REBUILDING TOURISM AFTER TERRORISM

T

he words Terrorism and Tourism rhymes, so is the impact of each on the other. The impact of terrorism on the tourism sector is a major concern all over the world. Even as governments try to regain confidence and rebuild peace and natural environment in the affected destination, tourists seem to be more wary in choosing those destinations. Interestingly, the trend is not noticeable when it comes to going to places which were affected by natural disasters. While the direct costs of terrorist attacks are huge loss of life, destruction of property and bulk cancellations in hotel and flight bookings, the indirect costs include fall in trade, unemployment, decrease in tourist footfalls and an overall reduction in tourism activities. Research shows that it takes approximately 13 months for a tourist destination to recover from a terrorist attack. The other side of the coin is the fact that travellers don’t stop travelling but chose more secure destinations leading to revenue loss in the affected destination. Travellers rate security as the most important variable while choosing their holiday destination. The increase in foot falls in beach resorts located in Spain, Portugal and Greece and a decrease of visitors to Tunisia and Egypt following several terrorist attacks are fine examples of such instances. This shift in demand also has an impact on tourism companies and all other allied services related to the tourism industry. The attack on Easter this year was the deadliest in Sri Lanka since the end of the decades-long

civil war that crippled the country’s economy. The attack brings into focus various measures that the Sri Lankan Tourism Board needs to take in order to ensure the safety of tourists during terror attacks. It outlines strategic plans to rebuild tourism stakeholder confidence to ensure the recovery of the tourism industry that supports one in 10 families in Sri Lanka. Soon after the tragic incident, with an objective to outline strategic frame work, several high-level cross industry working sessions, which includes both public and private sector stakeholders, have been conducted. The Sri Lankan Tourism Industry got underway with an action plan to minimise the financial impact of cancellations and to maintain and rebuild the country brand and manage the long term impact of the attack. The outpouring of love, support and solidarity from around the globe made Sri Lanka resilient to restore the world’s faith in this beautiful island’s hospitality. Even though the term crisis is very large and complex and can’t be defined globally, governments should establish crisis recovery strategies that would quickly help recover tourist destinations from a crisis situation as in the case of natural disasters. Managing media and adverse tourists’ reactions to the disaster will help in stemming the drop in footfalls to the destination. Tourism India extends all support to Sri Lankan Tourism and our Industry partners on its path to a quick recovery.

BIS FOR QUALITY SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT IN ADVENTURE TOURISM BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS WILL ASSOCIATE WITH ATOAI, TOURISM INDIA & KITTS FOR STANDARDISATION

B

ureau of Indian Standards (BIS) the National Standards Body of India engaged in Standardization activity in various fields’ will joints hands with Adventure Tour Operators Association of India, Kerala Institute of Travel & Tourism Management (KITTS) Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (KATPS) and Tourism India in the field Adventure Tourism safety and security guidelines. As a part of this, a statelevel Workshop for the Adventure Tourism Stakeholders was organized by KAPTS and Tourism India at UdayacSamudra Leisure Beach Hotel Kovalam in May 2019. BIS has decided to launch a new certification scheme on Adventure Tourism - Safety

management Systems against the above standard and Kerala will be the first state in India to implement this certification. This will help the Kerala Tourism industry in demonstrating compliance to standards thus increasing consumer confidence and safety of visiting tourists. It is perceived that BIS certification would also ensure compliance with Government regulations/guidelines. All adventure activities involve inherent risk of harm and providers have to manage those risks. The degree of risk varies among activities and locations. It is important that adventure activity providers take necessary steps to manage the risks and deliver adventure activities safely while keeping alive the sense

of adventure and excitement. The consequences of not doing so can be catastrophic. To promote a more systematic approach to managing safety in adventure tourism, BIS has published IS 16311/ISO 21101:2014 Adventure tourism — Safety management systems-Requirements. The Standard sets out the requirements for a safety management system (SMS) that can be used by all types and sizes of providers, operating in different geographic, cultural and social environments Kerala Tourism has already conducted a state level industry brainstorming workshop to implement safety and security measures in the Adventure and Activity segments in the state and the draft guideline is already

Many

of these adventure activities including Mountain Bike Challenges, Bamboo rafting and trekking are offered to international and domestic visitors by professionally managed adventure tour operators of Kerala. INDIAN TOURISM TO REACH

35 TRILLION BY 2029 TOURISM SECTOR TO CREATE 53 MILLION DIRECT AND INDIRECT EMPLOYMENT BY 2029

F

ICCI-Yes Bank Report titled ‘India Inbound Tourism: Unlocking the Opportunities’ highlights India as tourism powerhouse. As per the report the tourism sector has generated USD 247.3 billion (INR 16.91 trillion) in 2018, with a growth of 6.7% and accounting for 9.2% of the total economy. India as the 8th largest country in terms of contribution to travel and tourism GDP and the largest market in South Asia, Indian tourism sector is likely to grow at 6.7% per annum to reach INR 35 trillion with 9.6% of GD by 2029. The report further highlights that the tourism sector generated 26.7 million jobs in 2018. By 2029, the sector is expected to provide employment to nearly 53 million people, directly and indirectly. Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) crossed 10 million in 2017 and the growth trend is expected to continue. Consumption by domestic tourists remains the key strength of the sector in India, much stronger than the global average. Growing disposable income, increase in new millennial tourists, new travel destinations as well as new themes of tourism will further propel the growth. The systematic growth, maintenance and sustainable development of tourism destinations as well as focus on promoting the emerging avenues of tourism will be essential towards unlocking its true potential. The growth in Indian travel and tourism sector has largely been driven by 16

domestic tourists. Foreign tourists still account for a limited share as compared to some of the top-ranking countries. The government intends to achieve the ambitious target of 1% foreign tourist arrivals in world’s international tourist arrivals by 2020 and increase it to 2% by 2025. Traditional and emerging themes of tourism, including Nature, Heritage & Cultural, Religious, Adventure, Medical & Wellness, MICE and Wedding, among others have been a key attraction for domestic and foreign tourists. Strong domestic demand and economic growth, price competitive offerings, infrastructure development, and emergence of new destinations and niche tourism products will continue to drive the growth of the industry in future. The Government has also undertaken several initiatives such as rapid implementation of Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD schemes, E-Visa for citizens from 166 countries, Adventure Tourism Guidelines, among others. Furthermore, promotional activities such as Incredible India 2.0 campaign and India Tourism Mart 2018 have also immensely benefited the sector. Going forward, there is a greater need for the Government and private sector to collaborate towards thematic development of the destinations, skilling of local communities and the conceptualization and implementation of developmental initiatives for the sector.

AMADEUS SET TO TRANSFORM THE AIRPORT PASSENGER EXPERIENCE AMADEUS HAS ACQUIRED ICM AIRPORT TECHNICS TO STRENGTHEN ITS PASSENGER AUTOMATION AND SELF-SERVICE BAG DROP SOLUTIONS FOR AIRPORTS AND AIRLINES

A

madeus has agreed to acquire ICM Airport Technics, a global leader in passenger automation and self-service bag drop solutions for airports and airlines, for an undisclosed sum. ICM, which is headquartered in Sydney, Australia, specialises in the provision of passenger automation and self-service bag drop solutions for customers principally in APAC and Europe. Since 2009, ICM has processed more than 75 million bags worldwide and is a global leader in providing airports with either retrofitted or replacement type Auto Bag Drop (ABD) units. ICM serves around 25 airports including some of the most 26

important airports in the world. The company is also an early pioneer in biometrics for baggage processing. Following this deal, Amadeus is now in a stronger position in this sector to drive future growth. Smart airports continue to invest in improving capacity and efficiency whilst increasingly wanting only to work with strategic providers that can offer all of the components they need in one place. To this end Amadeus’ airport customers will now be able to enhance and improve their existing services to passengers whilst continuing to ensure passenger safety and security. Bruno Spada, Head of Airport IT at Amadeus says: “Often the passenger experience in airports is not a good one: long queues to check bags in and disparate services and technologies that do not always speak to each other. In essence, airports are crying out for open self-service solutions to help take the friction and hassle out of the airport experience for passengers. By combining Amadeus’ and ICM’s software and hardware capabilities, by accelerating and introducing more self-service options, and by using the power of biometrics, this deal announced today will ensure that together we can deliver better journeys for passengers in the future”. Spada continues: ‘ICM is a fantastic company and will be a perfect cultural fit for Amadeus. We will bring ICM’s technical know-how and strong

COMBINED AMADEUS AND ICM OFFERING WILL SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE THE AIRPORT EXPERIENCE IN THE FACE OF RISING PASSENGER VOLUMES, INCREASING RESTRICTIONS ON SPACE AND CAPACITY, AND GROWING CONSUMER DEMANDS AROUND TECHNOLOGY customer focus to our expertise and product offering for airports. Importantly, customers continually tell us they need a strategic end-toend solution in order to answer the evolving operational needs of the airport – they don’t want to have to work with multiple suppliers but rather single providers that can harness the best of the very latest technologies and who ultimately can ‘do it all’: this deal delivers just that. I believe this deal will also accelerate our future innovation capabilities. Combining ICM and Amadeus’ advanced technology expertise will provide an open platform for airport innovation and will act as a trampoline for growth for Amadeus and ICM in the coming years ahead”. Richard

Dinkelmann, CEO of ICM says: “By combining ICM’s market-leading self-service and passenger processing solutions with Amadeus’ global reach and complementary product offering, we are now in a unique position to offer even better technical solutions to our airline and airport customers. We are excited about the future, as we share similar values such as strong innovation, reliability, and an uncompromising commitment to improving airport efficiency as well as passenger safety and security.” Luis Maroto, President & CEO of Amadeus, says: “The acquisition of ICM is another important milestone for our Airport IT business, as well as for our diversification strategy. It will further increase our presence in a key

growth area for us, whilst bringing on board a new team, as well as a suite of products that reflect our drive for innovation. With this acquisition, we aim to simplify a range of complex processes for our airport customers.” As part of the acquisition, approximately 150 ICM employees are expected to join Amadeus. ICM will become part of Amadeus’ Airport IT division, forming part of its Strategic Growth Businesses customer unit. ICM will retain a local presence close to its customers via offices in both Sydney and Melbourne. Deal will mean Amadeus is able to design, configure, implement, operate and support all airport systems needed to manage passengers and their baggage from end-to-end.

experiences and invites viewers to live a fantasy of their own: Klook releases three new Game of Thrones themed experiences in Dubrovnik in 2019 in time for the final season to hit screens in the region on the 14th April. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s easy to see why the show’s creators gravitated towards Dubrovnik’s Old Town as its setting for King’s landing. With the upcoming season boasting a record-breaking USD$15 million budget per episode, the highly anticipated settings are expected to be more breathtaking than

ever. The culturally-rich medieval town hosts the show’s main plotline, the glory of the Iron Throne, and invites fans to relive some of the series most crucial moments, including Queen Cersei’s walk of atonement. The new Game of Thrones Filming Locations Tour takes fans through the halls of the Lovrijenac Fortress, the Trsteno Arboretum and the Lokrum Island, while the new Cruise and Walking Tour allows travelers to embark on Daenerys Targaryen’s ship upon the Adriatic Sea with a Dragon Blood cocktail in hand. Last of the new tours, thrill-seekers can explore Dubrovnik’s less-frequented alleyways on the Legends Evening Walking Tour, led by an engaging tour guide with a wealth of local insights and secrets about the show Alternatively, a trip to Northern Ireland offers guests a unique opportunity to see that Grjótagjá Rift - the Lake Mývatn Hike and Bath Tour includes a visit to where Jon Snow took a faithful leap to break his celibacy on a romantic rendezvous with Ygritte. The allure of Northern Ireland’s rich landscapes and the natural geothermal pools provide an insightful and relaxing experience. Another popular movie series drawing hordes of fans to filming locations is the pop culture legend of Harry Potter. With The Harry Potter Walking Tour in London, Potter heads can step into iconic places such as Diagon Alley, Platform 9¾, and the Leaky Cauldron. Alternatively, the Warner Bros Studio Tour London - the Making of Harry Potter invites Harry Potter maniacs to feed their curiosities on a full day adventure and an in-depth look into the costumes and behind the ‘scenes of the movies’ production. Fandom travel is a trend globally. The popularity in Korean dramas has seen a positive pick up on locations featured in, including Minsok Korean Folk Village, Gwangmyeong Cave, and

LISBON

A MUST VISIT IN 2019 A WIDE VARIETY OF LAND SCAPES AND HERITAGE IS ALWAYS CLOSE BY

L

isbon is Portugal’s capital and the hub of a multifaceted area that appeals to different tastes and senses. Lisbon’s temperate climate, sunny weather, green space, lifestyle pace, history, culture, architecture, culinary reputation, as well as its comparably low cost of living and its status as a relatively uncrowded tourist destination, were some of the factors that went into Lisbon receiving this accolade. In a city that has been influenced by many different far-off cultures over time, there is still a village feel in

each historic neighbourhood. Stroll through the Pombaline grid of streets in the Baixa district that opens on to the Tagus in Praça do Comércio, and then follow the river to discover some of the city’s most beautiful parts: the monumental area of Belém with its World Heritage monuments, the mediaeval quarters and the latest contemporary leisure spaces, such as the Parque das Nações. If you continue to the mouth of the river, you’ll understand why we say that Lisbon is the centre of a vast resort. Along the coastal road you’ll find beaches and beach resorts that combine villas and hotels from the beginning of the 20th century with marinas, terraces and excellent golf

courses. Further along the coast you’ll come across world-renowned surfing beaches, but also the palaces scattered across the cultural landscape of Sintra, a World Heritage Site. The wide variety of landscapes and heritage is always close by, whether to the north or south of the capital. With beaches, natural parks, cultural routes and accommodation for all tastes, it is hard to escape the Lisbon region on a visit to Portugal. Portugal was founded in 1143, making it one of the oldest nations in Europe. Portugal is named after its 2nd largest city, Porto. There are 22 UNESCO World Heritage classifications in Portugal; and each year more than 20 million tourists visit the country. With the longest bridge in Europe, Portugal is also a very popular destination from India for those looking for a Euro break and an extension to their Spain and Morocco itineraries. The total flight duration from Portugal to India is 10 hours, 42 minutes and India is 5:30 hours ahead of Portugal. 48
