FALL IN COLLIERVILLE

Speaking of non-profits supporting our community, the Collierville Arts Council’s annual fundraiser, Arts in the Alley, takes place September 29. This one-of-a-kind event transforms the North Alley of Town Square into a magical space with overhead bistro lights, music, great local food, and plein air artists painting during the event. Proceeds from the event support community theater performances and artistic programs in our Town. Purchase tickets at colliervilleartscouncil.org

Arts in the Alley

Main Street Collierville’s free concert series returns in October with performances by Pam & Terry on October 6 and Southbound on October 20 from 6-8pm in the Gazebo on Town Square.

Up, up, and away! The Collierville Balloon Festival returned to Town, featuring more than 20 hot air balloons, September 17-18, 2022. Spectators viewed a mass ascension of balloons at sunrise (weather permitting) and enjoyed carnival rides, food vendors, live music, and much more. Learn more about the nonprofit that organizes the event to support Collierville schools and educators at colliervilleballoonfestival.com. A similar event in 2021 generated over $400,000 in direct economic impact in the Collierville community.

Late October Town Square events include enjoyable activities for all ages like ‘Scare on The Square’, hosted by the Junior Auxiliary of Collierville and Main Street Collierville on October 21 from 4-7pm, and a free performance of Macbeth by the Tennessee Shakespeare Company on October 22 at 7pm.When we talk about tourism in Collierville, we’re talking about more than just the economic impact of events and visitors in our community. These events contribute to the quality of life, community connectedness, and volunteerism of the place we’re fortunate to call home. I hope you can enjoy some these as we welcome fall to Collierville.

There’s one thing we can probably all agree on —fall in Collierville is a wonderful and exciting time! With the heat finally starting to break, local events are just around the corner.

One of the exciting components of my job as the Director of Economic Development for the Town of Collierville is hearing citizens’ wants and needs when it comes to commercial development, especially retail and restaurant expansions and relocations. But what do these desired restaurants and retailers require, and how well does our community strategically match their requirements? Let me shine some light on this part of the economic development journey.

BUT WHAT DO THEY WANT?

We Want Retail

14 TOURCOLLIERVILLE.COM september/october 2022

We have been talking with many of the specialty grocers for years about the strengths of our community and what it would look like for them to do business in our Town. We have had numerous discussions with Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, Earth Fare, Lucky’s, Natural Grocers, and Fresh Market, to name a few. Some are not expanding now, so we plant seeds, while positioning ourselves as an option for those who are. For example, Trader Joe’s shared they like “traffic

jams,” and want to be in what they call the “economic epicenter of a community.” I was not surprised when they chose their Germantown location, based on what they had shared. Full service breakfast, brunch, and lunch restaurant, First Watch, requires a location with a minimum of 30,000 vehicles per day on the ‘going to work’ side of the street, in an area with a strong daytime population, an elevated corporate presence near hospitals and universities, and located on an endcap in a vibrant center with high-performing co-tenants. Where should we put them? In the meantime, here comes Staks! Pancake Kitchen. Connors Steakhouse, an upscale American casual dining restaurant, that does $6,500,000 in annual sales per store, desires a population of 250,000 within a 5-mile-radius in a community that will support a strategy of 30% of sales coming from lunch volume. Chicken Salad Chick requires at least 30,000 vehicles per day in a free standing, multi-tenant outparcel near offices, hospitals, universities, and other strong lunch and dinner high traffic generators. Freddy’s wants to be near a Chick-Fil-A, Taziki’s near a grocery anchor, and Mugshots pursues locations at “Main & Main.”

We will continue to promote our demographics, to include population density, education levels, affluence, as well as our corporate partner assets and desirable real estate availability, all with the strategy of bringing vibrant and attractive new businesses to Town. #ColliervilleStrong

My vision for the community is that every child and youth feels supported and loved by others. Encouraging participation with the Collierville Food Pantry, the Collierville Animal Shelter, and various other service organizations in the area helps to make responsible adults. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10).

Supporting Collierville’s youth will enrich your life. Studies show that kids who have support and a cheering squad enjoy participating and are more likely to stay involved in extracurricular activities and their community later in life. As a community we should make it a priority to attend a school or youth football/basketball game, buy

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10).

School has started back again, meaning busy schedules, fall activities, and of course the upcoming holidays. It is a busy time. Even though we are busy, we still need to take time for the youth in our community. I am sure everyone has probably heard the old proverb “It takes a village to raise a child.” That’s why, as a community, we need to support the children and youth in Collierville. Research finds that the presence of one or more caring, committed adults in a child’s life increases the likelihood that children and youth will flourish, and become productive adults. “You can’t have too many adults who love your kid” says Bruce Feller, author of The Council of Dads. We all have children and young people in our lives-members of our family or extended family, kids who live in our neighborhoods or communities, and young people we encounter in the course of our daily lives. We are all in this together, we all play a part in the development of children and young people around us. What we do matters,

We’re Finley, Lucille, and Patches, and even though we look different, we have one thing in common. We were surrendered to the Collierville Animal Shelter from loving homes.

Some humans believe surrendered animals are in shelters because they have a flaw, health, or behavioral issue, and this couldn’t be further from the truth! Most of us were surrendered due to issues in our humans’ lives, not ours. So we’re here to share our stories that surrender animals are ready and able to become life-long, loving companions.

We’re Finley and Lucille, and our hearts were broken on the day our human passed away. I’m Finley, a sweet and affectionate, three-year-old, black kitty who is so social they call me the “Walmart greeter” because I speak to everyone and I’ve never met a stranger. I will cuddle on your lap forever.

I’m Patches, a four-year-old female, orange-andwhite kitty. When I was adopted from the shelter, I was the first cat for my young family. When they discovered that their son was highly allergic to cats, they tried medication, but his allergies persisted. My humans were devastated the day they returned me to the shelter. I’m a sweet and gentle cat who loves to be brushed and loves to cuddle. I would make the best bed buddy for any humans who love to snuggle!

Lucille is a one-year-old tortie who is just as sweet! She will lay on her back forever for pets and love time. We love to snuggle together and would do well as a pair.

P.S. Don’t forget to follow the shelter on Facebook and Instagram @AdoptColliervilleAnimals for news and updates on all our residents. Julie Weaver. Collierville Animal Services is located at 559 E. South Street, Collierville. Call 901-457-2670 to find your perfect companion!

The time we spent in loving homes makes us MORE, not less, adoptable! Now that you know why animals might be surrendered, maybe you’d like to add a sweet cat like us to YOUR family? We need homes, and so do a lot of other cute, sweet, and deserving animals at the shelter. If you can open your homes, we will open our hearts!

riday nights during football season are arguably the biggest events in Town. Preparation for kickoff begins months in advance and it takes a combination of hard work and raw talent to pull it off. The Town rallies behind the event so much so that it has become seamlessly embedded in our culture. Yard signs show support of the school. Season schedules are placed in business windows. Dozens of shirts pass by with mascot pride. The aspirations of the community seem to fluctuate with the win/loss record, as talk of “the game” floats around Town until the next FridayInnight.this ‘Friday Night Lights’ issue we feature the four local Varsity High School teams: the Briarcrest Christian School Saints,

Collierville High School Dragons, Houston High School Mustangs, and the St. George’s Independent School Gryphons. While we tend to associate the centerpiece of ‘game night’ with the football team, the reality is that the school band, cheer team, and fans are all integral parts of what makes these nights lasting memories. We’ve highlighted them too!

Whether you attended high school fifty years ago or are in high school now, went to a public or private school, were involved in athletics or showed support from the stands, we all share a common bond when it comes to partaking in the Friday night ritual. And, it's no coincidence you’ll find the heartbeat of the community surrounding the 120 yards of home-field turf come Friday night.

Looking back over the last couple months and the transition from the lazy summer days to the hustle and bustle school starting, its easy to get stressed out but it’s

There are many things you can do to improve your curb appeal outside but implementing a well thought out landscape plan is one of the most effective ways. It just so happens that fall is the perfect time of the year to plant new plants, trees and shrubs. This can be a do it yourself project or one you hire out from the beginning. Either way my recommendation is to hire a landscape architect to come up with your plan then go from there.

After you get your new landscaping installed you can sit back and enjoy your home’s new look and buyers will have a great first impression of your home when you’re ready to sell.

First impressions are important in life and also in Real Estate. You can have the most up-to-date home on the inside but if you have bad curb appeal then the buyer’s opinion is already being skewed in the wrong direction as soon as they pull up to your home. Likewise you can have a so-so home on the inside but if you have great curb appeal the buyer’s opinion starts off in a positive way.

“so later she can decorate with pops of color to update the space and make it feel fresh and new. I’m a big proponent of the 3D renderings, because not many people have the ability to visualize the space. It’s a lot less expensive to make a change to an image in the program, than it is to install everything and have regrets. In our Showroom we can pull all the sample selections together and see how the colors

Bathesheba Sams used the Designer Wholesale showroom to make selections for her kitchen. Sams chose her new kitchen cabinets — described as a “vanilla bean” color — and hardware from the Designer Wholesale showroom. Her granite countertops keep the cream color scheme consistent while incorporating the darker cabinets found in the dining room. “I like neutrals because then I

can do a lot more with colors,” Sams explained. Designer Wholesale Designer, Steven Clement, helped Sams visualize the final remodel during their ‘design and selection’ meeting with a 3D rendering. “Keeping things neutral like Bathsheba wanted is a timeless option,” shares Clement,

common issue DIY homeowners face is starting out with grandiose plans, selecting paint colors from one store and flooring from another, without seeing the entire design elements laid out before demo begins. This key piece of ‘visualizing the end result’ is something that can be done with expert designers right here in Collierville. “We opened our showroom as a true one-stop shopping experience,” shares Designer Wholesale owner, Justin Herter. “Our customers can use our onsite interior designers, at no charge to them, to help them be intentional when it comes to finding all the materials needed for their kitchen or bathroom remodel.”

Custom cabinetry and furniture can transform your space, creating a statement the room deserves. Sams’ dining room table and the kitchen island were both custom built. The island itself is mobile, with ample storage space in the form of large drawers. “The kitchen didn’t really have enough room for [an island], but I wanted one. So, they built a moveable one. I’ve slid it down to the end of the kitchen and served charcuterie off of it,” explained Sams. These custom pieces for Sams were locally built. “Unlike big box stores, the options with us are endless and custom for your space,” shares Clement. “For Bathsheba, the stain on the kitchen table and bench perfectly match the cabinetry stain. Having the ability to make custom furniture and millwork for our clients allows us to truly finish out the space.”

interact. Not everyone understands that color is relational to what’s around it. I can help with that.”

When it comes to transforming your room, you want a team of contractors and designers to help create a vision for your space, full of intentional design choices that you love, before the first swing of a hammer.
