“Climate change”is no longer a novel topic but a problematic issue that we are all familiar with. The fact that we may face a global catastrophe that will affect the lives of people worldwide in the near future has become a commonplace subject matter. Thus, we need to be cautious of not taking this serious issue too lightly. As we become more and more accustomed to hearing about “climate change, we no longer realize the great affect it has to deeply alter our every day lives in considerable ways. Climate change has a direct impact on our lives and will threaten not only our lives but also the lives of future generations. It will destroy communities and social systems, as well as culture and tradition. As instigators of climate change, we must be responsible to find the appropriate solutions. We are hopeful that with a shared will and effort we will be able to successfully address this issue.
In this vein, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Arts Council Korea(ARKO), jointly with the “Global Issues and Cultures” project organized by the Korean government, are co-hosting a combined cultural event titled <Resonance Green Korea: Climate Change in the Bosom of Culture>. This event links the global issue of climate change with culture, introducing a new perspective on climate change. We hope that this event will raise awareness and offer fresh insights as well as provide ways in which we can share a common understanding. Using culture, we want to raise global awareness on “climate change” and ask the citizens to participate actively in finding appropriate solutions.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade successfully organized an international photo exhibition with the theme of “poverty” in 2008, which was the first step of the “Global Issues and Cultures” project. In order to increase the effectiveness of this event, we joined together with the Arts Council Korea this year. The international program will be held in Denmark, and is selected as an official cultural program of the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15), which will be held in Copenhagen in December of this year.
This year’s event will present a good opportunity for us to let the world know of our efforts under the “green growth” policy of the Korean government.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Arts Council Korea collaborated with many individuals and organizations both in Korea and overseas, thus contributing to establish a new and useful model for global partnerships in the future. We thank the Denmark government (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Tourism, Fredericksberg Townhall), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Arirang TV, the Total Museum, Samsung Electronics, S-Oil, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, the Ministry of Environment, and the Korea Foundation. I would also like to thank many people in the arts and culture field who united their efforts for this cause.
Thank you.

On the occasion of the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (COP15), the Arts Council Korea (ARKO) and the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade organized a Korean cultural event called Resonance Green Korea: Climate Change in the Bosom of Korea. This event, which will be held at the Total Museum in Seoul, and Frederiksberg City Hall in Copenhagen, is expected to draw much attention from the conference participants and the world through its appointment as an official cultural event for COP 15. We, the Arts Council Korea, are very grateful to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for inviting us to co-host this meaningful event.
From ancient times, Korean artists sang songs, recited poems and painted illustrations on the subject of nature. It is said that traditional Korean food, clothing, architecture and even movements resemble certain aspects of nature. Thus, by introducing nature imbued in Korean arts, we wish to take a moment to discuss the profound influence of nature on the arts and our lives, and also instill a greater will to protect our precious lives from the effects of climate change. With this in mind, beautiful traditional Korean performances are presented alongside a contemporary art exhibition and environmental photographs to deliver our interpretation of climate change.

We hope this point of view contributes to a new global perspective on the climate crisis. Moreover, we, as artists, are very pleased to contribute our efforts in fighting against the shared global issue of climate change through this event.
This event owes much not only to the ARKO and the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which initiated this event, but also to many other supporters. We would like to say a few words of thanks to the Total Museum in Seoul and Frederiksberg town hall in Copenhagen for giving us the venue, Samsung for contributing LCD monitor equipment support, and Arirang TV for producing a documentary film. The Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ministry of Environment, UNEP, S-oil, and the Korea Foundation also contributed their efforts for the success of the event. Most of all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the artists who spared no effort to make this event happen.
I hope for the successful opening of this event and conference.
