MARGIN LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Keith Essary
co-PubliSher Shannon Essary
“It is a curious thought, but it is only when you see people looking ridiculous that you realize just how much you love them.”
creative direction Michael Stires
-Agatha Christie Spring is a little bit ridiculous isn’t it? It feels new to me each year, even though the 901 is nothing if not predictable in the spring. The pollen leads to flowers, the grass gets greener, we drop the sleeves, and antihistamine sales skyrocket. Nonetheless, doesn’t it just feel like new? The changes hit each one of us a little differently, but we all feel the motivation that comes from witnessing growth. We feel that nothing represents the essence of spring more than the celebration of a new marriage. Much like spring, each ceremony offers something new and different: a different and unique personality of Love. It’s the handwritten vows and the dog trotting down the aisle with a ring. It’s the groom’s tears as he sees his soon-to-be wife for the first time in her wedding dress. It’s uncle Bobby looking ridiculous by doing the “stanky leg” in the middle of the wooden dance floor, despite groans from the couple’s grandparents. Because when it comes to things like weddings, it’s the little differences that matter the most. To celebrate spring and love in this year’s Bridal issue, we’ve included an Easter directory, a Summer Camp guide, and expert advice from local contributors on sorting your finances before the big day, planning your honeymoon, and giving that dreaded ‘toast’ at your best friend’s wedding. We’ve also featured several weddings, from Collierville traditional to destination, with photography highlighting all of the little details. The facts remain: the sun is coming out and spring is on its way. This spring, as you navigate through new experiences, emotions, and opportunities, we urge you to take notice of all the little details - it might just make the biggest difference.

Puppy Love Because you’re never too old to fall in love!
Is there someone you’ve had a crush on? Where just seeing them makes your heart race? For me, that’s Lucy. My name is Stanley and I live at the Collierville Animal Shelter. The object of my affection, Lucy, lives here too. I still remember the day I spotted her through the play yard fence - a beautiful, purebred beagle with the cutest little waddle I’d ever seen. A little snooping around the shelter revealed that she was close to ten-years-old and arrived as an owner surrender, after her humans could no longer care for her. After that, I kept my ears open and heard the humans talking about how she was laid back, had the funniest little bark, and that she was a little bit plump and working on her figure. So, how’s a guy
SPONSORED BY: 14
supposed to stand out? I bided my time until the day the humans put us in the play yard together. I made my move by playing it cool, being a gent, and letting her have first stab at the toys. The rest is history! Stanley - is that how you remember it? Playing it cool? OK, I’ll let you have that. And to be fair, I’ll admit I noticed you too. You were also a purebred beagle, and a real sweetheart. I loved how you were so social, you loved all dogs and humans, that you were vocal, and funny, and I’ll admit, a girl always likes a man who can sit on command, haha! But I really fell for you when I learned we had something in common: a mutual love of food! Hey humans, Stanley and I are here at the Collierville Animal Shelter, so please stop by and meet us. We would love to find our forever homes! And as much as
we enjoy each other, it does not have to be together. There are so many beautiful and affectionate cats and dogs up here, and even though we make friends in the shelter, nothing comes close to the joy of finding our humans and going to our forever home. We are vaccinated and our adoption fee is only $50, which includes our micro-chipping, licenses, and our spay/neuter expense.
xoxo Lucy & Stanley
Because all you need is love… and a Lucy and Stanley!

SUPERVISED
SCREEN As the days grow longer and spring break draws near, children will be tempted to spend their extra hours behind screens. Don’t let these temptations become your household reality! To limit how much screen time your child has, you can institute a reward system: 1. Select readily available tokens that your child cannot easily access, such as stickers or playing cards. 2. Think of some helpful tasks that your child can do around the house. Tell her that she can earn a reward for each task she completes without being told to do it. Examples include: cleaning up after herself, bringing in the mail, feeding the pets, and setting the table. Explain the concept of exchanging the token for a prize or privilege. This system will also help your child learn and understand the concept of spending money to purchase a product. 3. Explain to your child that each time he wants screen time, he must hand in one of his tokens. Set a time limit for each token that is suitable for the age of your child. For example, one token could equal ten minutes of screen time. You may want to set a limit for the number of tokens that your child can use each day. Write down these rules and explain them well to stop any arguments before they start. 4. Let your child know that if she has no tokens, she will have to do more chores to earn screen time. 16

TIME
Your little ones will be so excited to earn their tokens that they will not realize how many helpful tasks they are completing! DON’T HAVE A SPRING BREAK? Learning is year-round and life-long! It is just as important to foster a love for reading and learning during breaks from school as during the “school year.” If your child is at home, plan special times to read together, take fun trips to the library, and enjoy outdoor nature experiences. If your child is in preschool, he or she should be exposed to reading, math, and hands-on learning experiences every day that you can build on at home. If you have an elementary age child, look for age-appropriate summer camps or learning experiences that will build on your child’s interests and promote learning. Programs like The Goddard School’s school-age summer program may be an option, where children ages 5 to 8 are immersed in fun, hands-on STEM activities and projects that make learning, discovery, problem-solving, and team building a blast. Whatever your plans, the best early childhood learning comes from hands-on, real-life experiences, not a screen, and you are your child’s first and life-long teacher!
For more information on why The Goddard School of Collierville is the place for fun and learning, please contact Cathy Jo Mattson at 901-861-0108.

O U R F I R ST H O M E While buying a home can be an arduous task as-is, it can be especially difficult navigating the real estate market as newlyweds. Matt Morgan of Crye-Leike Realtors assisted newlyweds, Michelle and John Trull, with purchasing their first home together in Collierville, and they couldn’t be happier with the result. “Neither one of us are from Memphis, and I moved here from Knoxville... Memphis has its charms, of course, but we’re not the Midtown type,” says Michelle. “We liked the safety of Collierville, and knew that they had really good schools here. We’re both outdoors people, so we can walk and bike, and we’ve taken our bikes around pretty much everywhere. We love the access to Johnson Park and like that they make it easy for bicyclists in Collierville.” “We’re both in the aviation industry, so this is definitely not our first move, and probably won’t be our last. However, we do hope to be here for a while. This feels good [moving into Collierville], in that we honestly feel like we’re settling in, because we’re together. For the last fifteen years in the aviation industry, I’ve felt very transient,” says John. “This is the first time that I’ve felt like I can put the bags down, take my clothes out, and hang ‘em up.” As far as what they’ve learned in purchasing their first house together, the couple says not to get in a hurry: “Give yourself some time and make sure you’re not in a rush when you do it. Matt [Morgan] was great as far as helping us find the perfect place. Definitely look at more than one place; you should at least look at a few. He [Matt] helped us find the perfect compromise between a really nice, safe neighborhood, while still having great access to things.” Whether looking to move to a new home in Collierville or in surrounding areas, CryeLeike Realtors makes the process easy.

The Marriage of a
e thought the perfect accompaniment to this year’s Bridal issue would be a celebration of the longest standing marriage in Collierville. We did our research and believe 72 years of marriage takes the cake! Enjoy their love story, and newlyweds, go grab a pen… you’ll want to take notes! Dale (91) and Griff (92) Griffin of Collierville met for the first time in 1944 at an all-day singing dinner on the grounds of a Baptist Church in Tula, Mississippi. Griff was sixteen at the time and had gone to the revival-style event because Dale’s uncle was a singer and taught singing school at different communities. “It was a community event,” says Griff, “and it was the very first time I ever saw her,” he
headed home, Griff gathered the courage to ask for Dale’s address, “because she was good lookin’ and I wanted to see her again!” Fast forward to 1945 and Griff proposed. The engagement lasted six months because Griff says, “we were both in high school and had to wait until we could get out of school to get married.” Dale’s older brother and sister-in-law traveled with the couple to Pontotoc to get married. “Things were a lot different then than they are now. We went to a Presbyterian preacher’s house to get married,” says Griff. “We had our own pastor where we went to church, but we just couldn’t get him in time,” says Dale. Dale’s sister-in-law knew of the preacher in

Find Your Place Dale & Griff Griffin - 2019 Pontotoc, so the four took off in the car to tie the knot! “We just didn’t have a bunch of family [at weddings] back then,” says Griff. “You just got someone to go along with you.” The two couldn’t remember for certain, but thought Griff got Dale a corsage for their big day, May 16th, 1946. Griff got quiet for a minute as the memories were coming back to him and says, “We just didn’t have nothing. We didn’t do it in a certain church. We didn’t spend $5,000 dollars on it. And it lasted 72 years, so I guess that’s pretty good!” A short time after getting married the couple went on their honeymoon. “A guy who lived in Tula had a little garage there and got married before I did, but was in the service,” says Griff. “When he got out, they never had been on a honeymoon. He found out I was getting married and he said, ‘I tell you what we’re going to do’ - and at the time, I didn’t have a car - and he says, ‘we’ll just go to New Orleans!’ He had an old car that he worked on all the time. So we took off to New Orleans together, and we probably never would have made it down there and back had he not been a mechanic!” Dale remembers having a good time, saying, “Neither one of us had ever been much of nowhere and it was a big deal for us!” The couple now has 2 children, 3 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren and have called Collierville home since 1995. When asked the secret to a long and happy marriage, the answer came down to commitment. “I didn’t think I’d live this long honestly,” says Griff. “But when we got married, there wasn’t divorce. But she’s not a spendthrift. She did a lot of sewing and doing for the kids when they were growing up,” he remembers. “And he was always there when I needed him,” says Dale.

FINANCES
For couples planning to get married, a meeting with a financial professional is an increasingly important step along the way. A couple needs to plan for the successful blending of two sets of finances and a prosperous life together, which means it’s vital to discuss money decisions before “yours” and “mine” become “ours.” Finances can be one of the hardest topics for couples to discuss. There are so many questions. Who will pay the bills? How will we make buying decisions? How much debt are we bringing into the marriage? What are our spending habits? Are we spenders or savers? Sometimes these discussions are easier if an independent financial advisor can facilitate and help keep the discussion on track. Differences over finances is one of the most common issues that leads to conflicts among newlyweds, but there is no reason for money issues to become a problem if you both go into marriage with your eyes wide open. Before you walk down the aisle, take the time to understand your partner’s financial upbringing and philosophy and lay the foundation for a transparent, co-managed financial future. Money is simply a tool to help you live the life you want. A financial plan can help you understand the following:
26
•
How much do you currently have saved and invested?
•
What is your current cash flow?
TO U R CO L L I E RV I L L E .CO M
march/april 2 0 1 9
•
What transitions are you currently experiencing, or expect to experience? (examples include changing jobs, having children, paying down debt or purchasing a home)
•
Do I feel comfortable with my level of financial obligations? (examples include debt, housing expenses, leisure activities, and healthcare expenses)
•
What are our goals, and do we understand the costs of these goals?
By incorporating these factors into your planning, you can begin to understand what needs to change (or not change) in order to live the best life possible without overextending yourself. You may even be pleasantly surprised to learn you are really doing better than you expected! Financial planning is the process of using financial assets to achieve life goals. It’s the link between the financial resources you have and the life you want to lead. Every stage of life requires financial preparation and adjustment. This first stage together is key to starting out on the right path. By taking an integrated approach, incorporating a review of assets, liabilities, insurance, cash flow, and taxes, you can raise your awareness of your current financial position and help plan for the future by relating money to your quality of life, now and into the future.
We all have different values and principles regarding money. Each of us has unique history, present circumstances, and future hopes. By focusing only on numbers, we miss enjoying life now and in the future, because we only concentrate on accumulating wealth. A financial plan, designed with your new life together as its foundation, is designed to build freedom, relieve the pressure of not knowing where you stand, and ensure your plan meets your goals. There is no greater freedom, and no greater wealth, than living the best life you can with the money you have.

GAME “The goal is to turn data into information, and information into insight.” - Carly Fiorina, former executive president and chairman of Hewlett-Packard Co.

ata and information is a critically important component of our daily lives. How many times have you thought or heard a form of this: “What does the data say? What do the numbers suggest? Have you run the numbers? Better living through data. It’s a numbers game.” In economic development, the numbers are vital. Almost daily, I am sharing demographic details, incentives feedback, competing cities comparatives, tax information, commute times, education profiles, ACT scores, proximity to assets info, and a handful of other data sets. The data and information tell a story, and in economic development recruitment, storytelling is the name of the game. Let me share some numbers with you and tell the compelling story behind them.
$76M:
Seventy-six million… that’s a big number. What does it mean? What does it represent? $76M is the total capital investment in land, buildings, and tangible personal property (computers, furniture, equipment, etc.) that our five key business partners, Helena Agri Enterprises, MCR Safety, Orgill, CCL Label, and Mueller Industries (excluding FedEx WTC, and we will get to them in a minute), have made in our community. In order for these top flight organizations to receive tax incentives, they had to make not only a commitment to a certain level of high paying jobs, but also a commitment to fully invest capital in our Town. These capital investments in land, buildings, and personal property will ultimately be taxed, providing the fuel that will continue to sustain our community. We value these strong corporate partnerships.

3,600+:
3,600+, another big number. As we have shared here before, Collierville is a burgeoning corporate campus expansion and relocation destination. Between FedEx World Technology Center, Orgill, Helena Agri Enterprises, JuicePLUS, MCR Safety, and Mueller Industries, there are over 3,600 high quality corporate headquarters jobs in town. This impacts and influences residential real estate, retail sales tax revenues, and future expansions. Collierville is an excellent community for these organizations to recruit to and retain from. With over 400 acres of developable land zoned for office in a town with an established corporate campus base, you can expect continued corporate HQ projects moving in our direction.
10,000 PER YEAR:
We are proud of our relationship with FedEx, especially the leadership and team at the 1.2M square foot, 2,500 employee World Technology Center on Bailey Station. FedEx WTC moved to our community in the late 90s and their positive impact on our Town continues today. Did you know that FedEx WTC receives over 10,000 non-badged visitors per year? Do the math… that’s over 800 people per month coming to Collierville, staying in our hotels, dining in our restaurants, and shopping at our stores. That’s economic impact! Additionally, with 2,500 employees maintaining average salaries in the high $90k range, over $200M in payroll moves throughout our town on a daily basis. Also, approximately 700 of the 2,500 employees live in Collierville. With median home values currently sitting at $300k, that’s over $200M in residential home values.
53% & 33%:
The I-69 federal highway system runs from Port Huron, MI to Brownsville, TX, with the geographic midpoint being Collierville, TN. Now that the I-269 component of that system is open through our Town’s southeast zone, running West to I-55, you will soon see elevated development activity in that part of the community. What will the impact be? By 2020, it is projected that 53% of the truck borne traffic out of Mexico and 33% of the truck borne traffic out of Canada will utilize the I-69 system. Collierville’s proximity to the economic network (roads, river, rail, and runway) strategically positions us for transportation related economic development for years to come.

24:
Speaking of proximity to the economic network, Collierville is a mere 24 minutes to the FedEx Ground Hub in Olive Branch, MS. Can you say E-Commerce?! The FedEx Ground Hub can handle packages up to 150 pounds. Consequently, e-commerce companies will utilize FedEx’s services to quickly and efficiently move products to their clients. Our location, at the crossroads of I-269 / SR-385 / US 72, allows uncongested and timely access to this vital asset. With over 300 acres of developable land zoned for industrial uses (warehouse & logistics) at this crossroads, e-commerce related organizations will be looking to place facilities in Collierville.
7 WALMARTS:
What in the world does that represent? In 2018, commercial development projects either announced, started, or completed, represent over 700,000 square feet of space. With the average Walmart store being approximately 100,000 square feet, the 2018 development impact is the equivalent to 7 Walmarts! Our dynamic community is obviously a place where developers and organizations desire to invest. Our strong demographics, growth projections, first class amenities, award winning schools, excellent parks & trails, educated workforce, low crime, and updated infrastructure positions us for many more “Walmarts” to be developed in our Town.

2019’s WEDDING STYLE GUIDE Are you getting married this year? Have you given thought as to what you want for your hair? Fads come and go and hairstyles change, just as the seasons do. That said, here’s your style guide for all things hair in 2019: One thing’s for sure, this year promises to deliver lots of color! Move over blush and pink, because Living Coral is the hot color for everything this year. This bright, pinky-orange hue will influence florals, makeup, bridesmaids dresses, and color schemes. All things earth tone will also be sought after, again, this year. It’s all about the muted simplicity of greens, blues, berry, and cinnamon tones. Bringing the outdoors in with the use of cut greenery, unexpected pampas grasses, and lively concoctions of garden roses, eucalyptus, rosemary sprigs, and anemone, to name a few, will all be trendy in 2019. I love that the modern bride is choosing a sophisticated, yet relaxed style. Hair trends will continue to reflect the bohemian look for the perfectly imperfect hairstyle. As a stylist, an “undone” chignon or textured braid that looks effortless, but will last till midnight, is the way to go. Softly swept off the face hairlines, with low textured knots, are a perfect bridal hairstyle choice for the modern romantic vibe. If you aren’t quite the updo type, consider a cascading “down-do.” Picture a collection of artistically integrated curls or beachy waves cascading down the back, giving the feel of your hair down. It’s the newest requested look of bridal parties! 30

Hair embellishments and veils are making a big comeback this year, as well. You can really personalize your look with the use of hair vines, crystal brooches, or antique pins. Fresh faces with monochromatic peach and coral tones are in this year along with all the glowy highlighters, producing radiant bridal skin for her best day. Wedding day makeup is accented best with soft, fluttery lashes! The luxury of lash extensions is the best bang for your buck to last for every photo opportunity, from bridal showers to the honeymoon! You can really have fun with bridal makeup, utilizing shimmer for the eyes, or going simple with a soft palette of shadows complemented by a natural pout. Schedule a practice run-through of your favorite looks with your style expert before your big day! Whether your style is boho, classic, or ultra formal, you will see a rise in classically cut bridal gowns. Thanks to Meghan Markle’s chic, elegant, non embellished gown, this will also become a top choice for 2019 brides. It’s back to basics with simple shapes! Let’s not forget HIM! As for modern menswear, grooms and groomsmen alike will be seen in colorful yet deep toned suits with the quintessential slim, tapered fit. C’mon guys, ditch the sneaks and splurge for those leather oxfords! Three-piece suits are coming on strong this year for the super sleek groom. His style will need to include a fresh, dapper hairstyle that is fit for GQ. It can be textured or perfectly in place, but let’s make sure he’s camera ready - even the beard! The pairing of a high shine pomade, with a disconnected fade cut, will never go out of style. He needs to look and feel like a million, too!

bout 40% of engagements happen between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, according to WeddingWire.com. Rarely do couples get a second to enjoy their engagement before the conversation quickly shifts to wedding planning. Friends and family are asking, “When?!” In the midst of all the details, you may find yourself questioning, “What type of wedding is right for us?” There is no shortage of marriage traditions that can be adapted to your own vows. The type of traditions represented on your big day depend entirely on the couple, and more times than not, cultural backgrounds tend to play a big role in the decision making. Some customs may be in your family for generations and you intend on incorporating these distinctions in your ceremony, while others enjoy the freedom of choices in a non-traditional setting. Many weddings include both traditional and non-traditional elements creating a day best-suited for them! No matter your preference, your ceremony is a representation of who you are as a couple, and ultimately, you get to choose how to make your day one to remember. Religious or secular, traditionally planned or impromptu, at its core a wedding is a ‘Celebration of Love.’ Tour Collierville honors that celebration by sharing several local weddings that have embraced their unique style. These couples married in a variety of venues - from historic familyinfluenced churches, to rustic outdoor settings, and even multiday celebrations. Each couple stayed true to who they are and incorporated themselves into ‘all the little things’ that made their big day special. We wish all of our newlyweds much love, laughter, and happily ever after!

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re either married or are getting married soon. According to the Pew Research Center, half of Americans 18 or older were married in 2017. In other words, roughly 50% of the American population that are of age to get married, will get married. I’d also like to note, however, that Americans are staying single longer. The median age to get married for guys is 30 years old and 28 years old for women (first marriage), which is, as Pew Research points out, the highest point so far on record. That means that a lot of you men out there haven’t bought a ring yet, and you just might need some advice. After all, as the ladies don’t hesitate to point out, this whole proposal and engagement thing is pretty serious business. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered with some expert advice on picking out the perfect ring for your perfect soul mate, starting with budget.
BUDGET
Did you know there is an unsaid rule of how much you should spend on her most important finger jewelry? I didn’t until recently, and everyone seems to think something different. The rule I’ve heard most consistently would probably be three months pay. I’d keep this in mind, but who am I to tell you how much to spend? Some of you will get married earlier in your careers, some of you will get married after dating for 10 years, and some of you will get married after dating just a few months. Every situation is 46

different; just know that the lady in your life is going to look at that ring on her finger, A LOT. Her opinion is most important, but keep in mind that her friends will be quick to pass judgement, as well. Don’t buy her something that’s going to turn her finger green, but you also don’t want to be going to her for grocery money the week after you propose, either, because you’ve blown your life’s savings. Just be smart and intentional, which brings me to the main point of advice we received from the 901 jewelry experts: Know your budget before “serious shopping.”
TRADITIONAL VS. TRENDY
Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty, starting with the difference between a wedding band and an engagement ring. The engagement ring is what you’ll propose with and most often costs more than the wedding band, due to the fact that it has a center stone and the wedding band does not. The wedding bands are traditionally exchanged during the ceremony when you both share vows, and they are generally more subtle than the engagement ring, again, because the engagement ring will have a center stone. In the most general sense, there are two aesthetic categories of rings (this applies to both wedding bands and engagement rings): Traditional and Trendy. There are a myriad of options that determine whether a ring is Traditional or Trendy, such as Shape, Setting, Cut, and Color. You might have also heard of the four C’s: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat (see chart for definitions).
WHAT IT ALL MEANS
Now that you know the four C’s, let’s talk about some of the other options, like Shape. The most traditional shape (we’re talking about the diamond here) is completely round, or circular. Other shapes include pear, marquise, oval, and princess-cut (e.g., a square shape). I think most people would agree that a pear shape diamond would land you on the trendierside. The Setting is also important, which has to do with how the diamond is mounted. The most traditional sense here would be a prong setting, which typically involves two or more prongs that hold the diamond onto the ring. Another type of setting would be bezel, which consists of a metal rim that circles the entire diamond. Most of the time when Style is mentioned, one is determining whether the ring should have a Solitaire setting, or not. Solitaire is by far the most traditional style, as it means simply that there is just one diamond mounted. One of the trendier styles you’ll see these days is a Halo, which is a bunch of little diamonds mounted to surround the center diamond. As you can see, there are a lot of options that determine whether or not the ring is Traditional or Trendy. Several of the most popular trends over
the last few years might include a halo setting, or ditching the center diamond for a colored birthstone or gemstone (e.g., sapphire, emerald, or ruby). When it comes to bands, the most traditional color is yellow gold, followed by what many perceive as modern-traditional in white gold or platinum, with rose gold coming in as trendy over the last few years. All that said, guys, your ring search will go much smoother if you have an idea on whether your lady favors trendy or traditional. It will also behoove you to know her ring size, but if you don’t, always go big. The last thing you want to happen is her not be able to fit the ring on her finger when you pop the big question you can always get it resized later. I know you’re itching to hit the shiny trail of ring shopping, but before you go, here’s a quick recap of what we’ve learned: 1. Know your budget before any “serious shopping.” Find a price sweet spot; remember, just because you’re getting married doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay rent next month. 2. An engagement ring is different than a wedding band and each are given on different occasions (generally). 3. There are two aesthetic categories of rings: Traditional and Trendy. Knowing which of these categories your significant other favors will make the buying process much smoother. 4. The myriad of options (remember the four C’s!) to choose from help determine whether a ring is Traditional or Trendy.

5. Either know her ring size (she’s your best friend, man!), or go big and resize later. Special thanks to the 901 jewelers/ experts who aided in our research: Glenn Clark Jewelers, Hollie Winter Fine Jewelry, The Upper Level, and Platinum Jewelers Germantown! Source:

RAISE YOUR
GLASS Several of you may find yourselves preparing for a toast in the coming year, so take this advice to heart from CHS Speech and Debate Coach, Jeff Robbins, with his tips on overcoming the nervous tendencies of public speaking.
Make a Plan
You might be asked to give a toast months in advance, or possibly just a few minutes beforehand. Alternatively, you might be asked to “say just a few words.” Regardless of the request, make a plan. Think in this order: Introduce yourself and explain your relation to the couple, communicate what you like about their relationship (include an anecdote), then finish by wishing them well in the future.
Keep it Simple and Genuine
Don’t try to be something you are not. Using the normal language you would use, speak about the relationship from your point of view. Using more complex language than the speaker is used to is one of the places where people get tripped up. If your toast sounds like a school essay, you did it wrong. Oh and by the way, you are not required to be funny. Don’t force comedy into your toast if you haven’t had much time to prepare.
Don’t Go Viral
This is really obvious. Do not get inebriated before you speak. Seriously. I know you are nervous but don’t do it - it will end badly for you. Also, don’t tell inappropriate jokes or anecdotes. Before you say anything, ask yourself this simple question: Would I want this said about me in front of my friends and family?
Bonus
Carry a handkerchief. Not because it’s classy (it is), but because you need an exit strategy if everything goes wrong. If you get up there and blank, start to say something and then act like your voice caught in your throat. Take a pause. Exhale audibly. Move the microphone away from your mouth and act frustrated, like you can’t believe this is happening. Now, take your handkerchief, and dab at your eyes (making them slightly red). Do you remember what you were going to say? If so, jump right back in. If not, uh-oh, you were too overcome with emotion. Skip to the end and wish them well for the future! BUILDING In January, I had the opportunity to travel to Israel and visit the holy sites on a Christian pilgrimage. On the first day of our trip, we visited Cana of Galilee, the site of Jesus’ first miracle in which he turned water into wine for a wedding celebration at the behest of his mother. While we were in the basement of a church built over the spot where this miracle took place, I noticed a minister performing a ceremony for several couples who had come to Cana of Galilee to renew their wedding vows. What better place to renew your vows than the wedding site where Jesus performed his first miracle! In that moment, I was reminded of a lesson we receive from Ecclesiastes 4:912. Whether a couple is renewing their marriage vows, or an engaged couple is standing at the altar reciting wedding vows for the very first time, we all need to remember that marriage involves three important individuals: you, your spouse, and God. Ecclesiastes talks about the value of a friend. Chapter 4, verse 9 reads, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil” (NRSV). This same sentiment can be heard in the words of Lyn Collins’ 1972 funk hit “Think (About It):” “It takes two to make a thing go right. It takes two to make it out of sight!” The Scripture goes on to say that friends help each other up, keep each other warm, and watch each other’s backs in a fight. Then verse 12 ends with the words, “A threefold cord is not quickly broken.” 50

A
COMMUNIT Y
Up to this point, we’ve only read about two friends. So, why does a THREEfold cord suddenly appear? This is where God is reminding us that His presence is a necessary part of any relationship, including the marriage relationship. As we consider God’s presence in the midst of our relationships, we must first acknowledge that we are made in God’s image. We see this in Genesis 1:27 where it says, “So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (NRSV). Those who practice the Christian faith believe in the Triune God. In the midst of the Trinity’s mystery exists a community: God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Just like our Creator, we are meant for community, and at the center of our community is God. It is God who blesses and sustains our communities. In our hearts, we know there is no life apart from the Divine Presence. Jesus demonstrates this with his own life by surrounding himself with friends and family as he begins his three year ministry in Israel. He healed individuals, families, and entire groups of people. Before He was arrested and ultimately sentenced to death on a cross, He taught his disciples a new commandment: “Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another” (John 13:34). When a couple marries, they start a new family. If they decide to have children or to adopt, then their community
grows larger. God desires to live at the center of this community, to bless these relationships, to serve as a necessary strand in the threefold cord. Whether you’re planning a wedding and preparing for a lifelong marriage this year, or you’re celebrating another anniversary with your spouse, I encourage you to always put God first. Abide in God and remember that you are made in God’s image. God the Father exists as community, so be mindful of the community surrounding you and your significant other. God the Son cared deeply about relationships, so remember to invest time and energy into the relationship and friendship you share with your spouse. God the Holy Spirit holds everything together, strengthening your marriage so that it will not be broken. Love each other the way Christ loves you. Treat your spouse the way Christ would treat them. And together, ask yourselves how the two of you may make a difference in your world, in your community. God is part of yours and your spouse’s threefold cord, ready to bless you both as you tie the knot. Thanks be to God!

Honeymoon Planning: TIPS TO CREATE THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME etting married is an epic journey. Setting up appointments, selecting a date with the venue, meeting with photographers and florists, the caterer, and simply trying to figure out who all is coming to the wedding in the first place! Through all the hustle, we urge people not to forget about their honeymoon or wait until the day is almost here… because towards the end, all you will think about is the honeymoon. You’ll be anxiously awaiting the time to get away, relax, and focus on one another for a few days! A honeymoon should be one of the most memorable and enjoyable moments of a couple’s entire relationship. That said, without taking a few key steps, the ultimate trip can unravel with hassles and stressful moments. So, now that it’s time to plan your honeymoon, what exactly were you envisioning? To get the imaginative juices flowing, here’s a quick list of some of the most popular honeymoon destinations: POPULAR HONEYMOON DESTINATIONS • Island Honeymoons: The Caribbean, Hawaii, Fiji, Tahiti, and the Maldives • U.S. Honeymoons: California, Florida, Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Disney • Latin American Honeymoons: Mexico, Belize, Brazil, and Costa Rica • European Honeymoons: Italy, Greece, France, and Spain • South Pacific Honeymoons: Australia & Fiji As you can see, some of the top destinations are in the Caribbean because of its vibrant culture, rich history, unique islands, and warm waters. The islands of the Caribbean have been seducing lovers and travelers for decades. One of the easiest ways to ensure a totally stress-free and sublimely relaxing honeymoon is by staying at a luxurious, all-inclusive resort and spa that best matches your personal wish list. Our suggestion would be to stay
at the Sandals Resorts, primarily because everything is included and unlimited, such as every imaginable land and water sport (including scuba diving for certified divers), and golf in Jamaica The Exumas and Saint Lucia. With Sandals 5-Star Global Gourmet dining, you can take a culinary journey around the world at up to 16 specialty restaurants with cuisine created by master chefs. Up to 11 bars serve premium spirits, with drinks always on the house! Entertainment options range from beach and poolside parties with live Caribbean music, to lively lounges, speakeasies, and clubs. Last, but not least, Sandals has the most unique love nest suites in the Caribbean: over-the-water bungalows, villa SkyPool suites with terrace plunge pools, swim-up suites with lagoon pools, the Millionaire Suites, and “Tranquility Soaking Tubs” for two with spa-style bathrooms and a renowned butler service. The Sandals Caribbean resorts are located in Jamaica, the Bahamas, St. Lucia, Grenada, Antigua, and Barbados. From beach bungalows to mountain cabins, you’re sure to find the perfect way to celebrate your newly wedded bliss. You may want to spend your entire vacation in one beautiful spot, or travel through many lands. Either way, Travel Leaders gives you a taste of the most sought after honeymoon experiences. Just remember, setting off on your honeymoon isn’t just a vacation – it’s the one opportunity that you and your partner have to indulge in love without distractions. Embrace the excitement of your new romance and revel in each moment together on this special getaway!
1. Start Early to Get the Best Prices: Wondering when to book a honeymoon? You can book it up to a year in advance. Be sure to take a look at monthly payment plan options!
Travel Leaders is hosting a Honeymoon Open House and you are invited to come! It will be on Saturday, April 13th at 11:00 am. Please R.S.V.P at 901-377-6600 or 901-853-6200.
6. Set Aside an Appropriate Budget for the Honeymoon: Weddings can get costly quickly and it’s tempting to take it out of the honeymoon budget. But, think about it: The typical wedding ceremony lasts six hours. How long is a honeymoon, on the other hand? Typically, the honeymoon lasts 7 to 14 days. Which one do you think you’ll remember more, unless you decide to also have a Destination Wedding?
Barbara May Owner of Travel Leaders gotravelleaders.com 901.377.6600
2. Work Together: When it comes to wedding planning, dividing and conquering is often the best approach - not when it comes to the honeymoon. If one person handles the planning, you end up with a trip that’s more tailored to his or her desires. 3. Don’t Copy Someone Else’s Honeymoon Itinerary: Wedding planning can be so overwhelming that it’s tempting to simply copy another couple’s honeymoon itinerary. They had a blast, right? Your pals may have loved that no-stress all-inclusive resort, but you might find it hinders your adventurous spirit. It’s okay to solicit advice from likeminded friends and family, but take it with the proverbial grain of salt. This is your big trip; tailor it to you and your fiancé. 4. Don’t Rely Entirely on Web Research: Starting your honeymoon planning with a Google search is perfectly fine, but don’t rely only on search engines. Sometimes reviews can paint a picture that doesn’t match reality. 5. Use a Travel Agent: Travel agents come in handy with insider knowledge on deals and discounts and cultivate personal relationships with hoteliers, which can sometimes mean a room is suddenly available in a booked-solid hotel. They can save you endless research time and offer first-hand destination knowledge.

NEW
V S.
EXISTING
If you are in the market for a home, you have a big decision to make. Do you buy New Construction or an Existing Property? The first thing to remember is that there is no right or wrong answer; it just depends on what works for you. To help you work through the process, here are some things to think about: COST Typically, in Collierville, a new home is going to cost more for the same square footage of an existing property. The median price of an existing home listed for sale in Collierville today is $429,000 vs. $514,500 for a new home. While the initial cost for a new home will be more, an existing home is more likely to have extras, such as a fence, pool, window treatments, etc. already installed. DESIGN A new home is going to offer a more up-to-date floor plan than an existing property will. Open floor plans with a family room opening up to a modern kitchen, one or two bedrooms downstairs, larger closets, and flex spaces are just a few of the features a new home typically has to offer. While an existing home might not have the most up-to-date floor plan, if you
PROPERT Y
have a lower initial cost there might be room to add some sweat equity by doing some updating yourself. MAINTENANCE While the initial cost is going to be higher on the new home, the cost to maintain the home is going to be much lower for the first 8-10 years. After the 10 year mark, things like hot water heaters, appliances, and HVAC systems start needing repairs or replacement. If you start leaning towards an existing property, make sure to look at the ages of all the components of the home, including the roof. These costs can add up very quickly and need to be considered. If you can find an existing home that has been updated, you will be able to limit the risk of repairs right away. ENERGY EFFICIENCY A new home is built to the current codes, which is going to have more energy efficient features, such as Low-E windows, 13 Seer HVAC system, more insulation, and an overall better sealed home. The average utility bill will be lower on a new home than an existing one. It is a good idea to confirm the utility cost when considering an existing property.
CHARACTER If you are looking for that “old world charm with tree lined streets and an established neighborhood, it will take years in a new development. AVAILABILITY With the current low inventory of homes for sale, both new and existing, it can be a challenge to find a home on the market that is exactly what you have envisioned. If you have the time, usually 6-8 months to wait, building a home might be a good option. It would allow you to personalize the home the way you want, but will also require patience. These are just a few things to consider when comparing new and existing properties in your home search. My recommendation would be to find a Realtor you trust and discuss your options.

DO IT 1
BUILDING SHELVES WITH PALLET WOOD WHAT YOU’LL NEED: 1 Pallet #6 x 1 - 5/8” Coarse Thread Screws #8 x 2 - 1/2” Drywall Screws Hammer
2
Hand saw or Sawzall Drill bit Hook (optional) 120 Grit Sandpaper (optional) 1 can of Clear Gloss Polycrylic spray (optional)
STEP 1: DISASSEMBLING THE PALLET By far the quickest way I’ve seen to disassemble a pallet is by using a sawzall to cut through the nails holding it together. However, if you’re like me and don’t have a sawzall, you can use a hammer and a flat pry bar to take the pallet apart - just be careful not to split the boards. I’d suggest wearing gloves to prevent splinters (see photo #1). STEP 2: CUT AND SAND THE BOARDS Now that you have the pieces needed for your shelf, you might want to saw off the ends of the boards to eliminate holes left from the nails. I wanted the pieces to be different sizes, so I wasn’t intentional about how much I sawed off of the ends. After this, I took some sandpaper (120 grit) to each of the boards to rid of any rough edges and to smooth out places that the boards had splintered a little. STEP 3: APPLY PROTECTIVE FINISH I still felt the boards needed a little something extra, as the boards (due to being old) had quite a few imperfections. That said, I used a can of Clear Gloss Polycrylic spray to give the boards a bit of a wet look to them. Follow the directions on the can and your boards will look a notch better in no time. 58
TO U R CO L L I E RV I L L E .CO M
march/april 2 0 1 9
4
3 STEP 4: MARK AND ATTACH BRACES Once the boards are dry from the polycrylic spray, use a pencil to mark where you would like the shelves to be on the pallet wall. After marking, flip the boards over and attach the boards you are using as braces, making sure you attach them on the opposite side of where the shelves will be mounted (see photo #2). The braces are to keep the boards together, but also to give you more wood to drill into for your shelves. Make sure that the screws you use for the braces are not too long, otherwise they will go all the way through to the front of your pallet wall. For this, I used #6 x 1 - 5/8 inch screws. STEP 5: ATTACH SHELVES The only thing left to do is attaching your shelves. You’re likely going to need a drill bit to make room for your screws (the #8 x 2 - 1/2” Drywall Screws). Once you’ve
made room with a drill bit, drive your screws in from the back side of the pallet wall and into the shelves on the other side (see photo #3). I used 3 screws for my long shelf and 2 screws for my shorter shelf. If you wanted floating shelves, your job is done! If you’re looking to hold a little bit of extra weight with your shelves, you’ll want to attach L brackets for reinforcement. I’d suggest using the thicker u-shaped boards (called the “runner” boards) from the pallet to make L brackets. BONUS (OPTIONAL): If you want your wall shelf to look a notch above the rest, find an old hook or buy one for a couple bucks at a local hardware store when you purchase the Polycrylic Spray. Attach the hook to the pallet wall and now you have a place to hang keys, a dog leash, or whatever else your heart desires (see photo #4). By: Austin Essary
