Utopian Days - Freedom

유토피아의 날들 - 자유 <유토피아의 날들 - 자유>는 국제적으로 활동하고 있는 스물 네명의

장면에서 그들의 표현과 자유를 느낄 수 있다. 리다 압둘의 작업은

작가들로 구성된 비디오 아트 페스티벌이다. 2014년 3월 20일부터

아프가니스탄의 아이들이 처한 전쟁이라는 가혹한 현실 안에서

4월 13일까지 진행된 이번 페스티벌에서는 전시를 비롯하여 다양한

아이들 스스로 해결책을 만들어냄으로써, 비극적인 상황을 극복하여

토크 및 워크숍 프로그램을 통해 페스티벌의 주제인 ‘자유’에 대한

더 나은 미래를 갖고자 하는 염원을 담고 있다. 1년간 매일 1시간마다

예술적 고민과 성찰을 펼쳐보이고자 하였다.

24번 타임카드를 찍는 일을 수행한 데칭셰의 <1년 퍼포먼스>에서 작가는 그 무엇에도 얽매이지 않고 스스로 만든 규칙안에서 작업을

전시 주제의 두 축을 이루는 ‘자유’와 ‘유토피아’ 개념은 밀접하게

실행했으며, 이를 성공적으로 기록하였다. 이는 속박을 통해 비로소

맞닿아 있는 개념이지만, 기실 치열한 분투를 통해 각각 의미의 연대,

자유를 이야기하는 작가만의 고유한 표현 방법을 보여준다. 같은

역사화에 성공하였다. 근대에 ‘발명’된 개념이라 할 수 있는 '자유'는

맥락으로, 아델 압데세메드가 바다 위에서 보여주는 행동은 이 사회

보편적으로 주어진 자연적 개념이 아닌 열락의 세계, 즉 유토피아를

안에서의 작가의 역할과 생존의 문제에 대한 질문을 은유적으로

구성하기 위해 끊임없이 재조정되고 타협되어야 할 유동적

던지고 있다.

조건이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 더불어 살아가는 동시대 삶의 맥락 속에서 ‘자유’에 대하여 명확하게 서술하기란 생각만큼 쉽지 않다.

이처럼 <유토피아의 날들>은 유토피아를 반영하는 새로운 개념 중

대신, 각자가 처한 상황 속에서 저마다의 다채로운 언어로 ‘자유’에

하나로 <자유>에 접근하였다. 사례를 나누고 고정관념을 구축하는

대한 해석과 관점을 풀어낼 수는 있을 것이다.

필터를 제거하는 대신에 지역 또는 국제적, 개인 또는 집단의 투쟁 같은 각각의 상황에서 존재하는 자유에 대해 논하였다. 유토피아란

이번 페스티벌에서는 한국을 포함한 19개국 작가들의 비디오 작업을

현실에서는 이루어질 수 없는 이상적인 그 어떤 곳을 의미하는 허구의

통해 서로 다른 역사와 문화, 언어 그리고 사고방식에서 비롯된,

세상이다. 1516년 영국의 인문학자 토마스 무어 Thomas More는

‘자유’에 대한 다층적 해석과 논의의 장을 마련하였다. 24편의

현실의 질서를 비판하고, 개혁을 주장하면서 이상의 세상을 ‘유토피아

비디오 작업에 등장하는 인물들의 액션과 시나리오들은 스스로의

Utopia’라고 칭했다. 현실과는 거리가 먼 도달할 수 없는 이상세계인

자의식을 강화하고, 고유한 욕망을 표현하면서 자유를 찾아가는

유토피아에 대한 상상은 우리가 살고 현실을 돌아보게 하고, 다가오는

경험을 명확하게 전달하고 있다. 이와 동시에, 자유로운 상태에

우리가 살아갈 미래의 모습을 그려볼 수 있게 한다. 그리고 그런 상상

도달하기 위해 각자가 가진 상이하고 독특한 가능성을 실행함으로써

속에서 우리는 현대사회가 가지고 있는 많은 문제들과 이슈들에

오늘날 세계에서 ‘자유’라는 단어가 함의하는 바가 무엇인지에

비판적이고 적극적인 입장을 취하게 한다. 때문에 유토피아에 대한

활동하는 관계자들의 특별강연과 워크숍 등의 프로그램을 통해서

언어 능력을 압도하는지를 보여주며, 가시적인 비주얼은 때때로

몇 작가의 작업을 예로 들면, 길거리에서 음식과 쉴 곳을 찾아

심도있는 해석을 공유할 수 있을 것이다. 이처럼 지속적으로 쌓이는

배회하는 노숙자들이 돈을 구걸하면서 사용하는 200여장의 표지판을

결과는 성장하는 아카이브로서 제공되어 페스티벌의 에피소드를

모아 보여주는 안드레 세라노의 작품에서 자유란 매일 밥을 먹을 수

The Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, is pleased to present Utopian Days – Freedom, a video art festival, introducing works from 24 internationally renowned artists and collectives. From March 20th to April 13th, 2014, artists, critics and academics will explore the theme of Freedom through an exhibition, talks, workshops and screenings.

All actions and scenarios from the videos deliver an outspoken experience of art, to enhance an awareness of self, and express a unique desire and search for freedom; taking on a number of different, unique possibilities of implementing it. Looking at the different ways of interpreting our freedom today, it goes on to analyse the ideological implications of the creation of freedom with regard to religious and cultural identity and the legitimation of power, as well as how the representation of the concept reflects the power structures of contemporary societies. Before the language appears, the thoughts are developed within multiple locations of the body. Creating stops, slips, fractures; these emotions seek to organize themselves to become language. It may as well be releasing expression of lies and misuse of which cannot be heard. These places of tension, where chaos seeks an order can be found in the actions, performance, and scenarios created by the artists in the exhibition. Through this performativity, the videos demonstrate how the speech is surpassed by the images.

The visual speaks of what is difficult and what often remains unsaid.

For some, freedom might be as in the works of Andres Serrano, exiting a precarious life or being able to take a daily meal, becoming part of society again. Others like Zhang Huan, are looking for freedom in the nonsense of their actions. Some artists use violence, in a military-like way, to feel and express their freedom, as in the battle recorded by Cyprien Gaillard. For Lida Adbul, the capacity of resilience, as it to say, the survival capacity and forgiveness the children show in her movie, appeals for better days. By repeating the exact same action every hour, Tehching Hsieh shows an obvious alienation and loss of freedom in our contemporary time, but paradoxically through this breaking through dedication to his work in the One Year Performance, he also found a way to express himself as an artist. The same idea can be seen in Adel Abdessemed’s action on the sea, where he metaphorically questions the status of art and the artists within the society.

The 24 works of the festival, each created in a specific historical, social and cultural context, and exhibited under one roof expose the viewer to the representation they convey and the striving for independence and freedom they appeal.

Utopian Days approaches freedom as one of the concepts attached to utopian reflections in a new way. By removing filters that divide practices and build stereotypes, the exhibition set the goal to show that in each living situation, a quest for freedom exist may be situated in local, regional or

global, individual or collective struggles.

Utopia, in the common language, is a fictional construction whose realization is beyond reach. The Humanist, Thomas More coined this term in 1516 to envision an ideal society, while critiquing the existing order and calling upon reforms.

The distance from reality, created through fictions like More’s Utopia, allows for a reflexive perspective and describes possible future ways of living together. In doing this, it encourages and inspires to take on a critical and active position regarding contemporary social and cultural issues.

Utopian Days hopes to engage with a broad audience, including people from both inside and outside of the art world. The festival provides an interdisciplinary perspective, unifying sciences, criticism and fiction, and proposes a vision that goes beyond the boundaries of our contemporary conception of visual culture.

Freedom is the first edition of a traveling festival called Utopian Days; each subsequent edition is intended to be held in collaboration with another institution, focusing on a different theme. Its aim is to introduce and share new perspectives on social and cultural issues through artistic practices, talks and workshop. This collaborative work will also allow a more local and direct impact among the visitors the museum reaches within an exhibition showing artists internationally renowned. Utopian Days offers daily guided tours, talks, and workshops, and in addition, live streams, a video archive, a catalogue and more. It aspires to foster an exchange of ideas, both in- and outside of Korea. Also the dedicated bilingual website provides visitors more information, with the QR codes and they can share their experiences and interpretations of the works on social network streams through #utopiandays. Long-lasting results will be obtained in recurring episodes of the festival, feeding into a growing archive.

이반 아르고떼, 콜롬비아

이반 아르고떼(1983)는 보고타의 콜롬비아 대학교에서 디자인과 뉴미디어를 공부했고, 파리의 국립고등미술학교에서 순수회화를 전공했다. 퍼포먼스, 비디오, 사진, 조각 그리고 회화 등 다양한 매체를 다루며 전방위적으로 활동하고 있다. 작가 스스로 “내 작품은 우리가 어떻게 행동하고, 우리 앞에 있는 환경을 이해하며 그것이 어떻게 역사와 전통, 예술, 정치, 그리고 권력에 닿아 있는지를 드러낸다”고 말한다. 이반 아르고떼는 2013 아우디 현대미술 및 디자인 탤런트 어워드Audi Talents Awards Contemporary art and Design 2013 수상자이며 최근 로스엔젤레스 18번가 예술 센터18th Street Art Center, 파리 팔레 드 도쿄Palais de Tokyo 그리고 제30회 브라질 상파울루 비엔날레 등을 비롯한 다수의 전시에 참여한 바 있다.

Iván Argote, Colombia

Born in 1983, Iván Argote studied design and new media at the National University of Colombia in Bogota, and fine arts at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He works with different media: performance, video, photos, sculptures; paintings often share a rebellion and reflection on the look we traditionally ask about art humour.

Paintings often share a rebellious reflection on the way we look at art, combined with a black humour’s ounce. The artist himself speaks thus: My work reflects how we behave, how we understand our immediate environment, and how it is connected with the history, traditions, art, politics and power. But as I don’t take myself seriously when I create, I am perfectly free to work in different ways, which is also a reflection on the work of the artist. Iván Argote was the winner of Audi Talents Awards Contemporary Art and Design 2013.

Recent exhibitions include: 18th Street Arts Center, Los Angeles, Palais de Tokyo, Paris Festival de Inverno de São João del Rei, Red, Paris, France, 30th Sao Paulo Biennial, Brazil.

<느낌>, 2009

<느낌>은 작가가 즐겨 인용하는 절대주의 선언문에서 영감을 받았다. “나는 절대주의를 창의적인 예술에서 나타나는 순수한 감정의 절정(우월함)이라고 이해했다. 절대주의자들에게 객관적 세계의 시각적 현상은 그 자체로는 의미가 없다. 중요한 것은 감정, 그리고 세상으로부터 멀리 떨어져 있는 것이다. 이른바 의식에 있어서 감정의 ‘물질화’란 어떤 실제적 개념이라는 매체를 통해 나타나는 감정의 반영을 물질화하는 것을 의미한다. 그런 실제적 개념은 절대주의 예술에서는 가치가 없다… 그리고 비단 절대주의 예술에서뿐 아니라 일반적 예술 자체에서도 별 가치가 없는데 왜냐하면 (어떤 화풍에 속하든) 예술 작품의 지속되는 진정한 가치는 오직 표출된 감정 안에서만 존재하기 때문이다”라고 작가는 말한다. 아르고떼는 파리에 있는 국립현대미술관에 라디오를 들고 들어가 말레비치의 작품 <검은 십자가Black Cross>라는 그림 앞에 가서 선다. 그리고 라디오 주파수를 맞춰가며 자신의 느낌을 표현할 수 있는 댄스 음악을 찾은 다음 작품 앞에서 춤을 춘다. 그는 이 작품을 새로운 강연 프로젝트, 텍스트의 제정이라고 생각했다.

<바르셀로나>, 2014

이 비디오 작품은 바르셀로나의 크리스토프 콜롬브 로터리 항구 근처에서 촬영되었다. 한밤중에 아르고떼는 주교가 원주민들에게 올바른 길을 보여주는 장면을 묘사하는 조각상에 압셍트를 사용해 불을 질렀다. 아르고떼는 바르셀로나의 다른 역사적 기념비에 비해 그다지 눈에 띄지 않고, 알려지지도 않은 3미터 높이의 이 조각상을 찾아내 식민지화에 대한 유럽인의 시각에 동의하지 않음을 표현하는 강력한 상징적 행동을 보여주었다.

Retouch, 2008 During his studies in Columbia, he was impressed by the fascination and aura that some artworks from art history possess. While he was still an art student in Paris, he covered two of Mondrian’s paintings from the Centre Pompidou in graffiti with a Dada-like gesture. With this laughable action on the paintings under glass, he highlights or confronts himself to this fascination, questioning the accuracy of what is suppose to be vouch.

Feeling, 2009 Feeling was inspired by the Suprematism manifest, which Argote likes to quote the beginning of: Under Suprematism I understand the supremacy of pure feeling in creative art.

To the Suprematist the visual phenomena of the objective world are, in themselves, meaningless; the significant thing is feeling, as such, quite apart from the environment in which it is called forth. The so-called ‘materialization’ of a feeling in the conscious mind really means a materialization of the reflection of that feeling through the medium of some realistic conception. Such a realistic conception is without value in Suprematist art… And not only in Suprematist art but also in art generally, because the enduring, true value of a work of art (to whatever school it may belong) resides solely in the feeling expressed. He went with a radio and stood in front of Malevich’s painting, Black Cross. He looked for a dance song on the radio that expressed how he felt and then danced along in front of the canvas. He conceived this project as a new lecture, a enactment of the text.

Barcelona, 2014 The video was shot in Barcelona, near the Christophe Columbus roundabout by the port. At night, Ivan Argote used absinthe to literally set the statue on fire that depicts a bishop show the right path to an indigenous man. This threemeter height statue is relatively unseen and anonymous in comparison to other historical monuments in Barcelona, yet Argote found it and created a strongly symbolic action that expresses the artist’s disagreement with the European vision of colonization.

<당신은 그것을 비극이라고 부를지도 모른다. 하지만 나에게 있어 침묵이다>는 5분 분량의 비디오 작품으로 멀티 채널이나 싱글 채널로 상영된다. 도시 풍경에 대한 조사를 마치고 난 다음, 필리포 미넬리는 이탈리아, 스페인, 폴란드와 독일에서 빈 광고판을 사진과 영상으로 기록했다. 빈 광고판의 시각적인 ‘텅 빔’은 도시에서 침묵의 물리적인 시각화로 간주된다. 광고판의 침묵은 또한 2008년 국제금융 위기 이후 트라우마적 쇼크를 겪은 사람들이 침묵하고 얼어붙은 순간으로 이해할 수도 있다. 비디오 작품은 광고판 앞에서 춤추는 배우를 보여주는데 이는 국제금융위기를 바라보는 작가 세대에 대한 반항적인 태도를 재현하는 것이며, 나아가 관객으로 하여금 이 사태를 바라보는 방식과 관점을 확장시킬 수 있도록 한다.

Filippo Minelli, Italy Filippo Minelli, born in 1983, is a contemporary artist researching and analysing social issues in fields like architecture, politics, communication and geography, using them as base for the creation of site-specific interventions or artworks. His artistic path based on the use of language led him to investigate the importance of both the word in contemporaneity and silence, which can be seen as the opposite and completing part of the uttered word in language, visualized through photography in the public performances of his Shapes and Lines series. Traces of his presence can be found a diverse range of locations, from the Italian countryside to the biggest European cities in South East Asia, from Mongolian steppe to African deserts passing by the separation-barrier between Palestine and Israel. His artworks are frequently featured in books and his series has been reviewed by international magazines and newspapers as well as exhibited in various museums and foundations in Italy and abroad.

You might call it crisis but it’s silence to me, 2012 You might call it crisis but it’s silence to me is a 5 minutes video presented in both multichannel-screening or singlescreen. After a research on urban landscape, seeking for modified urban furniture, Filippo Minelli started to document with photographs and videos empty billboards in Italy, Spain, Poland and Germany. Their visual voids were considered as the physical visualization of silence in cities. Their muteness were also assimilated to the moment where people are silent and frozen after a traumatic shock, in this case after the 2008 international financial crisis. The video shows an actor dancing in front of billboards, acting and representing the attitude and defiance answer from the artist’s generation toward this event, enjoining the public to broaden their perspectives and the way they look at events.

아르만도 루라제, 알바니아

알바니아에서 태어난 아르만도 루라제(1980)는 위험 지역에 대한 글과 희곡을 쓰는 작가이자 영화 제작자이며 분쟁 이미지를 만들어내는 프로듀서이다. 그의 작품들은 지역의 맥락에 한정되어 있지 않으며 오히려 글로벌 체제의 맥락에서 벌어지는 경제 권력 및 허구적 민주주의와 사회적 불일치 사이의 경계를 강조하고자 한다. 프라하 비엔날레(2003, 2007)를 비롯해 티라나 비엔날레(2005), 제52회 베니스 비엔날레, 제4회 구텐베르그 비엔날레(2007), 제6회 베를린 비엔날레(2010) 등에서 전시했다. 최근 프로젝트인 <NEVER>는 제63회 베를린 국제영화제의 포럼 익스펜디드Forum Expanded 섹션에 출품되었다.

<엔버/네버>, 2012

최근까지도 사람들은 알바니아의 도시 베라트Berat 근처에 있는 기념비에 새겨진 비명의 흔적을 알아볼 수 있었다. 1960년대에 권력을 휘둘렀던 독재자가 자신의 이름 “ENVER”를 새겨 주변 산에 설치하는 작업을 후원했다. 각 글자의 높이가 150미터나 되는 이 거대한 비명은 그의 정권이 끝난 후에도 남겨져 있었다. 1990년 거의 유령처럼 되어버린 이 비명을 철거하려던 노력이 다시 무위로 돌아간 이후 마침내 아르망 루라제의 <네버> 프로젝트가 생겨났다.

Armando Lulaj , Albania Armando Lulaj, born in 1980 in Albania, is a writer of plays, texts on risk territory, film author, and producer of conflict images. He has no desire to subject to the context of local belonging—rather, he is orientated toward accentuating the border between economical power, fictional democracy and social disparity in a global context. Exhibitions include the Prague Biennial (2003; 2007), Tirana Biennial (2005), the Albanian Pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennial (2007), 4th Gothenburg Biennale (2007), and the 6th Berlin Biennial (2010). His recent project NEVER was featured at the 63rd Berlinale International Film Festival in the section Forum Expanded.

Enver / Never, 2012 Until recently, one could still perceive the traces of a monumental inscription nearby the Albanian city of Berat: in the 1960s, the former dictator had commissioned the sketching of his first name, Enver, onto the surrounding mountains. With each letter measuring 150m in height, the gigantic ENVER remained visible even long after the end of the regime. After a failed attempt in the 1990s to eradicate the then nearly haunted inscription, the letters persisted – eventually giving rise to the project NEVER by Armando Lulaj. In the summer of 2012, Lulaj succeeded to re-write the dictator’s former commission, however implementing a distinct alteration: ENVER became NEVER. In his documentary film of the same title, Lulaj offers a closer glimpse at his laborious re-dedication and the process of (un-) naming the recent past whilst in a sense re-enacting the historical incident. The NEVER-Chart, a diagram the artist developed to accompany the film, suggests further possible layers of meaning and intertwining discourses that encompass the work. How corruption relates to déjà-vu photography, courage to cannibalism, or land art to Lacan, are only some of the aspects, which will form the basis of a comprehensive publication currently in development at the Jan Van Eyck Akademie.

<양어장의 수위 높이기>, 1997

장환은 최근 중국 곳곳에서 베이징으로 일하기 위해 이주해온 40여 명의 참가자를 모았다. 그들은 공사장 인부, 어부 그리고 육체 노동자들이었고 모두 사회의 빈민층이었다. 그들은 양어장 주변에 둥그렇게 둘러 서 있고, 장환이 먼저 양어장 안으로 걸어 들어간다. 처음에는 양어장 가운데 일렬로 서 있다가 서서히 자유롭게 움직인다. 계획한 일정 지점까지 수면이 올라가면 양어장 가운데 멈춰 서 있다가 퍼포먼스가 끝난다. 이 작품은 일종의 물에 대한 이해와 설명을 언급하고 있지만, 동시에 수면을 1미터 높이는 행위가 쓸모 없음을 이야기하고 있기도 하다.

Zhang Huan, China Zhang Huan, born in 1965, began his work as part of a small artistic community, known as the Beijing East Village, located on the margins of the city. The group of friends from art school pioneered this particular brand of performance in China and officials perceived his actions as inappropriate and often reprimanded Zhang. His performances always involve his body in one way or another, usually naked and using simple repetitive gestures, regarded as meaningless work-for-work’s-sake chores, and occasionally involving masochistic actions. one of his photographs showed him naked, with a halfshaved head, sitting in a prison like space, with the skin.

The skin wet and covered by flies. Although his face looked blank, he remains immobile and reaches a meditative level, where the pain is thrown away. By this religious ritual, inherited from Buddhism, he seeks to discover the moment where the spiritual can manifest via the corporeal. In the nearly 40 performance arts that Zhang Huan performed, he addressed a variety of issues such as the power of unified action to challenge oppressive political regimes; the status and plight of the expatriate in the new global culture; the persistence of structures of faith in communities undermined by violent conflict; and the place of censorship in contemporary democracy.

To Raise the Water Level in a Fishpond, 1997 Zhang Huan invited about forty participants, all recent migrants to the city who had come to work in Beijing from other parts of China. They were construction workers, fishermen and labourers, all from the bottom of society. They stood around in the pond and then Huan walked in it. At first, they all stood in a line in the middle to separate the pond into two parts. Then they walked freely, until the point of the performance arrived, which was to raise the water level. Then they stood still. In the Chinese tradition, fish is the symbol of sex while water is the source of life. This work expresses, in fact, one kind of understanding and explanation of water but also that the water in the pond that was raised by one meter higher is an action of no avail.

함양아(1968)는 서울대학교에서 회화, 동대학원에서 미술이론을 공부한 후 뉴욕대학원에서 미디어아트를 전공했다. 이후 서울, 뉴욕, 암스테르담, 이스탄불 등을 오가며 영상뿐 아니라 조각, 설치, 오브제 등 다양한 매체를 실험적으로 설치하는 작업을 지속해오고 있다. 미디어아티스트로서 함양아는 인간의 삶을 기저로 한 우리 사회의 단면들을 은유적으로 서술하는 방식을 통해 작가만의 독특한 내러티브를 작품에 담아낸다.

Yang Ah Ham, South Korea Yang Ah Ham was born in 1968 in Seoul, Korea. After studies in Seoul, she moved to New York, where she received an M.A. from New York University in 1997. In her videos, she creates, with different materials such as videos and photos, fictions that metaphorically narrate and depict a certain aspect and face of our society. Themes like passing time and cycles are central subjects for her movies and her investigations. The boundaries between fiction and truth are blurred to construct a distance to reality that speaks or points out to difficult subject, even taboo. Ham has also begun focusing on the human’s nightly dreaming, as another natural cycle of the nature. Her video function like a mirror in which we can observe our society, the work parodies contemporary life like a theatre of the absurd. Her video work has been included in exhibitions throughout Korea and abroad, including National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul (2011), Gwangju Biennale (2010), Busan Biennale (2006), and the Asian American Art Center, New York. In 2013 Ham was appointed Artist of the year by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul).

예고한다. 2008년 53세의 관광객 박왕자 씨는 출입금지구역으로 들어갔다가 북한인민군의 총에 맞아 사망했고 남한은 이후 모든 관광일정을 중단했다. 2010년 북한 정부는 남한이 소유한 5개 부동산의 재산권을 박탈하면서 그 동안 입은 손실에 대한 배상이라고 주장했고 북한의 관광회사에게 이 지역을 양도했다. 최근 북한은 금강산에서 여행을 전담할 미국계 회사와의 양해각서에 서명하기도 했다. <공산주의 관광>은 남한과 북한의 상황이 좀 더 희망적이었던 시간을 보여준다.

Tourism in Communism was filmed in 2005, the same year Hyundai Asan announced that the one million South Korean had visited Geumgangsan, a North Korean tourist area considered sacred by many on both sides of the border. The South Korean company, Hyundai Asan, developed resorts there with permission from the North Korean government, and in 1998 began to lead tours to the only part of North Korea that South Korea’s general public could visit. A gaudily decorated horse-drawn carriage with an enthusiastic, even exuberant, driver makes for a pleasant and amusing trip.

However, the night landscape and propagandistic slogans posted along the way foreshadow actual events that were yet to come. In 2008, a 53-year-old woman tourist, Park Wang-Ja, was shot and killed by the North Korean military when she strayed into off-limit territory, and South Korea suspended all future tours. In 2010, the North Korean government seized five properties owned by South Korea, claiming it was compensation for lost revenue, and opened the area up to North Korean tour companies. Recently North Korea signed a memorandum of understanding with an American company to lead tours there as well. This film reflects a more hopeful time.

클라라 리덴(1979)은 가벼움과 진지함, 유머와 공포, 공공과 개인 등의 교차점을 탐험하는 대가로 알려져 있다. 그녀는 서로 다른 예술 형식 사이의 경계를 경쾌하게 넘나들며 이 교차점을 보여주는데 사진이나 영화, 개념예술과 퍼포먼스가 생각보다 배타적이지 않음을 증명해 보인다. 그 과정에서 단순히 물리적인 공간뿐 아니라 오늘날 현대인들이 지닌 동요나 뿌리 없음이라는 강요된 결과 또한 탐구한다. 리덴의 작품은 제53회 베니스 비엔날레 덴마크 파빌리온과 노르딕 파빌리온에서 전시되었으며, 제54회 베니스 비엔날레에서 심사위원 특별상을 수상하기도 했다.

<진보의 신화>, 2008

Klara Lidén, Sweden Klara Lidén, born in 1979, is a master at exploring intersections, lightness and gravitas, humour and fear, public and private – in both senses of the latter word. Her work reflects this by flitting back and forth across the boundaries between art forms; demonstrating that photography, film, conceptual art and performance are not as exclusive as they would seem. In doing so, she explores not just physical spaces but the enforced effect of restlessness and rootlessness on the modern individual. Lidén has exhibited her work and performed extensively worldwide since 2003.

Her work was presented as part of an exhibition in the Danish and Nordic Pavilions at the 53rd International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale (2009) and she received a special mention from the jury of the 54th Venice Biennale.

모습이 그려진다. 팝 문화의 함의 때문에 그가 문워킹으로 걷는 모습이 막연하게 우스꽝스러워 보이지만, 그 배경을 살펴보면 전혀 그렇지 않다. 원래 그만큼 음험한 곳은 아니었다 해도 영상에서는 그곳이 꽤 위험한 곳이라는 힌트가 담겨 있다. 이러한 방법이 사용된 것은 단지 작가가 이런 종류의 방법을 선호하기 때문이기도 하거니와 전달하려는 메시지, 결정적으로는 그들이 마주한 상대에서 비롯된 것이기도 하다. 저항은 아마도 상대방뿐만 아니라 독단적 신념이나 혁명에 대해 회의적인 관객에 기인하는 것이기도 하기 때문이다. 이는 사회 문제에 대한 의식을 가진 예술가들에게 문을 향해 돌진하거나 해변에서 트로이 목마를 만드는 일 중 하나를 선택하게 하는 일과도 같다. 사유를 촉발하고 유쾌하지만 어딘가 불편하게 만드는 클라라 리덴의 작품 성향을 잘 보여주는 <진보의 신화>는 후자의 좋은 예라고 할 수 있다.

The balance and contrast between levity and gravity continues in Lidén’s video installation Der Mythos des Fortschritts (The Myth of Progress) (Moonwalk). Lidén is shown moonwalking through the streets of Manhattan at night-time. While the movement is vaguely ludicrous, given its pop culture connotations, the setting is not. It may not quite be an inherently sinister location, but there is the hint of menace. The method employed depends not only on the artist’s preference, but also on the message they are conveying and, crucially, the opposition they are facing.

This resistance may come not just from their -> opponents, but also from an audience sceptical of dogma or claims of rebellion. For the socially conscious artist it is a choice between storming the gates and constructing a Trojan horse on the shore. The thought-provoking, playful but disruptive work of Klara Lidén, as evidenced in The Myth of Progress, is a fine example of the latter.

시프리앙 가이야르(1980)는 자연에서의 인간의 자취(흔적)에 대해 문제를 제기한다. 조각, 페인팅, 에칭, 사진, 비디오, 퍼포먼스와 공공장소에서의 대규모 개입으로 그는 일약 국제미술계에서 떠오르는 신진작가로 주목 받았다. 전형적인 풍경화가를 위촉해 럭셔리한 자연 환경에 둘러싸인 스위스 전원 주택에 화려한 색채의 그림을 그리게 하거나(<스위스의 폐허들>(2005)), 고층 아파트를 17세기 네덜란드의 풍경 동판화 스타일로 그려내는 <불신의 시대에서의 신뢰>(2005)에서 보여주듯, 가이야르는 자연에 의해 점령당하기 직전의 모던한 폐허로 동시대의 건축물을 보여준다. 마치 18세기 프랑스의 폐허주의Ruiniste 화가 후버트 로버트가 루브르를 상상의 박물관으로 그렸을 때 그랬던 것처럼, 가이야르는 “어떤 흥미로운 대상을 만들기 위해서는 누군가 궁전을 파괴해야만 한다’고 한 프랑스 사상가 디드로의 생각을 따라 작업한다.

<데스니안스키 레이온>은 러시아의 상트페테르부르크에 있는 허름한 주택가의 한 주차장에서 벌어진 일을 담고 있다. 이곳에서 빨간색 셔츠를 입은 그룹과 파란색 셔츠를 입은 그룹의 여러 남자들이 서로를 향해 천천히 걸어가는 장면이 펼쳐진다. 프랑스 출신 작곡가 쿠드람Koudlam의 <나는 너의 모든 것을 보고 있다I See you All>의 몽환적인 전자 비트에 맞춰, 색깔로 구별되는 그룹의 사람들이 대형을 잃어가며 서로 향하는 모습은 마치 고대 군인들이 격돌하기 직전의 모습을 떠올리게 한다. 그러다 갑자기 신호탄이 공중에 아치를 그리며 화염을 내뿜고, 두 그룹은 얽히고설켜 주먹질을 하며 달려들고, 삭막한 주택단지를 배경으로 거친 몸싸움을 보여준다. 쿠드람의 맥박이 고동치는 듯한 사운드가 긴박해짐에 따라 분노에 찬 육박전이 격렬해지는 한편, 여기저기 인도 위에 지친 사람들이 널브러져 있다. 오래지 않아 파란색 그룹은 보행자용 다리 근처에서 그룹을 다시 짜기 위해 성급히 후퇴한다. 곧 빨간색 셔츠 그룹과 파란색 셔츠 그룹이 다시 모여드는데 이번에는 놀랄 정도로 좁은 인도에서 격돌한다. 파란색 셔츠 그룹은 또다시 물러나고 빨간색 셔츠를 입은 이들은 승리감을 만끽한다.

Cyprien Gaillard, France Combining minimal composition, a romantic visual sensibility, and an anarchic spirit, Cyprien Gaillard’s work displays a personal vision or reading of landscapes and cities, juxtaposing pictorial beauty and the atmospherically lush with elements of sudden violence, destruction, and idiosyncrasy culled from popular culture, pointing to the precarious nature of public space, social ritual, and the very viability of the notion of civilization. He invests his sites of interest with new traits through his interventions, resulting in architectural travelogues dense with layers of suggestive symbols, as well as an incisive examination of the foundations and inventions of civilizations, both ancient and modern, revealing their simultaneously seductive and alienating features, disrupting our usual way of looking at nature and architecture and raising social and political questions. He shows contemporary architecture as a modern ruin on the verge of being taken over by nature. Just like 18th century French ruiniste painter Hubert Robert did when he painted the Louvre as an imaginary ruin, Gaillard follows French philosopher Denis Diderot’s advice according to which One must ruin a palace to make it an object of interest. Cyprien Gaillard was born in 1980, in Paris and lives and works in Berlin and New York.

He has been the subject of solo exhibitions at a number of major institutions, including: MoMA PS1, New York; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin; Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, Milan, Italy; Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and Kunsthalle Basel, Basel, Switzerland. He was awarded the Marcel Duchamp Prize in 2010.

Desniansky Raion, 2007 The video takes place in a parking lot of a drab housing complex in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he witnesses two large groups of men—one mostly wearing red shirts and the other blue— slowly walking towards each other. Set by Gaillard to the hypnotic electronic beats of French composer Koudlam’s I See you All, the video shows the colour-coordinated groups marching in loose formation, reminiscent of ancient armies confronting each other on some distant battlefield. Suddenly, signal flares billowing smoke arc through the air and the two groups come together, clashing in a flurry of fists—a breath-taking display of raw physical violence set against the stark backdrop of the housing block. As the sounds of Koudlam’s pulsing music draw louder and more urgent, the furious hand-to-hand combat intensifies while bodies of the fallen lay strewn on the pavement. Before long, the blue faction beats a hasty retreat, only to regroup moment’s later on one side of a nearby pedestrian bridge. The two sides come together again, this time clashing on the impossibly narrow span of the footbridge. The blue group is once more chased off, and the victors in red erupt in victorious celebration.

Minerva Cuevas , Mexico Mexican artist Minerva Cuevas’s extraordinarily prolific and international artistic practice is grounded in conceptually and socially engaged actions. Her site-specific interventions take place in a range of settings from the Internet to museums to the cultural commons. She creates political and social interventions, produces compelling videos and photographic work, co-opts various means of distribution to get out her message, irreverently and cleverly tampers with corporate and government identities, and makes bold political-creative work that disrupts political and visual economies. In 1998, she founded Mejor Vida Corp. (Better Life Corporation), an enterprise that provides free products and services such as international student ID cards, subway passes, lottery tickets and barcode stickers which reduce the price of food at supermarket chains. Cuevas also creates posters, billboards, and performances; with these actions Cuevas has assumed the role of both a political and artistic actor. Presently she is developing a series of works on the oil industry in Mexico and also on Social Ecology studies, re-adapting early scientific and optical devices such as magic lanterns and microscopes.

For several years to now Minerva Cuevas has been mapping opposition in Mexico City, by recording both its more evident and its inconspicuous signs as part of a video archive. From this unique footage she developed Disidencia v. 2.0.

A stream of strong and poetic images takes us on a trip around permanent and transient scenarios of resistance in Mexico City's metropolitan area. Through places and time and along with a wealth of demonstrations and direct political references we are granted access to the subtle and many times invisible or clandestine ways of how resistance can manifest. One of the highlights of this portrait of the city’s rebellious character are the rural elements that remind us of the city’s origins and that constitute a form of resistance by themselves, managing to defeat the urban definition of a city.

Disidencia v 2.0 resembles a personal cartography where Cuevas puts in the map an ethic of resistance. Disidencia’s visual archive is accompanied by two musical compositions

Tehching Hsieh, Taiwan Tehching Hsieh, born in 1950, dropped out of high school in 1967 and took up painting. After finishing his army service (1970-1973), Hsieh had his first solo show at the gallery of the American News Bureau in Taiwan. Shortly after this show, he stopped painting. In 1973, Hsieh made a performance action, Jump Piece, in which he broke both of his ankles. He was trained as a sailor, which he then used as a means to enter the United States. In July of 1974, Hsieh arrived at the port of a small town by the Delaware River near Philadelphia. He was an illegal immigrant for fourteen years, until he was granted amnesty in the US in 1988. Starting from the late 1970s, Hsieh made five One Year Performances and a Thirteen-year Plan, inside and outside his studio in New York City. Using long durations of time as context for the work, making art and life simultaneous, Hsieh achieved one of the most radical approaches in contemporary art. The first four One Year Performances made Hsieh a regular name in the art scene in New York; the last two pieces, in which he intentionally retreated from the art world, set a tone of sustained invisibility.

One Year Performance, 1980-1981 For many Hsieh is a cult figure. The rigor and dedication of his art inspires passion, while the elusive and epic nature of his performances generates speculation and mythology. For twelve months, since April 11, 1980, Tehching Hsieh hasn’t been able to sleep for a whole night without interruptions.

To be precise, he hasn’t even been able to sleep for two hours running. Every 60 minutes the sound signal produced by his watch connected to a loudspeaker woke him up, and reminded him of the task he had self-imposed—that of clocking in at every single hour, 24 times a day, throughout a whole year. Be it day or night, at every hour Hsieh, wearing a worker’s uniform, went to a grey-walled room in his loft in Manhattan and stamped a time card in a sign-in machine.

A few seconds later, a 16 mm camera captured a picture of his tense face next to the machine. A witness signed all the 366 time cards at the first day of the performance, in order to assure that they couldn’t be replaced. Moreover, at the end of the twelve months the witness confirmed that the 16 mm film was not falsified. Projected as a motion picture, it condenses a whole year into about six minutes. The artist’s hair, which is shaved at the beginning of the film, reaches his shoulders at the end of it. In order to complete the film, Hsieh had to undergo extreme psychophysical stress and to reorganize his own life meticulously around the passing of the hours: for instance, he could not move away from his loft for longer than 60 minutes.

<진짜 문화부>는 홍콩작가 케이시 웡의 작품으로 중국 본토에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 돈과 폭력에 찌든 부패한 공무원을 그린 영화이다. 작가는 종이 합판으로 핑크 탱크를 만들고는 이 탱크를 타고 홍콩 시내를 돌아다녔다. 그리고 작가가 만들어낸 핑크 정당에 대한 공격으로부터 당을 지키고 공무원들과 조용히 지내기 위해서 실제 정치인들과 지역정당에 가짜 돈을 뿌렸다. 2012년 7월 1일 종이 합판으로 만들어진 핑크 병력 수송차(APC)를 타고 홍콩 시민 400,000명과 함께 홍콩 거리 퍼레이드를 했다. 그러나 중국 본토 북쪽으로 얼마 가지 못해 멈추었고 작가는 중국의 악명 높은 교도소 중 한 곳에 수감되는 처벌을 받았다.

Kacey Wong, Hong Kong Kacey Wong, born in 1970, makes experimental art projects that investigate the space between men and their living environment with a social intention. He thinks being an artist is similar to being a detective, the case on hand is to investigate the self. He was the winner of 2012 HK Contemporary Arts Award given by HK Art Museum and Best Artist Award in 2010. He is the founding member of Art Citizens and Street Design Union, which examines the artist and designer’s role in social political causes, also a former member of Para/Site Art Space. His mobile tricycle project Wandering Homes was featured at the 2008 Venice Architectural Biennale in Italy. His floating house Paddling Home was performed in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour and his mobile bulk bed Sleepwalker was the star feature during the 2010 and 2012’s Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture exhibition.

The Real Culture Bureau, 2012 The Real Culture Bureau, filmed in Hong Kong by local artist Kacey Wong, portrays a corrupted government official, which for the artist embodies money and violence often seen in Mainland China. The artist built a pink tank out of cardboard, rode it through downtown Hong Kong, and threw fake money to real politicians and other real local political parties to prevent them from putting up resistance against his imaginary Pink Party and demanded harmonious silence from them. During the July 1st, 2012 demonstration this pink armored personnel carrier (APC) which is made by cardboard paraded the streets of Hong Kong together with 400,000 Hong Kong citizens. This performance, just executed a few kilometers north in Mainland China would have him earned at least a jail sentence in one of their notorious prisons, currently temporary houses for many artists and other free spirits.

그룹 취토 델라트?(무엇을 할 것인가?)는 2003년 상트페테르부르크, 모스크바, 니즈니노브고로드 등에서 활동하는 예술가, 작가, 비평가, 철학자 그룹으로 상트페테르부르크를 기반으로 만들어졌다. 이들은 정치학과 예술, 그리고 액티비즘의 결합을 목표로 삼았는데 그룹이 만들어진 2003년 5월, ‘페테르부르크의 재건’이라 불리는 활동으로 존재를 드러낸 직후 당시 핵심 그룹이 ‘취토 델라트?Chto Delat?’라는 국제신문을 발간했다. 취토 델라트?라는 이름은 19세기 러시아를 대표하는 급진적 사상가 니콜라이 체르니셰프스키Nikolai Chernyshevsky의 소설 <무엇을 할 것인가?>(1863)에서 가져왔다. 취토 델라트?는 오늘날 문화적 활동을 위한 자율성을 재정의함으로써 스스로 지식 생산의 정치화를 목적으로 하는 다양한 문화적 활동을 위한 자기-조직적 플랫폼으로 규정한다.

Chto Delat?, Russia The collective Chto Delat? (What is to be done?) was founded in early 2003 in Petersburg St. a workgroup of artists, critics, philosophers, and writers from St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Nizhny Novgorod with the goal of merging political theory, art, and activism. The group was constituted in May 2003 in St. Petersburg in an action called The Refoundation of Petersburg. Shortly afterwards, the original, as yet nameless core group began publishing an international newspaper called Chto Delat?. The name of the group derives from a novel by the Russian 19th century writer Nikolai Chernyshevsky, and immediately brings to mind the first socialist worker’s self-organizations in Russia, which Lenin actualized in his own publication, What is to be done?

(1902). Chto Delat sees itself as a self-organized platform for a variety of cultural activities intent on politicizing knowledge production through redefinitions of an engaged autonomy for cultural practice today.

Angry Sandwich People or In Praise of Dialectics, 2006 This slideshow and audio piece emerged from an inner group discussion on how it might be possible to make an artistic statement in memory of the centennial anniversary of the first Russian revolution of 1905. In 2004, the collective carried an extensive artistic study of the contemporary urban environment of a working class neighbourhood Petersburg St. As the center of the worker’s uprising in 1905, this neighbourhood later also became the site for one of the most ambitious and comprehensive constructivist projects in building a new, socialist Leningrad. A year later, they decided to return to this neighbourhood to carry out an action and to shoot a video that might be capable of expressing our relationship to the history of this place.

Andre Hemer, New Zealand Andre Hemer is a New Zealand artist, born in 1981, who works between a variety of media- interplaying digital interfaces and artefacts, painting, and sitespecific installation. Working within an ever-evolving field of investigation, Hemer is constantly inventive in his exploration of how the ancient art of painting speaks to and engages with the current moment. Through his paintings, Hemer considers the digital as the condition sine qua non to understand his generation and the society he evolves in. Rather, it draws our attention to construction of contemporary visual imagery and offers a new kind of representation – one that explores painting moving freely between states of digital representation and painted object.

Currently undertaking his PhD at the University of Sydney, Hemer was recently shortlisted for the forthcoming Thames & Hudson publication 100 Painters of Tomorrow. Since completing his Master of Fine Arts in 2006, Hemer has worked full time as an artist, winning numerous residencies and awards and exhibiting throughout New Zealand and in Australia, Korea, Taiwan, Germany and the UK.

Live at the Museum is a new series of films by New Zealand artist Andre Hemer. In it, buskers and other artists perform without permission in front of major museums around the world. The democracy of art and the use of public space are key components of this work. It is an indefinitely ongoing series and while each work stands on its own, they are interconnected through a shared distance to global cultural agendas and a quiet beauty emanating from the covert act of street performance. Live at the Museum is an investigation into the collective and institutional affirmation given to culture, while also functioning as a digital archive to cache the contribution of its participants.

Matt McCormick, USA Matt McCormick is a filmmaker and artist whose work crosses mediums and defies genre distinctions to fashion witty, abstract observations of contemporary culture and the urban landscape. He has had three films screen at the Sundance Film Festival and has had work screened or exhibited at MoMA, The Serpentine Gallery, The Oslo Museum of Modern Art, the Reykjavik Art Museum, The Viennale, SXSW, The Seattle Art Museum, and in 2007 he was selected to participate in both the Moscow Biennial and Art Basel Miami Beach. The video is an experimental documentary directed by Matt McCormick and narrated by Miranda July, taking place in Portland, Oregon. It is no coincidence that funding for antigraffiti campaigns often outweighs funding for the arts.

Graffiti removal has subverted the common obstacles repressing artistic desires of city workers, and become one of the more intriguing and important art movements of our time. Emerging from the human psyche and showing characteristics of abstract expressionism, minimalism and Russian constructivism, graffiti removal has secured its place in the history of modern art while being created by artists who are unconscious of their artistic achievements.

He Yunchang , China He Yunchang is a performance artist who specialises in undergoing extreme physical duress or injury; he later offers photographs, videos and paintings of the event for sale.

Several of his works have been bloody processes in which incisions of specific lengths were made in various parts of his body. His works are highly symbolic and referential and combine existentialism in contemporary China with traditional mythology and ancient philosophy – but the artist most often gets questioned about his continuing willingness to expend his body for the sake of his performances. He Yunchang: As a human being I feel one should have a lot of pride, like a tree in the primitive forest. He should be able to grow freely. Maybe, the wind will take away some branches and leaves, (but) it is normal. I can not take too many restrictions. In doing performance art (like cutting the river with a knife and casting myself in cement) I wanted to overcome many things in the secular world and break its restrictions. (…) And I feel in such attempts you can bring into play the fundamental and inherent attributes of life; namely what you can do an earth as a human being, and to what extent.

Nirvana Flesh, 2013 In this works, the body is the material and subject. Working on the interaction between human beings’ sturdy will and the fragility that could appear at any time in their existence.

During all of his performances he puts himself in a dangerous relation with environment both natural and cultural. He Yunchang defines his owns limits, physic and mental to transcend them and showcase the human mind strength.

In April 2013, A Chang presented with Bozar and the Feizi gallery in Brussels the performance Nirvana Flesh, within which for 24h he put the clothes he was wearing on fire, until he remained literally naked.

북부 캘리포니아에서 태어나 캘리포니아와 뉴욕에서 성장한 필 아메리카는 어린 시절 그래피티와 불법 사이니지에 대한 열정을 키웠다. 대학 졸업 후 심리학 석사와 부전공으로 철학을 공부한 아메리카는 주류 예술계에서 사진과 글쓰기 등에 전념했지만, 그래피티에 대한 열정을 여전히 지니고 있다. 벨기에의 알리아스 출판사에서 발간된 그의 첫 번째 책 <아워 사이드 오브 더 트랙스 Our Side of the Tracks>에 이어, 전 세계적으로 이루어지고 있는 기차 그래피티 문화를 다룬 책 <얼티미트 그래프스포르쯔 2 Ultimate Graffsportz 2>에 참여했다. 3년간 코펜하겐, 밀라노, 취리히에서 작업했고 지금은 태국에 소재한 디어 버마 스쿨Dear Burma school에서 사진을 가르치는 자원봉사 활동을 하며 아시아에서 벌어지는 여러 프로젝트에 참여하고 있다.

<화이트 앰비션>, 2013

<화이트 앰비션>은 2013년 세계 최고의 관광 도시 방콕에서 촬영된 싱글 채널 비디오 퍼포먼스 프로젝트와 함께 보이는 조각설치 작품이다. 이 작품은 고전적 아름다움에 대한 집착과 하얀 피부에 대한 갈망 사이의 긴장감에 대해 이야기하고 있다. 문화적 정체성, 성 그리고 미덕은 종종 백색과 연관된다. 이미 1963년, 어빙 고프만Erving Goffman은 <스티그마Stigma>에서 하얀 얼굴과 하얀 피부가 하나의 행위 형식이라고 주장했다. 백인은 공동체 안에서 아름다움과 개인의 미덕을 대변하고 재현한다는 것이다. 작가는 이 프로젝트를 통해 인종주의적이고 역사적인 배경에서 분명히 드러나는 사회적, 문화적 차별 이슈를 조명하고 이 같은 계급주의가 어떻게 생물학적으로가 아닌 사회적으로 전개되었는지를 보여준다.

Phil America, USA Phil America, born in 1983, is a Northern California and NYC raised artist and writer. America has worked and lived throughout the US, Europe, Asia and Africa, where he developed his acute attention to a narrative form. He concentrates on individual moments of freedom through various forms and outlets, most recently focusing on the human relationship with both class and race. America’s work focuses on the points of intersection between performance, photography, writing, video and sculptural installation. His style of documentation enables him to understand and capture the true nature of his subjects. Throughout all of his works he combines different media with writing to bring about an interpersonal relationship between the viewer and himself.

White Ambition, 2013 White Ambition is a sculptural installation shown together with a single channel video performance project filmed in 2013 in the heart of the world’s most visited city, Bangkok.

The video explores the tension between the obsessions of classic beauty idea and the desire for a whiter skin. Cultural identity, gender, and virtue are often coined with whiteness.

In 1967, Erving Goffman claimed in Stigmata that a white face and skin are a form of performance. They present and represent the beauty and virtue of an individual within the community. The project takes on the obvious social and cultural distinctions’ issues, in terms of racial and historical backgrounds, and how classism is developed socially and not biologically.

<아이언 맨>, 2009

Wang Qingsong , China Wang Qingsong, born in 1966, specializes in digitally enhanced photographs and oil paintings that address universal social conflicts. He is widely considered as the reigning master of photographic mise-en-scene and high quality printing in China today. Trained as a painter at the Sichuan Academy of Fine Art, Wang Qingsong turned to photography in the late 1990s in order to convey a distinctive and often acerbic vision of Chinese society during the country’s current economic boom. Working in the manner of a film director, he stages elaborate scenes, involving up to two thousands models, on enormous stages. His large-scale colour photographs combine references to classic Chinese art with ironic nods to China’s new material wealth and rapidly growing consumer culture.

찬양하고 있다. 우리는 어린 시절부터 이런 위대한 영웅들을 모범으로 삼으며 어떻게 살아야 하는지, 왜 우리가 각자의 정치적인 계급에 따라 살아야 하는지 배웠다. 하지만 현실은 충돌과 전쟁, 갈등, 논란과 다툼으로 질식할 지경이다. 사람들은 이 모든 어려운 상황들을 직면해야만 한다. 영웅이 된다는 것은 엄청난 고통을 용감하게 감내하며 옳다고 믿는 것을 이끌어갈 고집과 예기치 못한 재앙에 맞서 싸울 기술을 가지고 있음을 의미한다. <아이언 맨>에서 왕칭송은 자신의 이미지를 '아이언 맨'의 영웅처럼 만들었다. ‘아이언 맨’이라는 단어는 1960년대 초기 중국 석유 산업 개발에 인생을 바친 석유 노동자 영웅을 의미한다. (왕칭송은 8년 넘게 유전 지대에서 근무했다) 영상에서 심지가 굳어 보이는 이 영웅은 주먹으로 맞는데도 불구하고, 마치 <Taking Death As Merely going Back Home>에서 그러하듯 다시 일어나서는 자세를 바로 잡는다. 태극권을 하듯 주먹을 피하지만 결국 다시 주먹질을 당하며 머리카락이 뽑히고, 이빨까지 부러지면서도 그는 여전히 상대방을 향해 웃는다. 이것이 삶의 진실일까? 아니면 모든 형태의 폭력에 대한 부조리주의자들의 풍자인가? 그것도 아니라면 ‘아이언 맨’이란 무엇일까?

A poster from the Cultural Revolution entitled To Live Like Such A Person refers to the appreciation of being a brave, honest, and heroic person. In our childhood, we have been taught how to live and why to live in political classes. These heroes were taught, as great models, to emulate and to live up to as we grew up. However, the real world is very tough, stifled with conflict, war, violence, strife, controversy, fight.

People have to face up to all these severe situations. To be a hero means a lot of suffering, bravery, insistence, all sorts of skills of stamina to combat against the unexpected disasters. In Iron Man, Wang Qingsong created a hero in his own image affectionately referred to as Iron Man. This term Iron Man refers to an oil worker hero (Qingsong worked in the oil-fields for over eight years) who dedicated his life to developing Chinese oil industry in the early 1960s. In this video this strong-minded hero has been beaten up by a lot of fists but always straightens up his head facing sideways.

He avoids being punched by playing Chinese Tai Chi (a Chinese body-exercise system of slow meditative physical exercise designed for relaxation, balance and health). Finally, though losing hair and teeth in the course of the beating, he still smiles at his opponents. Is it a fact of life or an absurdist satire against all forms of violence? Or what is Iron Man?

<음식해방군>, 2011

야니 레이노넨의 <음식해방군>에는 헬싱키의 맥도날드 가게 앞에 서 있는 로날드 맥도날드의 마네킹을 옮기는 인부로 분장한 네 명의 남자들이 등장한다. 이들은 인질로 삼은 맥도날드 마네킹의 몸값을 요구하면서, 맥도날드 사측에 음식 재료들에 대한 그들의 윤리적 입장을 묻는 질문을 유튜브로 내보냈다. 맥도날드 측은 대변인을 통해 테러리스트와의 협상 거부 의사를 밝혔고 그 결과 로날드를 단두대에서 처형하는 장면이 영상에 담겼다. 이 영상은 유튜브에서 백만 건 이상의 조회수를 기록했고 폭스 뉴스Fox News, CBS, 프랑스 24France 24를 포함한 다양한 매체에서 국제적 이슈를 만들었다.

Jani Leinonen , Finland Jani Leinonen, born in 1978, plays with the systems of symbols and celebrity, and attacks the marketing strategies through with they operate. Leinonen attacks symbols and marketing strategies, turning them into objects of ridicule, creating clichés about our agreed marketing society and economical everyday. With these strikes, Leinonen unfolds the chain reaction we all are voluntarily involved in and plays up the iconographies of the global brand land. Leinonen’s installations are shops, bars, slot machines but also plain painting exhibitions. What is displayed, though, are not goods but an artistic allegorization that appropriates these marketing strategies only in order to unhinge their underlying assumptions about value and appropriateness. Leinonen graduated from Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki in 2002.

His works have been exhibited widely internationally, i.e. at the Nordic Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennial, Galerie Gmurzynska, Wilhelm Hack Museum Ludwigshafen and Frankfurter Kunstverein.

Food Liberation Army, 2011 In Jani Leinonen’s Food Liberation Army, four men disguised as repairmen removed a Ronald McDonald statue from a Helsinki restaurant. Later on, McDonald’s received a ransom demand, broadcasted on YouTube, asking them to answer several questions about the sourcing of their food and their ethical stance. McDonald’s refusal to negotiate with terrorists (McDonald’s spokesperson) resulted in Ronald’s execution by guillotine. The video has received more than a million hits on YouTube and made international news, with the story being covered on Fox News, Bill O´Reilly, CBS, France24, Channel 4 and the Washington Post, among many others.

Manit Sriwanichpoom , Thailand Manit Sriwanichpoom, born in 1961, has been for years a leading figure in Bangkok’s lively contemporary art scene.

Whether satirizing the foibles of Thai nationalism, or rattling the skeletons of the country’s bloody political past, Manit’s work is always insightful and provocative. Best known for his acerbic photographic critiques of Thai consumerism, Manit’s trademark Pink Man series has been exhibited the world over. But his most recent projects mark a return to formal concerns and opens up new questions about the future of a country divided and wracked by political and symbolic crisis. His work has been exhibited worldwide including in the Venice Biennale, Photo Espana, Biennial de Sao Paulo, Paris Photo, International Photography Biennale (Mexico), Gwangju Biennale (Korea), and at the Hayward Gallery (UK).

Pink Man, 1997 – ongoing

마니트 스리와니치품의 <핑크맨> 시리즈는 태국 경제붕괴가 일어났던 1997년에 시작되었다. 전통적으로 핑크맨은 영원히 만족하지 못하는 자기 중심적인 소비자의 상징, 즉 자본주의의 상징이다. 퍼포먼스로 시작된 핑크맨과 그의 텅 빈 수퍼마켓 카트는 현대 태국을 배경으로 어디에나 넘쳐나는 소비를 상징한다. 명확하게 드러나는 오락적인 요소를 넘어 카트는 실제 진보에 대해, 그리고 새로운 아시아 개발도상국의 소비주의에 대해 질문한다.

The Pink Man series began in 1997. Traditionally, a pink man is a symbol of the eternally unsatisfied and self-centered consumer, a symbol of capitalism. Started as a performance, the pink man and his empty pink supermarket cart are a symbol of ubiquitous consumption against the backdrop of contemporary Thailand. Beyond the obvious entertainment, the cart carries actually questions about progress and what consumerism means in newly developed Asian countries.

The Pink Man, portrayed in several series, sets in the backdrop of street markets doubled with historical photos of social struggle provide a more poignant and accurate of the society. Pink Man is wandering quietly and non-expressive face, like a robot. Also the apparent pastiche of classical European painting betrays an exoticism form the East toward the West. In this very dense transcultural portrait, Manit Sriwanichpoom also pointed out the inherent contradiction of the Buddhist principle of material detachment to the hyper-materialism installed by progress.

리다 압둘(1973)은 구소련의 침공으로 어쩔 수 없이 아프가니스탄 카불을 떠나 독일과 인도에서 난민으로 살았다. 그녀는 작업에서 서양의 형식주의가 가지고 있는 비유들을 아프가니스탄의 문화와 예술에 영향을 준 이슬람교, 불교, 힌두교, 이교도와 유목민들의 다양한 미적 전통과 융합시킨다. 또한 비디오, 필름, 사진, 설치와 퍼포먼스를 포함한 다양한 매체를 사용해 작업한다. 가장 최근 작품은 2005년 베니스 비엔날레, 네덜란드 아른헴 현대미술관, 비엔나 쿤스트할레 등의 전시에서 소개되었으며 멕시코, 스페인, 독일, 우즈베키스탄 및 아프가니스탄의 여러 페스티벌에 참여하기도 했다. 지난 몇 년간 압둘은 아프가니스탄의 여러 지역에서 건축물과 정체성 사이의 관계를 탐구하는 다양한 프로젝트들을 진행해오고 있다.

<수송 중에>, 2008

압둘의 비디오 작품 <수송 중에>에서는 어린 학생들이 솜으로 채운 군용 비행기를 밧줄로 묶고 마치 연처럼 날리려 하고 있다. 압둘은 “이 작품은 수년 동안 방치된 낡은 러시아 비행기를 가지고 노는 어린아이들과 함께한 매우 즐거운 작업이다. 영상에 등장하는 비행기는 마치 비행기와 새의 중간쯤 되는 것처럼 보였는데, 이 점이 나를 완전히 매혹시켰다. 비행기는 거의 뼈대만 남은 것처럼 보였다… 전쟁으로 모든 것이 파괴된 가혹한 현실은 아이들, 즉 가장 순수한 창조물이라 할 수 있는 아이들이 보여주는 미래에 대한 희망과 대조를 이룬다”고 말한다. 그녀는 ‘아이들이 직면하고 있는 폭력적인 상황 안에서 드러나는 비극적 방식의 아름다움’을 이끌어내고자 했다. 보리스 시륄니크Boris Cyrulnik의 치유력resilience의 영향을 받은 압둘은 아이들의 천진난만함이 자기들이 처한 비극적인 상황을 이겨내기 위한 해결책을 만들어냄으로써 어려운 상황을 유연하게 대체할 수 있게 함을 보여주고자 했다. 카불 거리에 뛰어 노는 아이들이 없다면, 오늘날의 아프가니스탄은 지금보다 훨씬 더 폭력적인 상황이었을 것이다.

Lida Abdul , Afghanistan Lida Abdul was born in 1973, in Kabul, Afghanistan, where she resides now. Abdul lived in Germany and India as a refugee after she was forced to leave Afghanistan after the former-Soviet invasion. Her work fuses the tropes of Western formalism with the numerous aesthetic traditions–Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, pagan and nomadic–that collectively influenced Afghan art and culture. She has produced work in many media including videos, films, photographs, installations and lives performance. Her most recent work has been featured at the Venice Biennale 2005, Istanbul Modern, Kunsthalle Vienna, Museum of Modern Art Arnhem, Netherlands and Miami Central. She has also exhibited in festivals in Mexico, Spain, Germany, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan; she was also a featured artist at the Central Asian Biennial 2004. For the past few years, Abdul has been working in different parts of Afghanistan on projects exploring the relationship between architecture and identity.

In Transit, 2008 Abdul’s video work In Transit features school children filling a military airplane with cotton, attaching ropes, and attempting to fly the airplane like a kite. In Abdul’s words: It’s really a playful piece, a fantasy piece, with a group of kids who are playing with a very old Russian plane, that was left over years ago. I was really struck by this piece because it looks between a plane and a bird. It’s like a skeleton almost… The harsh reality of the destruction of war is counterpointed by the hope in the future represented by the children – the most innocent creatures. I want to bring out the beauty of the tragic way in which children face violent scenarios and show how they can be flexible in similar conditions with their innocence, by creating an antidote to the tragedy of their condition.

Without children playing and running through the streets of Kabul, Afghanistan today would be even more violent than it is.

<시대의 표지판>, 2013

<시대의 표지판>은 뉴욕에서 활동하는 안드레 세라노가 진행한 프로젝트이다. 10월 초 뉴욕의 거리에 전례 없이 많은 노숙자들이 구걸하고 있는 것을 본 작가는 몇몇 노숙자들이 들고 있는 표지판을 모으는 프로젝트를 시작했다. 그는 노숙자들이 구걸할 때 사용하는 표지판을 사기에 앞서 거의 매일 도시를 돌아다니며 노숙자들에게 접근해 그들의 이야기를 들을 수 있는 방법을 고민했다. 그가 ‘컬렉션’이라 부르는 소장품은 다양한 연령층의 노숙자들로부터 구입한 약 200여 장의 표지판들이다. 아이러니하게도 사람들은 노숙자 문제에 그다지 관심을 갖지 않는다고 세라노는 말한다. <시대의 표지판>은 이 같은 사회적 불평등과 비극에 대한 반응이며, 길거리에서 음식과 쉴 곳을 찾아 배회하는 노숙자 남녀의 이야기이자 우리가 살고 있는 이 시대의 초상이라 할 수 있다.

Andres Serrano , USA Born in 1950, in New York in a family of South American immigrants, Andres Serrano grew up in an environment marked by Catholic devotion. His first works were inspired by many religious iconographies. The use of faces and bodily fluids are an essential part of his work. A strong aesthetic approach always characterize his work, photographs by Andres Serrano – as with some of his contemporaries such as Cindy Sherman and Robert Mapplethorpe – give an iconic status to the photographic image. By putting into perspective a fundamental dichotomy between form and content, Serrano conveys to the viewer a strange feeling of fascination. Serrano’s works constantly test the visual experience of the sublime. In the exhibition’s catalogue The Morgue for Andres Serrano, Daniel Arasse precisely insists on the unveiling taboos specific to Western society conveyed by the works of the American photographer: The provocation in Serrano’s work requires that we look, right in the eyes, what we now tend, increasingly, to waive, not wanting to know, not to think.

Signs of the Times , 2013 In early October 2013, after noticing an unprecedented number of people begging on New York City’s streets, it occurred to Serrano to start a project to collect some of the signs homeless people use to ask for money. Wandering around the city on almost a daily basis, he developed a way to approach the homeless and listen to their story before buying the signs. His collection, as he calls it, is composed of about 200 signs, bought from people of all ages. Ironically, many people do not see a homeless problem, Serrano explains. The video-clip is a reaction to a social injustice and tragedy. While it is a testimony to the homeless men and women who roam the streets in search of food and shelter, it is also a chronicle of the times we live in.

침↑폼은 2005년 도쿄를 기반으로 20대 아티스트들 6명이 결성한 아티스트 콜렉티브 그룹이다. 멤버인 우시로 류타Ushiro Ryuta, 하야시 야수타카Hayashi Yasutaka, 엘리Ellie, 오카다 마사타카Okada Masataka, 이나오카 모토무Inaoka Motomu, 마즈노 토시노리Masuno Toshinori는 모두 시대적 현실에 직관적으로 반응하는 강한 사회적 메시지로 현대 사회에 개입하는 작품을 지속적으로 내놓았다. 비디오가 중심이지만 설치에서 퍼포먼스까지 다양한 매체를 사용해 작업한다. 침↑폼은 도쿄뿐만 아니라 다양한 나라에서 벌어지는 전시와 국제 프로젝트에 참여하고 있으며 최근 미술 잡지나 전시 기획까지 그 활동 영역을 넓히고 있다.

<100번의 키-아이*>, 2011

이 비디오 작품은 침↑폼의 멤버들이 소마Soma에서 만난 친구들과 함께 100번의 기합을 외치는 실제 장면을 촬영한 영상으로 2011년 5월 후쿠시마에서 촬영되었다. 소마는 동일본대지진에 영향을 받은 도시 중 한 곳으로, 많은 사람들이 사랑하는 사람들과 집을 잃었으며, 방사능 유출의 공포에도 불구하고 파괴된 도시에서 두 달이 넘는 시간을 보내야만 했다. 미디어에 집중 보도된 다른 지역들과 달리 이 지역은 자원봉사자의 부족으로 고생했는데, 아마도 이곳이 후쿠시마 다이치 원자력 발전소와 매우 가까웠기 때문인 듯하다. 작품 영상은 스스로 피해자임에도 사람들을 위로하고 재건을 도우려 지역 젊은이들이 현장에 모여 즉흥적으로 함성을 지르는 장면을 원 컷으로 촬영해 편집한 것이다. * KI-AI: 일본인들이 투지를 보여주기 위해 소리치는 것

Chim↑Pom, Japan Tokyo-based artist collective Chim↑Pom formed in 2005 in Tokyo while they were still in their twenties. Members Ushiro Ryuta, Hayashi Yasutaka, Ellie, Okada Masataka, Inaoka Motomu and Mizuno Toshinori respond instinctively to the real of their times, continuously releasing works that intervene in contemporary society with strong social messages. Although video is their primary medium, they work in a range of media, from installation to performance.

While based in Tokyo, they develop their activities globally in exhibitions and projects in various countries. More recently, they have expanded their activities further to include the direction of art magazines, and exhibition curation.

KI-AI 100 (100 Cheers), 2011 This video work was made in Fukushima in May 2011 and shows the members of Chim↑Pom members together with friends they made in Soma city doing 100 sequential yells of 100 KI-AI (100 Cheers), which is Japanese for shouts showing a fighting spirit. As Soma city was one of the affected areas of the Great East Japan earthquake, these people lost loved ones, their houses were washed away, and they spent over two months in the destroyed city despite fear of radiation. Unlike other areas intensively covered by mass media, this area had suffered from a shortage of volunteers probably due to it being so close to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. These were real shouts filmed all in one-cut and ad-libbed, by the young locals who, although being victims themselves, had continued to provide relief and help towards reconstruction.

아델 압데세메드, 알제리

아델 압데세메드(1971)는 1994년 알제리를 떠나 현재 미국과 프랑스를 오가며 활동하는 작가이다. 엡데세메드는 '가정에 평화가 없다면, 또 다른 곳으로 떠나야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 영혼이 죽을 것이다. 가장 중요한 것은 행동하는 것이고, 세상을 변화시키기 위해 무엇인가를 창조하는 것이다’라는 명제를 정치적인 강령처럼 받아들였다. 그는 한 가지 특정한 재료나 기법에 얽매이기 보다 설치, 조각, 영상 그리고 사진을 비롯한 다양한 장르와 재료를 망라해 사용하면서 일상에서 볼 수 있는 사물들을 있는 그대로 표현하거나 때로는 논쟁적인 시각 언어로 창조해낸다. 그의 작품들은 매우 적나라하며 폭력적으로 비쳐지면서 논란을 일으키기도 한다. 그러나 인간의 두려움과 폭력성 그리고 이민 정책, 망명 등을 포함한 사회적, 정치적 현실의 부조리를 고발하고 있기 때문에 세계 곳곳에서 많은 관심을 받으며 전시되고 있다.

<바다>, 2008

아델 압데세메드의 <바다>는 작가가 바다 위에 떠 있는 판자 위에 무릎을 꿇고 앉아 거친 파도와 맞닥뜨리며 ‘정치적으로 올바른 Politically Correct’라는 문장을 반복적으로 쓰는 장면을 기록한 비디오 작품이다. 압데세메드는 이 작품을 통해 작가의 역할과 생존의 문제에 대해 이야기하고 있다.

Adel Abdessemed , Algeria Adel Abdessemed, born in 1971, left Algeria in 1994, and considers this action as a political one: When there is no peace at home, one must go elsewhere, and otherwise the soul will die. The most important thing is to act, to resist, and to create in order to change the world. Abdessemed’s work draws from a multiplicity of media, including sculptural installation, video, animation and photography.

While some critics consider his controversial pieces inappropriate due to their often graphically violent nature, the acts, as Abdessemed calls his politically committed artworks, consistently interact with larger global realities.

Abdessemed’s apparent rage permeates throughout, calling viewers’ attention to expressions of brutality and frequently referencing failed immigration policies, exile, and displacement. His work has been widely exhibited.

The sea , 2008 The sea, by Adel Abdessemed, is a video in which the artist faces the ocean on a rough slab of wood. A work that speaks about the role of the artist and questions of survival, The sea documents Abdessemed’s efforts to balance on his hands and knees on the wooden slab as it pitches with the ocean waves while he attempts to write the phrase Politically Correct.

시징맨, 중국, 한국, 일본

시징맨은 오자와 츠요시Tsuyoshi Ozawa(일본), 첸 샤오시옹Chen Shaoxiong(중국), 그리고 김홍석(한국)이 2006년 결성한 프로젝트 기반의 국제 협업 그룹이다. 북경과 남경, 동경은 있지만 서경(시징)은 지구상 어디에도 존재하지 않는다는 데 착안한 세 작가는 ‘서경’이라는 가상도시를 만들고 스스로를 서경인(시징맨)으로 부른다. 서경의 문화, 역사, 사회, 정치, 경제 등에 관한 총 5개의 프로젝트를 통해 가상도시 서경의 모습이 점진적으로 드러난다.

<웰컴 투 시징-시징 올림픽>, 2008

베이징 올림픽이 개최되었던 2008년 8월, 시징맨은 세 번째 프로젝트 <웰컴 투 시징–시징 올림픽>을 선보였다. <웰컴 투 시징–시징 올림픽>은 뻔뻔스러운 중국의 올림픽 마니아들에 대한 유머러스하면서도 도발적인 입장을 취하고 있다. 이 예술가 그룹은 스스로를 ‘운동선수’, 가족과 친구들은 ‘관객’으로 캐스팅해 베이징 외곽에 그들만의 올림픽을 만들어 중국 정부와 국민이 요란스레 베이징 올림픽을 치르던 진지함과 엄숙함을 조소한다. 올림픽 게임 자체가 국제 외교 차원에서 중국의 자존심을 보여주는 최고 퍼포먼스라고 할 때, <웰컴 투 시징–시징 올림픽>은 잘 짜여진 대본과 공식적인 게임이 지닌 의례적 분위기에 유머와 장난 그리고 목적 없음이라는 요소를 투사해 베이징 올림픽을 대하는 중국의 공식적인 태도를 풍자한다. 이로써 <웰컴 투 시징–시징 올림픽>은 ‘대중’과 ‘민중’이라는 관점에 의해 규정된 전통적인 방식으로 그룹을 만드는 것이 아니라 개인들 간의 친밀함에 조응하는 새로운 인간적 척도에서 벌어지는 실천 형식을 보여준다.

Xijing Men , China, Japan, South Korea The Xijing Men, the internationally renowned, projectbased collaborative team of Tsuyoshi Ozawa (Japan), Chen Shaoxiong (China) and Gimhongsok (Korea). The Xijing Men hail, conceptually, from the fictitious city of Xijing, an imaged political entity in East Asia. The term Xijing is the Chinese reading of Chinese characters meaning western capital (the city’s name would be read as saikyō in Japanese and suhkyung in Korean). The word play has roots in the names of real cities: Beijing (northern capital), Nanjing (southern capital) and Tokyo, known in Chinese as Donjing (eastern capital). Since 2006, the Xijing Men have used humour, satire, sarcasm and absurdity to create elaborate performances, drawings, photographs and objects that explore the imagined history, politics, economics and culture of this fictitious place.

Welcome to Xijing – Xijing Olympics, 2008 Staged in August 2008 during the official Beijing Olympic Games, the Welcome to Xijing – Xijing Olympics presented a humorous yet provocative take on the unabashedly spectacular China’s Olympics mania. In the outskirts of Beijing, the artist group carried out their own version, casting themselves as athletes and their family and friends as audience. Drawing from everyday objects and experiences, their version mocked the seriousness and solemnity with which the Chinese government and the Chinese public treated the glitzy theatrics of the real Beijing Games. If the Games themselves constituted the supreme performance of Chinese national pride under the auspices of international diplomacy, then the Xijing Olympics represented a caricature of these attitudes in which humour, playfulness, and aimlessness are injected into the highly scripted and ceremonial tone of the official games. The low-tech theatrics of the Xijing Olympics reflected a form of practice that is refreshingly human-scaled and attuned to the proximity of individuals rather than traditional groupings conditioned by notions of the masses and the people.

클레멘스 폰 베데마이어(1974)는 독일 라이프치히 시각예술대학에서 아스트리드 클라인과 함께 회화를 전공했다. 클레멘스 폰 베데마이어는 주관적 응시, 역사적 사실과 스토리텔링 사이의 관계, 그리고 관객과 무대 혹은 스크린 사이에서 거리를 만들어 환영을 가능케 하는 영화적 개념을 연구했다. 베데마이어는 일곱 번째 예술이 야기하는 매혹에 대해 신중한 태도를 취하는데, 이는 안토니오니Antonioni 또는 안드레이 타르코프스키Andrei Tarkovsky 같은 영화의 고전을 언급하는 데서 드러난다. 그의 영화적 설치는 다큐멘터리와 픽션의 수사를 수행하기 위해 다양한 언어와 테크닉을 사용한다. 비디오, 텔레비전, 영화의 스타일을 적절히 섞으며 작가는 비평과 강력한 신비화의 도구로서의 영화 사이에 필요한 거리를 생성하고자 모색한다.

Clemens von Wedemeyer, Germany Born in 1974, Göttingen, Germany, Wedemeyer studied fine arts at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig, with Astrid Klein.

Clemens von Wedemeyer investigates cinematic notions like the subjective gaze, the relation between historical truth and storytelling, and the invisible presence of the fourth wall that distances the audience from events on stage or on-screen to make the illusion possible (Catalogue documenta 13).

Clemens von Wedemeyer is wary of the fascination that the seventh art engenders. Referencing classics of cinema such as Antonioni or Tarkovsky, his cinematic installations employ a diverse range of languages and techniques to play on the tropes of documentary and fiction. In combining the styles of video, television, and cinema, the artist seeks to create the necessary distance between criticism and the camera as a powerful tool of mystification.

마야 슈바이처 , 독일 Maya Schweizer, Germany

정체성, 전기, 정치, 역사 그리고 기억은 마야 슈바이처의 사진, 비디오와 설치작업의 되풀이되는 주제이며, 개개인의 생각이나 행동, 감정과 인식에 필연적으로 영향을 미치는 도시의 풍경이 그녀의 주요 관심사이다. 마야 슈바이처가 탐구하는 도시 풍경은 때때로 기념비와 같은 트라우마로 가득 찬 시간의 구조로서 간주되며 이는 공공 장소, 빌딩, 건축을 포괄한다.

<메트로폴리스, 중국으로부터의 레포트>, 2004-2006

상하이와 베이징으로의 여행을 기록하고 있는 이 필름 에세이는 2004년 프리츠 랑Fritz Lang의 영화 <메트로폴리스Metropolis>를 리메이크하기 위한 자료를 모을 목적으로 만들어졌다. 공사장 인부들은 도시 건설 현장에서 자신들의 경험을 이야기하고 건축가들은 중국 도시들의 미래에 대한 질문을 받는다. 영화는 계속 메트로폴리스의 참고 자료를 보여주며 유토피아적 도시에서의 화폐와 중국인들이 처한 사회 현실에 대해 질문한다.

Identity, biography, politics, history and memory are recurring themes in Maya Schweizer’s photographs and videos and installations. The urban scenery attracts her interest, which inevitably impact on one´s individual thinking, movements, emotions and perceptions. She is exploring urban sceneries: public spaces, buildings, architecture seen as structures of time which sometimes are loaded with trauma – like memorials.

Metropolis – Report from China, 2004-2006 The film essay, made in collaboration with Maya Schweizer, documents a journey to Shanghai and Beijing, which was made in 2004 with the aim to gather research material for a remake of Fritz Lang‘s cinema classic Metropolis.

Construction workers talk about their experience on urban building sites; architects are asked about the future of Chinese cities. The film continues to show references to Metropolis and questions the currency of urban utopias and their social reality.
