EXPLORERS OF ALL LEVELS WILL BE THE ONES GETTING A BIRTHDAY GIFT WITH FREE ENTRY INTO JASPER NATIONAL PARK FOR 2017! Jasper is Canada’s base of adventure, and as the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, there are few places better to celebrate our country’s 150 th birthday! With so many new and returning explorers anticipated to be making their way to Jasper this year, there are a few things you should keep in mind when planning your next trip.

PRE-TRAVEL PREPARATION Preparation is key to a stress-free vacation! Once you’ve picked Jasper as your vacation destination, be sure to book your hotel or campground well in advance. Jasper is, understandably, a popular place to visit, meaning campgrounds and hotels book up particularly fast. If you already know which activities you want to experience while in Jasper, purchase your tickets in advance! Plenty of Jasper’s attractions have online reservation systems and easy to navigate online ticket purchasing. If you’d like to experience places such as Pyramid Island, Athabasca Falls, or Edith Cavell at your own pace and without the swell of other visitors, consider planning your visits during meal times. While the

2

crowds are off having lunch or dinner, you’ll be enjoying some quieter quality time with Mother Nature.

TRAVEL DAY Whether you decide to drive, take the train or take a shuttle, be sure to give yourself plenty of extra time to get to Jasper. With increased vehicle traffic expected, it’s incredibly important to be cautious on the roads. Staying mindful and aware allows everyone the opportunity to appreciate and acknowledge the natural beauty and incredible wildlife that surrounds Jasper!

WHEN YOU ARRIVE Stop by the Visitor Information Centre at 500 Connaught Dr. to pick up some maps, use their iPad’s and get any questions that you have answered. If you have a smart phone handy, use it! There are plenty of travel apps and maps that will surely come in handy while in Jasper. Please note that you may not be able to get service in all of the park areas, so take some time to save any important information offline so that you can access it anywhere. Once you have everything organized, you’ll be equipped for an epic adventure to celebrate Canada’s 150 th! FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT: www.jasper.travel/canada-150

You can’t miss the historic log and stone house in the centre of a park-like lawn right in the heart of town. What was once home to Jasper’s very first superintendent is now known as the Visitor Information Centre (VIC): where Jasper adventures get started. Along with all things Parks Canada – including park and backcountry camping passes, campground updates, wildlife information and more – explorers can connect with Tourism Jasper’s travel counsellors. Friendly and knowledgeable, this team receives award-winning training to make sure that they’re as prepared as possible to help visiting explorers make the most of their time in Jasper. Fawn Furlotte, VIC coordinator and bornand-raised Jasper local, is passionate about sharing her love of her hometown with visitors. “Jasper National Park is a hidden gem,” says Fawn, “There is so much to discover here that no matter how long you’ve lived here, or how many times you visit, you will always find more to explore.” For the second year, the VIC will be equipped with mobile travel counsellors for visitors

looking for information on the go. The Mobile Travel Tricycle will be available at strategic sidewalk locations every day between 9:30 AM and 5:30 PM during the peak months of June to August. Here, visitors will find a member from the travel counsellor team ready to provide helpful information on Jasper’s best activities, attractions, restaurants, and accommodations. “The idea of this project is to go beyond traditional services already offered to visitors by providing instant on the spot information, with a local touch,” says Lety Cortez, business development specialist at Tourism Jasper. While explorers will still need to visit the Visitor Information Centre in order to complete any reservations and bookings, the mobile travel counsellors will be able to engage more with visitors on the ground in a timely manner. Whether it’s at the Visitor Information Centre or out in the streets of Jasper, the travel counsellors are there to help get your adventures started!

P HO T O RUL E S 1 0 1 THERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHILE YOU’RE OUT CAPTURING NATURE’S MOST EPHEMERAL MOMENTS IN THE HEART OF THE CANADIAN ROCKIES. OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHER JEFF LEWIS GAVE US SOME POINTERS ON WHAT TO DO (AND WHAT NOT TO DO!) WHEN PHOTOGRAPHING JASPER NATIONAL PARK. DO… be prepared for any weather at any time of year. Although uncommon, there's been rain in December and snow in August. Always have a few layers of clothing and something to keep you warm and dry. Also be sure to carry bear spray and a headlamp for extra precaution on hikes in and out of your location. DO… let someone know where you’re going, especially if you’re going alone. DO… make sure you plan ahead and get to your location with plenty of time to set up your shot. There is nothing worse than showing up at the last minute and trying to set up your gear and compose a good photo when the light is already at its best.

D O N O T… m a k e p h o t o s o f u n l a w f u l activities. Your Instagram fame is not more important than the rules of our parks. DO NOT… approach wildlife. They can be very unpredictable and with continued close contact with humans, we are endangering their lives. There are places in town that rent great gear so you can get amazing photos of wildlife from a safe distance. DO NOT… make new trails or rearrange natural elements to create your ideal photograph. Nature is beautiful the way it is, it’s our job to document, not to alter. Last but definitely not least… take a moment and step away from your camera, take a deep breath of fresh mountain air and appreciate your surroundings. It’s just as important to be present in the moment, as it is to capture it!

Another major hub for art in Jasper is the Jasper Library and Cultural Centre, which houses the Jasper Artists Guild (JAG) and the Habitat for the Arts. JAG was founded in 2001, when a small group of local artists agreed that Jasper needed an organization to promote visual fine arts. Since its inception, the Guild has grown steadily and uses artists’ commissions to promote the arts through one-man exhibits, musical entertainment and instructional workshops. Jasper’s Habitat for the Arts is an organization that highlights Jasper’s diverse multicultural landscape by engaging community members in a variety of unique events, including monthly theme nights and educational programs.
