Adopt systems thinking approach

T

he TRAVEL & TOURISM sector has a significant role in the contribution for local Economies and in many countries; its contribution to gross domestic product is undeniable. And tourism is championed as a “key driver for socio-economic progress” Against global growth figures for the sector, there are, however, concerns about the negative impacts of the sector on both local communities and the planet is another side of the coin. Sustainability leadership is a key business attribute and therefore sustainability is a strategic driver for Travel & Tourism. The sector contributed over US$8.9 trillion to the global economy in 2019, supporting one in 10 jobs (334 million) worldwide and one in four new jobs over the last five years, with 3.5% growth in 2019 compared to the global economy at 2.5%. As per the WTTC report In 2015 the next 20 years “will be characterised by the sector fully integrating climate change and related issues into business strategy, supporting the global transition to a low carbon economy, and strengthening resilience against climate risks. WTTC went on to make public commitments with its members towards carbon reduction and agreed on a common agenda for climate action in Travel & Tourism in accord with the United Nations. Framework Convention on Climate Change. The United Nations 193-member countries adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) In 2015 that marked the first time the global community

www.tourismindia.org

agreed on an actionable agenda with priorities, goals, and targets that include most countries and their citizens. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides a guide for global action on people, the planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership. The -universal signing among country leaders of the SDGs and the Paris COP Climate Change agreements in 2015 was significant in moving the issues of sustainability further up international, business, and public agendas. As a sector, Travel & Tourism contributes to the fulfilment of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Specifically, The explicit recognition of Travel & Tourism’s important contribution to sustainable development is important for business leaders and policymakers alike. It fully accounts for the sector’s contribution to the national Agenda 2030 . To address the challenge of sustainable Travel & Tourism, a radical reorganisation of technological, economic, and social systems and shift of incentives 7 towards protection and restoration of natural systems is the main requirement. Through systems thinking approach, the Travel & Tourism sector can master sustainability solutions for people, places, and the planet, as well as profit. Driving resilience and agility, the sector can play a global role in support of public health and sustainable development. Rajani A Editor

PATA PARTNERS WITH TOURLINK The Pacific Asia Travel Association has partnered with a European Union funded TourLink project that recently kicked-off, under the EU SWITCH-ASIA program.

T

he Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has partnered with a European Union (EU)-funded TourLink project that recently kicked-off, under the EU SWITCH-ASIA program. TourLink is a Thai tourism supply chain initiative, linking EU buyers with Thai tour operators and suppliers, aiming to increase competitive advantage by raising sustainability performance. Faced with the realities of climate change, systematic sustainability management will be a required mark of quality, safety, and professionalism, and a key to doing business with EU outbound tour operators. In the post-COVID-19 tourism landscape, tourism professionals with the skills to deliver positive results for profit, the planet, and people will be more employable. TourLink unites the experience, expertise, and energy of Thai-EU sustainable tourism pioneers: the European Centre for Ecological and Agricultural Tourism (ECEAT), Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA), Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), Thai Eco and Adventure Travel Association (TEATA), and Thai Hotel Association (THA). The partners will work until April 2024 to raise sustainability performance along Thai tourism supply chains and boost market demand for sustainable product choices. 14

OCTOBER 2021 TOURISM INDIA

Partners will build the capacity of Thai tour operators and suppliers, such as hotels, transport, and activity providers, to achieve common standards for quality, safety, and sustainability. The outcome will lead to internationally recognised Travelife certification for the suppliers and market benefits for their businesses, as well as showcase Thailand as a leading sustainable tourism destination. TourLink will also improve Thai tourism businesses’ access to Green Finance initiatives and contribute to key challenges of plastic reduction and food waste, and decreasing carbon emissions. According to TourLink Project Manager, Mr. Peter Richards, “Raising your sustainability performance during this time will help you save money through simple, cost-saving measures; show European B2B business partners that you are professional and reliable, and motivate your staff during the difficult COVID period. Travelife’s sustainability management system can directly link your company to leading EU Tourism Associations and showcase your achievements. Tour operators which engage now can benefit from free membership for 2021-22, use Travelife’s online platform, criteria, training tools, and tips; and receive personal coaching to help you to meet the standards.”

PATA CEO Liz Ortiguera echoes this sentiment, adding, “PATA is focussed on supporting the industry recovery with tangible in-market projects that can demonstrate practical, responsible solutions. Our goal is to develop and/or share business models that combine sustainability with profitability. Creating strong sustainability development plans will bring competitive advantage and generate longterm success for your business.” The TourLink team is reaching out to collaborate with other public and private sector organisations. One exciting opportunity is a collaboration with the highly innovative Thailand Carbon Balance project, managed by TEATA, DASTA, TGO, TCEB, and the Thai Chamber of Commerce. This cooperation can enable an end-toend EU-Thai tourism supply chain approach towards carbon calculation, management, and offsetting (carbon credits). PATA is also building on their pioneering BUFFET Toolkit, which provides step by step guidelines for reducing food waste, and Plastic Free Toolkit for Tour Operators to develop new standards, tools, and innovative training which will help Thai tourism professionals to harness sustainability as an opportunity for well-paid work during COVID-19 recovery.

TOURISM BUSINESS AND POLICY UNCERTAINTY MUST BE ADDRESSED:FAITH FAITH has requested to remove the arbitrary cap of INR 5 crores on SEIS entitlements for the tourism, travel & hospitality industry for Financial Year 2019-2020

F

AITH the policy federation of all the national associations representing the complete tourism, travel, and hospitality industry of India (ADTOI, ATOAI, FHRAI, HAI, IATO, ICPB, IHHA, ITTA, TAAI, TAFI) has flagged critical concerns in the just-released SEIS notification FAITH has made reference to the SEIS entitlement through duty credit slips of notification no: 29/ 2015-20, dated 23rd September 2021, which will bring some relief to cash-starved tourism enterprises after almost 18 months of a severe pandemic. FAITH has raised two requests for urgent amendments in the notification. FAITH has said that the decrease in rates of duty credit which have been brought down from 7% and 5% to 5% and 3% respectively to travel agencies tour operators services ( CPC – 7471) hotel & restaurants (CPC – 641643) respectively is going to be a massive hit on the cash flows of tour operators & hotels who

www.tourismindia.org

made continued critical financial commitments in international markets in FY 2019 -20 to enable the increase of international travellers to India beyond 17 million which led to India’s global market share of international arrivals beyond 1%. FAITH has requested that Sector – Tourism & Travel Related Services be exempted from this notified rate decrease as Tourism, Travel & Hospitality Related Services has been the worst affected industry from the pandemic. This has been highlighted in the Kamath RBI report and has been acknowledged multiple times 15 across all representations of the Central & State Governments. FAITH has also requested to remove the arbitrary cap of ₹ 5 crores on SEIS entitlements for the tourism, travel & hospitality industry for FY 19-20. Since the Indian tourism travel and hospitality industry is a mix of large, medium, small & micro tourism travel & hospitality Industry. Each of these players has

risen above & beyond their sizes to contribute to the growth of Indian Tourism, valuable foreign exchange & thus crucial jobs. Setting such a cap will be a major disincentive to large & medium players in their efforts to take tourism enterprises ‘Made in India’ global. FAITH has requested to remove this arbitrary cap of ₹ 5 crores on SEIS entitlements for the tourism, travel & hospitality industry. FAITH opined that addressing these concerns will bring ease of doing business and remove any policy uncertainty in the Indian Tourism Travel & Hospitality industry.

GLOBAL COLLABORATION AND TECH INVENTIONS

TO CREATE A BETTER FUTURE 88 % Indian Travelleers believe global collaboration is needed to tackle global challenges and 72 % believe India will develop infrastructure to support green travel

T

he global survey conducted by Expo 2020 Dubai revealed that Indians believe global collaboration is needed to tackle global challenges The 2021 survey of more than 22,000 people across 24 countries tracked sentiment in a world irrevocably changed by COVID-19. Conducted in partnership with YouGov, it followed a similar study carried out in 2019, before the pandemic. According to this survey, 88 percent of Indian respondents are of the opinion that nations should work closer together to solve global challenges such as 28

a pandemic. In line with the key finding, the theme of collaboration can be found across several of the study’s responses with 56 percent of Indians saying that greater alliances between communities have a part to play in building a better future. Meanwhile, 57 percent also expressed that they believe technological inventions will facilitate unity. The highlighted confidence in new technology resonates with India’s Pavilion theme at Expo 2020. The theme being ‘India on the move’ represents the nation’s progressive philosophy and de-

termination to be recognized as ‘Modern India’ via technological advancement and innovation. Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director-General of Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “Expo 2020 has developed this latest global study to help us understand how the citizens of the world believe we can shape a better future. Overall, the findings are encouraging, and show a collective desire to work together, broaden our horizons, and exchange ideas. “In less than two months, when

Expo 2020 opens its doors, we look forward to welcoming millions of visitors from across the globe, and harnessing the kind of diversity this study reflects, as we join together to build a new world, with a brighter future for both people and the planet.” The survey outcome shows that Indians have a positive outlook on technology and sustainability and reveals that nearly 75 percent of young Indians are hopeful about their future and exploring opportunities — versus the global youth response of around 50 percent.

Survey polls 22,000 people across 24 markets as Expo prepares to open in October

Strongly inclined towards sustainability, the survey also showed that seven in ten trusts that India will develop an infrastructure that supports green travel, such as charging stations and electric vehicles (EVs) in the

next decade. Supporting this finding, 34 percent of Indian respondents believe that eco-friendly local transportation such as electric cars, bikes, scooters, etc. should be made accessible to all citizens of the planet (again selected as a priority out of 11 options). The survey delves into a range of subjects, also including health and wellness, sustainable travel, efficient food supply chains, and the development of both urban and rural communities, all of which will be the focuses of Expo 2020’s programming. Under the mega-events Programme for People and Planet, Expo 2020’s participating countries, organisations, partners, and visitors will collaborate to discuss future-proofing solutions to the world’s biggest challenges. One of the first global mega-events to take place since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Expo 2020 will run from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022, inviting visitors from around the world to join the making of a new world, experiencing a sixmonth celebration of human creativity, innovation, progress, and culture With the purpose of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future, Expo 2020 will be the world’s most impactful global incubator for new ideas, catalysing an exchange of new perspectives and inspiring action to deliver real-life solutions to real-world challenges

Airline CEOs, government ministers, and association leaders will outline actions that the industry must take to accelerate the recovery during a series of conference sessions at the event. High-profile speakers include Jozsef Varadi, Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air; Jason McGuinness, director of the commercial of Ryanair; Garth Lund, CCO of Flair; Brad Dean, CEO of Discov-

er Puerto Rico; Vijay Daryanani, Minister for Business, Tourism, Transport, and the Port of the Government of Gibraltar; Luis Felipe de Oliveira, Director General of ACI World and Fabio Lazzerini, CEO of ITA. Hosted by SEA Milan Airports, in partnership with the Lombardy Region, the Municipality of Milan, ENIT – Italian Tourist Board, and Bergamo Airport, World Routes will deliver long-term growth opportunities for the city and wider region. Air transport’s contribution to the Italian economy is significant, supporting 714,000 jobs and contributing €46 billion to the economy – accounting

for roughly 2.7% of Italy’s GDP in 2019. Following the impact of COVID-19, the positive catalytic effects of air connectivity in increasing trade, tourism, investment, labour supply, and market efficiency will be more important than ever in helping Italy to rebuild its economy. Steven Small, director of Routes, said: “Our role has, and will always be, to bring together the world’s airlines, airports, tourism authorities, and route development stakeholders to build air services for the economic and social good of every destination.” “By delivering a platform where these stakeholders can meet, World Routes will define the recovery of an industry profoundly impacted by Covid-19. The route development industry is about building relationships that create

effective partnerships and successful networks. And, it is those partnerships that this event will support. The innovation, resilience, and cooperation demonstrated by the route development community throughout this unprecedented period will continue to be paramount in its road to recovery. By working together, we can accelerate the recovery and build back better.” Armando Brunini, CEO of SEA Milan Airports, said: “World Routes is an important appointment for our Industry, we can’t wait to meet in person once again with delegates from all over the world to share views on the future of the aviation industry and, of course, do business! In the next years, airlines need to select a network where there is a critical mass of passengers, which is important. And Milan offers this

critical mass. Our goal is the recovery of connectivity and traffic volumes. We need to work hard with all stakeholders involved to create the right preconditions for a proper restart especially of longhaul traffic with our priorities being America and Asia and first results already arriving. The city of Milan is bouncing back to its usual vibrant and dynamic mood, so we believe to be well placed to be at the forefront of recovery. Milan and Lombardy are the venues of major international events, one of Europe’s recognized centers for finance and business, and an extremely enjoyable city. The region surrounding Milan was the first in the western world to be hit by this devastating pandemic and we are glad that the first post-Covid World routes event happens here to symbolically support the relaunch of aviation.”

As traveler needs evolve, digital touchpoints become ubiquitous and personalization more pervasive. Adopting new technology is even more essential and for the airline, this means working to become the leading digitalized airline in the region. “Bamboo Airways has leveraged technology to elevate customer experience and optimize the airline’s resources. Bamboo

Airways will continue to upgrade and innovate, following our motto ‘Put customers at the center of business, to accelerate the process and become an international 5-star airline” says Hoang Ngoc Thach, Deputy Chief Commercial Officer of Bamboo Airways. Since it started operating in January 2019, Bamboo Airways has embraced IBS Software’s iFly Res, an Omni-channel Software

as a Service (SaaS) commerce platform, to underpin its PSS. Bamboo Airways has deployed iFly Res, one of the first New Distribution Capability (NDC) compliant PSS systems in the world, to power functions including passenger reservations, schedules and flight control, inventory control, fares, and ticketing, and departure control. Building on a successful partnership, Bamboo Airways has also chosen IBS Software’s iFly Loyalty platform to power its rapidly growing Bamboo Club and achieve its goal of delivering a strong loyalty business proposition. Bamboo Club offers four rewarding membership tiers – Emerald, Gold, Diamond, and First – providing exclusive privileges such as accumulate and redeem points on all services offered by Bamboo Airways, and selected services offered by Bamboo Club’s partners, priority arrangements in case of flight irregu-

larities, priority seat selection and complimentary upgrades to Bamboo Plus or Bamboo Business. Together, the iFly Loyalty and iFly Res platforms provide Bamboo Airways with an integrated digital platform to manage everything from passenger information to loyalty memberships that will not only enable efficient operations on a day-to-day basis but also minimise revenue leakages and impact of service delivery failures in case of disruption. “A passenger service system is the backbone of an airline, supporting all transactions between a carrier and its customers, and selecting the right partner is one of the single most critical decisions for any airline. We’re proud that Bamboo Airways recognised IBS Software as the ideal partner to support their operations and help them thrive in a competitive market”, said David Friderici, Head of Aviation Passenger Solu-

tions, IBS Software. “We’re equally thrilled to extend our support to Bamboo Airways’ rapidly expanding loyalty programme, which is a testament not only to the strength of our technology but also the depth of our experience in working with airlines of all sizes and commitment to driving their success” he continues. “Bamboo Airways is on an aggressive growth path and IBS Software is excited to be part of the journey”. ‘UNEXPECTED JOURNEY’ TO THE FAMOUS HOBBITON IN NEW ZEALAND

and some of the most famous countrysides in the world. The Hobbiton Movie Set in Newzealand is attracting over 350,000 visitors per year. It was an ‘Unexpected Journey’

that makes this set a famous Hobbiton. In 1998 Peter Jackson was searching for locations for his biggest-ever movie project, New Line Cinema’s three-part film adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The project would require more than 150 locations and a wide variety of spectacular landscapes to bring the epic story of the brave little Hobbits to the screen. Jackson scoured New Zealand’s North and South islands to find the perfect matches for the mythical Middle-earth. Russell Alexander, General manager of Hobbiton Movie Set Tours and unofficial ‘lord of the Shire’ – would be the first to admit life has taken on a whole new landscape. “When they reached the location, it was immediately clear to them that they had found the perfect spot. The concept artists that were with the team just sat down on the grass and started drawing,

placing Hobbit holes in the landscape.” An army of workers – set builders, landscapers, and a thatcher or two – spent nine months on the farm during 1999 preparing the film set. After The Lord of the Rings Trilogy filming finished, the original set was dismantled but the setting developed into a popular tourist attraction. The fact that these significant artifacts leftover from filming commanded such an audience is a testament to the universal pull of these incredibly popular films. The set was rebuilt in 2011 for The Hobbit Trilogy – this time in permanent materials, complete with Hobbit holes, gardens, bridge, and mill, and is now operated by the Alexander family in partnership with Sir Peter Jackson. In 2012, with the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the Green Dragon Inn, the perfect pit stop for a pint-sized Hobbit, featured www.tourismindia.org

in The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies, was recreated on the site. Here is what the stars of the film series had to say about making Middle-earth come to life in New ZealandSir Ian McKellen (Gandalf) “This is the Middle-earth I had always pictured. How can New Zealand not bewitch anyone who visits?” Benedict Cumberbatch (Smaug and the Necromancer) “I had about a week off and I went down to Queenstown 37 and had a fantastic time. I went sky diving, I went paragliding, I went down a luge and the Shotover Jet around the rapids and, I mean I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie so I kind of loved the great outdoors.” Luke Evans (Bard) “A few of us – me, Jimmy Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman – hired a house in Marlborough and went wine tasting. It was an absolutely glorious, amazing way to spend

a weekend. Tasting the exquisite wine was absolutely wonderful. That’s a really great place to visit.”

A must-see attraction while in Staunton is the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse, the only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre in the world. Shakespeare’s original Blackfriars Theatre was housed in a 13th-century monastery; it burned in the 1666 Great Fire of London. After years of research and hard work, the Staunton Blackfriars Playhouse was built in 2001. Since then, it has been showing year-round performances of Shakespeare’s plays and contemporary works, hailed by The Washington Post as “shamelessly entertaining.” The Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia tells the story of the thousands of people who migrated to colonial America, and of the life they created here for themselves and their descendants. and fair-trade ingredients to create refreshing and unique flavors. Every part of the process – from brewing to bottling to flavoring – is done completely by hand. punch. If you are not afraid of adventure (or the dark!), you have a chance for an excursion in the Blue Ridge Tunnel. The Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel, a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark beneath Rockfish Gap, Va., was recently dedicated after 18 years of planning and restoration. Known as the longest railroad tunnel in North America when it was completed in 1858, the nearly mile-long route through Afton Mountain is

now a pedestrian trail that connects to existing trail systems in central Virginia. Flashlights are definitely required. Take a peak inside the Blue Ridge Tunnel and you’ll see why you need a light! Head south to Lexington and Rockbridge County, the southern gateway to the Shenandoah Valley. Here visitors have fast and easy access to Lexington’s “big backyard” – 100,000 acres of public forests, parks, recreation areas, and two rivers where outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels can hike, bike, paddle, fish, and camp. Lined with historic buildings, farm-to-table eateries, bright galleries, and inviting boutiques, downtown Lexington can be explored with a relaxing carriage ride or on foot. Today, its tradition continues with one miller stone grinding premium grains fresh to order. The Mill’s whole grain products are 100% natural, with no additives, preservatives, or bleaches. They are served at select restaurants and hotels throughout Virginia and can be purchased at Wade’s Mill gift shop or online As you wind up your day, don’t miss a stop at one of Virginia’s most famous landmarks, the majestic Natural Bridge State Park. Natural Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark in 1988 and in 2016 became Virginia’s 37th state park.
