countryside produces a spectacular landscape around every corner, bursting with blossoms in spring and overflowing with harvest bounty in autumn. Things to see: •

Weave through the roads of East Kelowna, stopping to sample the harvest of the day at fruit stands like Don-O-Ray Vegetables, Graziano Orchards and Old Meadows Organic Farm.

Explore the patchwork of farms, orchards and other agricultural attractions that offer tours like Davison Orchards or Gatzke Farm Market just north of the city.

Stroll through the aromatic fields at Okanagan Lavender Herb Farm and visit the gift boutique to discover a myriad of lavender scented products created from their plants.

Discover the benefits of 100% organic herb products harvested from Falcon Ridge Farm’s Echinacea fields.

Take in the beauty of Kelowna’s formal gardens. We have Kasugai Gardens – a serene Japanese garden and the Ven Daam Rose Garden – an elegant rose garden at City Park.

Stock up on all sorts of harvested goods and locally crafted works of art at the Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market, or pick your cherries when they’re in season at Kempf’s Orchards and Arndt Orchards.

Come experience culture and entertainment at any time of the year in Kelowna: •

Feel inspired as you wander through galleries, historic sites, restaurants, shops and antique stores in the downtown Cultural District – within the District's six blocks, there are 18 pieces of public art on display created by local, regional, national and international artists.

Stroll through the Rotary Centre for the Arts, home to a variety of artists' studios, galleries and the Mary Irwin Theatre.

If you’d like to take in some entertainment with dinner, see what’s playing at the Kelowna Actors Studio, the Okanagan's only licensed dinner theatre.

Feeling lucky? Drop by Lake City Casino located in the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort & Conference Centre or Chances Gaming and Entertainment on Springfield Road.

Kelowna Community Theatre is home to the Okanagan Symphony and Ballet Kelowna. Check to see what’s on when you visit Kelowna.

International stars like James Taylor, Elton John, Bryan Adams and Cirque du Soleil have all performed at Prospera Place, which is also the home of the WHL Kelowna Rockets.

Hundreds of artists' works are on display as you stroll through the Lake Country Art Walk in mid September.

Did You Know? Kelowna hosted Break Out West 2010, an indie music showcase culminating with the Western Canadian Music Awards.

There are so many adventures to be had in Kelowna, the list of activities seems endless:

Start your adventures on the lake with the thrills of riding the waves in a boat rented from the Eldorado or Kelowna Marinas, or sit back and enjoy having someone else at the helm with Princess II Cruises or The Lake Lounge.

Hike or bike the Myra Canyon Trestle section of the Kettle Valley Railway. Kettle Valley Railway Cycling Company can outfit you with everything you’ll need to cycle the trails and provide a knowledgeable guide as well. If you are more of a do-it-yourselfer, grab a map and bikes on site from Myra Canyon Bike Rentals.

Take the kids to see the goats at Carmelis Goat Cheese Artisan, play a round of indoor or outdoor mini-golf at Scandia Golf & Games, hit the gas at Kelowna Grand Prix Racing and Lazer Tag, or go stealth at Safari Ridge Adventure Paintball and Outdoor Laser Tag.

Hit the slides and wave pool at H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre or finesse your short game at 19 Greens.

With more than 200 mountain lakes scattered throughout the Kelowna area, there are tons of choices for freshwater angling. Rodney’s REEL Outdoors or Love 2 Fish Charters can get you geared up to go.

Or maybe it’s a bird’s eye view you’re after. Book an air tour of the region with Okanagan Mountain Helicopter, Air-Hart Aviation, Northern Air Support or Valhalla Helicopters.

If you like to travel at a more leisurely pace, take a horseback excursion with Myra Canyon Horseback Riding Ranch.

Gyro Beach Watersports has fun for the entire family with their boat rentals and Giant Waterpark.

Homemade breads and jams will energize you for another adventurous day. Start the day off right with a breakfast at the Bohemian Café, De Dutch Pannekoek House or Good Earth Coffee House & Bakery in Pandosy Village.

Fresh, local ingredients make lunch on the go memorable. Many of the cafés along your route can put together sandwiches and fixings for a picnic to enjoy during your travels.

Mission Hill Family Estate Winery chef, Stephanie Schnepf, brought home the bronze medal from the 2010 Chaine de Rotisseurs, a prestigious international competition held in Helsinki, Finland.

In fact, you can take your pick of award winning eateries with chefs Mark Filatow of Waterfront Restaurant & Wine Bar, Dominique Couton of Bouchons Bistro, Ned Bell of Cabana Grille and Rod Butters of RauDZ Regional Table. These chefs have all won Top Honours in Vancouver Magazine’s 2010 Restaurant Awards.

A meal ‘al fresco’ is always an option in season with numerous outdoor patios at restaurants like The Hotel Eldorado, Manteo's Wild Apple Restaurant & Lounge, Cabana Bar & Grille and Memphis Blues BBQ House.

Italian, Mexican, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Vietnamese, Pub, Bistro, Organic, BBQ, Steakhouse, Regional - whatever you’re craving, Kelowna restaurants have your table ready and set.

After you’ve had a little retail therapy, indulge and rejuvenate at one of the many spas and enjoy the pampering. •

As the center of commerce in the Okanagan, Kelowna offers great shopping excursions for those that love to shop. Choose from unique local shops to national retail chains.

Just steps from the beach and City Park, Kelowna’s downtown has a blend of retail shops, galleries and charming one-of-a-kind boutiques. You'll know you've reached the end of Downtown when you are at the lake!

Explore Pandosy and Tutt Streets lined with quaint shops, art galleries, cafés and funky boutiques.

Slow it down and work out the kinks with a visit to a salon or day spa. You can choose among the deluxe facilities at major hotels and most resorts.

If you’d rather stick with the more traditional spa environment, indulge in a massage, mud wrap or mani/pedi at O Spa or Beyond Wrapture. Consult the spa listings.

Quick tip No outfit is complete without the right foundation! Get personalized fitting services from the experts at Fashion Foundations and be sure to look your best.

Go on, get out of town for the day. We know you’ll be back! The Okanagan Valley is yours to discover: •

NORTH - Pop by Gatzke’s Farm Market in Oyama for fresh fruit and vegetables, an ice cream cone, a piece of delicious homemade pie or all of the above. Take a farm and orchard excursion, or have a picnic at Davison Orchards in Vernon. It’s just a short jaunt down the road for more fun for the kids (of all ages) at Atlantis Waterslides.

SOUTH - Tour the wineries in Naramata, then check out the beaches in Penticton or float down the channel that joins Okanagan and Skaha Lakes. While you’re in the area, count the more than 25 wineries that dot the south end of the valley. And did you know Canada has a desert? Explore the northern tip of the Sonoran Desert in Osoyoos and tour the Nk’Mip Desert and Heritage Centre to learn and experience more.

EAST - Take a scenic tour past Big White and McCulloch Lake, then meander down the Kettle River toward Rock Creek. Circle back toward Kelowna and see some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Maybe you will catch a glimpse of a bear, elk, moose or mountain goat along the way!

WEST - Head west to Fintry Provincial Park and climb the 300 steps up to the Fintry Falls, then finish off with a picnic at the beach. Wind through the charming communities of West Kelowna, Peachland and Summerland. Stop for some beach time at one of the many lakeside hideaways, go for a stroll beneath the leafy canopy of a homestead nut farm or take a ride on the historic Kettle Valley Steam Train near Summerland.
