39 years and still going! What started as “A View from the Top Ride” is now one of the premier cycling events in Texas! 1983 – It started as a 28 mile ride beginning and ending at the Abilene State Park. Chip Gain from San Angelo was the first winner. It was moved to the Old Settlers Camp Grounds a couple of years later and the name changed to the Tour de Buffalo Gap. 1988 – For one year, the ride was sanctioned by the USCF – United States Cycling Federation. 1990s – The ride name was shortened to the Tour de Gap and BikeTown became one of the main sponsors. 2003 – The Food Bank of Abilene began organizing the ride. 2008 – Bike Town owners Jim and Kelly MacDonald took over the organization of the ride with Food Bank still receiving all the proceeds.. 2016 – The Food Bank ended its 13 year involvement of the Tour de Gap and local cyclist and BikeTown approached Big Brothers Big Sisters to become the new beneficiary. 2017 – The Tour de Gap started a Time Trial on Sunday morning with a finish up on top of Steamboat Mountain. 2019 – The Tour de Gap increased the 27 Mile ride to an even 50K and added some new roads in on the route. We now start using Main Street Station as the start/finish for the Time Trial. 2020 – What else needs to be said – Covid! 2021 – The Tour de Gap changed the 100K route by moving it off of US Hwy 277 and brought in some new roads in South Taylor County. We also change the Time Trial to a 20K distance.
Once again, we appreciate your support of the Tour de Gap! Have Fun – Be Safe – Enjoy the Ride!
Thank you to all of the 2022 Tour de Gap volunteers helping with setup, registration, rest stops, support vehicle drivers, course marshals and spotters. This weekend would not be possible without their help. Be sure and give them a big THANK YOU for the work they do! We’d also like to give a special thanks to Taylor County Emergency Medical Services and the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department for keeping us safe out on the course today!
