Cherry Cheers Make merry with these festive holiday cocktails.
Sparkling Cherry & Spice 2 ½ oz. Grand Marnier Cherry 2 oz. Chandon Rosé sparkling wine (chilled) ½ tsp. freshly grated ginger ½ oz. fresh lime juice Directions: Muddle the ginger in the bottom of a mixing glass and then add Grand Marnier Cherry, lime juice and ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled flute. Top with chilled Chandon Rosé sparkling wine and stir gently. Garnish with candied ginger on the rim of the flute.

Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a single floating mint leaf.

Exploring Grenache Wines The intriguing Rhone variety gains new fans
Grenache Noir, Gris and Blanc make up three of the 13 grapes allowed in Château Neuf du Pape wines, and are touchstones for wines of France’s southern Rhone region. Today, winemakers in France, Spain and around the world are turning their sights to the low acid, berry fruit-and-spice varietal with the soft palate. Despite a relatively high alcohol content (15% or more), the fruit and herbaceous notes in a well-made Grenache have little difficulty overcoming any “heat,” making it easily drinkable.
LAS ROCAS 2009 GARNACHA (Calatayud), $15 Garnacha Tinta, and perhaps the entire Grenache range of grapes, is thought to have originated in Spain, and the Spanish have found great success growing the thin-skinned grapes in Rioja and Calatayud, a relatively new and “hidden” gem of a DO in north central Spain. The wine, from Bodegas San Alejandro, is plush and silky, despite a 15.2% alcohol content, with notes of blackberry, dark cherry and baking spices, with mild tannins. Grapes are grown on high-altitude rocky slopes from wellaged vines ensuring low yields and careful harvest. Pair with roasted lamb or mushroom risotto.
STEEL PLOW ESTATE VINEYARD GRENACHE 2010 (Sonoma Valley), $35 In 2006, Landmark replanted its “Esprit du Rhone” estate vineyard with Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Viognier, all classic Chateau Neuf du Pape varieties. This 100% Grenache wine features grapes harvested early in the morning (using organic farming methods), and processed cold to retain intensive color and fruit notes. On the nose, the wine expresses ripe black currant, leather and autumnal valley warmth. On the palate, black and purple berry fruits dominate. Vibrant herbaceous undertones (alfalfa, rosemary, cinnamon), bright tannins and medium acids balance the fruit. Try pairing it with roast lamb or charcuterie antipasti.
DOMAINE JONES BLANC 2010 (IGP Côtes Catalanes), $19 Thanks to a strategic partnership between the Languedoc and Roussillon regions of Southern France, both enjoy newfound interest in the area’s wines, and young winemakers like British-born Katie Jones (whose mature, hand-picked vines grow in both regions) are producing outside the box. Jones’ boutique, limited productions wines include Jones Blanc, crafted from 100% Grenache Gris, grown on 80-year-old vines over black slate soils in Maury. On the nose it is intensely aromatic, with notes of pear, cantaloupe and soft herbs. The richly textured palate blends summer white stone fruits, melon alfalfa and rosemary. It’s perfect with soft white cheeses, roast chicken or broiled scallops.
STANDING SUN GRENACHE CAMP FOUR 2010 (Santa Barbara County), $28 Founded in 2007 by former preservation architect John Wright and his wife, actor Laura (who plays Carly on General Hospital), the small, Rhone-influenced winery has expanded successfully in the past few years. “The Grenache is quickly becoming one of our best sellers,” says Wright. “Grenache might become the new Pinot Noir in terms of popularity.” (The winery just launched a unique Grenache Rosé.) The low, rolling Camp Four vineyards on the east side of the Santa Ynez Valley enjoy plenty of heat, resulting in a fruit-driven, low-acid wine with notes of black cherry, black currant and fresh-cut grass, ideal for casual drinking with pizza, burgers or paella.

ovember and December are when Hollywood releases its big guns—movies geared to attract adult audiences and Oscar nominations. In the next few months, moviegoers will be presented with a broad selection of motion pictures that cover a range of genres, contain big-name stars, feature high-concept stories, and combine the latest technology with riveting narratives. However, a blood test made on the night of the accident soon reveals that he had alcohol in his system and questions arise as to who or what was at fault and what actually occurred on that plane. Director Robert Zemeckis has returned to live-action filmmaking after 12 years of working with motion-capture animation in films such as Beowulf and The Polar Express. Shot on a budget of $30 million—fairly modest by today’s standards—Flight co-stars John Goodman as a drug dealer, Melissa Leo as a federal investigator, and Don Cheadle as an attorney. Flight sounds like the kind of movie that could earn Washington, already a two-time Oscar winner, another Academy Award nomination.

lincoln (November 9) Steven Spielberg directs this adaptation of the Doris Kearns Goodwin biography, Team of Rivals, which chronicles the relationship between the 16th President and his cabinet. Screenwriter Tony Kushner has condensed the book down to the final four months of Lincoln’s life. Spielberg focuses on the political machinations that helped win victory for the Union in the Civil War. Daniel Day-Lewis, who has made only five films since 2000, portrays Lincoln. David Strathairn stars as Secretary of State William Seward, Jackie Earl Haley is Confederate Vice President Alexander H. Stephens, Tommy Lee Jones is abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens, Sally Field is a compassionate Mary Todd Lincoln, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt appears as the President’s son, Robert Todd Lincoln. “Lincoln was a monumental president, but we treat him like a man, not a monument,” Spielberg has said, adding that, ultimately, the movie is about the burden of leadership, “about the kind of weight that Lincoln has to bear.”
skyfall (November 9) Daniel Craig takes on his third role as Ian Fleming’s James Bond in this 23rd adventure in the longest-running film franchise of all time. The big-screen series began with Dr. No (1962), starring Sean Connery as 007. Roger Moore, George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan filled the role at various times through the years. In Skyfall, after an operation in Istanbul ends disastrously, Bond is missing and presumed dead and the identities of every active MI6 undercover agent are leaked. Questions are raised over the ability of M (Judi Dench) to run the Secret Service, and she becomes the subject of a government review over her handling of the situation. When MI6 itself is attacked, Bond’s sudden reappearance gives M the pretext she needs to seek out Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem), a dangerous rogue claiming a personal connection to both of them. As he follows a trail from London to the South China Sea, Bond soon finds his loyalty to M challenged over secrets from her past. Director Sam Mendes (Revolutionary Road, The Kite Runner) has never before taken on such a high-profile action film, but has hinted that the movie contains plenty of the kind of action sequences Bond fans have come to expect. Romantic interest is present in the person of French actress Berenice Marlohe, and Naomie Harris plays a new field agent who aspires to become as intuitive and effective as Bond. Continued on pg. 136
Anna Karenina (November 16) This is the third collaboration of Academy Award-nominee Keira Knightley with director Joe Wright, following their box office successes Pride & Prejudice and Atonement. Anna (Ms. Knightley) is an artless wife and mother married to passionless, prudish government official Alexei Karenin (Jude Law), who disapproves both of others’ weaknesses and his own tolerance of them. On a visit to Moscow to smooth over a delicate family matter, Anna meets handsome young army officer Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). They are attracted to each other and Anna finds herself on a treacherous, fateful path. In adapting the massive Leo Tolstoy novel, Wright has set it entirely inside a theater on the grounds that the Russian aristocracy lived very public lives, much like many of today’s pop culture personalities. Though this concept is controversial, it enabled the film to be made at a fraction of what it would otherwise have cost. This stylized treatment of a realistic novel is rich in production design, including lavish costumes, lush scenery, elaborate sets and exquisite cinematography. The theatre stage with its oil lamp footlights serves alternately as a traditional stage and a venue for actual events. Anna Karenina has been filmed many times before, most notably in 1935 with Greta Garbo as Anna and in 1948, starring Vivien Leigh.
Life of Pi (November 21) Eleven years after Tann Martel wrote the story, Ang Lee has adapted the inspirational novel into a feature film. Directors M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie) all tried to tackle the book and gave up. Lee cast newcomer Suraj Sharma as teenage Piscine Molitor Patel, nicknamed Pi, whose wealthy family is emigrating from India to Canada on a freighter that’s also carrying animals from the zoo they owned. When the ship founders in a violent storm, Pi ends up spending over seven months adrift in the Pacific Ocean, sharing a lifeboat with a tiger. The unusual tale is underscored by serious themes, particularly its concept of God apart from religion. Early in the movie, we see Pi experimenting with a number of organized religions as he seeks answers about the Almighty. Shot in 3D, the movie uses a digital tiger for most of the complicated scenes, though a real tiger was also filmed. The seamless blending of the two heightens the believability factor.
Hyde Park on the Hudson (December 7) In June of 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Bill Murray) and his wife, Eleanor (Olivia Williams), host the King and Queen of England (Samuel West, Olivia Colman) for a weekend at the Roosevelts’ home at Hyde Park, the first-ever visit of a reigning English monarch to America. With Britain facing imminent war with Germany, the royal couple is looking to FDR for support. International affairs must be juggled with the complexities of FDR’s domestic life as his wife, mother and mistresses all contribute to an unforgettable weekend. Adapted from a 2009 BBC radio play, the story is told from the perspective of Margaret “Daisy” Stuckley (Laura Linney), FDR’s distant cousin and confidante. Shown away from the spotlight of Washington, Roosevelt, flaws intact, is portrayed through an interesting and revealing glimpse of one of the 20th century’s greatest men.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (December 14) Directed by Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), this is the first of the three films adapting the popular J.R.R. Tolkien novels. Set in Middle Earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, the adventure focuses on Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached by wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Bilbo finds himself joining a company of 13 dwarves led by the warrior Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Their journey will take them into the wild through treacherous lands swarming with giant spiders, shape shifters and sorcerers. Reprising their roles from the Lord of the Rings series are Andy Serkis (Gollum), Hugo Weaving (Elrond) and Cate Blanchett (Galadriel). Jackson has incorporated material from later appendices by Tolkien with a massive $500 million budget, much spent on state-of-the-art special effects and computer-generated imagery. The second part, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, is scheduled for release in July of 2013.
Les Miserables (December 14) This is the musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s epic 19th century novel about Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), whose theft of a loaf of bread condemns him to an unjust prison sentence and a life on the run. Though he becomes the respected mayor of the poor town of Vigau and transforms it into a thriving community, Valjean is hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Russell Crowe). Valjean falls in love with one of Vigau’s most pitiful, poverty-stricken residents, the beautiful Fantine (Anne Hathaway), and devotes himself to her care. After Fantine’s untimely death, Valjean raises her daughter, Cossette (Amanda Seyfried), whom he desperately attempts to shield from the dangers of the world. As she matures, Cossette falls in love with Marius (Eddie Redmayne), a young Parisian revolutionary. Jackman has performed many singing roles before and has scored successes on Broadway. Crowe has had a side career in music for several decades as lead singer of a rock group but has never sung on screen before. Director Tom Hooper had the actors sing live rather than to prerecorded tracks, the usual method of filming songs. He positioned radio microphones on the outside of costumes for optimum sound quality, then had the microphones digitally erased. Singing live allowed the actors to perform more convincingly.
Jack Reacher (December 21) Tom Cruise stars as the title character of the Lee Child bestseller One Shot. In the novel, Reacher is described as 6’5,” far from Cruise’s actual height, and fans of the book were unhappy when the casting was announced. However, Child, who watched Cruise’s audition, liked what he saw and gave a thumb’s up. “Reacher’s size in the books,” commented Child, “is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way.” Reacher is an ex-military cop who drifts around the United States with a hunger for justice. A sniper has just killed five people, and the police have quickly identified and arrested a suspect and built a solid case. The accused claims he’s innocent and asks for Jack Reacher, who sets out to confirm for himself whether the man is guilty. As Reacher follows up on questionable parts of the original investigation, he uncovers some startling information. The movie is filled with action, stunts, car chases and elaborately staged fights. Cruise, 50, performs many of his own stunts and reaffirms himself as a viable action hero. Continued on pg. 138

On The Road (December 21) Jack Kerouac’s On the Road was published in 1957, and was based on the years the author spent traveling the United States in the 1940s with several figures who would go on to fame in their own right, including William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg. Kerouac himself tried to get Marlon Brando interested in doing a movie version back in the 1950s and Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather) has tried several times to get projects off the ground since acquiring the rights in 1979. The plot concerns Kerouac’s alter ego, Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), an aspiring New York writer, and the narcissistic ex-con, Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), who bond instantly upon meeting. Determined not to get locked into a constricted life, the two friends cut their ties and take to the road with Dean’s wife, Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen, Elisabeth Moss, Terrence Howard and Steve Buscemi play supporting roles. The film caused controversy at this year’s Cannes Film Festival because of its frequent nude scenes, many featuring Kristen Stewart (Twilight).

LEXUS GS STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT?
I
n the highly competitive world of midsize luxury sedans, every manufacturer is doing its best to stand out. Ironically, this pursuit sometimes drives automakers to wind up building the same product. Think of it like Apple and Samsung with their respective telephones. Both of them look similar with their big screens and sexy user interface, but ultimately underneath their internals are different. It comes down to a buyer’s subjective needs that determine which phone they will walk out of the store with. So when Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz are building luxury cruisers how does Lexus differentiate its all-new GS sedan in the marketplace? Simple. The brand continues to do what it has always done best and create a refined driving experience. But you wouldn’t know that because with the all-new GS, Lexus is using it as a way to redefine the brand. For those of you not in the loop, Lexus has undergone a paradigm shift in recent years that brings sportier characters to the front lines. With bigger wheels and tires, harder suspensions and a more visceral driving experience, it directly clashes with Lexus’ modus operandi of cushy luxury.

How does it all come together with the Lexus GS F Sport? There’s only one way to find out. The first significant difference with the GS F Sport is its all-new look. Lexus of yore designed its autos in a way that can be best described as soft. Edges typically were rounded off and bodies featured swooping, elegant lines. Now, however, one glance at the GS and it appears as though you were hitting on its significant other at the bar. “You. Outside. Now!” Finally, a Lexus with a bit of spunk and attitude. The F Sport ups the ante too because with its modified grille, large diameter wheels featuring a gunmetal finish, aggressively styled front and rear valence, and rear lip spoiler, it doesn’t look like an aging grandparent’s car. When you put together all of these subtle changes, it creates a much sexier package. Yet that’s only one part to the equation. One of the more problematic areas for Lexus products involved their interiors. Sure, most folks would consider them nice, but in recent years there was a bit too much parts-sharing going on and, frankly, they weren’t much more than dressed-up Toyotas. Lexus had to differentiate its products and make the vehicles
more bespoke and befitting of their price tags. And once you take a good, long look at the all-new GS, it’s clear that Lexus’ designers and engineers spent plenty of time thinking about where to place every piece of trim and took the time to create a space that’s inviting. This is a far cry from the uninspired decor of yesteryear and I’ve noticed that it seems to have hints of a European feel. As a self-described Europhile, this is much appreciated. In the age of growing desktop monitors and widescreen televisions, Lexus made sure to cater to the tech crowd’s movement with its large, 12.3-inch infotainment screen. The massive scale easily trumps its direct competitors but it likely won’t win style points for its user interface; however, it is functional with its crisp display and easy-to-use functionality— something the German manufacturers always stumble with. While the screen is the interior’s centerpiece, there’s plenty of detail elsewhere— from the sculpted seats to aluminum trim bits and leather-trimmed dash. When all is said and done, I can comfortably say that this interior is easily the best one Lexus has crafted so far. It’s that good. This is all well and good, but with Lexus’ newfound desire to entice enthusiasts, there are two important questions on my mind: How does it drive? And, did it lose its high levels of refinement? Armed with a 3.5-liter V6 producing just over 300 horsepower and about 275 lb.-ft. of torque, the GS350 all-wheel drive press vehicle I tested hit 60 mph in a snappy six seconds. OK, so it passes the “fast enough” test. If you were to take the GS on Mahwah’s windy Route 202 with its switchbacks and elevation changes, you would quickly realize that this car also can handle. Between its light, direct steering and adjustable suspension settings— standard on F Sport trimmed vehicles—the GS feels a bit more lithe when compared to the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Considering those two are the favorites in the midsize luxury sedan category, I’d say that’s an
excellent sign. But wait, there’s more. While it can handle some exercise near the Ramapo Mountain Reservation, it can also take a beating in New York’s pothole-infested city streets without its passengers becoming jarred. Considering our F Sport tester was equipped with large, 19-inch wheels that’s not exactly an easy feat. This neatly brings us around to what makes—and made—Lexus so special from its humble beginnings in the early 1990s. Its emphasis on refinement. You notice it right away once you start driving. The GS is an incredibly smooth vehicle in just about all of its actions. The GS’ slick-shifting, six-speed automatic rifles through the gears without any lurching, even when you dial in the most aggressive driving style: “Sport +.” Power delivery from the six-cylinder powerplant is linear while under wide-open throttle. And here’s a detail not many folks will pick up on. Close the windows. Take note when the glass is just about to shut and you’ll notice that the glass slows down before it completely shuts to eliminate that infamous “thwack” power windows make. You see, it’s these little details that really separate the Lexus GS from its direct competition. Execution is critical when you’re paying upwards of $50,000 for a set of wheels. Speaking of the competition, I would have to say that this all-new GS walks away besting the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. While those two makes seem to have difficulty blending the attributes that make a sedan sporty and luxurious, Lexus has finally brought the right mix to the party. There’s only one problem. The Audi A6 exists. That does leave us with good news, though. Now you only have two vehicles to test drive.

Even your lackluster energy towards your home or office could use some loving care. Time is ticking, so start thinking!
Despite your charm, you’ve probably been having your share of frustrating misunderstandings. Now is the time to focus on relationships that have taken a turn for the worse. Off your mood, you’ve been keeping your stress to yourself these days. Others around you have recognized the change. After feeling so challenged and frustrated by your emotions and those of others, you’ll finally be rewarded by attention and recognition coming from seemingly out of the blue. Before the end of the year or just at the start of the new, it’ll be all about prosperity, smiles, and perhaps a reason to pack your bags.

You soon may feel challenged. Keep in mind that not all challenges are bad. It could mean you have decided to run in a 10K or work three jobs. The promotion you wanted may be available sooner than later. Your determined nature could be what creates that energy. Passion and vigor show up in your love life. Hopefully, someone will be feeling “hot” for you by year’s end.
You’re waiting for that windfall just before the year comes to an end. It doesn’t arrive soon, but it should be there before Spring. Keep in mind that windfalls can come in many packages, not always as cash. Expect to plan an excursion or adventure when you least expect it. Family matters will be in the front of your mind. But be careful of what choices you make when moving someone or something to the back.

Circus Reality Shows
ave you ever wondered how television manages to stay on the air? I know this question may puzzle you but it amazes me how few people admit to watching television. Many people seem to feel that such an admission signifies they have an excessive amount of free time or are not sufficiently intellectual. However, whether they admit it or not, you are surrounded by those who watch. I like television, despite the fact that critics would have you believe it is responsible for rising obesity, a rising murder rate and falling religious observances. There is nothing like the escape that you get from a good sitcom, an intriguing crime drama or an exciting sporting event. On any given night, you have your fair share of documentaries, but if that doesn’t float your boat, you can always find a talk show or entertainment show detailing scandals of the rich and famous. During the holiday season, you can find special programming about gifts, good will towards all, and a jolly ole man in the chimney. And, of course, there is the elephant in the TV room: the reality show. We are ready for the reality genre and the holiday season to come together for a new generation of reality shows. Imagine, if you will, a behind-the-scenes look into Santa’s elves, the Real Workers of the Far North. The show—a fastpaced reality show that follows several incredibly busy and ambitious North Pole elves—can highlight the joys and perils of working with what presumably is an incestuous bunch of short freaks.

Watch as they balance envious social calendars, challenging careers and family all in the big hustle and bustle of the North Pole. The vision of Santa and the elves lashing out may be horrible to fans who have fond memories of Peanuts Christmas, but not as horrifying as Linus’ True Hollywood Story where we will learn that his abusive alcoholic father led him to carry around that blanket and his refusal to wash it led to the breakup of his marriage to a French supermodel. Little is beyond the imagination in the world of television that offers vastly different tastes for the viewer. Thus when someone utters, and many often do, that there is only junk on the hundreds of channels, they generally tend to mean that others are watching the trash while their own pursuits are worthwhile. In the beginning, shows like American Idol and Survivor gave an inside look into the reality of competition, but they’ve become merely a precursor into what now is the inside worlds of the truly bizarre. This newer niche of programs is what I call the circus reality shows. Why the circus, you ask? Unfortunately, it is because the early days of the traveling circus consisted primarily of freak shows. People who had the misfortune of some bizarre abnormality were paraded across small American towns where “regular” folks would pay a dime to see someone more outwardly unfortunate than themselves. If you are curious about swamp people, there are a few shows that might satisfy you. Hillbillies, moonshiners and

overweight children with pigs all have their own reality shows. Though you can easily imagine that group being on the same show. If it is desperate parents living vicariously through their small children or mean dance instructors you’re seeking, not to worry; they do occupy the same show. And, yes, there is now a show to peek into the lives of Siamese twins and their challenges. You can argue their story to be inspirational but more than likely the producers just look for the bizarre, not the courageous. They are simply being exploited. But look for the twins to visit England soon so the other one gets to drive for a change. I offer no special insight or suggestion about what to do about these shows. Evidently folks are losing interest in watching drunken idiots on the boardwalk and I suspect the many “housewife” shows will share a similar fate. However, I cannot help but wonder what comes next. The insatiable appetite for the weird, deformed and different has been going on for centuries; TV is merely its newest medium. As the Internet takes over traditional television, and technology makes production easier and less costly, I shudder to think what awaits us. On the one hand, I am confident that good and clever content will always be at the ready. So has television helped the greater good? I’m not sure about the answer to that question, but if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to turn on the TV and escape while you ponder that question. Ronald S.
