Welcome to Jasper, your base of adventure Some mountain towns try to attract interest by being trendy. Jasper retains its timeless appeal by being unpretentious — an intimate community that originated as a railway town that just happens to be in the middle of some of the most gorgeous protected wilderness in the world. When you think of escaping your everyday life, how do you picture it? Paddling across a crystalline lake ringed by mountains? Wandering through gorges sculpted by eons of time and water? Soaring in a cable-car among towering mountain peaks? Dining on everything from organic vegan cuisine to local game meats, cooked to perfection? Escaping to Jasper means all this and more. We are a year-round escape. Spring comes to the valley bottom in April and reaches the high country by June. It brings wildflowers and gushing rivers. Summer days are temperate and long, with the sun setting late and rising early. Fall comes in September and October, bringing new colours and clear skies (hello stargazing!). Winter creates a sparkling, snowy landscape perfect for adventures. Whatever mountain adventure you desire, you’re likely to find it in Jasper. All you have to do is venture beyond.

About

Getting Here

Talk to Us

The town of Jasper is in the heart of Jasper National Park. With shimmering glaciers, abundant wildlife, crystalclear lakes, thundering waterfalls, deep canyons and evergreen forest — all surrounded by towering mountains — it's no wonder why the park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s one of only 18 such sites in Canada. At 11,228 square kilometres (4,335 square miles), Jasper National Park is also Canada’s largest park in the Rocky Mountains. And as the second largest Dark Sky Preserve in the world, it's the perfect place to reconnect with nature and marvel at the majesty of the universe.

Even if you don’t have access to a vehicle, there are many ways to reach Jasper. SunDog Tours operates a shuttle between Jasper and Edmonton, as well as Jasper and Banff. Brewster Express offers travel from Calgary to Jasper on a deluxe motor coach. VIA Rail has trips to Jasper from numerous Canadian cities, including Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Prince Rupert. The luxurious Rocky Mountaineer is another fantastic way to ride the rails to Jasper. Once here, get around with one of three different taxi companies, or just rent a bike and explore at your own pace.

Need info? Come by the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) in the heart of town. This historic log and stone building in the heart of the town was once home to Jasper’s first superintendent but now houses all things Parks Canada — including park and backcountry passes, campground updates, wildlife information and more — along with Tourism Jasper’s friendly and knowledgeable team of travel counsellors, many of whom have lived in Jasper their whole lives. Come by anytime for in-person guidance, helpful resources and local tips between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (hours extended in the summer: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.)

B U IL D IN G A BETTER TOMORROW!

For well over a century, visitors coming to Jasper National Park have found beauty beyond imagination. From iconic landmarks like Edith Cavell Mountain to Maligne Lake, these areas have been visited and loved by millions. Over time, the landscape of Jasper National Park has evolved immensely. From the construction of the

world renowned Icefields Parkway beginning in the 1930’s, to the creation of Whistlers Campground in the 1960’s, visitors have used these and many other resources to connect with this very special place. Fast forward to 2018, it is time to bring these aging infrastructures up to the standards of today.

Investments that give our past a future

A fresh look for Whistlers Campground

Parks Canada is investing upwards of $270 million dollars from 2015 to 2020 for major improvements to highways, roads, visitor assets, campgrounds, trails and day-use areas in Jasper National Park.

This year will mark the dawn of a new era for Whistlers Campground. Built over 50 years ago, the time has come to upgrade this facility to meet the requirements of today’s traveller. For the 2019 camping season, Whistler’s Campground will be closed.

In 2018, work will continue on many of the major highways and roads in the park, as well as at the Mount Edith Cavell Day-Use Area. This highly visited destination is expected to reopen in late summer once construction is complete. As you explore the park, enjoy the very popular and recently improved Valley of Five Lakes Day-Use Area; take in a show at the new outdoor theatre at Whistlers Campground; or visit Lake Annette and stroll around the newly paved trail that offers stunning views of Jasper’s extraordinary mountains.

Come prepared! For camping reservations: reservation.pc.gc.ca For the latest road conditions, construction and closures: alberta.511.ca

When the campground reopens in 2020, campers will experience a new walk-in registration portal with shorter wait times and no car line ups. There will be 17 new washroom and shower facilities placed throughout the campground. Visitors can also expect upgraded water, power, and sewer services along with improved campsites and roads. Thank you for your patience as we continue to improve the standards of Jasper National Park for present and future generations.

THINGS T O DO

Jasper in the summertime offers endless adventures for all levels. With trails that wind through beautiful forests up Rocky Mountain peaks, pristine lakes surrounded by gorgeous vistas, and all the comforts of home, Jasper is your base for summer adventure.

DAY 1 MORNING Jasper Motorcycle Tours Start your Jasper visit with an exhilarating road tour through some of the national park’s highlights. Jasper Motorcycle Tours offers sidecar tours on legendary Harley-Davidsons, driven by professional riders. Get fitted into riding leathers and experience the thrill of riding with the wind among mountain peaks. Carrying two guests per sidecar motorcycle, your personal guide/driver will stop for photo opportunities allowing you to switch positions from the back of the bike to sidecar. One, two, or three hour tours are available. In 2007, Jasper Motorcycle Tours established the first adventure of this kind in North America, and has become a Destination Canada Canadian Signature Experience. jaspermotorcycletours.com | 780-931-6100

AFTERNOON Wild Current Outfitters Jasper has many lakes — get a feel for one of its most famous with Wild Current Outfitters’ guided tour of Pyramid Lake. Two to six guests can fit in each hand-crafted canoe (which are designed for maximum stability) and each person can choose to paddle or simply relax and take in the views during this half day tour. In addition to the vessel, they also provide paddles, life jackets, a waterproof bag with blanket, binoculars, map, whistle, and home-baked treats with hot drinks. Keep cameras handy in case of wildlife sightings such as osprey, beaver, moose, black bear, elk, or coyotes. Got more time? This outfitter also organizes multi-day rafting adventures on the mighty Snake Indian River.

EVENINGS Tekarra Restaurant Experience fine dining in a "cabin in the woods" at Tekarra Restaurant. With a menu inspired by regional products such as AAA beef, wild boar and free range chicken, this off-the-beaten path eatery is well worth leaving Jasper’s main drive. Surrounded by towering pines, this unpretentious yet artful restaurant also features an intimate patio with mountain views and a path that leads to the Athabasca River. Inside, large wall art adds to the Canadian appeal, and the appetizers follow a similar theme, with regional charcuterie boards, elk carpaccio and poutine with bacon jam to name a few. tekarrarestaurant.ca | 780-852-4624

DAY 2 MORNING Rocky Mountain Canyoning Descend steep walled gorges and follow water as it’s actively creating new canyons, all while using rope to control your movement. Book a guide with Rocky Mountain Canyoning to explore Two Valley Canyon. Departing from downtown Jasper, this 4.5-hour tour takes visitors deep inside a world that is unlike any other, where you must navigate wet, slippery surfaces and rappel from heights up to 15 meters. All technical equipment will be provided including helmet, harness, wetsuits, neoprene socks and booties, long hydroskin thermal layer and splash top. Other longer tours explore Morro Canyon and Ogre Canyon. Canyoning involves jumping, walking, scrambling, sliding, wading and more, so this trip requires a moderate fitness level (and willingness to get soaked). canyoning.ca

EDGE CONTROL

TEKARRA RESTAURANT

AFTERNOON Edge Control Being in the mountains means being prepared for any kind of weather. Ensure your safety (while also snagging a super stylish and useful souvenir) at Edge Control. This retail store got its start in 1978 as a revolutionary overnight ski tune-up and repair shop. Now conveniently located on Connaught Drive, they offer high quality clothing, footwear and equipment made for and inspired by the mountains, along with extensive rental options. Stocking high-end brands like Mountain Hardwear, Helly Hansen, Obermeyer and Kombi, entering this store is like a trip to the candy shop for anyone with a passion for the outdoors. Summer or winter, you are well advised to drop in. edgecontrol.ca | 780-852-4945

JASPER PARK LODGE BOATHOUSE

EVENING Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Boathouse Bid adieu to the day from Lac Beauvert, where you can rent kayaks, canoes, clipper boats and paddle boats throughout the summer from the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Boathouse. If the sun is out, this natural, glacier-fed lake’s emerald green colour shines, making for a phenomenal place to admire the views. Pause and ponder the fact that the water you’re floating on came via a fascinating underground cave system (known as the Maligne Karst, it’s the longest subterranean drainage system in Canada) that filtered out all the glacier sediment, allowing for the crystal clear waters. Bike rentals are also available if you’d prefer to observe the lake from the trail that encircles it. fairmont.com/jasper | 780-852-3301

LOOK BACK IN TIME The Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives offers an engaging, interactive record of Jasper’s fascinating history. The 11,228 square kilometers of pristine mountain wilderness now known as Jasper may have been officially recognized by the government in 1907, but its history — and its importance — began long before that. The Jasper-Yellowhead Museum & Archives works to not only preserve that history (ten thousand years of it and counting), but to share it. By collecting, preserving and promoting research and artifacts that open a window into the past, today’s visitors can gain a deeper understanding of Jasper National Park and the

Yellowhead Corridor. Located off the main drive, the museum provides the perfect quiet escape for diving into local lore. The permanent Historical Gallery has exhibits on the Indigenous and Métis people of the area, fur trade, the railway, European exploration and early tourism in Jasper National Park. The temporary galleries feature a series of fascinating displays; the 2018 exhibit line-up includes: art by local Lake Edith artists (May), an art series on genocide by Haida Gwaii resident Karel Doruyter (Jun.), an exhibition on wartime internment in Canada (Jul. – Sept.), a dark sky art show by Destanne Norris (Oct.), and the Annual Festival of Trees (Nov. – Dec.) jaspermuseum.org 780-852-3013

JASPER’S HISTORY AS TOLD THROUGH ARTIFACTS These five artifacts represent important periods in Jasper’s timeline. Each one is on display at the museum.

1. ARROWHEADS Much of what we know about the people who made their way to Jasper after crossing the Bering Strait land bridge sometime between 10,000 to 12,000 years ago comes from stone and bone tools they left behind. The museum displays replicas of the projectile points found within Jasper National Park.

2. DAVID THOMPSON’S MUSKET BALLS Canadian icon David Thompson was also among the earliest Europeans to pass through present-day Jasper. From 1810–1811, he travelled up the Athabasca River Valley and through the Continental Divide in search of a new route to the west coast, and would eventually draft the first accurate map of Western Canada.

3. MÉTIS BEADWORK As Jasper became more of a town, Métis resident Suzette Swift was gaining fame in the early 1900s for her intricate beadwork, and for the handmade moccasins she bestowed upon local newborns. She is buried in the Jasper Cemetery, but her creations live on at the museum.

4. ICE AXE FROM MOUNT ALBERTA When Yuko Maki completed the first ascent of Mount Alberta in 1925, he built a rock cairn at the summit to hold the trip’s documentation and an ice axe gifted by a Japanese nobleman. It wasn’t found until more than two decades later, but the axe was snapped and the two pieces were separated; it wasn’t until after the turn of the millenium that the two halves were finally reunited in Jasper.

5. CURLY PHILLIPS’ CANOE Jasper’s renown as a top notch tourism destination started early. Donald Nelson “Curly” Phillips was among the first outfitters who helped drive visitors to the newly minted park throughout the early 20th century. Phillips was exceptionally skilled at building canoes; see an example of his handiwork held aloft at the museum.

ASTORIA HOTEL DE 'D DOG

DE 'D DOG

FOUR GENERATIONS OF ASTORIA Ever since 1925, when a young Greek immigrant opened a cozy hotel on Connaught Dr, the Andrew family has been providing visitors a friendly basecamp from which to launch their adventures. George Andrew basically grew up in the hotel that he now owns. As a boy, he helped with the gardening, housekeeping, and eventually, the managing duties alongside with his father Socrates. His grandfather (and namesake) Papa George had owned the hotel before then, and his great uncle Paul before that. Today, two

22

of George’s grown children work there too. Indeed, the Astoria has always been home — not only to the Andrew family, but to the legions of patrons who come through every year and stay in its rooms, eat at its restaurant and socialize at its pub. Originally called Hotel Cavell, it was renamed the Astoria Hotel in 1927 (after a river that runs by Mount Edith Cavell) when the authorities of the time objected to the hotel’s addition of a beer parlour while touting the name of a heroic war nurse. The rooms are comfortable and modernized. The hotel was built when communal bathrooms were

GEORGE ANDRE W

the norm, and the later addition of in-room facilities adds to the cozy, historic feel of the lodgings. This is a place to rest your head after a full day of adventures in the mountains (a goal easily achieved since the hotel is within walking distance of many local attractions). Ski storage and shuttles are available, and dogs are permitted for a small fee. With its immediately recognizable peaked mountain lodge architecture and grand views of the Maligne Range, the Astoria is almost as quintessentially Jasper as the Andrew family itself. astoriahotel.com 780-852-3351

Hi story Makers

DE’D DOG

Shortly after the hotel opened, a pub (then called Astoria Bar — it wasn’t rechristened the De’d Dog Bar & Grill until 1995) was added to the building’s north side. It’s always been a community hub. In fact, before being annexed into the bar, part of the building was, at various points in time: a barber shop, Jasper’s first Radio Shack, and Joe Clark’s campaign office before he became Canada’s Prime Minister. These days, the De’d Dog is one of the town’s most popular and beloved places to unwind with a beer and good meal, play a round of pool, or to observe Jasper locals in their natural habitat. Here is a microcosm of the local vibe: a casual, close-knit

community that lives for all the fun, awesome glory that the surrounding mountains have to offer. There’s respect for the mountains’ power too: one of the walls is covered with photos of friends and family members who lost their lives in mountaineering accidents, and every once in a while a beer will be placed beneath one of the pictures while old pals lift a glass in their fallen buddy’s honour. Sometimes a quiet familiar haven of comfort food, sometimes a bopping party with live music and various brews, this is one local nook that mustn’t be missed.

ESTELLE, JASPER LOCAL

“It's like the locals' living room” PAPA GEORGE’S

If the Astoria Hotel is the bedroom, Papa George’s is the dining room. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this family-friendly eatery serves up tasty homestyle cuisine featuring authentic Alberta proteins like wild boar, elk, venison and bison. Connoisseurs can select their vintage of choice from the custom designed walk-in wine cellar, and recent renovations are bringing the kitchen to a whole new level. The decor is Rocky Mountain modern with a touch of Tuscan stylings, and a gorgeous central fireplace (built with local rock that can also be found in houses around town) adds to the relaxing feel. In the summer, it boasts one of the best patios in town. It is tradition for the men in the Andrew family to have George somewhere in their name. The original Papa George had a sense of humour — he and Paul would often play pranks on each other — and when business was slow, he’d call orders out to the chef on his way into the kitchen as if he weren’t working as both waiter and cook! papageorgesjasper.com 780-852-2260 PAPA GEORGE 'S

FOLLOWING THE FLOW Jasper's Whitewater Rafting has been in business since 1971, making it Canada’s oldest commercial rafting company. Today, it gives visitors a taste of what the early Voyageurs might have experienced. Before Highway 16, before the Icefields Parkway, the fastest (and for a while the only) thoroughfare in and out of Jasper was the Athabasca River. From its source at the Columbia Icefield it flows swiftly through the national park on its path toward the Arctic Ocean, and served as lifeline for the region’s First Nations (the

Travel

river’s name comes from an anglicized Cree word meaning ‘grass or reeds here and there’). The fur trade brought more water traffic, and eventually, many years down the line, it became a hub for whitewater rafters. When Mark Howe, the current owner of Jasper’s original whitewater outfitter, started working at the company in 1984 he thought it would just be a summer job to help pay off his history degree. But it turned into his life’s passion. Jasper 's Whitewater Rafting has three available tours — two on the Athabasca and one on the Sunwapta. From

a two hour introductory excursion to a rollicking three hour tour that starts at the base of Athabasca Falls, this river offers great canyon views and plenty of Class 2 white water rapids, which will get the heart pumping but aren’t so extreme that grandpa can’t ride (whitewater is ranked on an international scale from an easy 1 to a very difficult 6). For those who seek a bit more excitement, the Sunwapta River tour (three and half hour round trip) will challenge physically active adventure seekers. Although the first half of the trip involves gentle and scenic paddling, the latter portion is where rafters get a more nuanced

understanding of the river’s name (in the Stoney Nakoda language it means turbulent waters). With sustained white water up to Class 3+, this run is tailored for people who are physically fit and strong swimmers. Running rain or shine, from May to early October, Jasper Whitewater Rafting provides licensed guides, wetsuits, life jackets, paddle jackets, neoprene booties (also wind pants, toques and neoprene mitts if the weather’s bad). Guests need only bring their enthusiasm, a bathing suit and a T-shirt. raftingjasper.com 1-800-557-7238

Marilyn Monroe. Bing Crosby. Mark Messier. heritage hotel offers award-winning service with the charm and ambiance of days gone by. Originally a grocery store and ladies wear shop with a rooming house upstairs, the hotel officially came into its own in 1921 when then owner Douglas Woolley expanded into the adjoining building. Eventually the wood frame was replaced with the three-story brick icon that still towers over the corner of Patricia and Miette. Boasting a large, elegant rotunda decked out with leather seating, trophy heads and exotic palms, it was known as the handsomest hotel in town. Although reserving a room is no longer $1.50 a night, the hotel has retained its love of lush flooring, fine furniture and decorative megafauna. It is old world flare with new world conveniences. Among those conveniences are multiple on-site leisure joints. O’Shea's Restaurant offers one of the

best breakfasts in town, a sports lounge shows the latest game on a 90-inch HD plasma and a popular nightclub hosts live music throughout the year. And as the only downtown hotel with a generator, if the power goes out in Jasper, the hotel continues to run (and serve fresh food) They might also have the coldest beer on tap thanks to a recently installed subzero system. For a different kind of fun, guests also receive complimentary passes to the Jasper Activity and Aquatic Centres. After 97 years of operation, the Athabasca hotel remains a well-known gem within the Jasper town site. Whether you’re heading there for a quick bite or a week-long stay, you’re sure to get a nostalgic look into Jasper’s past.

LEGACY ON THE GREENS As one of Stanley Thompson’s crowning achievements, the iconic 18-hole golf course at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is celebrated for its historic standing and topnotch views, both of which make it one of the world’s best places to tee off.

Its story since opening in 1925 is fascinating and impressive — after falling into disrepair during the Second World War it was restored to its original glory (with some new, modern perks) and has, over the years, accrued many awards — but its pre-launch history is arguably even more remarkable. The reason was rocks. The valley was full of them, and it made shaping the land incredibly difficult. It took 50 teams of horses and 200 men working together for a year in order to clear the debris and turn boulders into benched tees, and haul soil (first by rail, then by horse and buggy) from a farm near Edmonton. “It’s phenomenal the amount

THE ART OF JASPER Powerful art is a visual and cultural reflection of a place. See the Rockies through a different lens at the world class Mountain Galleries. “The energy captured in a wellcrafted work of original art often provides a very deep emotional experience,” says Wendy Wacko. As an artist, filmmaker, owner of Jasper’s preeminent art gallery, and bonafide Jasper icon, she would know. Mountain Galleries is an oasis of museum-quality fine art. Within its doors awaits an astounding experience: extraordinary, one-of-a-kind works fill the space, all created by top Canadian artists (including some locals) who have explored and been inspired by the Jasper region.

Mountain Galleries is one of the largest commercial galleries in Western Canada, and since opening its doors in 1992, has expanded to locations in Banff and Whistler. Located in the Beauvert Promenade at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, the flagship gallery also showcases the work of top carvers and painters that have tremendous historic value. “We accept our role as educators,” says Wacko, adding that the pieces illustrate “a depth of knowledge that is universal and provides a unique lens for our guests and visitors to remember Jasper.” Wacko’s commitment to excellence and 40 years of experience in the arts (she has more than a dozen art shows to her name and her last exhibition’s title, “Venture Beyond,” was inspired by Jasper’s motto), along

with a team of highly trained and knowledgeable staff, help to create an engaging space that begs further exploration. Mountain Galleries works to spread beauty through the world, but not only by selling gorgeous original art — it also moves from the ground up, mentoring local artists, providing scholarships and local workshops, and supporting a number of charitable organizations and community initiatives. Through its Artist-inResidence program, professional artists can take advantage of the gallery’s 2,500 square feet of studio space, engage with the public, and gain deeper inspiration from an area that has, for obvious reasons, become an international destination for landscape painting. mountaingalleries.com 780-852-5378

INDIGENOUS INFLUENCE

Air, earth, fire, and water. Together these elements form a core cultural concept within many Indigenous communities. And as the only hotel in Jasper that is First Nation-owned, the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre incorporates all four into its design and philosophy. As such, the main lobby was designed as a soaring atrium, with

skylights that give an airy feel to the space (not to mention 18 hours of natural light during the summer). The earth is represented by the omnipresent reclaimed wood, lobby plants and stonework. Flames crackle from within a three-story-tall, tipi-shaped fireplace in the middle of the room and water is factored in with an indoor pool, hot tub and new steam room which duplicates the classic sweat lodge (these facilities also happen to provide guests a lovely, unique spot to relax their muscles after a long day out in the park). These thoughtful architecture details, along with the Indigenous artwork (including pieces by Benjamin Chee Chee and Isaac Bignell) and historical Jasper photographs that decorate the walls, all combine to give the 152-room hotel a rustic charm that blends nicely with the mountains visible from many of the guest windows.

The Indigenous philosophies are extended to dining.

5 KEYS TO JASPER’S AMAZING CULTURE

With a nearby organic farm supplying around half of the summer produce for three restaurants (Walter’s Dining Room, Hearthstone Lounge and Champs Sports Lounge), as well nine huge rooftop garden planters, the Sawridge espouses a holistic view toward food that translates into sustainable, authentic deliciousness. There's also in-house smokers and menus that feature select traditional foods with Cree translations of many items.

1

FESTIVE WINTERS

When the temperature dips, Jasper gets ready to party. Across three themed weekends in January, while the landscape is sparkling and still, the community comes alive with colour, flavours and adventure. From skiing at Marmot Basin to feasting at Fooda-Palooza to racing fat bikes, the Jasper in January festival celebrates the real Rockies.

Over the course of nine years, the Jasper Pride Festival has grown from just a few dozen to nearly 1,000 participants, making it Alberta's third largest Pride celebration. Organized each spring, the festival not only brings in top talent and good times, but also helps foster the inclusive culture that makes Jasper so special.

SEEING SPIRIT ISLAND When artist and explorer Mary Schäffer became the first European to lay eyes on Maligne Lake in 1908, she declared that “if Lake Louise is a pearl, Maligne is the entire pearl necklace.” The description was apt. Sitting within its steep-sided, mountain-ringed canyon, Maligne Lake offers some of the most interesting and spectacular scenery found anywhere in the world, and Spirit Island is arguably one of the most photographed places in the Canadian Rockies.

FRIENDLY COOPERATION

In small towns everyone has to pull together to make amazing things happen. Much like other Jasperites, Jordan and Elsa prioritize giving back to the community that they love so much. There’s an authentic, deep respect for nature here, and it shows in everything. PROTECT THE PARK National Parks are unique places and therefore require unique rules to protect them. Help preserve Jasper’s special status as a raw, beautiful wilderness for all future visitors by following these guidelines.

32

GARBAGE

Dispose of all garbage in designated bear-safe bins. In the backcountry, remember to pack out whatever you pack in. Do not dispose of garbage in pit toilets—it attracts animals.

VEHICLES

Vehicles must remain on hardened surfaces, paved and gravel roads. The use of quads, snowmobiles, dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles is prohibited. Use of gas engines on any body of water in Jasper is prohibited.

Patricia Lake Bungalows

CAMPING

NATURAL OBJECTS

DOGS

TRAILS

Camp only at designated campsites. Do not collect deadfall or cut branches for fires (which are permitted only in the provided receptacles). Never leave a fire unattended, and put it out before you leave. Wild animals see dogs as either prey or predator. All dogs must be kept on leash at all times while in a national park. Dogs are prohibited from some backcountry areas to protect caribou.

It is illegal to collect plants, animals, animal parts (including antlers), fossils and natural objects. If you believe you have found something significant, leave the item in place and report your finding to the nearest Parks Centre. Shortcutting between trail switchbacks damages both the soil and plant life. This not only ruins the look of an area, but makes it susceptible to further damage by erosion.

Culture Creators

STAY GREEN WITH PINE BUNGALOWS Tucked alongside the Athabasca River, these cabins are not only a cozy refuge from the digital rat race, they’ve also set the bar for sustainable tourism and bolster Jasper’s environmental mandate. When owner Michal Wasuita tore down the network of cabins originally built in the 1930s by the charismatic-yet-contentious Colonel Tommy Walkenden and rebuilt them — this time with a host of modern, earth-friendly elements — he didn’t do so with the goal of winning lots of awards. But win awards he did.

Pocahontas Cabins

Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre

In fact, ever since 1998 when Parks Canada officially recognized Pine Bungalows for its environmental leadership, there has been a steady stream of honours bestowed upon the historical accommodations from the municipal, provincial and even national level. Most recently, the leading international certification body for environmental lodging and the Hotel Association of Canada awarded Pine Bungalows with the 2016 Green Key Environment Award of Excellence for “developing a culture towards integrating environmental management practices that improve everyday

operations and the bottom line, while maintaining quality service and meeting guest expectations.” Their sustainable initiatives are widespread and varied; everything from reusable mop heads to a laundry system that cleans with ozone instead of hot water has been integrated into the set-up. Besides the warm glow you get for staying in environmentally sustainable accommodations, Pine Bungalows also fosters a reconnection with the environment itself. Relax with loved ones — sans wifi, telephone, microwave or television — next to a campfire under the dark sky. Spot wildlife wandering through the 11 naturally landscaped acres along the river. Note: free wifi is provided to guests staying in the Conference Centre. With cards and cribbage for sale on-site and freely available informational pamphlets that detail proper bear etiquette (among other topics), guests are encouraged to explore a renewed appreciation for nature. Making dinner is a snap thanks to a small grocery shop, steel box barbeques and picnic tables. There are many different types of accommodations available, including accessible units.

SHRED HEAVEN Over 400 cm of snow blankets Marmot Basin from November until May, making for an exceptional ski resort with scenic views and short lift lines. And with a new off-piste section of the mountain now open to experienced skiers, the terrain is more varied than ever.

As the northernmost Rocky Mountain ski area with the highest base elevation in Canada, Marmot Basin ski resort enjoys abundant dry, light and fluffy snow that is a dream to ski and snowboard. Both novices and experts can explore a wide variety of perfectly groomed runs on four mountain faces, along with high alpine bowls, treed runs, and steep chutes filled with Rocky Mountain powder snow. Seven modern lifts (including three high-speed quads) ensure that the day is spent playing on the hill and not waiting in line. The lifts also offer a chance to rest and take in the breathtaking mountain scenery that surrounds Marmot Basin. Marmot’s northern latitude makes the springtime conditions on the hill unbeatable. On low-snow days, a state-of-the-art snow-making system makes up the difference, allowing skiers and snowboarders to enjoy superb snow conditions until the very last day of the season.

As far as terrain goes, there’s something for every level, from bunny hill beginners to terrain park experts. The latter category now has even more room to play, thanks to a newly opened section of the mountain known as Tres Hombres. This large, north-facing and treeless slope is about 18 hectares in size and provides some of the very best off-piste advanced and expert terrain in the Canadian Rockies. Advanced skiers and boarders covet the area’s powder-filled bowls and chutes that descend 367 vertical metres, making Tres Hombres the longest, uninterrupted fall-line. With multiple daily ski shuttles running from many of the town’s hotels to the hill, there’s no excuse not to hit the slopes. marmotbasin.com | 780-852-3816

SECRETS OF THE LAKE During the Second World War, Patricia Lake was home to a covert construction project so classified that even the builders didn’t know what they were making. The goal: build an aircraft carrier for the Allies out of wood pulp and ice. Today, the only way to explore the sunken remains of Project Habbakuk is with Jasper Dive Adventures. Beneath the crystal clear waters of Patricia Lake lies a hidden piece of Jasper’s history. Jasper Dive Adventures offers a unique opportunity to explore that history: certified scuba dive instructors lead the way to a skeletal wreck, codenamed Project Habbakuk. Learn the fascinating story behind the project, including its termination in 1943, when the project was deemed no longer needed and the fully operational vessel was stripped of its reusable parts and sunk to the lake floor. For safety reasons, the Habbakuk dive requires all participating divers to have dry suit experience, and be open water certified with

RAFTING JASPER a minimum of 25 logged dives. Although this particular tour is only open to experienced divers, Jasper Dive Adventures also offers certification courses for a variety of skill levels. The Discover Scuba course is a fun introduction to the world of diving, and is done in a shallow and confined water setting. The open water scuba diving certification teaches basic principles, and will allow you to dive anywhere in the world. Time is spent between classroom, theory, pool training sessions and four open water dives. Step up to the 16-hour advanced open water scuba diving course to practice many speciality activities such as deep diving, night diving, wreck diving and many more. Or, if all you need is an hour-long refresher course, that’s on the menu too.

Adventures on the water show the national park from a whole new perspective, so it’s no wonder that whitewater rafting has become one of Jasper’s most popular summer activities. Explore the top rafting rivers below, and learn the local companies that offer trips on each.

JASPER RAFTING ADVENTURES

With a focus on creating lasting memories, the trained and committed guides from Jasper's newest whitewater rafting company share incredible experiences for the whole family with the most current gear. The magnificent scenery of the Canadian Rockies and Jasper National Park surrounds you while you raft. Retrace the steps of early explorers and listen to the history of Jasper, the park, and all it has to offer. Look for wildlife along the river banks or simply enjoy the lively whitewater rapids. Operating since 1990, this company started small and is dedicated to remaining small. Combine any of its trips (lower Athabasca, upper Athabasca or Sunwapta) into a Peak to Paddle package that includes a flight on the Jasper SkyTram (offer is only available online, book at least 48 hours in advance). jasperraftingadventures.com | 780-852-4292

For those who want some fascinating underwater exploration while remaining warm and dry then dry suit diving is for you. The highly acclaimed 20hour rescue diver course teaches the diver to assess and recognize emergency dive situations under and above the water, self-rescue, and rescue of other divers.

SWIM How often do you get to splash around in the clear waters of a wild, mountain-ringed lake? Although the water might be a tad chilly, Lake Annette, Pyramid Lake and Lake Edith all have lovely sandy beaches and the former two also offer picnic areas with fire rings with grills and stroller-friendly paved paths.

DIVE

BOAT CRUISE

Located on crystal clear Patricia Lake, Jasper Dive Adventures offers a unique underwater experience for visitors to the park. The certified PADI Scuba Dive instructors offer courses for all levels, from open water diving to rescue diving. Already certified? Take a guided tour to the WWII wreck in Patricia Lake, code named Project Habbakuk.

CROSS COUNTRY SKI Once Jasper's lakes freeze over, they provide the perfect surface for easy, scenic crosscountry skiing. But Jasper has a huge range of trails that cater to various skill levels, from flat, leisurely loops to longer, more challenging routes. Rent a pair of skis from Edge Control, grab a trail map and head out to enjoy the beautiful valleys, magnificent lakes and mountain scenery.

Experience Jasper’s famous Spirit Island. This worldrenowned landmark is only accessible by water, and located on Maligne Lake — the largest glacial fed lake in the Canadian Rockies. The interpretive Maligne Lake Cruise, offered by Pursuit, is a great way to see and learn about this iconic lake scene.

SNOWSHOE Jasper’s lakes have plenty of room for this popular winter activity. If conditions are right, snowshoeing grants access to terrain that even cross-country skiers have trouble reaching. Walks & Talks provides snowshoes, transportation and guidance along trails that are selected to take advantage of the best snow conditions of the day.

HIKING With a massive network of lakeside trails, hiking is the perfect way to absorb the beauty of Jasper on foot. Whether you’d prefer a short stroll or trek all day in rugged terrain, there’s a trail for you. Walks & Talks offers guided tours (led by a longtime Jasper local) that overlook Lake Annette, Lake Edith and Pyramid Lake.

SKATE Take part in a classic Canadian winter pastime and feel yourself glide over a frozen Rocky Mountain lake. Popular locales for skating include Lake Mildred and Pyramid Lake. The former has a groomed skating rink offering a roundthe-lake oval and hockey rinks for pick-up games; skate rentals are available at the Fairmont ’s nearby winter rental shop.

BIKE

PADDLEBOARD

Stand up paddleboarding is one of today’s fastest growing water sports. It works exactly how you’d expect (standing up on a long floating board and paddling) and is a great way to experience the calm surfaces of Jasper’s lakes. Pure Outdoors rents out and delivers to the lake SUPs, along with a number of other vessels, including sea kayaks and fishing kayaks.

CANOE What could be more iconic than canoeing through the Rockies? Grab a friend and glide through Lac Beauvert to admire the emerald green against the mountain backdrop. If you don’t have your own canoe, grab a rental from the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge Boathouse.

FAT BIKE Experience Jasper’s awe-inspiring winter cycling terrain by fat biking along frozen paths and ice-covered lakes. With tires that are almost twice the size of regular mountain biking tires, this fast-growing sport allows cyclists to stay on top of the snow rather than fighting against it. From the Fairmont Golf Club (where you can rent a bike), ride along the marked trail towards Lake Annette, returning by way of Trefoil Lake, to see the different forests and mountains along the way.

SLEIGH RIDES Make some horse friends with Jasper Park Riding Stables! On Pyramid Lake, their matched teams of horses pull oldfashioned Western sleighs decked out with bells and outfitted with comfortable seats and warm throw blankets, making for a fun and family-friendly experience. The rides last at least a half an hour, and are available throughout the winter.

DOG SLEDDING Climb aboard one of Canada’s oldest forms of winter transportation: a dog sled. As you glide over the snow, sit back and relax, or take a turn driving your team of friendly Alaskan huskies. Don’t miss the Jasper in January festival, when local outfitter Cold Fire Creek Dogsledding offers runs on Pyramid Lake.

Tours are conducted in vehicles that have thoughtful design details such as oversized sightseeing

windows (some have sliding windows that allow unimpeded views of the surrounding views for photographers). SunDog operates year-round, and is one of the only local tour companies to offer dedicated wildlife spotting tours (to see more of their great tour options, see sidebar below). Departures are scheduled for times when the chances of spotting native fauna are most likely, and although it’s impossible to guarantee the appearance of one of Jasper’s wild creatures, the guides are trained to spot the park’s most iconic wildlife, both big and small. Guests will learn all about how these animals contribute to the rich history, geology and ecology of Jasper National Park and how they survive the mountain winters. Primarily a mini-coach tour with minimal walking (total duration is 3 to 3.5 hours), this tour is also a great way to see some of the park’s most beautiful scenery. Conveniently located in two locations within Jasper, SunDog Tour Co. also acts as a central reservation centre for most activity providers in the national park. sundogtours.com 780-852-4 056

A PLACE TO RECHARGE Mountain views. Lakeside recreation. Peaceful cabins. Patricia Lake Bungalows is a perfect place to rejuvenate. When you turn down the private, tree-lined road that leads to Patricia Lake Bungalows, it’s like entering a different world. The hustle and bustle of town has faded and a calm tranquility descends from Pyramid Mountain as the lake comes into view. From within their secluded patch of forest, located five kilometers from the Jasper townsite, these family owned

and operated cottages offer a clean, comfortable and charming hideaway. Rediscover the beauty of a quiet evening around a lakeside fire, or a morning walk along hiking trails that lead straight from your doorstep. With fully equipped kitchenettes, complimentary in-room coffee, fireplaces, and private picnic tables, each cottage is a selfsufficient refuge. However, strangers often become friends around the communal barbeque, 10 person outdoor hot tub and playground (childcare is available for your convenience). A small library is also available, along

with complimentary DVD movies, indoor board games, and various sport equipment (including: volleyball, basketball, croquet, bocce, soccer, and badminton). With the lake right there, don’t miss the chance to explore its serene waters using the canoe and kayak rentals, or dip beneath the surface with a private onsite SCUBA lesson with PADI certified instructors from Jasper Dive Adventures (see pg. 36 for more details). For a more exclusive experience, seek repose at “The Grove”, a network of ten luxury one

or two bedroom suites with spectacular views, mountain rock fireplaces, fully equipped kitchens (that means microwaves and dishwashers), private outdoor patios with gas barbeques, and more. Patricia Lake Bungalows is open May 1st to Thanksgiving weekend, and for the past quarter century they’ve held a pumpkin carving extravaganza for the guests on closing weekend that’s effectively turned many into longstanding repeat guests. patricialakebungalows.com 780-852-3560 PATRICIA L AKE BUNGALOWS

FLOATING WITH THE FAMILY Explore a calm section of the Athabasca River in specially designed rafts that offer a safe and comfortable ride that anyone of any age will enjoy. When people think of rafting, they sometimes imagine a riproaring ride down a raging river. But with Jasper Raft Tours, visitors can experience all the wild scenery and novelty of one of Canada’s oldest transportation methods, but with more moderate

bumps and wave navigation. Anyone from toddlers to seniors can participate in the tours, which are led by national park-licensed guides who provide commentary on the human and natural history of Jasper while navigating you along the same route used by the fur traders over two centuries ago. With specially designed, seven-meter-long rafts that are stable enough to carry barrels full of water without spilling too much, these two to three hour round trips (time on river ranges from one hour to an hour and a half ) are great for those looking for a more mild adventure. Jasper Raft Tours has taken disabled people, ninety seven year olds, people with oxygen tanks and people in wheelchairs. Although the ride is extremely safe and gentle with

many calm stretches surrounded by stunning mountain vistas, rafters should wear casual clothing and footwear they don’t mind getting wet, in case they get splashed while traversing some small, easy sets of rapids. The rafts can accommodate up to 24 people, all of whom are free to sit back and enjoy the scenery as the guide does all the rowing. To help solidify your memories of the day a professional photographer will take your photo of your raft trip (you will have the opportunity to purchase the photo at the end). Rafters are welcome to bring their own cameras on the excursion (wildlife sightings are common!) but do so at their own risk and responsibility. jasperrafttours.com 780-852-2665

Named after Jasper’s town mascot, this honey beer is brewed with a touch of coriander, Mt. Hood hops and served with a slice of lime.

BRING ON THE BREW Jasper Brewing Co.’s unique combination of globallysourced hops and malts with pure and local glacial water makes for a draft that puts the fresh in refreshment, and will have you saying ‘Another!’

As the first brewery to open within a national park, Jasper Brewing Co. has evolved over the past 14 years to become a beloved go-to spot for upscale pub fare and craft beers with friends. Started by three young born-and-raised Jasperites, the business won hearts for their dedication to localizing the beer experience by making authentic, fresh craft products using time-tested recipes and methods. Unlike most commercial breweries, the Brewpub, as it’s known locally, does nothing to the base water except remove the chlorine added to it. The beer is made with real glacial water and all the minerals that come with it. A special brewing process is used to help conserve water, as well as

the energy needed to heat it, and afterwards the remaining "spent" barley and hops are collected and composted. The menu features a mix of essential food classics and contemporary staples, and is a perfect complement to their many delicious beers. The restaurant features exposed wood rafters and string lights that add a patio feel to the interior (there is also an actual patio during the summer that seats 30). Although open until 1 a.m. (often showing the latest game on the big screens), the restaurant is kidfriendly until 10. Growlers are available for fans that want to take some of the good stuff home. jasperbrewingco.ca | 780-852-4111

FOOD AT THE FAIRMONT Authentic, wild, and above all, delicious. The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge boasts a number of quality onsite eateries, but the Moose’s Nook Chophouse is a cozy gem known for its approachable sophistication and fresh ingredients.

Maybe it’s the dry-aged AAA Alberta steak. Maybe it’s the giant stone fireplace emanating heat from where once was a landscaped duck pond. Maybe it’s the real-wood furniture and art-laden walls. Maybe it’s the name itself — affectionately abbreviated by locals to simply The Nook — that best evokes the restaurant’s special blend of rustic elegance. From the moment you walk through the doors, the atmospheric lighting and friendly, knowledgeable staff creates a warm, comfortable, mountain lodge– inspired ambiance that brings people together. With an emphasis on top tier game meats, modern appetizers and exquisite desserts, diners savor true Rocky Mountain cuisine made with local and organic ingredients. For executive sous chef Cliff Crawford, a fast talking east coaster raised by professional cooks, game meats always represented a special occasion

growing up because it meant someone had spent time on the land to get it. There’s an inherent realness to the wild boar, elk, bison, venison, and soon moose too, that appears on the menu at The Nook (the homegrown authenticity doesn’t stop there; the popular pumpkin cheesecake is actually Crawford's mother’s recipe). The meat is among the best in the world, but it's made even better by dry aging, an exclusive and meticulous process that brings superior flavour and tenderness to the cuts. It’s complemented nicely by an extensive, Canadian-focused wine list (though there's plenty of international offerings as well). Of course, no memorable experience would be complete without some music; a celebrated jazz pianist plays in the restaurant six nights a week in the summer and two nights a week in the winter. fairmont.com/jasper/dining | 780-852-3301

FILL UP ON GAS & CHECK ROAD CONDITIONS

2

WATCH FOR WILDLIFE

Weather on the Icefields Parkway can be quite different than surrounding areas, so don’t trust the view from your bedroom window — check conditions through Alberta’s Official Road Reports (search 511.alberta.ca, or dial 511 on your phone). While you’re at it, get gas in Jasper, Banff or Lake Louise; there’s no gas stations between them that operate in winter.

Staying on the lookout for wildlife is important year-round in Jasper, but when the temperature dips there’s a 20 km stretch of road that runs through the heart of a winter caribou habitat. As one of Canada’s species at risk, the Jasper herd of woodland caribou represents a last stand for this majestic animal in the mountain parks. Maintain the speed limit, mind your surroundings, and help keep wildlife wild by not feeding or approaching them.

Photo David Guenther

The Icefields Parkway, also known as Highway 93, is famous for its scenic mountain views. But visitors who only journey the route in summer miss out on the sparkling winter beauty that defines the true Canadian Rockies. That said, to witness epic glaciers, frozen waterfalls and icecovered lakes, some important precautions must be taken.

BRING SUPPLIES

The Parkway drive is part of a mountain adventure, and every mountain adventure necessitates being prepared for setbacks. Cars can break down and cell phone reception isn’t reliable along parts of the highway. Always be sure to bring along an emergency kit that includes (but is not limited to): 1) extra warm clothing 2) extra food and water. It’s always comforting to know you have an extra granola bar in case hunger strikes!

Families will appreciate the childfriendly custom suite amenities such as separate rooms with bunk beds, gaming consoles, highchairs and jogging strollers while cyclists will find a convenient bike tuning station. Motorcycle enthusiasts even have a specialized washing station where they can restore the gleam to their adventure-dusted machine. The two year-round outdoor hot tubs, however, surely transcend all demographics. Other conveniences include ski storage and shuttle to Marmot Basin, laundry, free wifi, and unexpected bonus amenities like a microwave and mini-fridge in all rooms and suites. Located on the southern side of town, it’s a short and scenic stroll to return home after dinner downtown. mountrobsoninn.com 780-852-3327

KNOW WHERE TO STAY

Did you know that there are six hostels and four campgrounds you can stay at along the Icefields Parkway in the winter? Wapiti Campground and Whirlpool Campground offer front country camping during the winter, while Big Bend and Wilcox Winter Campgrounds offer backcountry camping. To reserve at Wilcox call 780-8526177. For all others, visit: reservation.pc.gc.ca. For hostel information and reservations call 866-762-4122 or visit www.hihostels.ca.

THINGS T O DO

DARK SKY PRESERVE In 2011, Jasper was designated as a Dark Sky Preserve by the Royal Astronomical Society in Canada, due to its limited light pollution and ideal conditions for dark sky viewing.

WHAT IS A DARK SKY PRESERVE? A Dark Sky Preserve is an area in which no artificial lighting is visible, and active measures are in place to educate and promote the reduction of light pollution to the public and nearby municipalities. Jasper National Park has made a special commitment to protect and preserve the night sky.

WHAT MAKES JASPER DIFFERENT? Jasper National Park is the second largest Dark Sky Preserve in the world, and the largest accessible Dark Sky Preserve - meaning there’s a town within the limits of the preserve.

DARK SKY FESTIVAL OCT. 12 – 21, 2018

This ever-growing annual celebration invites stargazing adventurers of all ages to get lost in the wonder of the universe and beyond. Jasper.travel/darksky

HOW TO EXPERIENCE Although anyone can walk outside after dark and look up, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the cosmos above with the Planetarium and Telescope Experience Combo. Offered exclusively in the winter, this extraordinary package includes: a Planetarium dome experience which provides a guided simulation of the night sky, astrophotography tips, a tour of the largest telescope in the Rockies, and instant-replay of recent celestial views from a video telescope (or if weather permits, live views). Polish off the evening on the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge’s Beauvert Plateau in an authentic First Nations tipi with s'mores and hot chocolate. Note: This experience operates rain, shine, and even when snowing.
