Publishers’ Letter

A

s we already begin to second guess or completely ignore the resolutions we made a few mere weeks ago, I wanted to offer you a quick kick in the tushie and a reminder that you have the power to—if nothing else—at least start heading in the direction of your goals and your dreams.

We often look to movie stars and musicians as our aspirational icons, offering us the get-rich-quick dream scenarios we might achieve if only we possessed the same harmonious vocal chords, not to mention enviable “back” views. We turn a blind eye to the ups and downs many of these successful people encountered, and completely forget the millions who wanted to be this year’s Ariana Grande but just fell short. No worries! As I always like to say, “there’s plenty to go around.”

There’s plenty more sitting in the pot for your big payday.

Life has always worked in increments–from early youth to your tumultuous teenage years and finally to becoming an adult. Adulthood, though, is where most people think it stops. “Adulthood” is just one big blob of 40 or 50 years until you’re finally a senior citizen. I’m here to tell you that isn’t true at all.

Take my kids, for example. Both are young adults, figuring things out on their own, discovering that life can be a real buzz kill sometimes. Yet, that’s the incremental stage they are in. For some strange reason, I blame pop culture. My kids and many of their contemporaries sometimes feel as if they’re failures just because they aren’t millionaires yet. I tell them life is a staircase; each step leads somewhere better, but it takes hard work and constant improvement to climb those steps. One day, though, you’ll reach the level to which you aspire. And, yes, the elevator isn’t working and the escalator hasn’t been installed yet.

So when you decide you want to “be skinny” this year, make a more definitive resolution, something that’s attainable, yet leaves room to improve upon next year’s resolution. Regardless of what that Facebook ad says, nobody really loses 50 pounds in two weeks, and you won’t, either.

Some would think that after 14 years of producing BC the Mag we might feel as if we’ve perfected what this publication needs to be. Yet, like you and your goals, we never are quite satisfied. We are always seeking to improve, and to find interesting stories about our area’s great residents and businesses that you might not have heard about yet.

Bergen County is such an amazing place to live. It’s our continuing goal to give you the best opportunity to know everything you can about it.

Fine Chilean Wines The U.S. finally receives grownup wines from Chile.

Chile has been producing wines for hundreds of years. About 20 years ago, however, when Chilean wines made a big push on to U.S. soil, it was via affordable, easy-to-drink table wines meant to attract the casual buyer. Today, we’re finally the beneficiaries of the upper tiers of Chilean winemaking, and boy, it is good. These wines work marvelously with everything from steaks and fish to the hugely popular cuisine of Chile’s northern neighbor, Peru.

Santa Rita Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 (Alto Jahuel, Maipo Valley)

Santa Rita is perhaps the most lauded Chilean winemaker today, with both accessible and luxury labels. Founded in 1880, the winery was one of the first in Chile to systematically plant European grape varieties. Low-yield, 50-year vines that enjoy western Mediterranean temperature shifts in the shadow of the Andes are used in this elegant, full-bodied red wine with lush tannins. This is the sort of wine you go, “oh!” on first sip. A rich bouquet of black currant, ripe berries, vanilla and tobacco complement a concentrated, well-balanced and full-bodied mouth feel. Serve with grilled steaks or stuffed acorn squash and fennel salad. $85

Montes Purple Angel Carmenere 2012 (Marchigue & Apalta, Colchagua Valley)

Marques de Casa Concha Chardonnay 2012 (Llanura de Camarico, Limarí Valley)

“High-quality winemaking must come with a real belief in what you are doing,” says Aurelio Montes, founder and winemaker for the groundbreaking Montes wines. “Chile has incredible winemakers across the country, with a deep fascination in exploring the vast Chilean landscape.”

Most people are more familiar with Chile’s red wines. Concho y Toro’s single-vineyard collection under the Marques label takes things up a notch, thanks to winemaker Marcelo Papa. The grapes are grown in the Limarí Valley of Chile’s resurgent Coquimbo region (of which Papa is an advocate). The cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean and persistent morning fog make this region an ideal area for Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. On the nose, lemon, fig, light oak. On the palate, you’ll experience minerality but it’s surprisingly full-bodied with hints of lemon cream pie and fresh grass.

Pair with Mediterranean bean salad or a baked crab casserole. $22

This appreciation shines through in the 92% Carmenere/8% Petite Verdot blend, which is aged two years in New French oak. Montes ekes out complex black fruit and berry notes, along with hints of toffee and latte from a vegetal grape that’s often tricky to translate to the American palate. Pair with butternut squash velouté soup and quinoa with roasted vegetables. $60

Viña Ventisquero Vertice 2010 (Apalta)

“A good winemaker gets to make something maybe 50 times in his or her life; 50 vintages,” says Felipe Tosso, winemaker for the relatively new (1998) label Ventisquero. The respectably priced, drink-ready wines are complex and engaging. The grapes for Vertice (in partnership with John Duval)—a high-altitude blend of Carmenere (52%) and Syrah (48%)—mature at 1,600 feet above the valley floor on the cool side of the Apalta region.

“It’s quiet,” says Tosso. “You hear the birds singing.” The aromatic, silky wine is not a big, tannic force. Instead it’s elegant, with notes of berry fruit, dry earth, oak and minerals. Pair with grilled beef tenderloin with eggplant and black vinegar. $35

Rockin’ Ramsey

R

amsey is truly one of the many standout towns in Bergen County. It offers great restaurants, hair and nail salons, cafes, tanning salons and a wealth of other extras. There are no meters for street parking, something that’s a huge draw not only for me during my “me” day, but the hordes of other car-driving visitors to this attractive town. Phew! No need to worry about rushing out to feed the meter in the middle of a hair appointment or a leisurely lunch with friends. All I need to do is focus on moi, which is my second favorite thing to do. (Guess what’s first on my list?) Beep; time’s up. My absolutely fave thing to do is write Linda’s List for you, dear reader.

So let’s get started on my “me” day! I cleaned out one of my closets the other day and discovered I owned more than 100 belts! So, you guessed it; my first stop was Barbara Ann’s Consignment Shop (4 E. Main Street), where Barbara, the owner, and her staff treat everyone who walks into the store with a big smile and friendly greeting. I’m a regular there so if they don’t see me for a week, they call to make certain I’m “OK.” You all definitely must go check out the store for marvelous designer bags, shoes and clothing. And please remember to tell them hi from LL. From there, I went across the street to see my paisana Giovanna at her Giovanna’s Cafe (19 E. Main Street). I was feeling like a frittata that day and I knew she always has gluten-free bread and coffee that’s just perfecto. Everything was delicious! You have to try their homemade desserts; they are to die-for.

My BC THE MAG colleague and dear friend Amy, who is a petite little thing, is my dessert tester. When we are together all we seem to do is eat. And, oh, yes, we shop too. (Don’t tell Amy’s hubbie about the latter, though.) Thank goodness you can walk for hours in Ramsey because I really needed to walk this meal off. But it was a Friday and Baked in a Cup (70 E. Main Street) always has gluten-free cupcakes on Fridays.

So, in we went and, of course, Amy couldn’t resist the cupcakes, which meant I also had to have one. Yummy! And what a cute little store! I think I’ll use them when I plan my next party, since the store does offer a wide selection of cupcakes as part of its catering service.

With all this eating, the schedule called for pampering time for A and L. We sauntered over to Lush Beauty & Wellness (7 E. Main Street) for a nice relaxing facial and massage. Ahh, did that feel good! We felt so rejuvenated that I coaxed Amy into getting a spray tan with me. (Just so you know—coaxing Amy is not an easy task; she’s the conservative one. As for me, I’m the party gal.) But in we went to LA Sunset Tan (27 E. Main Street). I had the full body tan while my conservative bud got the face tan. At the end, we both looked and felt fantastic!

Then, believe it or not, Amy wanted to eat again! OK. I was up for it. Since I’m just a tad intimidated by her, I let her pick and she chose Varka Restaurant (30 N. Spruce Street). Trying to be good after all of our earlier sweet indulgences, I opted for a salad with grilled shrimp. Besides, I wanted to make sure to leave enough room to take one or two or three of the complimentary Greek cookies they have for you to try on your way out the door. No surprise: I left feeling full, but truly satisfied. (Did I mention that I really like this town?)

owner, is one of the nicest, sweetest, most philanthropic women I have ever had the pleasure to work with on many fundraisers. If you go into any one of her many offices, her colleagues and associates are just as nice and helpful.

For instance, you can’t help but adore the stunningly beautiful Diana Frankel.

She’s not only a friend of mine, but also one of Terrie O’Connor’s crème de la crème realtors.

Speaking of friends, Amy had to leave to go home to her family. I missed her but wasn’t quite ready to call it a day myself. So I made a solo trek to Brady’s At the Station (5 W. Main Street), a nice Irish pub that has been a staple in Ramsey for 10 plus years. With my iPad and my lite beer both in hand, I began recalling my terrific day and writing it all down for this column.

But wait…. I wasn’t finished exploring (and eating and drinking my way through Ramsey) just quite yet.

Next stops: Local Seasonal Kitchen (41 W. Main Street) and Starbucks (8 W. Main Street). I’ve heard loads of positive feedback on the food and the service at the former. (Take a look at this farm-to-table eatery’s website because you never know what its healthy menu offerings will be as they’re determined by calendar, local farmers and seasonal ingredients.) As to the latter, it’s one of my favorite go-to places for a beverage.

On this occasion, I picked up a chamomile tea. Its soothing warmth consoled me as I drove down Main Street and noticed all of the places I didn’t get a chance to stop at this time around. But don’t worry; I’ll be back! Ramsey, you rock. Ciao for now!

Although Bernie Mev has experienced some changes over the years, the footwear brand traces its history back several decades. Launched in the late 1960s, the original Bernie Mev originated in a Bronx factory that made leather shoes.

In 2000, the brand’s founder, Bernie Mev, partnered with Itamar Carmi and they continued Bernie Mev’s journey together.

Itamar, who at the time owned four Medici stores in Manhattan, had plenty of industry expertise to bring to the partnership.

Thanks to years of experience importing shoes from Italy, a fashion metropolis, he provided numerous connections and a keen understanding of the shoe business.

From 2000 onward, the company focused on fashioning a variety of leather shoes. However, 2007 marked a turning point for Bernie Mev. After decades of fostering the brand’s growth, Bernie decided to retire and Itamar purchased the company.

In 2008, Itamar transformed the Bernie Mev brand when he pioneered the use of handmade woven elastics in the construction of shoes. New to the footwear category, this novel concept grew into the company’s signature, propelling the collection to the success Bernie Mev enjoys today.

Currently sold in Englewood, the Bernie Mev brand is also available at 1,400 boutiques nationwide. It has distribution via Nordstrom, and sells globally in locations across Canada, England, Italy, France, Germany, the Middle East and beyond. Online it is sold through Zappos and other online retailers.

From metallic wovens to denim and custom prints, Bernie Mev has built an ex-

tensive collection of shoes around its core concept. Each stylish shoe is available in 12 different color combinations and patterns. Every single pair is crafted using handmade elastic woven uppers, which hug the feet while providing comfort and breathability. All feature memory foam and an ultra-light sole.

“The brand emerged from the need for women to look great and feel comfortable. Women grew tired of suffering from wearing fashionable shoes. It’s a great fashion look, but it really is a comfort shoe,” says Rachel Carmi, co-owner and designer at Bernie Mev, which also boasts affordably priced offerings between $50 and $80.

“We built the collection around that success,” reveals Rachel. “We took that comfort and brought it into other categories.” The brand is re-launching some of its collections. In Winter 2014, Bernie

Mev unveiled a collection of high heels for ladies who yearn to make a fashion statement without the pain and discomfort. The result: stylish 4-inch heels with memory foam for a liberating sense of ease. Beyond the women’s wear, Bernie Mev launched a collection for men, which utilized the same concept found in the women’s line.

With the women’s and men’s collection selling successfully and helping to further build brand recognition, Bernie Mev unveiled a line of athletics last year. Tagged as “Mev on the Move,” this new athletics line—ranging from workout sneakers to styles that are ideal for Pilates and yoga— features smart details such as reflective wovens for those who run after dark.

With those core collections underway, Bernie Mev felt empowered to expand into other categories. The company launched a bridal collection in Spring

2014 and a cute collection for kids at Nordstrom in Fall 2014.

Nidia Alexander of Cafe Barcel in Nyack, New York, decided to make some changes this summer—introducing Social 162, a new restaurant with a more casual feel, revamped American small plates menu with cocktails, craft beer and wine.

The restaurant footprint is the same, though the space has been renovated with new wood walls and artwork, extended bar (doubled in size), a few high tops and four TVs for sports.

Chef Steve Permaul (David Burke) is still in the kitchen, rolling out a menu of shareable plates and salads, with a few entrées as well. House-made meatballs and the Hickory Smoked BBQ Pulled Pork Toast are just a small taste of the many offerings.

The bar is offering five draught beers and another eight to ten in the bottle. The bar manager has created several signature cocktails, using many craft spirits and fresh juices. And there’s “Social Hour” for those who are spending time at the bar, which is the Social 162 version of happy hour.

Social 162 is open six days (closed Tuesdays) with lunch service on the weekends. Friday and Saturday nights will see the kitchen open till midnight and the bar till 2am, with other nights changing, depending on sporting events and music plans.

Tucked along Old River Road, though directly across the street from many high-profile Edgewater retail destinations (City Place, Edgewater Plaza), Porto

by Antonio is the brainchild of owner Antonio Dinis.

Dinis, a well-seasoned chef who has traveled throughout Italy and NYC honing his pizza-making skills, has chosen North Bergen as the mecca for his culinary creations. The wood oven pies are cooked at 900 degrees in an imported oven from Naples. Although the menu is pretty straightforward, there are some standouts, such as the lightly fried Montarana pizza and the twicebaked Pizza Al Taglio, both of which were all the rage in NYC a few years back.

The menu covers a wide range of traditional pizzas, pastas, paninis and salads, not to mention Nutella pizza and fried Oreos for dessert. The restaurant is open seven days a week for both lunch and dinner.

Replacing Valentino, Brasserie Brandman hopes to bring an “unpretentious dining experience that serves great drinks and hearty meals” to Park Ridge.

Owner Stephen Brandman is working closely with executive chef Julie Farias, who has worked in notable kitchens such as Daniel, Café Boulud and Le Bernardin. Together the pair is crafting a menu that curates popular dishes selected from eateries around NYC and Bergen County while also incorporating Brandman’s own 30+ years’ worth of experience in the hospitality industry.

Menu items will range from house-made hot biscuits and blueberry pie in the style of Lundy’s in Sheepshead Bay to Peter Luger-style grilled dry-aged porterhouse steaks. In a nod to Brandman’s trips to Peter Luger’s with his father, they’ll also be offering slab bacon, cooked in special ovens where temperatures reach 900 degrees. Chocolate spare ribs round out the delicious offerings. And thanks in part to the fact that Brandman’s wife and daughters are vegetarians, vegetarian dishes will also be on the menu.

Housed in a fully renovated 100-year-old building, Brasserie Brandman has a full liquor license, and is open Tuesday through Saturday.

201-444-4001 // picniconthesquare.com Word got out late last year that Grange (Westwood) executive chef Christine Nunn was bringing her former Fair Lawn restaurant Picnic to Ridgewood as the newly named Picnic on the Square. Nunn, who will be splitting her time doing executive chef duties at both Picnic and Grange, is looking forward to bringing back some beloved Fair Lawn classics at the new 30-seat BYO eatery.

Tuesdays through Thursdays, diners will have the option of a two-course prix fixe ($40) or a three-course prix fixe ($50) in addition to à la carte options.

Nunn has brought back the entire Fair Lawn team—head waitress, host and sous chef. But the “family living room” look from the Fair Lawn location has been updated in an urban and hip industrial style at the Ridgewood venue, which Nunn feels is more in keeping with its location in the “Brooklyn” section of Ridgewood (west of the train tracks).

Simply listed as “Beginnings,” Picnic on the Square’s appetizers range from a classic wedge salad to items such as slow-roasted marrowbones and seared foie gras crispy pork belly. The “Middles” include a beautiful duet of lamb, venison schnitzel and roasted Goffle Farm chicken roulade. Desserts will be a surprise; Nunn is keeping the Picnic tradition of having the wait staff give verbal descriptions of the dessert offerings, so they’ll likely change weekly.

Celebrity chef Anton Testino has taken the wraps off of his new restaurant Mulberry Street Cafe, an eatery aimed squarely at competing with the national sandwich chains. Most are probably familiar with Testino’s time on television on Food Network’s Chopped and Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen.

The restaurant is more than just a simple sandwich shop; it is a nostalgic “Depression era” Italian delicatessen and dessert franchise, serving semolina sandwiches, soups, salads and risotto. The offerings are available à la carte (full-sized) or you may pick any two “combo-sized” sandwiches, salads, soups or risottos.

The servers all wear uniforms, including cute bow ties and soda jerk caps; the tables are covered in red-and-white checkered tablecloths, giving the concept a 1930s feel. This is the first of five New Jersey locations, though the other spots have not yet been announced. Mulberry Street Cafe is open seven days a week for lunch and early dinner.

Located in the space formerly inhabited by Vespas and Anthony’s Italian Bistro, the eatery offers a menu very similar to the one in Jersey City. This includes the pancakes, which were featured on NBC and Diners, Drive-ins and Dives (as well as in Guy Fieri’s book).

Bournias’ wife, Vanessa DeLeon, is adding some natural and organic choices, like fresh cold-pressed juices and “green” bowls. She’s also designed the entire space, as she’s been on a variety of TV shows, including Food Network’s Restaurant: Impossible and NBC’s American Dream Builders.

Bournias and DeLeon chose Edgewater because they reside in town and feel there is no “casual and cool” breakfast/lunch spot around. The 150-seat restaurant, which is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, is sure to fill the void with lots of delicious options.

Think before you take a leap even though your impetuous nature will want to go for it. Making hurried decisions may create an avalanche of problems. Proceed with caution so the new beginnings around you are the ones you are ready for.
